The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor Welcome to St James’ Park, the home of goals! 46 goals in just 7 home matches so far. That’s an average of 6.5 goals a game! There are only 6 teams in a league that have scored more than us, and 3 of those occupy the 3 promotion spaces. The problem is the goals conceded column. Only 1 team has conceded more goals than us, and that’s 2nd from bottom Esh Winning. If we can just improve the defensive side of our game then we’ll be a side that teams really don’t want to come up against simply because they know we will score against them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Today’s opponents Ryhope are back in the Northern League following their enforced relegation at our expense back in 2012/2013. It was a horrible situation to be involved in, going into the final game of the season needing a win and needing a result to go our way to avoid finishing bottom, and then waiting for the F.A to confirm Ryhope’s relegation. An appeal didn’t help matters much either, and we ended up waiting well into the summer to get a final decision. It’s not a situation I or anyone else at the club wants to be in again. The only way to do that is to keep out of that relegation zone, and avoid the politics side of the game. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Following Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at Jarrow Roofing BCA, we are out of the League Cup. The performance was described by one spectator as ‘tremendous’. Roofing’s twitter feed said that Alnwick “caused the hosts lots of problems with some impressive play”. From a side in the 1st Division, with a budget that we can only dream of, I would say that’s pretty good going. It would be nice to have a cup run at some point. With a bit of luck we’ll get one this season. www.facebook.com/ alnwicktownafc Twitter: @alnwicktownafc

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents RYHOPE COLLIERY WELFARE Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely goof value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie

A Blast From The Past - 08/02/2003 Kennek Ryhope 1-4 Alnwick Town Report courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette PROLIFIC striker James Swordy struck twice as Town grabbed three welcome points to move them towards mid table safety. Swordy, who had already grabbed 15 goals this season, proved a thorn in Ryhope's defence all game. The former Alnmouth striker has now scored an impressive 35 goals in under two seasons for Town. Manager Mac Belisle said: "It was a tremendous performance and the lads were outstanding. Their confidence is high and I am really pleased with them. They went down to Ryhope and adapted well to the conditions and their build up play for the goals was good. It's as I have always said the opposition don't bother me it's whether our lads believe they can win, as when they play at their best there's no-one who can beat them." Belying their low league position Town made a good attacking start to the game and pushed Ryhope onto the back foot. Passing the ball around well Town looked dangerous as they came forward with strikers Swordy and Gavin Keen linking well. Losing the ball in their own half almost cost Ryhope dear as Richard Kirby collected the ball and broke forward, but he shot just wide. Having signalled their intentions Town continued to attack with Swordy's attempted lob sailing over. Looking to capitalise on their good play Town forced a corner but were penalised when jostling in the box led to a Ryhope free-kick. A poor backpass gifted the ball to Swordy who beat a retreating fullback to place the ball beyond keeper Ventress. Coming more into the game Ryhope forced two successive corners but they failed to trouble Town who cleared. The respite for the Ryhope defence was short-lived as Town broke forward again with their midfielders and forwards competing for every ball. A foul on Paul McCormack saw Town arrow a free-kick into the box but it was cleared for a corner. Ryhope did mount sporadic attacks but Town's defence ably supported by keeper Wayne Belisle easily dealt with the threat. As half-time approached Town won another corner aimed hard into the box but it just evaded Keen. Within minutes of the second half starting Keen played the ball through a static defence to Swordy, who doubled Town's lead. Good interplay released Town's McCormack who whipped a cross into the box which the waiting Gary Patterson failed to convert. Scrappy play by Town's defence almost let Ryhope get on the scoresheet but the final shot was saved by Belisle. Making the most of their good luck Town promptly broke with Swordy seeing his shot saved, but the rebound fell to Keen who scored. Looking for a way to claw their way back into the game Ryhope managed to force some shots on Belisle's goal. Running from midfield Ryhope's Dean Arkley picked out Gareth Hill, but the striker was slow to turn and Town's defence blocked his effort. Ryhope did find the net with nine minutes to play when a lofted through ball into the box was touched home by Gareth Lincoln. Any chance of a stunning Ryhope revival were cut short by sub Neil Catlow who latched onto a bad back pass to score Town's fourth. There was still time for Ryhope's David Crosby to warm Belisle's hand with a stinging shot pushed round the post. Patterson had the last chance of the match as he ran onto a pass but the Town midfielder dragged his shot wide. Town: W Belisle, M Snaith, P Yeadon, P Lang, A Metcalf, J Belisle, P McCormack, G Patterson, J Swordy, G Keen, R Kirby. Subs: N Catlow, D Hope, S Athey, D Coxford, P Saunders.
