The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor On a weekend where I was watching the Reserves secure a late 3-2 victory, I missed what I had threatened for a number of weeks. Those who have seen the man in action will be familiar with his meandering runs down the wing, through the middle, where ever he wants basically. I’d been saying that one of these days he’ll go on this mazy run and belt the ball in the top corner rather than the corner flag. There was no mazy run, but from what I’ve heard, it was a ‘worldie’ into the top corner with pretty much the last kick of the game to secure a vital point. 51 appearances if took Gloire Mbiavanga, but it happened. Devastated that I wasn’t there to see it happen and join him on the pitch in celebration, but chuffed to bits for him to get his first goal. He’s a popular lad amongst the 472. Hopefully his first of many! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Safety is all but certain. Brandon United can only match our points total now, and at the minute it appears that only 1 side will be relegated, with 1 promoted from the Wearside League. Still plenty points to play for. We finished last season on 39 points, so we are only 2 points off that with 8 to play. With any luck we’ll beat that points total today and climb a bit more up the table before the season ends. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I’ve been doing a bit of a trial run before next season to gauge interest in Match and Ball sponsors for our remaining home games. I’m delighted to say that we have both Match and Ball sponsors for today’s game. Thanks to Hotspur Residential as Match Sponsor, and Bubble Football North East as Ball Sponsor. The plan is for Match Sponsorship to be £50, and Ball Sponsorship £25. All sponsorship is really appreciated by the club, and could really help the club progress next season. www.facebook.com/ alnwicktownafc Twitter: @alnwicktownafc

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents STOKESLEY SPORTS CLUB. Thanks to today’s Match Sponsor - Hotspur Residential. Thanks to today’s Ball Sponsor - Bubble Football North East Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely good value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie

Goalkeeper: Sean Straker Straker is challenging with Luc to be the club’s number 1 for the remainder of the season. Stepped in to the side following the departure of Dan Mullen.

Chris Boyes

Goalkeeper: Luc Glasper Luc has returned to the club on loan for a 2nd time this season from Bedlington Terriers. Confident young lad, looks about 7 foot tall.

Brian Ellis

Goalkeeper / Coach: Brian Brooks Brooka is still here, coaching the keepers and is available in an emergency if required!

Available to Sponsor

Defender: Ross Straughan Waited for his chance, and he’s taken it at the centre of defence. Looks set to be part of the back 4 for years to come. Solid. Defender: Gloire Mbiavanga Our pacey French full-back has returned for a 2nd season at the club. Young player of the year last term. Bags of potential. Not much English in him.

Keith and Linda Douglas

Defender: Tom Macpherson Super Tom is back from his ligament injury, and will be hoping to return to the form he showed before his spell on the sidelines. Defender / Midfielder : Danny Lowes Possibly the longest serving player at the club (on a full time basis now), Danny can do a job anywhere along the back 4 and on the wing. Just got a cracking tattoo. Defender / Midfielder : Kieran Hogg Nippa’s back after a brief spell away at Ashington, which never got going due to injury and management change. Hopefully come back with the same form he left with. Defender / Midfielder / Coach: Bryan Murray The 472 will be in touch with Muzza at some point to get their trophy returned. Retirement? What retirement?!

Today’s Opponents - Stokesley Sports Club Since being established in 1920, Stokesley has had various teams playing in local football leagues. These were the Stokesley & District League, Langbaurgh League and the South Bank & District League. During that time, they played on a number of pitches around the town. The Bypass, Springfield and sharing with the original Cricket Team before being evicted in 1963 when the pitch was sacrificed to make way for the new town by-pass. Moving around again for another 29years ensued before eventually settling back at the Sports Club [the expanded Cricket Club]. In season 1999-2000, Stokesley added a 3rd Saturday team by joining the Wearside League. This period being Stokesley’s most successful as they competed in 12 cup finals and winning 7 of them. In 2004, Stokesley Sports Club and the North Riding Football Association won a lottery grant for £894,000 to build a new clubhouse, develop pitches and improve the main pitch to meet Northern League standards. The prize was winning promotion to the Arngrove Northern League division 2 in 2006 and achieving a five-year plan. In their first season in the Northern League, they achieved a creditable 8 th position, steady progress saw them becoming Champions of Division 2 in season 2009/10 as well being finalists in the North Riding Senior Cup. Stokesley lasted 2 season in the premier division finishing 16 th in their first year and then sadly being relegated after a torrid fight to stay in business. Back in Division 2, this season is their ninth in the Northern League, and after last year’s consolidation is hoped to be one of league improvement.
