The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor Last weekend was a dark one in the history of our football club. The defeat to Seaham Red Star (which will be mentioned later) felt insignificant. We lost one of the most influential men that Alnwick Town has ever had. Eric Hately passed away at the age of 70 last Friday night. He was part of Alnwick Town’s glory years in the Alliance, helped to set up junior football at the club in the 1980’s, and also held the position of Club President. An impressive CV from an inspirational man. Eric will be missed by the club, but also by the town as a whole. He was a key figure within the Christmas Lights committee and the Shrove Tuesday football. Hundreds of people that have played football for Alnwick Town Juniors have Eric to thank for getting junior football off the ground in the town. I only hope that we can ensure the junior side of our club grows from strength to strength in the future. It’s the least we can do to ensure that Eric’s memory lives on. RIP Eric - Alnwick’s Number 2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------So after the bad news in the morning, the nightmare continued into the afternoon, with the club suffering their heaviest ever defeat in the Northern League, 9-0 away to league leaders Seaham Red Star. Players need to put it behind them, and quickly. We’ve taken some right hammerings scoreline wise this season, and it’s not been pleasant at times. But we’ve also produced some cracking displays. Confidence is a massive thing in football, and we’ve been a bit low since the disappointment of cup exits back in November. Wear the armbands today with pride, and let’s give Eric a fitting send off. www.facebook.com/ alnwicktownafc Twitter: @alnwicktownafc

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents NORTON & STOCKTON ANCIENTS Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely good value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Defender: Ross Straughan Waited for his chance, and he’s taken it at the centre of defence. Looks set to be part of the back 4 for years to come. Solid. Defender: Gloire Mbiavanga Our pacey French full-back has returned for a 2nd season at the club. Young player of the year last term. Bags of potential. Not much English in him.
Keith and Linda Douglas
Defender: Eric Hately One of the most decorated players to have played for the club. Winner of multiple Northern Alliance league titles and cups. Gone, but never forgotten.
Legend
Defender / Midfielder : Danny Lowes Possibly the longest serving player at the club (on a full time basis now), Danny can do a job anywhere along the back 4 and on the wing. Just got a cracking tattoo. Defender / Midfielder : Kieran Hogg Nippa’s back after a brief spell away at Ashington, which never got going due to injury and management change. Hopefully come back with the same form he left with. Defender / Midfielder / Coach: Bryan Murray The 472 will be in touch with Muzza at some point to get their trophy returned. Retirement? Today’s Opponents - Norton & Stockton Ancients Having started out life in 1959 to provide a winter alternative for local cricketers, Norton Cricket Club Trust FC played its football in the Teesside League, winning the Durham Minor Cup in 1968. In 1980 when Stockton FC was having to close, its remaining assets, including the goalposts, were transferred to Norton Cricket Club Trust. Members of the Stockton board joined the Norton club and it was agreed to incorporate Stockton’s nickname, ‘The Ancients’ into a new club name., and the Norton & Stockton Ancients were born. The club was welcomed into the newly reformed second division of the highly competitive Northern League. It held its own in the League’s second tier without really threatening promotion, until in 2009, following the arrival of new club chairman Mick Mulligan, the club secured first division football. Under the first team management of Conrad Hillerby the Ancients retained and consolidated their first division status and top 10 finishes were secured in two of the three seasons following promotion. In recent years the club has also reached the quarter final of the FA Vase and the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Cup where it lost to FC United of Manchester in front of a record attendance of 1,526 at the club’s Station Road ground. At the end of the 2011/12 season, manager Conrad Hillerby moved on and the club appointed former Middlesbrough and Cardiff City striker Andy Campbell as its new manager.
Eric Hately - From Cyril Cox Following the sudden passing of Eric Hately, I thought that it would be appropriate for club Secretary Cyril Cox to have his say on the man that contributed so much to the club over the years - Programme Editor. Eric Hately - No. 2 “I came in contact with Eric when I came out of the Army in 1967 and started accompanying my father, Ernie Cox, to Alnwick Town’s games. He was on the Committee and my Uncle Norman Cox was the Chairman.” “The team was made up from three areas: Alnwick, Belford and Dunston WMC. Eric was part of a team that would have been equal to any of the so-called big boys in the Northern League Division I now. The curious thing about Eric was that, for a man playing at No. 2, he preferred the wrong foot but that in no way made him any less effective. He played in a superb defence, the regulars being Davy Redpath in goal (from Belford), Eric at No. 2 (Alnwick), Tommy Pickard (Alnwick’s No. 3), with two central defenders in the shape of John Shanley (Dunston) and team Captain Frankie Peareth (also Dunston) who played just in front of Shanley. That was a formidable defence by anyone’s standards. Eric was part of a team that swept all before them, winning about 23 trophies in 10 years against good hard Alliance sides.” “Eric was always up for a game and never late, plus I will always remember him with a smile on his face no matter the game, situation or weather. Not one to sustain too many injuries due to his fitness and timing in tackles, I suspect another reason he did not stay injured was seeing Clive Burn run onto the field with the innards of a football filled with cold water, and a large sponge! Another attribute Eric had was his ability as an attacking full-back.” “From a personal point of view, it was always a pleasure to come into contact with Eric the Club will never forget him. I never came across anybody in football that did not say the same. Eric, you were a good ‘un.” Cyril E J Cox Secretary/Vice Chairman, Development Alnwick Town AFC
