The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor Welcome to St James’ Park for our latest attempt at getting to Wembley! Today we face Pickering Town, which I think is the first ever meeting between the two side. Pickering’s league form this season is Played 11, Won 4, Drew 2, Lost 5. Goals scored: 18. Goals Against: 31. Currently 9th in the table. A similar sort of league form to ours points wise. What do we know about the visitors? Well they were beaten 6-0 by Washington in the F.A Cup qualifying round earlier in the season, a side that we lost against 4-2. At the weekend, they came from 2-1 down to win 3-2 away at a side 5th in the league. It won’t be an easy game, we’re facing a side in the equivalent league above us. We pushed Albion Sports all the way last season. Lets hope that we’re in the hat for the next round at the end of 90 minutes today. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Brilliant win last weekend against Ryhope. Brad McClelland getting his first hat-trick for the club, and the 3rd by an Alnwick player this season. There were some stand our performances on the day. Our two big centre backs hardly put a foot wrong all day and deserve a mention. Hat-trick hero Brad will get the plaudits though and rightly so. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We’re in cup action again on Tuesday night, with Heaton Stannington the visitors to St James’ Park for the Northumberland Senior Cup. We’re due a result against Heaton as they are proving to be a bit of a bogey team for us. They’re also classed as this season’s ‘derby’ fixture as we have them on the bank holidays. Get yourself along on Tuesday night as well. All support is appreciated, and when people are here getting behind the lads it makes a difference. The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents PICKERING TOWN Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely goof value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie

Today’s Opponents - Pickering Town Pickering Town Football Club were first established in 1888, for many years the club competed in the local football leagues. One of the local leagues they competed in was the York Football League which they joined Division Two, in 1953 –54. They were promoted to the league's top division after only one season. In the early 1950s, the York League was heavily contended between York Railway Institute, Market Weighton and Pickering Town. Indeed these were the teams in the top three when Pickering Town first won the York League in 1955–56. The club dropped in form for the rest of the decade in comparison (although they did always finish in the top eight). During the 1959–60 season, they finished as league runners-up to Dringhouses.

Yorkshire and Northern Counties Leagues Pickering eventually joining the Yorkshire Football League Division Three in 1972. They started well in the league, and during their second season were promoted to Division Two as champions. Pickering Town finished as runners-up to Bridlington Town in the 1974–75 season and thus were promoted to the top division of the Yorkshire League. [1] They dropped in form a couple of seasons later, getting relegated in two successive seasons. For the rest of the decade Pickering lingered around the mid parts of the Yorkshire League Division Three. In 1982 they became founding members of the Northern Counties East Football League and were in the NCE Premier Division from 1992. It was around this time that the club first entered the FA Challenge Cup, they knocked out Penrith before losing to North Yorkshire rivals, Northallerton Town in the next round. A few seasons later in 1996–97, they knocked out Pontefract Collieries 2–1 in the competition, but lost to Bishop Auckland in the next round. In terms of the draw, the club has had very bad luck in the competition, as every time they reached the 1st Qualifying Round, they were forced to play away from home. In 1999 Pickering were relegated to the NCE First Division. This was to last only two seasons and promotion back to the Premier Division came in 2001.

Jimmy Reid transformation The club underwent a great transformation with manager Jimmy Reid and his assistant Steve Brown in charge. Reid was a former player with St. Johnstone and York City and Brown a former "Pikes" player and coach at the Leeds United Academy. At the end of 2001–02 season Jimmy Reid left the club and Steve Brown took control. At the start of the 2002–03 season 5 first team regulars were lost for a variety of reasons which left the club struggling for much of the season. The hard work and dedication of Brown, his management team and the players was rewarded towards the end of the season as it all started to come together and with only 4 defeats in the last 15 league games the club finished the season in 13th position.

Today’s Opponents - Pickering Town 2003–04 season was an exciting one for the club as they were in the top half of the league table all season and for much of it, with games in hand, looked possible championship contenders. However with a glut of fixtures, and possibly with the knowledge that promotion to the re-structured Northern Premier League was not an option due to ground grading, at the season’s end the club were not able to capitalise and finished in a creditable 5th position. Early into the season 2004–05 owing to ever increasing business commitments Steve Brown stepped down as Manager to be replaced by ex-Ipswich Town and Newcastle United striker Alex Mathie, veteran of over 200 league ga me s and 20 years as a professional. After much ground improvement work in recent years, including the erection of floodlights, a new 120 seater stand, covered standing accommodation and more recently an additional 100 seater stand behind the "scoreboard end" goal, the club now possess one of the best grounds in the league.

A Blast From The Past - F.A Vase 2001 Alnwick Town 3-4 Squires Gate - Report courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette Enchancing his ever growing reputation striker James Swordy grabbed another two goals to add to his impressive tally for Town. The young strikers double burst, which took his total to three goals in two games, ultimately proved not enough to ensure Town’s continuation in the competition. Despite leading for most of the match Town were hit with a sucker blow as Gate scored twice in the last five minutes to steal the game. Manager Mac Belisle said “I enjoyed the game. Even though it was a young squad we had out the team did well, and young Swordy was tremendous. Players came in and played out of position for us, Mark Cockburn was tremendous in midfield and Neil Catlow continued to play even after picking up two knocks. We lost the game through a lack of subs as we had no-one to put on, a couple of players on the bench to help out would have been great.” Pitched against unknown opposition from the North West Counties division two Town were quick to grab the initiative with an opening goal after five minutes. In front of a sparse crowd Town kicked off with striker Paul Yeadon playing in midfield role lobbing the opener. Forced to clear a through ball hurriedly Gate keeper Ian Carthy raced out of his area, but only played the ball to Yeadon lurking near the half-way line. Sizing up the situation the striker returned the ball whence it had come and over the head of the despairing keeper and into the net. Struggling to muster any sustained pressure in the first half hour Gate saw defender Jason Belisle deflect their only shooting chance for a corner. Swordy looked to have doubled Town s advantage with a crisp half volley finish with 15 minutes played but his celebrations were cut short by the linesmen s offside flag. Showing his speed Swordy was denied another opportunity as the striker was crowded out by three defenders as he looked to take advantage of a half chance. Continuing to be a nuisance the striker managed to trouble Carthy again as despite the attentions of three defenders he still got his shot away. Called into action keeper Wayne Belisle at full stretch clawed away a John Moss cross to preserve Town s lead. The keeper was helpless after half an hour as a Paul Paynter volley beat him, but not his brother Jason who hacked the ball off the line. Gate finally broke through the Town resistance as a deep cross was volleyed home by the stretching Lee Catlow. Looking to move into the lead Gate pushed forward but the Town defence held firm, with only Catlow s long range raking shot forcing Belisle into action. Launching the perfect counter blow Town snatched the lead on the stroke of half-time through Swordy. Running 20 yards after collecting the ball the striker flashed an angled shot across Carthy to restore the host s lead. Full of running in the second half Gate pushed Town back as they gained the upper hand and then their equaliser. Demonstrating the cruelty of football the equaliser when it came was a scrappy affair and an own goal. A powerful shot by Paynter cannoned off Jason Belisle and looped agonisingly over the grounded keeper. Looking to punish all Town s mistakes Gate were unlucky not to move in front for the first time midway through the half as a volley was fired over by Scott Sugden. Firing in shots from anywhere and forcing Town ever more on the defensive Gate seemed well in control of the game. Good interplay released Sugden again but surrounded by defenders the striker was unable to take the ball in his stride, but his eventual shot still beat Belisle to ricochet off the post. The striker smashed the loose ball into the net but the linesmen came to Town s rescue as he flagged the effort out for offside. Completely against the run of play Swordy put Town back into the lead and doubled his own tally for the game. Running clear of the defence he arrowed another angled shot across and beyond Carthy to claw Town back into the match. The youngster almost grabbed another as he jinked past three defenders on a run into the Gate area, but he shot wide. With an equaliser meaning a long midweek trip to Blackpool for the replay, Town were desperate to hang on for the win. In a final twist Gate won the tie with two goals in the last five minutes, both fortuitous and unlucky on Town. The first came as the result of a left sided corner which was headed against the bar, before dropping kindly for Alec Rawson to stab home. The winner also came from a dead ball as a 30 yard free-kick was powered into the Town box by Catlow, and Sugden reacted quickest to lash the loose ball beyond Belisle. This time Town could not find a way through the Gate backline for an equaliser and they bowed out of the competition at their first hurdle.
