Welcome to St James’ Park for our final Saturday home game of the season! It’s been another eventful one, and despite defeat at Team Northumbria last weekend, safety was confirmed following Birtley Town’s defeat. We still have points and pride to play for though, so the season isn’t finished yet. Today we welcome Stokesley Sports Club to St James’ Park, whose relegation has been confirmed following defeat during the week against Billingham Synthonia. With 2 sides looking likely to be promoted, Stokesley may well be set to join the Wearside League next season. We’ve been in their position before, finishing bottom and being relegated back to the Northern Alliance. It’s not nice, so best of luck to them for the future. Hopefully we’ve got a load of kids here today making the most of the kids 4 a quid initiative. They are the future of the club, so we need to get them through the door.
Editor’s Column
As the season comes to an end, I’ve been thinking about a couple of positive things to look back on. South Shields: At present, South Shields have pretty much wiped the floor with most sides that they have faced. Back in August, they created plenty of chances, but just couldn’t break us down, and we are one of only 2 sides to hold them to a draw this season (today’s opponents Stokesley being the other). It showed that we can match the best this league has to offer. Youngsters: It’s been a breakthrough season for a couple of the lads. Callum Brooks, Josh Willis, Lewis Robson. All 17 years old on their debuts I believe. We also had a couple of 16 year olds fill in when Adam was here due to lack of numbers. Callum has between all of them been chucked in at the deep end at times, and he’s got a big future ahead of him. For a lad so young coming into Northern League football, against lads that have been around the block and back again, he can hold his head high and say he didn’t look out of place. Lewis I’ve heard may be going elsewhere next year, but if we had the chance it would be great to keep him here. Return of the Old Guard: Steve, Dekka, Muzza and Brooka. We needed them to come in and give the place a lift, kick a few arses up a height, but more importantly, make the players believe in themselves again. 3 wins on the bounce did that. Who knows what next season will bring, but let’s just enjoy the rest of this one, and make the right choice for next season.

Club History
Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.
Club History
The club now faces its 5th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. In 2015-16 we look forward to another positive year, with a new management team in place and fresh ideas for the future. Stokesley Sports Club FC Since being established in 1920, Stokesley has had various teams playing in local football leagues. These were the Stokesley & District League, Langbaurgh League, South Bank & District League, and the Eskvale and Cleveland League. During that time, they played on a number of pitches around the town. The Bypass, Springfield and sharing with the original Cricket Team before being evicted in 1963 when the pitch was sacrificed to make way for the new town by-pass. Moving around again for another 29years ensued before eventually settling back at the Sports Club [the expanded Cricket Club]. In season 1999-2000, Stokesley added a 3rd Saturday team by joining the Wearside League. This period being Stokesley’s most successful as they competed in 12 cup finals and won 7 of them. In 2004, Stokesley Sports Club and the North Riding Football Association won a lottery grant for £894,000 to build a new clubhouse, develop pitches and improve the main pitch to meet Northern League standards. The prize was winning promotion to the Arngrove Northern League division 2 in 2006 and achieving a five-year plan. In their first season in the Northern League, they achieved a creditable 8th position, steady progress saw them becoming Champions of Division 2 in season 2009/10 as well being finalists in the North Riding Senior Cup. Stokesley lasted 2 season in the premier division finishing 16th in their first year and then sadly being relegated after a torrid fight to stay in business. This season is their tenth in the Northern League, and they continue to consolidate in Division 2 with a target of steady league improvement. Steve Mullen made it two wins out of two on Saturday as Alnwick put six past bottom side Stokesley. The game got off to a very slow start with the wind causing havoc throughout the entire game but taking a while to get used to. Stokesley had the first chance in the 15th. Josh Smith had the first of the two as he was unchallenged and given room to get forward, however when the shot came it was rushed by Smith and sliced well wide. With just under half an hour down Alnwick had their first opportunity and it was the one that opened the scoring. Rob Baker swong a low free kick into the near post. James Jackson flicked the ball home cleverly to put the visitors 1-0 up. 36 minutes down and Alnwick looked to add a second. Hitting Stokesley on a counter attack Jordan Miller flicked the ball onto Lewis Robson. Robson hit the ball after one bounce across goal, but it couldn’t find its way inside the post. On the stroke of halftime skipper Ross Gair whipped a ball in behind the defence for the run of Jackson. The first goalscorer tried to use the bounce of the ball to lob the keeper while under pressure from a centre half but the ball had a bit too much height findings its way just over the top. Alnwick did eventually make the pressure pay with the last kick of the half. Lewis Robson crossed towards Jordan Miller. The striker ducked leaving the ball to run nicely for Darren Riddell. He smashed home first time on the bounce to double Alnwick's advantage and send them in 2-0 at halftime. It was a quick start for Alnwick looking for a third. James Jackson worked hard to steal the ball but when in a position for an end product he decided to cross instead of shoot. The cross had just too much for Miller to get on the end of. Determined for a goal Jordan Miller flicked the ball beyond and outmuscled the centre half but his shot was well saved by the knee of keeper Dan Bowman. With 20 minutes of the second half done Alnwick did grab a third. The Stokesley keeper threw the ball out to Clayton McDonald. The poor throw was then teamed with a heavy touch handing possession to Lewis Robson. He lobbed from range over the out of position keeper adding a goal to his earlier assist, 3-0 with 25 minutes remaining. The fourth was added in spectacular fashion, Robson’s low free kick around the wall was spilled by the goalkeeper. Substitute Jamie Dixon was turned on to the opportunity, bundling the ball over the line just inside the post. 4-0 with 73 minutes on the clock. The fifth was actually spectacular. Tony Brown won the ball on the halfway line before well and truly beating at least four Stokesley defenders. He then slotted calmly under the keeper who had flown out to try and stop the run. The ball found the bottom corner to take the score to 5-0. Miller’s luck was still out as Alnwick went on the look out for number six. Jamie Dixon did brilliantly to keep a heavy ball down the line in play before finding Miller with a pinpoint cross. Miller took a good first touch but completely under hit the shot under pressure from several defender, giving Bowman his easiest job of the day. The rout was complete with the last kick of the second half, Robson once again the provider with Brown running onto his cross. Brown flicked past a defender and hit a left foot shot into the floor and out of the reach of the keeper. Brown’s second made it 6-0 with 91 minutes in the clock and that's how it finished with an almost instant whistle from the ref. Now two on the spin for the new coaching set up at Alnwick and attention will now turn to what will be viewed as another winnable fixture at home to 15th place Brandon United. Match Report Alnwick Town 3-2 Brandon United (Brown 28’, 37’; Jackson 85’- Ellis 73’, Clarkson 74’)
Alnwick won their third game on the spin with a rather nervy affair as the home side threw away a two goal lead but managed to fight back for all three points writes Media Officer Mark Craggs. Breaking the pattern of slow starts, this one saw Brandon litter the opening minutes with chances. Adam Smith crossed for Andrew Clarkson in the first minute as the visitors looked for the earliest of goals but Alnwick’s keeper Callum Brooks was out to c ollect. The next opportunity came from a strange corner decision in Brandon’s favour with a free kick from near the halfway line seeming to clear everyone but the referee saw different awarding Brandon the set play. The corner found Daniel Pearson whose shot was not far away from finding the net. Alnwick’s first near miss came with 10 minutes on the clock. Kieran Hogg curled a left footed free kick from the right goal wards with Darren Riddell jumping highest of the crowd of players. His header was close enough to panic Jack Wilson but not close enough to open the scoring. Brandon were next to go close as skipper James Ellis was played through. However Brooks was off his line quickly to knock the ball clear of danger. Brandon kept the pressure on, a corner was swung into a dangerous area at the front post but Alnwick defender Tom MacPherson was on hand to clear with a commanding diving header. The clearance sent Alnwick on a counter attack. Jamie Dixon played the ball to Tony Brown who carried the ball forward over the halfway line. Brown had options in Dom Schiavetta to his left and Darren Riddell to his right but instead decided to shoot from distance, pulling the shot wide to the keeper's right. But Brown’s next shot found it intended target. The right sided players Ryan Douglas and Lewis Robson linked up well with the former crossing in. The ball was headed down to the edge of the area where Brown waited. He struck the ball on a side footed, half v olley as it floated perfectly into the top corner past Wilson at full stretch to his right. 1-0 to Alnwick with 28 minutes played. This saw a real turn in momentum as Alnwick pressed for a second. Only five minutes later Douglas almost found the head of Schiavetta, with only Wilson, who claimed well under pressure, denying him. A minute later, Tony Brown took a corner from the right, directing it towards the back post for the head of Tom MacPherson. The centre half’s header was blocked from the line by a defender as the keeper was beaten. However the second was added with 37 minutes gone. Another Ryan Douglas cross from a deep position caused problems, despite it not being as sweetly struck as the right back may perhaps had hoped. The dragged cross ended up on the edge of the area where it was met by the arm of a Brandon defender, who was adjudged to have his arm in an unnatural position. This gave Brown a chance to double his tally from the spot, which of course he took. Ryan Wilson lost the mind game, going to his right as Brown slotted left. 2-0 at halftime with Alnwick looking like they were cruising. However, after the second half got underway it became apparent that they weren’t. Eight minutes after the restart Callum Brooks made a great stop to maintain the two goal cushion, Ellis latched onto the ball through leaving Douglas helpless as any tackle would have likely been a foul. However the Alnwick stopper was off his line to close down the angle and block the shot away. Brandon’s next attempt was also matched by Brooks as Clarkson got two goes at pulling one back. The first shot was blocked away by one of the crowd in front of him but he had a better look for his second, drilling the ball hard and low however finding no luck again, Brooks got down to turn it away. The goal everyone saw coming arrived in the 73rd minute, but in controversial fashion. A second penalty for handball was awarded by the referee whoever Douglas looked to be struck on the shoulder by the ball as well as outside the box. A poor decision by the ref saw Alnwick concede their first goal in 253 minutes as skipper Ellis took responsibility and just found a way past Brooks who guessed right. The equaliser followed almost instantly, Brooks was challenged as a corner came in, getting to the ball but not doing anything with it other than to put it on a plate for Clarkson. He had the easiest job to tap into an empty net. 2-2 and it looked as if Alnwick had thrown it away. However, 5 minutes from time Alnwick launched another attack. Douglas played the ball towards Schiavetta who let the ball run for super sub James Jackson. Jackson hit the ball sweetly first time, catching the shot perfectly, curling it pinpoint into the b ottom corner around a helpless Wilson, and in turn putting Alnwick back in front. Brandon had one last go, Anthony Phillipson crossed into the crowded penalty area. Brooks caught the cross but was barged by Ellis. The keeper dropped the ball to the feet of Ellis who tapped in. But celebrations were short lived as the ref awarded Alnwick a free kick for the barge. And that was that as Alnwick saw out the remaining two minutes to claim another three points and to pull closer to league safety. 3-2 the final score. Alnwick- C. Brooks, Douglas, Baker, K.
