Media Officer Mark Craggs
After the massive disappointments of both Saturday and Wednesday past, Alnwick will want to put on a good display against fellow strugglers Willington writes Media Officer Mark Craggs. Saturday’s opponents Willington sit in 18th position of the Northern League 2 table, joint on points with Alnwick, with the two sides separated by two goals in goal difference. The last time the two sides met was the 10th October last year when Alnwick took all three points with a 3-2 win over the Blue and Whites. The County Durham side won their midweek clash beating Darlington RA 2-1 at home which ended a three game losing streak. Alnwick will be wanting all three points to make up for the two dropped on Wednesday after losing a two goal lead and needing a late minute equaliser to salvage anything from the game. Alnwick will have a decent squad for Saturday’s clash, with a second opportunity for a debut for winger Dominic Schiavetta who watched Wednesday’s draw from the bench.
Editor’s Column
First off, massive thank you to today’s Match Sponsor, Northern Structures Limited, who are also sponsoring 2 Balls before the season ends. Support from local businesses is greatly appreciated and helps to keep the club in the Northern League from a financial perspective. Welcome to our visitors today Willington, who like ourselves are desperate for 3 points to edge away from the relegation zone. With it looking increasingly likely that 2 sides will be promoted for the first time in a couple of seasons, we need to get points on the board. For those who haven’t been to Willington before, it’s a cracking ground. From a personal point of view, I’m envious of the main stand they have. Our cow shed has been called ‘stand porn’ before by groundhoppers for not being a ‘flatpack’ stand, but Willington’s is proper old school, and a sign of previous glories. Never know, one day it might be us, and hopefully in the future if we do get a move to a new ground then we could keep away from the Ikea furniture and maintain some character. We have a couple of players creeping towards the 200 appearances mark. Tom Mac is currently on 198, and Tony Brown is on 192. a fantastic achievement for two fans’ favourites and hopefully still plenty more to come. Loyalty is hard to come by these days, and these 2 lads (along with a couple of others) have been here since we came back to the Northern League. Cheers, Cook

Club History
Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.
Club History
The club now faces its 5th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. In 2015-16 we look forward to another positive year, with a new management team in place and fresh ideas for the future. Opposition Info
Willington is a former pit town whose colliery closed down in 1967, it’s situated seven miles south-west of Durham city on the A690 road towards Crook. Willington Temperance were formed in 1906, originating from the Temperance Club in the town, playing in the Auckland and District League. In 1911 the club dropped their surname and moved from their West End ground, purchasing land from Lord Boyne on Hall Lane, where they immediately spent £200 on levelling, draining and relaying the pitch. This was the same year the club switched to the Northern League, where they played for the next 94 years, becoming league champions on three occasions in 1913-14, 1926-27 and 1929-30. The club also won the League Cup eight times, but their greatest cup success came in the FA Amateur Cup. In 1939 the club reached the final, their opponents were the all conquering Bishop Auckland, after being the better side in a goalless ninety minutes, they lost out in extra time, eventually succumbing to three unanswered goals in front of 20,200 at Roker Park. In 1950 they reached the final for a second time in a repeat of the final eleven years earlier, Bishops were making their 13th final appearance and it proved unlucky for them, as Willington walloped their County Durham neighbours 4-0, in front of 88,000 at Wembley Stadium. The Northern League formed a Second Division in 1982-83, in that season the club finished bottom of the new top division, they then spent their remaining life in the Northern League amongst its second tier. The club ran into trouble off the field in December 1996, being were very close to folding after running into a variety of problems, resulting in team manager Malcolm Smith taking over the reigns as acting chairman and a new administration put together, who worked hard and kept the club afloat. On the field things didn’t improve either, the side struggled at the foot of the Second Division, then after finishing bottom in 2004-05, the club stepped down to the Wearside League, being replaced by Darlington RA and Ryton. The club were promoted back to the Ebac Northern League in 2012/13 under the management of Rob Lee and finished mid table in both subsequent seasons. The start of the new season was difficult and Rob stepped down making way for new manager Gary Innes.
Opposition Info Willington 2-3 Alnwick Town
Alnwick had three unavailable with one playing for the NFA team and two long term injuries but still fielded a full squad of 16. Alnwick were determined to reverse their last visit to Willington and their 6-1 defeat. The pitch had plenty of grass on it but hid a soft, bumpy surface. Willington attacked up the hill and immediately showed that their main tactic was going to be the long ball, and had a half chance within five minutes when Kenny Wilks forced Town keeper Luc Glasper into a full stretch save. Alnwick, playing their fast passing game nearly broke the deadlock when Tony Brown squeezed a ball through to James Jackson into Chris Glass but his shot was just wide with home keeper Chris Sawyer a spectator. Much against the run of play Willington were awarded a penalty when Josh Willis was adjudged to have brought Ross Clark down; Dan Lee stepped up to score: 1-0. The game was very fast moving when after 25 minutes Jamie Dixon went up the right, beat three men, crossed to James Jackson to rifle the ball in: 1-1. Town keeper Glasper was called upon to punch a good shot wide. There followed an ugly incident when Tony Brown was elbowed in the face, leaving him prostrate on the ground but the referee allowed play on and it nearly resulted in their second goal when Ken Wicks made space but hit a poor shot. This was followed by a comedy of errors when Willington were awarded a free kick 10 yards inside the Alnwick half. A high ball landed in the penalty area between two defenders, bounced up and over Glasper a few minutes before half-time, scored by Will Preston: 2-1. Alnwick were now kicking up-hill, and went on the attack straightaway through Ross Gair down the right and sent a great cross just eluding the Alnwick forwards. Willington still maintained their long ball policy which nearly paid dividends with chances falling to James Seymour and Will Preston but a combination of good tackles and alert keeping nullified the danger. It was a move from Ross Gair to David Brown who controlled the ball, shielding it from a defender in the box to swivel and shot just past. It was then an attack by Chris Glass broke down the right out back to David Brown but again he was out of luck to see his shot saved one-handed near the post and away for a corner. The home team had two fast front runners in Will Preston and Reece Brown but the Town defence had to be quick and on one occasion a last minute tackle by Danny Lowe. The pressure was building on Willington with Alnwick’s fitness taking over and from a corner on the left Rob Baker (on for Kris Willis) took it and scored direct from the flag: 2As the game went into the last ten minutes there was only going to be one winner when Jamie Dixon passed inside for Ross Gair to overlap and cross for David Brown to shoot but home keeper Chris Sawyer was just up to it to again deny David to push aside. With only five minutes to go, Alnwick’s pressure paid off from another corner which was headed in by Jackson through a crowded penalty area to score the winner and his second of the game .

Match Report
It was definitely a game for the neutral at Birtley one groundhopper said leaving the ground, as both sides failed to capitalise on chances to win the game and take a share of the spoils. Birtley Town 3 - 3 Alnwick Town (Ross Straughan (OG), Smith, Townsend; Robson, Macpherson, Baker) The first half was all about the away side, with Alnwick creating plenty of chances and playing the better football. Lewis Robson had the first chance of the game, breaking through but Birtley’s keeper kept him at bay. Robson wasn’t to be denied though, as another through ball sent him clear, and he made no mistake smashing home the opening goal to put Alnwick 1-0 up. It was 2-0 shortly after, a deep cross was met by the head of Tom Macpherson who bulleted home to put Alnwick 2-0 up and cruising. Further chances came and went for the home side with a mixture of good goalkeeping and the wrong bounces keeping the home side in the game. Kieran Hogg almost made it 3, but his dipping freekick from distance rattled off the front of the crossbar. He had another chance a minute later, but this time it crept just over the bar. Alnwick were in control, but a minute before half-time Birtley were given a way back into the game. A freekick was swung into the box, and defender Ross Straughan managed to guide the ball past the helpless Callum Brooks in goal. 2 half, and it seemed as if the own goal knocked Alnwick’s confidence. Birtley’s confidence grew as Alnwick took their foot off the gas, and two freekicks in the space of 10 minutes had the home side coming from behind to lead 3-2. The first cross was punched by Brooks to the feet of the Birtley attacker who placed the ball through a crowd to draw the scores level. The 3 goal, again a ball into the box, was diverted towards goal, with Brooks saving, but only to the feet of another Birtley striker to give them the lead. A complete turnaround, and despair for the visiting players. nd
rd
Alnwick were given a chance to get back into the game following a red card to Birtley’s captain, who had tested the referee’s patience enough and was given a 2 yellow card for persistent fouls. nd
Alnwick were getting the ball forward but just couldn’t break through Birtley’s defence, who were needing the points as much as Alnwick in the relegation scrap. Just as time was almost up and Alnwick awarded yet another dangerous free-kick, with everyone forward Ross Gair whipped the ball in. The ball was headed across goal, and despite offside appeals, Rob Baker bundled the ball home to bring the scores level at 3-3. Heart breaking for the home side, relief for the away side. Alnwick should have been home and dry after the first 45 minutes, arguably their best football of the season, but the 2 half performance will have to be improved upon as Willington visit St James’ Park on Saturday 5 March in another relegation battle. nd
