Another weekend of football written off by the weather. Strange weekend with most games north of Newcastle postponed, yet all the Durham games survived the weather. Looked forward to a big game on Wednesday as well, but the weather also put an end to that with Esh Winning being waterlogged. Defeat for Birtley on the Monday night was a good result for us, maintaining a 7 point gap with a game in hand. We took a point from today’s visitors earlier in the season. Looking for more of the same today, if not 3! Cheers, Cook.
Editor’s Column
It’s been a while since I’ve had to write a column for the programme thanks to contributions from Management and our Media Officer. First thing, welcome to Whickham and today’s match officials. I hope you had a safe journey here and on the way home. Whickham are around mid-table at present, and come into the game winning 7 of their previous 10 games, so we won’t be taking them lightly. Club related business, we have a limited number of 100 club tickets remaining for this year. The first draw takes place at March’s committee meeting, so we’re looking to get these spaces filled today if possible. Anyone can enter, it’s £20 for 10 draws, with monthly prizes of £50, £30 and £20. There is also a bonus draw at Christmas for £250. All profits go to the club, and provide much needed revenue over the summer months when there is no real income coming in. We’re still looking for Match and Ball sponsors for all of our remaining home games this season. If you know of a business that would be interested, please get in touch. Best of luck to the lads today. 3 points today could put us 10 points clear of the relegation places which would be massive for us, and would help Tommy to sleep a bit better at night. Alnwick will face a tough test as they play host to an in form Whickham side in a clash that has an outside importance to several players and management. Alnwick will be looking to bounce back from a defeat in their previous game two weeks ago as Tow Law Town ran out 3-1 winners against the Northumbrian side. However the performance was pleasing and confidence is still reasonably high after the 2-1 win at Crook in the midweek before the Tow Law clash. Whickham will also be high on confidence after an impressive 3-0 home win over Heaton Stannington last Friday, which has saw them win three games in the last four games (with the defeat being an inevitable defeat to South Shields). The Home Guard’s recent form sees them sit fourth in the form guide with four wins, two draws and only the one defeat in the last six, seeing them climb to 13th in the overall Northern League Division Two table. 25 year-old striker Mark Fitzpatrick is the top scorer for Whickham this season netting 10 league goals in 24 games, picking up one in that win over Heaton. The outside interest of the game comes from the clash of work-mates in the game. Alnwick’s players and Newcastle United Women’s team managers Thomas Butler (first team) and Andrew Inness (Development team) as well as our manager Adam Laidlaw (women’s team coach) and myself (women’s team match reporter) face up against the Women’s development team assistant manager and Whickham keeper Alex Curran for the first time since Laidlaw’s management and subsequent signings happened. Assistant manager of Alnwick Ross Flintoft is also a work colleague of Curran’s. Alnwick have a strong squad for the clash, however training has been hindered over the last week with the midweek cancellation of the Esh Winning game to blame, however the lads will be determined to repeat the result of the Crook game in their first game back at St. James’ Park since. Come along and support the lads as they search for the first home win of Laidlaw’s reign. Kick-off is 3pm at St. James’ Park.

Club History
Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.
Club History
The club now faces its 5th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. In 2015-16 we look forward to another positive year, with a new management team in place and fresh ideas for the future. Whickham FC Club History The club was formed in 1944 under the name of Axwell Park Colliery Welfare, although they were colloquially termed the Home Guard Team! In the early days they played in the Derwent Valley League, before switching to the Northern Combination and, in 1974, to the Wearside League. Whickham enjoyed quite a degree of success at this level before joining the Northern League Second Division in 1988.Having reached the Semi Final of the FA Vase in 1978/79 losing to Almondsbury Greenway, It was in 1981 that Whickham had their finest hour, going all the way to the Twin Towers in the final of the FA Vase, after a titanic struggle, to overcome Windsor & Eton in the semi Final. An estimated 5,000 fans followed Whickham to Wembley. Willenhall, a Midlands Club, awaited Whickham on the big day. In a gripping Final Whickham came back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 at full time with goals from Alan Scott and Ronnie Williamson taking the game into Extra-time. Ecstasy followed when Billy Cawthra broke way to win it 3-2 to send the Vase back up to Tyneside. This success leaves us as the last North East based club to win a National Final at the old Wembley Stadium which is now re-built, our clubs little piece of History. Whickham again nearly reached Wembley in 1983/84 before losing in their 3rd Semi Final in a controversial game in the 2nd leg at home against Stansted which saw 2 Whickham players sent off in a bad tempered game. After just one season in the 2nd Division under the management of Billy Hodgson the club gained promotion for the first time into the 1st Division in 1988/89 and spent 3 seasons there before being relegated in 19991/92. Another Promotion came in 19994/95 when they won the 2nd Division. A further two seasons was spent in the 1st Division before another relegation in 1996/97 back into the 2nd Division where they’ve remained since. After Billy’s reign the club struggled to find its identity and with funds really tight they struggled to compete and although 3 or 4 managers took over, the club found itself in a perilous position 1999/00 when without the intervention of Tony Ainley the club was in grave danger of going out of business. Tony’s reign started with no players and no money and although his first two seasons were really about survival the club was once again safely settled in the Northern League. Over the next 3 or 4 years the club undertook major changes and the hard Work was rewarded when after a fantastic run defeating 4 1st Division sides on the way the club found itself in the final of the Prestigious Durham Challenge Cup and after being second best for long spells against a very good Billingham Synthonia side, two late goals from Kenny Boyle and Ian Robson snatched Whickham an amazing victory. The Following season we followed the capture of the DCC by winning the newly named Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup (2nd Division Cup) by defeating Penrith in an exciting Penalty Shoot out. In our defence of the DCC that season, we also reached the Semi Final of the DCC in our defence of that Trophy before losing a close game away at Chester-le-Street. After Tony decided to relinquish the managerial post we promoted club Physio Terry Ritson to the managers job with Robin Falcus coming in as his assistant. They took the club to 2 top 10 finishes before they both decided to move on at the end of last season. Our aim was to keep the managers job in house and we were delighted when Neil Saxton agreed to take the job having spent the season assisdting Terry and Robin, he promoted our long serving skipper Kris Holmes as his assistant amd brought in Craig Heward aswell as again promoting the clubs longest serving player Paul Cavanagh as his backroom team.In 2012/13 Neil left the Club and we asked Robin Falcus to return as manager which he did, the 2012/13 season was a tough learning curve for Robin and Kris Holmes his assistant, but we decided as a club we'd stick with a plan and as we enter this season we have had an excellent pre-season over seen by Johnny Larkin and having brought in 10 new players to bolster and add depth to our squad we felt that season we were better equipped to be competing at the top of the second Division. Jonny Larkin left the club in 2014 to take up a full time coaching position at Middlesbrough FC. At the start of the 2015/2016 season Paul Andison returned to the club in the role of Assistant manager/coach. The clubs past may be chequered and not without success, but we believe we currently have on a very limited budget got this Football club running very much on the right lines and we continue to move forward with optimism, in saying that the exciting if challenging changes we are looking to implement will hopefully allow us to continue to improve all aspects of the club and hopefully build with genuine ambitions to be pushing for a Promotion spot again. Easier said than done we accept, but changing the way we run the club can only be a benefit whatever happens. To finish with a thought 'Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results' We like most of Non-league clubs must change the way we run this Football club, embrace the future as it could be argued we've been insane too long! Good Luck to all our Teams this season and hopefully we'll continue to enjoy some good games and results whilst looking to make even more friends in and around the Northern League

Steven Aiston: (S) 25 years old, Steven is in his 3rd season at Whickham, after a year at 1st division Consett. Alan Armstrong: (D) 31 years old. Recently signed. Matthew Atkin: (M) 28 years old. An end to end midfielder, with an eye for goals. After 2 injury hit seasons, and a major op, Matty will be a major player this season. Ian Balmain: (M) 21 years old, signed from Jarrow Roofing. Liam Barnett: (S) 26 years old. Liam is in his 3rd season at Whickham. Sean Best: (M) 27 years old. Sean is a quick, attacking right sided midfielder. Kallum Broadhead: (M) 20 years old, a member of our excellent U18’s team, at home anywhere down the right flank. Andrew Brown: (D) 28 years old, ex Prudhoe Town and Walker Central. A regular in defence last season. David Clasper: (D) 28 years old. Signed from Whickham Sporting club. Scott Donaldson: (D) 26 years old Scott is in his second season at the club, and is a very solid centre back who also chips in with his share of goals. David Fitzpatrick: (D/M) 24 years old David is back for another spell after being at Whickham as a youngster. Previously with Ryton and Tow Law. Mark Fitzpatrick: (S) 24 years old Mark is a quick and strong striker, In his 2 nd spell with Whickham. Previously with Ryton and Tow Law. Last season’s top goal scorer. Jordan Fraser: (D) 27 years old. In his 2nd season. Signed from Chester le Street. Nick Hay: (M) 20 years old, signed in close season after spending last season at Gateshead FC. Nick is at present on loan to Rutherford FC. Richard Heiniger: (GK) 27 years old Richard was signed having previously taken 2 years out of the game. Danny Henderson: (M) 33years old. Danny has been at Whickham FC for most of his career. Daniel Hill: (S) 24 years old striker signed from Esh Winning. Kris Holmes: (D) 37 years old central defender, and assistant manager. Still one of the best central defenders in the 2nd division. Craig Jelley: (M) 32 years old, Craig is a solid midfielder. Previously at Ryton & Crawcrook. Sam MacIntosh: (M) 26 years old. Re-signed after a spell at Crook Town. John Martin: (M/D). 27 years old, John is in his 4th season at Whickham. Equally happy playing in the centre of the defence or in central midfield.. Previously with Birtley Town. John Mordey: (GK) 28 years old keeper, John has only missed three matches in the last two seasons, and that was for a harsh sending off. Previously at Ryton & Crawcrook . Jack Moulding: (D/M) 22 years old. Jack came through our U21 team. A regular last season. Previously at Ryton & Crawcrook. May miss the rest of the season with a bad knee injury. Christopher Naisby: (D) 26 years old defender. Richard also plays for Whickham Sporting Club, and is a recent signing. Rudi Nellis: (M) 26 years old. A strong central midfielder. Previously with Newcastle Benfield. Rudi is in his 4 th season at The Glebe. Levi Oman: (M) 20 years old. An ex Whickham U18’s player. In his 2 nd season at the club. Previously with Birtley Town. Ross Peareth: (M) 24 years old Ross, is in his second spell with us after a short time at Newcastle Benfield. Has played for Whickham for 5 seasons. A strong and commanding midfielder and club captain. Closing in on 200 appearances for the club. Scott Robson: (M) 28 years old and a very experienced midfielder having spent time at Jarrow Roofing and Hebburn Town in the 1st division. Craig Rook: (M/D) 27 years old and in his 7th year with the club, Craig is a wide left sided midfielder, who also has an eye for goal. Now has over 200 appearances for the club. Tom Soutar (D) 20 years old. Excellent defender, very cool when put under any pressure. Ex Cowdenbeath and Whickham U18’s. The club’s Player of the Year AND Player’s Player of the Year last season. Scott Swanston: (S) 27 years old. ‘Swanny is like a rubber ball, he keeps bouncing back to the Glebe. Signed from Crook Town having previously been at Morpeth Town. Scott is a handful for any defender. Kyle Wharton: (M) 17 years old. Signed recently. Ross Wilson: (M) 18 years old. Ross has been with us for 3 seasons now. Ross has just left Gateshead’s Academy team.

Match Report
Alnwick finally pick up 3 points with a great hard fought win over Crook away from home. Crook Town 1-2 Alnwick Wright 30’- Jackson 23’, Hay 54’ By Media Officer, Mark Craggs. The first goal was scored with 23 minutes gone, Darren Riddell’s shot from the edge of the box was too hot to handle for keeper Ryan Graham. Graham parried the ball straight to James Jackson who hit through a quickly formed crowd to put Alnwick one up. The lead was rather short lived with Crook equalising in the 30th minute. A corner landed kindly at the feet of Jonathon Wright inside the six yard box. Wright fired home giving Callum Brooks no chance. Crook almost scored again as Callum Johnston hit a first time shot across goal but it flew just wide of the far post. Crook went close again after a series of defensive errors at the back for Alnwick, Damon Ellis was presented with an open goal, however awfully of balance the ball traveled very high and rather wide of the target, Alnwick got lucky. Josh Hay went close to a debut goal in the first half as a bullet header from Thomas Butler’s corner was well saved. The score remained 1-1 as the game entered the break. Jackson nearly added a second five minutes into the second half, his shot on the turn was saved by Graham from the bottom corner at the near post. The Alnwick lead was restored in the 54th minute as Josh Hay did get his debut goal with a calm finish, slotting his shot just under the keeper, after a great defence loosing through ball from Danny Lowes. 2-1 to Alnwick. Jonathyn Quinn had a chance to add a third but his half volley was hit straight at Graham. With 10 minutes to go, Brooks saved Alnwick with an outstanding reaction save to a powerful header Crook skipper Jamie Tunstall. Hay could have netted a second after a good cross from deep by Lowes but a heavy first touch let him down and Graham collected. It wasn't to matter however as Alnwick took home all three points in and the first ones of Adam Laidlaw’s reign. 2-1 the final score, and Alnwick travel to Tow Law on Saturday looking for another 3 to make it a week to remember.
