The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor Merry Christmas from all at Alnwick Town football club. I hope that Santa was good to you. I asked him for one thing involving the football club this year. Hopefully he’ll be able to deliver that clean sheet sooner rather than later! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Some of the 472 made the short trip to Hebburn last weekend, and in a game of few chances it was the home side that in the end ran out comfortable winners. We didn’t create enough in the game to deserve anything to be honest. We lacked a spark on the pitch, a bit of experience. All in all it was just a bit quiet. Hopefully the injury to Jon Colley isn’t as bad as first feared. Luckily Skippy was there to help him off the pitch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------One winner in last weekend’s scorecast picked up a whopping £200 just in time for Christmas. Not a sum to be sniffed at! It’ll be back to £50 again for next weekend. Every player gets a sheet, 1st team and reserves. Have a go at the predictions, it’s only 50p a go and you’re helping the club in the process. Or even better, grab a sheet and try to get it filled in if you can. Workmates, family, friends, the dog, anyone! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This is our 3rd meeting of the season with Heaton Stannington, and so far it is a win a piece. We were comfortable winners in the Senior Cup, but they were comfortable in the league. We don’t have the best of records in games straight after Christmas. The turkeys must lie on the stomach for longer up here. The last time we won a Northern League games after Christmas was against Willington (Saturday 27/12/2003). Hopefully we can break that little hoodoo today. www.facebook.com/ alnwicktownafc Twitter: @alnwicktownafc

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents HEATON STANNINGTON Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely good value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.
Tom McKie

Today’s Opponents - Heaton Stannington Although officially founded in 1910, recent research has discovered that Heaton Stannington were in existence by the 1903-04 season when they finished fifth in division 2 of the Newcastle and District Amateur League. In December 1904 they resigned from the league and there is no further record of the team until 1910 which suggests that they might have folded. The club name originates from its links with the Stannington Avenue area of Heaton. The next match played by the Stan appears to have been on 24th September 1910 when they were beaten 4-1 by Sandyford. The club played friendly matches until joining the Tyneside Minor League in1913 and Northern Amateur League (NAL) Division Two in 1914. After the First World War, the club spent next 19 years in NAL Division One and gained their first trophies in 1934 and 1936 when they won the Tynemouth Infirmary Minor Cup and NAL Challenge Cup respectively. The first glory season came in 1936-37 when the club won NAL Division One, were Northumberland Amateur Cup winners and NAL Challenge Cup runners up. The reserves were also NAL Division Two runners up. For one season, 1938-39, the Stan participated in the Tyneside League and were runners up. Heaton Stannington were elected to the Northern League in 1939. They only managed one season in the league before it was suspended for the duration of the Second World War. The league restarted in 1945 but the club were elected, until 1946, as a non-playing member as their ground was being used by the military. After 5 consecutive bottom three finishes, the club resigned at the end of the 1951-52 season and joined the Northern Alliance until 1956. The next 16 seasons included involvement in the NAL, North Eastern League and the Northern Combination. In 1972 the club stepped up to the Wearside League and remained there for ten seasons. They were forced to resign from the league in 1982 for financial reasons due to the club trustees, who had formed a limited company in 1968, putting the annual rent up from £400 to £1500. The company then tried to build a supermarket on the ground but the planning application was defeated. In 1983 the High Court ruled that the ground belonged to the football club and the company had to relinquish ownership. The team were not members of a league during 1982-83 but then joined the Tyneside Amateur League (TAL) for one season and achieved only their second league title up to this point. The next 2 seasons were spent back in the NAL where they were champions in 1985-86 as well as wining the Northumberland Minor Cup. For the next 27 years the club were in the Northern Alliance, which became a 3 tier league in 1988 and saw the Stan placed in the Premier Division. After two relegations to Division One, the Stan achieved stability by spending 9 seasons in the Premier Division. The club won their highest level league trophy when they became Champions in 2012. In 2012-13, they achieved the treble by not only retaining the title but by wining the Northern Alliance League Cup and the Northumberland Senior Benevolent Bowl. For season 2013-14, after a gap of 61 years, the Stan returned to the Northern League. They were in the second division promotion race throughout the season and finished a healthy fifth. After some publicised delays, Grounsell Park now boasts new floodlights and a stand to complement the other facilities including a bar serving real ale. Much of the recent success is a result of the commitment and work of manager Derek Thompson and assistant Geoff Walker. The first trophy of 2014-15, the Shunde Worldwide Friendship Association Cup, was won in July when the Stan beat Shunde of China 17-2.
