It’s nice to be back I suppose. I won’t pretend to have missed you all, sitting with a beer in a t-shirt and shorts outside in 20 degrees at night, coming back to this weather. I missed a 0-0. Unbelievable. Our first since the 26.04.2014, the retirement parade of Muzza and Brooka against Birtley Town. Sadly the Senior Cup dream came to an end at Bedlington, although it sounds like we pushed them a bit closer than the league cup tie. Cheers, Cookie

Gift of the Gaffer’s Gab

Sandwiched in between 2 cup defeats at Bedlington, we are undefeated in 4 league games. What’s especially pleasing has been our battling characteristics and ability to dig out results when lady luck wasn’t smiling our way. Now we face the bigger tests starting with Ryhope who will be pushing for promotion come April. They have Connor Winter up top who is top drawer and to achieve anything today we must nullify him. In our camp Luc has come back and had 2 clean sheets, and Jamie Dixon has slotted into fullback like Gary Neville (????). We play Easington away on Thursday where I went down to sample on Thursday gone and they’ll be another tough one. Only 3 points from 3rd spot but with a long way to go. Enjoy the game. Jon

Club History

Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.

Club History

The club now faces its 5th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. In 2015-16 we look forward to another positive year, with a new management team in place and fresh ideas for the future. The club was founded by the Coal Miners of Ryhope in 1892 but it was not until the 1927–28 season that we won our first Wearside League title. The club enjoyed most of its success in the 1960s, winning the Wearside League on four occasions, the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup twice as well as the Sunderland Shipowners Cup and the League Challenge Cup during the decade. In the 1967–68 season the team reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the only time in the club's history losing 1–0 at home to Workington. The next successful season was in 1977–78 when we finished 3rd in the league, winning the League Cup and the Durham Challenge Cup for the only time in our history. Between 1988 and 1992 the club was known as Vaux Ryhope after a merger with Sporting Club Vaux. In the 2009–10 season we won the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup for the first time in 44 years as well as finishing runners up in the Wearside league which was also our highest position in 44 years. However the 2010–11 season was the most successful in the club's history. We won all four competiti ons: the Wear si de League Titl e, Sunderl and Shipowners Cup, Monkwearmouth Charity Cup and the League Cup. This was only the third time that any club had ever achieved this feat in the history of the Wearside League. Remarkably we repeated the feat again in the 2011–12 season winning all four competitions and gaining promotion to the Northern League for the first time in our history. We ended the season having only been defeated once in the last 70 Wearside League and Cup games. In our first season in the Northern League we finished second in Division Two and earned promotion to the first division. However our ground failed the Northern League Inspection and we were demoted back to the Wearside League after just one season. 2013/2014 we finished second in the Wearside League but we did pass the Northern League’s inspection in March and earned promotion straight back up. In our final game of the season we beat the Wearside League champions Stockton Town 2-0 in the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup Final. The season saw the club have three managerial departures but now Gary Pearson has been appointed as the new manager as we return to the Northern League. In 2014/2015 we finished in the top half of the 2nd division which allowed us entry into the F.A cup for the 1st time in over 40 years..

Previous Encounter

Alnwick Town 3 - 1 Ryhope Colliery Welfare

A first hat-trick for the club from Town’s in-form striker Brad McClelland ensured three points for the home side on Saturday. The St James’s Park side secured their fifth win of the season in Northern League, Division Two, against a side that started the day nine places above them in the table. It continues a topsy-turvy start to the season for the black ’n’ whites, who seem unable to maintain their form to string a number of wins together. They now have two cup games in quick succession until a return to league action at Birtley Town in 10 days’ time.

Saturday’s clash, which saw Ross Gair make his home debut and first start for the club and Jon Colley return after four games out, began in cagey fashion with neither goalkeeper being tested. McClelland broke the deadlock after 15 minutes when he beat Ryhope’s keeper to a long ball over the top. Three minutes later, Tony Brown fired just over with a long-range effort before Alnwick keeper Sean Straker saved well from the Colliers’ striker.

As the interval approached, Town nearly extended their lead as, with the Ryhope defence in tatters, a number of short goalkicks in succession were almost punished as Adam Shanks fired straight at the keeper.

Ten minutes into the second half and excellent play by Alnwick was almost rewarded, but Brown’s effort went inches wide. And two minutes later, Town doubled their league as a free-kick into the Ryhope box caused problems for the keeper, and McClelland was there first to head home.

The visitors had a couple of chances to get back into the game, including a header that hit the post, and finally did so with 15 minutes to go. Good build-up play was finished well by a side-footed effort from Andy Appleby. As the nerves began to jangle, particularly in light of the previous Saturday’s last-minute home defeat to Whickham, Ryhope almost got back on level terms during a goalmouth scramble in the Alnwick box.

But it was left to McClelland to seal his hat-trick – the third Alnwick three-goal haul this season – and the three points after Shanks rounded the keeper and laid the ball back to McClelland. And while McClelland will rightly take the plaudits for his goals, Ross Straughan and Tom Macpherson, who were both fantastic at centre-half, deserve a mention. Alnwick: Straker S, Mbiavanga G, Hogg K, Straughan R, Macpherson T, Gair R, Riddell D, Brown T, Shanks A, McClelland B, Colley J. Subs: Douglas K (on for Colley J), Mullen D, Palmer D, Atwell D, Murray B.
