The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor 4 wins on the bounce. Sounds good doesn’t it?! It’s the first time we’ve won 4 games in a row as a Northern League club since January 2006 (1-0, 4-1, 2-1, 3-0). We may have done it in the Alliance as well, but sadly I don’t have the records to check. We’re waiting for the draw to take place for the next round of the Senior Cup, and the big boys come in at the next round. Newcastle are the tie everyone wants, but Blyth Spartans would be just as good. As for the Vase, as you’ll know by now we got a bye from the 1st round and are the first side through to the 2nd Round! Bet Victor are the only bookies that I can find offering odds for a Vase winner, and I couldn’t even see us listed for a price. Shocking. Back to league action though, I was away on holiday for our 2-1 victory away at Birtley Town. Jonny Colley on the score sheet again, following on from his impressive hat-trick against Heaton Stannington. Personally I’m pleased to see Jonny get in amongst the goals again, and I’m sure they’ll be the first of many for the season. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Various rumours are being banded about on social media regarding coming and goings at the club. The only certainties that I know of are that Luc Glasper has joined us on a short term deal from Bedlington Terriers, to cover for Sean Straker who has work commitments. This deal came about as Daniel Mullen left the club and signed for West Allotment Celtic on a permanent basis. Dan made 52 appearances for the club, with 51 of them being starts. He came in as the replacement for the departing long term keeper Brian Brooks and started all bar 4 games last season. We wish him the best of luck at West Allotment, where he will be competing for the number 1 jersey with another former player of ours, Ryan Beal. www.facebook.com/ alnwicktownafc Twitter: @alnwicktownafc

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents RYTON & CRAWCROOK ALBION Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely goof value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.
Tom McKie

Today’s Opponents - Ryton & Crawcrook Albion Shortly after the start of the 1970 - 71 football season John Oliver, the club’s first Secretary, and Les Robson were approached to see if a club could be formed quickly to take over the fixtures of Prudhoe and West Wylam Co-op who had just resigned from the Northern Combination League. After securing a loan from Ryton Social Club of £12 / 10 shillings John and Les approached local Councillor Leo Murray and obtained permission to play at Stargate. As there were no dressing rooms on that site permission was received to change in Crookhill Labour Rooms (or, when they were not available Crookhill Store Hall was used ). Ryton played their first Northern Combination League game, a 3-3 draw, against works team Parsons Athletic on Saturday 17th October 1970. Dressing rooms were built at the ground in time for the following season with the club using the Runhead pub as their base. The mid 1980’s saw the club transfer to Clara Vale for their home games while raising much needed revenue in the Crawcrook Social Club, the Lambs Arms as well as Ryton Social Club. During this period Ryton won the Prudhoe Hospital Cup twice, the Northern Combination League Cup as well as the Durham County Trophy. Following the amalgamation, in 1988, of the Northern Alliance, the Northern Combination and the Northern Amateur Leagues into three divisions, Ryton were allocated a position in the First Division of the newly structured Northern Football Alliance League, winning that title in 1997, thus securing promotion to the Premier Division where we remained until gaining promotion to the Northern League at the end of the 2004– 05 season. 2005-06 marked our first season in the Northern League finishing a respectable 11 th place in Division 2, followed by a 12th place finish in 2006-07 then a commendable 3rd place in 2007-08 which gained us promotion to Division 1 for the 2008-09 season where we finished a very creditable 10th place. Unfortunately that was where the upward progress ended as the following season we finished 17 th, then came the infamous 2010-11 season which saw us finish rock bottom with just 8pts, receiving a whole host of league & cup drubbings on the way including Shildon beating us 10-0 & 7-0 in the league & losing 8-0 at home to South Shields in the Vase. Coupled with the fact that our facilities are based in Crawcrook, and wishing to involve the local community further, the club sought, and was subsequently granted permission by The Durham Football Association, to change our name to RYTON & CRAWCROOK ALBION F.C. at the commencement of the 2011-12 campaign in which we finished 18th in our first season back in the Second Division. 2012-13 saw a slight improvement in fortunes with a 14 th placed finish. Then our new very young look outfit in 2013-14 under the guidance of manager John Wilson & his team, also then new to the club, faced a tough campaign with survival the target which was famously secured on our last match of the season. With the squad older and wiser & stability achieved, an upward progression is expected with a top half finish the target for 2014-15 Off the field, a lottery grant, achieved in 1998, saw a further move to their current home at Kingsley Park. A highlight being that this facility was officially opened by H.R.H. Prince Andrew. Thanks to a Football Foundation grant a third generation all weather seven a side pitch has now been installed which is not only used by club members but is also open to the local community where it is often used by schools and youth organisations. The Football Club is recognised as having achieved Chartered Status and offers the chance for a child to be coached in football skills from the age of six years of age, through all age groups, up to senior level. The club currently has numerous teams, ranging from under 7 years of age through to the senior side level & this season are sharing Kingsley Park with English Pyramid Level 5 women’s side Tynedale Ladies FC. A Blast From The Past - 2012 ALNWICK Town fell to their second defeat in four days as they lost 2-1 to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion on Tuesday night, writes James Willoughby (Northumberland Gazette). The Northumbrians were undone by two goals in 10 first-half minutes, which ultimately proved decisive. While Jon Colley gave the St James’ Park side a lifeline with a tap-in from close range at the start of the second half, the black ’n’ whites could not find that all-important equaliser. The scoreline was harsh on Alnwick who played well, with some nice passing moves and decent spells of possession. But for all their endeavour, Town struggled to carve out many clear-cut opportunities and a lack of bite in the final third restricted them to half-chances and shots from distance on too many occasions. Alnwick did have their moments though – moments which could have changed the game’s complexion. Had Dan Iredale’s stunning shot hit the net instead of fizzing agonisingly wide, Alnwick would have grabbed a quick-fire leveller having trailed 1-0. Had an Alnwick player managed to make contact with the ball after it was flicked across goal in the game’s closing stages, they would have grabbed that crucial second goal to snatch a draw. No one could have denied them that. But it wasn’t to be. However, despite Alnwick slipping to a second defeat in a row – after a 4-1 loss at Hebburn Town on Saturday – they can take away some positives, not least the way they moved the ball around and controlled the game for large periods. And this against an accomplished and experienced Albion side which has picked up away wins at high-flying Team Northumbria and Esh Winning since the end of December. Alnwick started this re-arranged game well, but for all the possession, they never really tested Albion keeper Kyle Barlow. They also looked solid at the back. But this was undone on 33 minutes when Albion went ahead. For the first time in the match, Alnwick’s back-four was stretched and Daniel Streibelt found himself free on the edge of the area and placed his shot neatly into the corner. Alnwick nearly levelled immediately when Iredale found himself free just inside the Albion box and used the angle to hit a half-volley towards the far corner, but it went just wide with the keeper beaten – desperately unlucky. In what proved to be a devastating 10-minute spell at the end of the first period, the hosts went two-down on the stroke of half-time when Albion capitalised on a loose Alnwick pass. An unmarked Luke Sullivan headed home from a left-flank cross. Soon after the break, Iredale nearly scored, but his effort, created by a Neil Catlow cross, was superbly saved by Barlow. Alnwick did get their goal soon after. The lively Iredale was once again involved, racing to the by-line before passing across goal for Colley to tap-in to an empty net. Tony Brown and Catlow had efforts from distance, to no avail, while Gary Patterson had a low header bravely saved. At the other end, Alnwick keeper Henry Woodcock came to the hosts’ rescue on two occasions – a brave one-on-one stop from John Ludlow before coming out of his area to clear the danger as the same player bore down on goal. Alnwick did find the net for the second time but it was disallowed for a clear shoulder-barge on the keeper. Colley had efforts to level for the hosts – the first from distance after a flowing Alnwick move, while the second was blocked by two Albion defenders for a corner. It was from this set-piece, with just minutes to go, that Alnwick could have levelled. The ball was flicked into the danger area but it eluded everyone as it flew across goal. Just the simplest of touches would have done. That was the closest Alnwick came to finding an equaliser as the game ended soon after. Alnwick: H Woodcock, D Iredale, N Catlow, B Murray, G Patterson, D Hubbard, P Blakey (S Bamborough), T Brown, J Colley, K Hogg (M Cockburn), M Nixon (K Willis). Subs: P Hodge, T McPherson. Match and ball sponsor: Stuart Convery.
