The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor Well I could easily use this column to be negative following last weekend’s defeat. Instead though, I’m going to mention some of the positives from this season so far. Goals Scored We have scored 36 league goals so far this season. At the current rate we will beat the previous total of the last 2 seasons. Goalscoring Strikers For too long the club relied on the goals of Tony Brown. This season, we have 4 players that have scored more than Tony, reducing the burden on him. The Pitch It will start to take a bit of a hammering with the weather changing, but for months I would put money on us having the best pitch in the league. Hours and hours of labour from Ian Hogg provide our club with that surface. Season Tickets This season we have sold more than ever before since we returned to the Northern League. Sponsorship We have more players sponsored this season than ever before. And pitch sponsorship has raised more this season only half way through that it did all of last season. Entertainment Goals (even though they are are both ends) make football entertaining for the fans. We (the fans) have seen an absolute boatload this season, and I would much prefer that than coming to watch a 0-0 every week. Watching Your Local Team Last minute winners against the league leaders. Pints in the bar looking out into the ground. The Great Escape. Value for money? The professional game doesn’t even come close. www.facebook.com/ alnwicktownafc Twitter: @alnwicktownafc

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents TOW LAW TOWN Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely good value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie

Goalkeeper: Sean Straker Straker looks set to be the new number 1 following the departure of Dan Mullen. Good shot stopper and a big lad. Wouldn’t like to get in the way of a punch.

Chris Boyes

Goalkeeper / Coach: Brian Brooks Brooka has signed on again this term ‘just in case’. Our new Tom Vickers, only available when the cricket is finished.

Available to Sponsor

Defender: Tom Macpherson Super Tom is set for a spell on the sidelines due to a ligament injury, but has put in some excellent performances at the heart of the defence before injury. Defender: Ross Straughan Waited for his chance, and he’s taken it at the centre of defence. Looks set to be part of the back 4 for years to come. Defender: Gloire Mbiavanga Our pacey French full-back has returned for a 2nd season at the club. Young player of the year last term. Bags of potential. Not much English in him.

Keith and Linda Douglas

Defender: Daniel Palmer Dan has joined this term from Red Row, and has taken the jump from North Northumberland League to Northern League in his stride. Famous online due to a ‘tackle’.

Available to Sponsor

Defender / Midfielder : Danny Lowes Possibly the longest serving player at the club (on a full time basis now), Danny can do a job anywhere along the back 4 and on the wing. Just got a cracking tattoo. Defender / Midfielder: Kieran Hogg Nippa has taken the matchday captains armband this term, and is putting in some good performances at both full back and centre midfield. Versatile. Defender / Midfielder / Coach: Bryan Murray The 472 will be in touch with Muzza at some point to get their trophy returned. Retirement? What retirement?!

Today’s Opponents - Tow Law Town The "Lawyers" were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. The Lawyers finished second in the league in the 1998/99 season. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay "Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January". Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on it's first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton. The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much improved state of the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board.

Today’s Opponents - Tow Law Town Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season but is still a member of the committee. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Their places have been taken over by John Flynn as Chairman and Kevin McCormick as Treasurer. Bernard Fairbairn continued as Secretary until 2007, having been in the post since 1961 – at grand total of 46 years (“A prisoner would get less for murder.”) Steve Moralee took on the role of Club Secretary. During 2004, John Flynn stood down as Club Chairman. Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season, Harry Hodgson took a well deserved retirement from the Club. His replacement, Sandra Gordon becomes the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League. Billy Hall who played for Blackpool and Manchester City returned to Tow Law after his playing days and became the teams trainer. He remained a staunch supporter until he died in January 2000, aged 98. He had been the Northern Leagues and the Football Leagues oldest surviving player. Billy was a member of the League Championship teams in the 1920s. In recent times the Lawyers most famous player was the England International Chris Waddle who transferred to Newcastle in 1980. Steve Howard who moved onto Hartlepool United in 1996 before becoming Northampton Towns record signing at £120,000 before moving to Luton Town in 2001, Steve has become a legend with Luton Town scoring over 100 goals for the “Hatters” with 96 of these being league goals, also playing as a centre half following an injury crisis in the club, Steve is the 3rd all time leading goal scorer for Luton Town also winning two promotions with the club. He then made a move to Derby County in 2006, scoring many vital goals for the Rams before moving on loan to Leicester City in 2008 where he made the move a permanent one, The Scottish “B” International has spent the last five seasons at Leicester City and has become a lynch pin in the sides success.
