The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor

Welcome to St James’s Park for Non League Day 2014. Today we face Seaham Red Star, who are one of the early season favourites for promotion this season. A points deduction (which almost cost us our place in the Northern League 2 seasons ago) prevented today’s visitors from playing 1st Division football this season. It’s been an up and down start so far for us this season. We stopped the run of defeats with a thrilling win against Billingham Town, but were brought back down to earth with a bump after Tuesday’s 5-1 home defeat to Hebburn Town. The game turned after the red card for Ross Straughan, who had been playing well and didn’t look out of place since being given his chance to start with the first team. From a personal point of view, it looked harsh. It definitely wasn’t a penalty as the foul was outside the box as well. No point in dwelling on it though. Hebburn are still unbeaten and I would be surprised if they weren’t in an around the top 3 come the end of the season. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------You will notice now when you enter the ground that ’The Tea Hut’ is taking shape. It’s something that the club has needed for a while now, and will ease the congestion in the clubhouse for a half time tea / coffee / pie. Best of luck to our Groundsman Ian Hogg who has taken this project on. I’m personally looking forward to getting some bait at half time! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If this is your first time at St James’ Park, the club hopes it won’t be your last! We’re hoping for a bigger crowd today thanks to it being Non League Day. Thanks to the Northumberland Gazette for the article in this week’s paper. I really hope it makes a difference. A lot of unseen work goes on behind the scenes at the club, and it makes it all worthwhile seeing the ground busy on a matchday. Ha’way the Wick! The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents SEAHAM RED STAR Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You will soon be able to enjoy a hot drink and food in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. We hope to have this up and running in the very near future. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie

Today’s Opponents - Seaham Red Star Seaham Red Star are named after the pub in which they were formed. A Sunday morning side in 1973, they are now widely regarded as one of the Northern League’s leading clubs. Much of the credit for the Club’s early development belongs to Ralph Pigg, the initial Secretary, and Larry Phillips, the Club’s first Manager. The pair, supported by a small committee, entered a side in the Houghton and District League and, after a promising first season, made a successful application to join the Northern Alliance League in 1974. After a further five fairly successful seasons, the Club felt sufficiently confident to join the then highly competitive Wearside League in 1979. This confidence was soon justified, the Club winning the Durham Challenge Cup in 1980 and the League and League Cup “double” in 1981-82. In 1983, they were elected to the Northern League Second Division and , after some near misses, eventually gained promotion to the First Division in the 1987-88 season. Bryan Mayhew took over as Chairman of the Club in 1986 and, with able support from former Secretaries, Harry Hobson and John McBeth and a small hardworking committee – in particular Reg Atkinson, Dave Copeland, Jim Ferguson and John Smith – the Club enjoyed First Division status for an unbroken fourteen seasons. Notable successes during this period, included finishing third in 1993-4, winning the League Cup in 1992-3 and, after leading the table for most of the season, finishing second in 1999/2000. Mayhew was also a prime mover in getting the League to join the National Pyramid, calling the Special General Meeting of clubs which eventually led to the historic decision being made. Just two years after finishing runners-up in the First Division, the Club suffered its first ever relegation in its near thirty years history. Even worse was to follow when, as a result of dwindling committee support, officials took the reluctant step of tendering the Club’s resignation from the League. However, following a positive response from a number of local people keen to see the Club continue, a new committee was formed under the chairmanship of John Smith and the resignation was withdrawn. The Club’s re-introduction to Division 2 at the start of 2002/3 got off to an unpromising start but, after bringing in Neil Hixo n as Manager, the Star failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division 1. Unfortunately for the Club, Neil’s achievements resulted in him being snapped up by Durham City shortly after the start of last season, effectively putting our promotion aspirations on hold for at least another year. However, with experienced Northern League manager Peter Mulcaster steadying the ship, the Club finished in a respectable mid-table position. Neil Hixon returned as manager in 2005 and along with Stuart Gooden and former Sunderland & Scotish International George Herd put together a side that won promotion back to the First Division in the 2006/07 season. The following season Hixon & Herd moved to Sunderland RCA and Gooden took over the team which finished in a creditable 8th place in the table. The following season saw yet another change in management with former Darlington player Andy Toman taking over. Another dip in club fortunes saw the side face relegation. The 2010/11 and 2011/12 were two of the worst seasons in the Red Star history with the team involved in relegation battles which could have seen the club relegated to the Wearside League, both battles were successful and the club retained it’s Northern League status. In 2012 the club appointed Mark Collingwood and Simon Johnson, who achieved great success in the Northern Alliance League with Hebburn Reyrolle. They brought the nucleolus of the side from their previous club and have added experience and quality into what may well be a team that could challenge for honours. The last two seasons have seen a big improvement on the playing side with a 10 place finish in 2012/13 and 4th place last season missing out on promotion by 1 point. Previous managers in the Club’s history include Northern League legend Paul Walker, in conjunction with the long serving Chris Copeland; former Hartlepool Manager, Billy Horner; and ex Burnley player, Harry Wilson. Former players going on to join Football League clubs include Nigel Gleghorn (Ipswich and Manchester City), Bobby Davison (Halifax, Derby and Leeds) and Stephen Harper (currently with Newcastle United). Tommy Henderson remains the Club’s leading goalscorer, netting 211 goals in 276 appearances including a record breaking 62 in 1978-9. Honours: Phillips Floodlighting Competition winners 1978-79; Durham Challenge Cup winners 1979-80; Wearside League champions 1981-82; Wearside League Cup winners 1981-2; Northern League 2nd Div runners up 1987-88; Northern League Cup winners 1992-93; Northern League 1st Div runners up 1999-2000, Northern League 2nd Div Runners Up 2006-07.

A Blast From The Past - 2006 Alnwick Town 2 Seaham Red Star 1 Report Courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette TOWN ended a poor run of results after coming from behind to beat Seaham at St James Park on Tuesday night. Neil Catlow's stunner late on gave Alnwick a 2-1 win, lifting them above Kennek Ryhope CA to 16th place in Arngrove Northern League Division Two. The club's victory over the ninth placed visitors means they now have 25 points from 26 games, with games in hand on most of the teams around them. Alnwick's last two games had fallen victim to the weather but before that they had lost five games in a row. The visitors took the lead inside the first ten minutes. Seaham came forward down the left flank, and the ball hit the bar before rebounding to the feet of a Red Star player, who tapped it in. Town levelled just before half-time. In the 44th minute, James Swordy received the ball off Ian Common on the right flank. He went down the wing and crossed into the box where Tom Vickers slotted home. With the game inside the closing ten minutes, Alnwick snatched all three points. Town won a free-kick 35 yards out on the right-hand side. Without a run-up, Catlow hit an unstoppable strike, which flew into the top corner. Manager Mac Belisle said afterwards: "I was well pleased with the whole team performance." He has set his sights on getting to 35 points to ensure Town's place in the league next season. Match sponsor: MKM. Fred Olsen Cruises man-of-the-match: Neil Catlow.
