The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor Well it’s been an up and down couple of weeks! 8 Goals were leaked against Seaham Red Star, and Norton & Stockton Ancients. The Norton result was our heaviest defeat away from home in the Northern League. Not a nice statistic to start the programme with, but I think it’s safe to say it contributed towards a reaction against league leaders Team Northumbria. What a game, and what a result. There are few feelings in football that are better than a late winner. It’s a result that makes people sit up and take notice of the club. Team Northumbria had only conceded 6 goals in 11 league games prior to Tuesday night. We put 4 past them, and it could quite easily have been more. Yes we rode our luck a bit, they missed some chances, but so did we. We made the side that are top of the table look very beatable. They didn’t like it up them! Credit to all of the players. Performances like that (minus the mad 5 / 10 minutes before half time!) will see this club finish much higher. We need to stay calm if a goal is conceded. We’ve shown plenty of times this season, we will score goals, the only thing that needs to improve is the goals conceded column. I’m looking forward to our first clean sheet of the season! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Best of luck to Ian Hogg who has set up The Tea Hut at the ground. I had a look inside before the game on Tuesday night, and he’s done a cracking job. The prices must also be mentioned. Very cheap compared to some places the club go to. He has what you need on offer at a football game. Pie and a cuppa. I’m sure it will be a success. Pop in a have a look for yourselves. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If anyone would be interested in helping with the club website writing match reports then please get in touch. I’m struggling to find the time at the minute and a helping hand would be greatly appreciated. The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents WHICKHAM Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You will soon be able to enjoy a hot drink and food in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. We hope to have this up and running in the very near future. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie

Today’s Opponents - Whickham Club History The club was formed in 1944 under the name of Axwell Park Colliery Welfare, although they were colloquially termed the Home Guard Team! In the early days they played in the Derwent Valley League, before switching to the Northern Combination and, in 1974, to the Wearside League. Whickham enjoyed quite a degree of success at this level before joining the Northern League Second Division in 1988.Having reached the Semi Final of the FA Vase in 1978/79 losing to Almondsbury Greenway, It was in 1981 that Whickham had their finest hour, going all the way to the Twin Towers in the final of the FA Vase, after a titanic struggle, to overcome Windsor & Eton in the semi Final. An estimated 5,000 fans followed Whickham to Wembley. Willenhall, a Midlands Club, awaited Whickham on the big day, but there were problems. Paul Allon, who had notched the crucial injury- time winner in the semi, suffered injury before the Final and had to be content with a place on the bench. Ironically, this made room for lan Diamond, who had suffered the same fate whilst with Blue Star in 1978. The Final began horribly, with Willenhall going 2-0 up in the opening ten minutes. The task of winning the Vase appeared to be a forlorn one, but the gloom was partially dispelled when fullback Alan Scott quickly halved the deficit. Then, an accidental collision with Cawthra led to the Willenhall goalkeeper being stretchered off. Was the tide turning? Twelve minutes into the second half, and Whickham were level, thanks to Ronnie Williamson. 2-2 it was, and 2-2 it stayed till the 90-minute mark. Who could dig that bit deeper, and find the extra reserves of strength needed to life the trophy? The answer was supplied in the dying seconds of the first half of extra-time. Billy Cawthra broke away and launched a potent shot which, though blocked, ricocheted off a hapless Willenhall defender into the net. 3-2, and the FA Vase was headed back to Whickham! This success leaves us as the last North East based club to win a National Final at the now re-built Wembley Stadium, our clubs little piece of History. Whickham again nearly reached Wembley in 1983/84 before losing in their 3rd Semi Final in a controversial game in the 2nd leg at home against Stansted which saw 2 Whickham players sent off in a bad tempered game. After just one season in the 2nd Division under the management of Billy Hodgson the club gained promotion for the first time into the 1 st Division in 1988/89 and spent 3 seasons there before being relegated in 19991/92. Another Promotion came in 19994/95 when they won the 2 nd Division. A further two seasons was spent in the 1st Division before another relegation in 1996/97 back into the 2 nd Division where they’ve remained since. After Billy’s reign the club struggled to find its identity and with funds really tight they struggled to compete and although 3 or 4 managers took over, the club found itself in a perilous position 1999/00 when without the intervention of manager Tony Ainley the club was in grave danger of going out of business. Tony’s reign started with no players and no money and although his first two seasons were really about survival the club was once again safely settled in the Northern League. Over the last 4 or 5 years the club has undertaken major changes and the hard Work was rewarded when after a fantastic run defeating 4 1 st Division sides on the way the club found itself in the final of the Prestigious Durham Challenge Cup and after being second best for long spells against a very good Billingham Synthonia side, two late goals from Kenny Boyle and Ian Robson snatched Whickham an amazing victory. The Following season we followed the capture of the DCC by winning the newly named Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup (2nd Division Cup) by defeating Penrith in an exciting Penalty shoot out. In our defence of the DCC also in that season, we also reached the Semi Final of the DCC in our defence of that Trophy before losing a close game away at Chester le Street. On the present management side Robin Falcus continues as manager, with Kris Holmes his assistant. Jonny Larkin is our coach. Saj Ahmed continues as our Physio. Our committee for the 2014-15 season consists of: Brian McCartney continues as Chairman (and all the other jobs he does). Les Dixon is our General Manager and Secretary. Mick Tucker is our match day Secretary. Alan Walton is our Treasurer, Ash Rook is our committee man, and so much more! We have 2 Junior sides involved with the club and this year there’ll be an Under 13’s, and Under 17’s teams The clubs past may be chequered and not without success but we believe, on a very limited budget we’ve got this football club running very much on the right lines and go into this season with continued optimism, to try and continue to improve and hopefully build on last season and be pushing for a promotion spot again. Easier said than done, especially on one of the leagues smallest playing budgets but with or without money we believe Whickham FC will continue to compete at the right end of the table and continue to be seen as one of the leagues friendliest clubs, which is important to us, and we hope to be competitive once again in the Northern league Second Division. We know none of our players are at Whickham for the money, because if they are they must have misheard the manager when he discussed money, or the lack of it. Good Luck to all our Teams this season and hopefully we'll continue to enjoy some good games and results whilst looking to make even more friends in and around the Northern League.

A Blast From The Past - 2012 Whickham 1-1 Alnwick Town Report courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette. A SECOND-HALF Gary Patterson goal earned Alnwick Town a well-deserved point at Whickham on Saturday. The long-standing senior player netted in the 55th minute to cancel out Steven Aiston’s first-half opener. The away-day point was the least a threadbare Town deserved, after a positive performance from the Northumbrians who were once again missing a string of first -team regulars. But as has been the case recently, the St James’ Park outfit used its squad players to full effect, and those who came in did the side proud, yet again. The draw also pulled Town, who have already secured their Northern League status for next season, closer to reaching the 50-point mark – with the Northumbrians now on 48, and counting. Although, the black ‘n’ whites may well feel they should have reached that half-century milestone against Whickham, as they were the better side in Saturday’s contest. But it was still a point on their travels, in a performance which showed the strength of the squad and the club, and saw Town bounce back from the defeat to high-flying Gillford Park the week before. Searching for a league double over Whickham, following a 3-1 victory earlier in the campaign, the St James’ Park side started brightly and had the best of the early exchanges, with Paul Hodge, Bryan Murray and Jon Colley all having chances. But Whickham took the lead against the run of play when Aiston clipped the ball over Town keeper Brian Brooks. The ball bounced against the post but the linesman signalled that it had crossed the line. Behind at the break, the Northumbrians were left to rue a number of missed chances. They didn’t have to wait too long after the interval though to grab the goal that their play merited. Ten minutes into the second period, Town equalised when a poor Whickham clearance from an Alnwick corner was fed back into a packed area and Patterson forced the ball over the line. Shortly after, Damien Baston tested home keeper Scott Cresswell, who pushed the Town player’s shot over. On the hour, in a rare Whickham attack, Scott Robson hit a screamer towards goal, only to see Brooks make a superb one-handed save to keep the scores level. At the other end, with 71 minutes on the clock, Murray saw his shot tipped over the bar. Neither side was able to find the winner, resulting in a point apiece. Alnwick Town (v Whickham): Brooks, Trotter, Hogg, McPherson, Dundas, Patterson, Baston, Murray, Colley, McFall (Tait), Hodge (Lowes). Subs: Straughan, Brown.
