Latest news, if you haven’t heard already (from the club website): Alnwick Town can confirm that Adam Laidlaw has resigned as 1st team manager. His resignation follows on from Saturday's defeat at Ryhope CW. The club would like to thank Adam for his efforts and time at the club, and wish he well for the future. Adam said on Twitter, "Regrettably I have to announce that I have resigned as manager at Alnwick Town. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the club and wish them all the best for the future. Some absolutely amazing people involved up there. Hope we cross paths soon." Steve Mullen will take charge of 1st team affairs until the end of the season.

Editor’s Column Never a dull season at Alnwick Town!

Coming home from work on Tuesday I had a couple of texts to say that Adam had resigned as manager. A bit of a surprise as I thought he would have saw the season out. It also leaves us in a tricky position with just 9 games to go. Steve Mullen is taking the reigns until the end of the season. He’ll be getting used to being a caretaker manager by now. Steve has until the end of the month to sign players on, so I’m expecting to send away a few forms in the next week or so. Players are needed to bulk up the numbers, as players left with Egen, and players will no doubt also leave with Laidlaw. As for today’s opponents, they had a slow start to the season but have picked up well, the opposite of us basically. Channon North is one to watch, he always seems to score against us so I’m hoping that our defence will be paying him some close attention. Today’s match sponsor is local lad Alyn Brewis, who is also our main programme sponsor.

Club History

Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.

Club History

The club now faces its 5th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. In 2015-16 we look forward to another positive year, with a new management team in place and fresh ideas for the future. Hebburn was very different back in 1912. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men, the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour and the town, 11 years earlier, had welcome a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle. Reyrolle opened an engineering works, initially employing just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures and export to 70 countries and be known worldwide. The company also started a football team, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history who provided the sports ground on which the Northern League side still plays. Football has played a major part in the life of the town, a cornerstone of its history. Probably it also helped the population forget the harshness of day-to-day life, families of ten and more in insanitary, two-up two-down houses. When the last pit closed in 1931, it had claimed the lives of almost 200 men and boys. There’d been plenty of teams before 1912, of course, notably Hebburn Argyle – kicked off in 1882 by Fatherr Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derbies with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000.The Geordie town also had shinty and curling clubs and even an annual Highland Games, organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society. Alphonse Reyrolle had actively encouraged his workers to take part in sport, including “barefoot” football, and formed the Employees’ Benevolent Association. The team formed in 1912, elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League, was suitably booted, however. They progressed, flourished in the 1930s, had a wartime season in the North Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points. The Tyneside club then had 28 seasons in the Wearside League, and won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968.

Opposition Info

In 1988, following the demise of the iconic engineering company A. Reyrolle, the name was changed to Hebburn and application made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved and other clubs canvassed. The break, however, came when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding to play elsewhere. The team which had been fifth in the Wearside League played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, won promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 but were relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. They won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000. In season 2011/12, Hebburn reached the FA Cup final qualifying round – a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places – and secured promotion in third place after a fascinating and exciting final ten games which took the team up to the first division alongside Team Northumbria and Gillford Park (now re-named “Celtic Nation”). In 2012/13 Hebburn Town met their target of staying in the first division after a nerve racking end to the season. During the close season however manager Paul Bennett decided to leave the club for Jarrow Roofing along with his assistant Dean Nicholson, Unfortunately the team followed suit and in June the club had to start from scratch; two ex-Hebburn players Scott Oliver and Davy Bell took up the challenge and the new management team successfully assembled a squad of mainly young players with a base of experienced players to give the team a good mix. Unfortunately, the very young and somewhat inexperienced side could not avoid relegation although they played with spirit, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season. The team received many plaudits for their playing style and attitude and also achieved some notable results; although relegated the team got stronger as the season progressed. Most of the squad, now with first division experience, have stayed with the club and this has been bolstered with more recruits during the close season. 2015/2016 sees the team still in the second division narrowly missing out on promotion in the final run-in to last season’s campaign. Scott Oliver and his assistant Davy Bell are still at the helm with most of last season’s squad still intact and augmented with several new signings.

Match Report Alnwick Town 2-4 Billingham Synthonia Brown T, Macpherson T; Langstaff M (3), Osmond M

Changes were made by the home side, with Dale Kennedy making his first appearance of the season up front alongside Josh Hay, and Jake Lowes also came in at left wing. It was a positive start from both sides, but within with first 10 minutes Alnwick found themselves 2-0 down. The first goal, Alnwick were caught on the break, and left wing Macaulay Langstaff drilled in from the edge of the box to give the visitors the lead in the 6th minute. The home side were caught out again 2 minutes later, with Langstaff again the scorer, tapping home from close range following a break down the right. A nightmare start score wise for the home side. Alnwick didn’t give in though, and got back into the game just 3 minutes later. A great ball by Josh Hay across the box was drilled home by Tony Brown to reduce the deficit. The away side were probably expecting an easier game than what they were getting, and were struggling to cope with Alnwick’s pressing and physical play. Tony Brown almost got his 2nd of the game in the 20th minute. A freekick from 20 yards out was tipped onto the face of the crossbar. The home side weren’t to be denied any longer though. A cross into the box in the 24th minute was headed back across by Ross Straughan, and Tom Macpherson, making his 200th appearance for the club got on the end of it with a diving header. Scores back level, much to the delight of the home crowd. Both sides were playing some brilliant football, and you couldn’t tell which team was top of the form table or bottom. The away side though regained their 2 goal advantage with 2 strikes from distance around the half hour mark. First, Langstaff completed a first half hat-trick, drilling the ball into the top corner, followed by Matthew Osmond, who smashed the ball home from distance giving keeper Brooks no chance. 2-4 at half time, but Alnwick were playing well and unlucky to be behind. The 2nd half lost some of the momentum of the 1st half, producing no further goals. Efforts from Tony Brown went just wide, and the task was made more difficult when Kennedy was shown a straight red for a lunging tackle. Players argued the ball was won, but the referee deemed the player to not be in control of the challenge. Ross Straughan had a shot tipped over in stoppage time to deny a grandstand finish, and the final whistle ended the game at 2-4. A much improved performance from the home side, who have 10 games left to ensure their safety in the Northern League. Next up, Ryhope CW away on Saturday 12th March. Alnwick: Brooks C, Dixon J (Brooks L), Hogg K (Dundas L), Gair R, Macpherson T, Straughan R, Riddell D, Brown T, Kennedy D, Hay J, Lowes J (Schiavetta D) Unused: Jackson J, Willis J
