The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor The weekend of the 6th September will be remembered at Alnwick Town for years to come. 27 goals in total between 1st team and reserve games. Sadly the 1st team came out 2nd best in one of the most interesting games you’re likely to see at St James’ Park losing out 4-8. ATR however faired rather better. Going a goal down in the opening minute, they responded in the cup tie and replied with 14 goals. If that was on the vidiprinter on the tele they would spell it out for confirmation. Fourteen goals at any level of football is some achievement. Also, for a player to get 9 in a game is very impressive, so hats off to Ryan Taylor for that one. Without checking, I would imagine it will be a record score for the reserves since they were reincarnated a few years ago. I’ll have to check with the Alliance to see when the last time there was a higher scoreline. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The 6th of September was also Non League Day, and I was expecting to see a bigger crowd at St James’ Park compared to what we actually got. No Premier League or Championship games were on, so nobody going to the pub or staying at home to watch a dodgy stream of a game. Where are the people of the town on a Saturday afternoon? I still struggle to see how on a Saturday afternoon we can’t attract even just 1% of the population of the town. With away fans / committee the figure should be 100 every week but we aren’t hitting that number. I don’t think putting the prices up by £1 makes a huge difference. It shouldn’t do anyway. Also, people still have the option of a season ticket to save plenty money over the course of the season. It’s something we as a club must improve. Without people coming through the gate, we lose income, simple as that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Finally, thanks to Steve Mullen for his work at the club over the last couple of years. Steve has had to leave his position as coach at the club for personal reasons. I hope he’ll still come along to the games. The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents TEAM NORTHUMBRIA Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You will soon be able to enjoy a hot drink and food in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. We hope to have this up and running in the very near future. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.
Tom McKie

Last Time We Met Team Northumbria 2-1 Alnwick Town Report Courtesy of Northumberland Gazette
A CONTROVERSIAL second-half goal condemned Alnwick Town to their sixth defeat in a row – but it was a game they did not deserve to lose, writes James Willoughby. A double from Peter Watling secured maximum points for table-topping Team Northumbria. But his clincher, which came in the 65th minute, was dubious to say the least, with Alnwick players certain it was offside. One disgruntled club official described it as a contender for the most offside goal of the season. It was a harsh outcome on what proved to be a frustrating afternoon for Alnwick, who had a penalty shout turned down, an effort saved on the line and created numerous chances against their high-flying opponents. But new boss Paul Yeadon, who was in the managerial seat following the departure of Danny Olson and Rob Marshall last week, would no doubt be pleased with the performance. It was an encouraging display against league-leading Team Northumbria who have added five new players, all from professional club backgrounds, to their ranks as part of their scholarship programme. Alnwick, in contrast, recently lost the services of Dan Iredale and Paul Blakey who were transferred to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion at their own request, and instead brought in nine former club Juniors for the match. Team Northumbria broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when the ball was played through to Watling who shot past keeper Brian Brooks. But Alnwick levelled the contest on the half-hour. Chris Moffet controlled a good through-ball and kept his composure to slot home. Despite the hosts having most of the possession, Alnwick nearly took the lead just before the break when Tony Brown clipped the ball into Jon Colley but his header at the far post was saved on the line. At the other end though, Brooks had to dive at the feet of Watling to keep out Team Northumbria. After the break, Alnwick created a number of early chances – Moffet shooting wide while Keenan went close with a snap-shot outside the box. Things could have got better for Alnwick when Northumbria’s centre-half Robert Story handled in the box, but the referee ignored Alnwick’s protests. To rub salt in the wound, Team Northumbria regained the lead nine minutes later. Against the run of play, Watling scored that dubious goal, to the amazement of the Alnwick players who couldn’t believe the linesman had kept his flag down. Soon after, Gary Patterson made a fine clearance to keep Alnwick in the game. Alnwick pressed for an equaliser, with Kieran Hogg going close, first shooting wide before his cross-comeshot was palmed over by home stopper Andrew Jennison, who then denied Colley from the resulting corner. But Alnwick were unable to find the equaliser they deserved and sunk to their sixth defeat in a row. Alnwick Town (v Team Northumbria): Brooks, Murray, Catlow, Moffet, Patterson, Hills (Dundas), Brown, Cockburn, Keenan (Nixon), Colley, Hogg. Subs: Hodge, Baston.

A Blast From The Past - 2006 Team Northumbria 0 Alnwick Town 2 - Report Courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette ALNWICK travelled to Longbenton to face promoted Team Northumbria last Tuesday evening and came away with all three points, courtesy of goals by Neil Catlow and James Swordy, both scored in the first 45 minutes. Alnwick's first attack after five minutes nearly produced an early lead when a cross in from the right by Joe Moscrop found Tom Vickers on the edge of the 18 yard box, his lay-off to Carl Sanders was hit first time, the ball flying inches wide. A few minutes later another clever lay-off by Vickers, this time to Scott McMullen, resulted in a piledriver of a shot from 25 yards which the home keeper saved well. At the other end, a good cross into the Alnwick penalty area was headed just wide by the Northumbria centre forward. Alnwick took the lead with 17 minutes played. An excellent ball by Vickers to Swordy out wide was laid off to Carl Sanders who crossed in first time, The ball was cleared by a defender only to Catlow who hit an unstoppable first-time shot from 20 yards into the bottom left-hand corner. Five minutes later Alnwick doubled their lead. A free-kick by Jason Belisle over the Northumbria defence found James Swordy who raced clear and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper into the net. Although two goals down, Northumbria didn't panic, and tried to play their way back into the game but it was the visitors who had the last attack of the first half when good interplay between Moscrop and Swordy set up Vickers but his shot was just wide, giving Alnwick a two-goal lead at half-time. Ten minutes after the restart a good ball from Jason Belisle to Swordy was back-heeled to Moscrop. His ball into the path of McMullen was fiercely struck but it flew just over the crossbar. With an hour gone, a Northumbria corner was cleared to the edge of the box, where it fell to a forward whose shot beat Wayne Belisle in Alnwick's goal, but the ball was cleared off the line by the covering Liam Smart to deny the home team. The following 25 minutes became stalemate with Northumbria pressing forward looking for a goal only to be held by a resolute Alnwick defence. With the minutes remaining Alnwick brought on Jamie Chapman to replace McMullen followed shortly after by David McCann coming on for Moscrop. With time running out substitute McCann played a lovely ball inside the full-back to Swordy, who shot from the angle of the box, the keeper at full stretch managing to tip the ball round the post. In the dying seconds, the keeper again saved brilliantly to deny Neil Catlow and the game ended in a two-goal victory for Alnwick. Team: W Belisle, L Smart, N Catlow, A Tate, C Henderson, J Belisle (capt), J Moscrop, S McMullen, T Vickers, J Swordy, C Sanders. Subs: R Brown, B Brooks, R Penman, J Chapman, D MCann, P Laing. FJT Cladding man-of-the-match: C Sanders.
