The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor So it’s been 2 disappointing results off the bounce following a resurgence in form. The Ryton game was always going to be difficult losing 2 centre backs that have been in good form. 1 of them is now back from holiday (Ross), but Tom Mac will be out for a few more weeks apparently with a ligament injury. It’s never easy sticking a new partnership in at the deep end, and unluckily for us we caught a Ryton side in form in front of goal. Stokesley was a different story. With Luc Glasper returning to Bedlington following a short term deal, Brian Brooks being unavailable for the weekend, and Sean Straker away with work commitments, we were left without a recognised goalkeeper. I wasn’t there, but it’s never an ideal situation having to play your leading goal scorer in net. Rumour has it that Shanka did get on the score sheet, shame it was in his own net. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The club results archive is beginning to take shape. The Northern Alliance have pointed me in the right direction for results of our most recent stay in the Alliance. Unfortunately anything before the late mid 90’s will only be found in dribs and drabs. If anyone has full results lists for season they would be greatly appreciated. Just let the club know if you have anything which may be of use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Some of you may have seen a certain photograph on twitter, facebook, and on the back of the Northumberland Gazette. I had to turn off notifications on twitter due to the amount coming through at one point. It’s amazing what the camera can capture, even if it isn’t what it looks like. For those of you that haven’t seen it, I recommend checking twitter at some point, and look out for #cannytackle. Dan Palmer - twitter star for a day. Best of it is, Ryton’s player didn’t even remember a tackle taking place….. www.facebook.com/ alnwicktownafc Twitter: @alnwicktownafc

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents SOUTH SHIELDS Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely good value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie

Defender: Gloire Mbiavanga Our pacey French full-back has returned for a 2nd season at the club. Young player of the year last term. Bags of potential. Not much English in him.

Keith and Linda Douglas

Defender: Daniel Palmer Dan has joined this term from Red Row, and has taken the jump from North Northumberland League to Northern League in his stride. Famous online due to a ‘tackle’.

Today’s Opponents - South Shields History The history of Shields mark 1 is blurred but reports in the local Gazette suggest that the South Shields Association Football team’s first recorded result was a 2-1 win in September 1889 against Gateshead Albion, though mention was made of three games the previous season. South Shields Athletic formed in 1897 to play in the Northern Alliance, but folded in 1902. South Shields Adelaide, nicknamed the Laides, were formed in 1899 by Jack Inskip, and after joining the Northern Alliance, moved to the North Eastern League in 1908 – 09, becoming a limited company, Adelaide had been dropped from the name in 1905 and in 1913 the club unsuccessfully applied to the football league polling no votes. In 1919 they contested the post war Victory Shield alongside Newcastle, Sunderland and others, and joined the extended Football league division two in 1919 – 20 amassing 28 club votes. The first game was a 1-0 defeat at Fulham watched by 20,000 and though big crowds were commonplace, at Shields Horsley Hill Ground success proved elusive. The biggest recorded home crowd was in 1926 – 27 when 24,348 turned out for an FA Cup quarter final with Swansea Town, and the Welsh underdogs from Division Three (South) spoiled the party. Relegation came the following season, and after two Division Three (North) seasons the club folded in 1930 despite finishing seventh, and was taken over in its entirety by Gateshead. That was it until 1936 – 37 when, with financial support from the Shields gazette, the team re – formed in the North Eastern League and enjoyed immediate success in both league and Durham Challenge Cup before war broke out. Gates often exceeded 10,000. The record at Simonside Hall (the clubs home from 1951) is thought to be 18,000 for the 1957 – 58 FA Cup tie with York City, though the figure 21,000 has also been reported. Numerous great FA Cup days included the 4-1 defeat at QPR in 1970, and the 10 goal feat by Chris Marron – claimed to be an FA Cup record – in the 13-0 win over Radcliffe Welfare in 1947. Enforced moves resulted from the folding of the North Eastern League in 1957-58, the Midland League in 1959-60, the northern Counties League in 1961-62, the re-formed North Eastern League in 1963-64 and the North Regional League in 1967-68. The Northern Premier League was next stop, and though the League didn’t fold, the club did, in 1974. Its demise was common knowledge before the event, and even though the club reached the FA Trophy semi-final losing 3-0 on aggregate to a Morecambe side it had beaten 6-0 and 7-1 in the League – only 1117 bothered to watch the home leg. The club in its present form was born that year, a phoenix from the ashes, after a second defection to Gateshead by the towns Northern Premier League club, and the sale of Simonside Hall, given to the club by supporters. The re-formed club under Chairman Martin Ford, was based at the councils Jack Clark Park . After two title winning seasons in the Northern Alliance , and a run to the ¼ finals of the FA Vase, Shields joined the Wearside League. Ultimately it fell to chairman John Rundle and his family to provide a new ground at Filtrona Park , which was re-developed and first used by the club in 1992. The first time a team ran out at Filtrona was an emotional day for every follower of the club, in particular for President Dick Butler who died in September 1996. On 4th February 2006 the chairman announced that the club was to fold, local people were incensed that a club like South Shields was going to the wall, and after a meeting with the chairman they decided to take the club on. Against the odds and the deduction of six league points which were incurred from the previous management team, new manager Mick Taylor and his brother Joe as his assistant together with some new players fought off the threat of relegation and kept South Shields status in the Northern League secure, beating Penrith in the last game of the season in a thrilling 2 – 1 victory. Club President the Rt. Hon David Milliband called into the club to pass on his best wishes. During the 2006 / 2007 season due to work commitments, the manager Mick Taylor and his brother Joe left the club, Gary Steadman was promoted from player coach to manager with Tony Gibson a previous South Shields FC manager coming in as his assistant. Justin Perry a well-respected player with Northern League Management experience stepped into the player/assistant manager post in 2007 – 08. The 2007 - 08 season ended with the club once again gaining promotion to the 1st division of the Northern League with a second place finish in the league. The first season in the top flight ended with the club retaining its top-flight status and now looks to become established in the league. The 2009-10 season ended with a top half finish in the league and victory in the final of the Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup in front of a large vociferous crowd at Dunston. As a result of the victory Shields met Spennymoor Town in the JR Cleator Cup, the curtain raiser to the season; against the odds the Mariners claimed a 1-0 victory in a hard fought encounter at the Brewery Field. At the start of the 2010-11 season the management team were joined by Jon King, a much travelled and experienced Northern League player. Unfortunately in the early part of the 2011 – 12 season manager Gary Steadman and assistant Justin Perry stood down from their roles. The committee acted quickly to appoint Jon King as the new manager; for the 2014-15 Jon has brought in former Mariner Lee Bell to assist him.
