The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor Welcome to the 2014-2015 season for our first home game against Willington. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I have to start this programme by thanking all of this season’s programme sponsors, with some returning again from last season. Thanks also to Alyn Brewis who didn’t hesitate to renew his position as the main programme sponsor. The matchday programme finished a very respectable 16th in last season’s Northern League awards. In the national Soccer Club Swap Shop awards, we finished 2nd for the Northern League 2nd Division, and joint 49th nationally out of 976 entrants. This season I’m really hoping for a big push towards the top 10 in the Northern League awards, and to maintain top 50 nationally. Our biggest restriction is the programme inserts being printed in black and white. Usual winners have the luxury of colour inserts. Who knows, maybe this will be our year. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------There have been a number of changes over the summer so far on the playing side. Brian Brooks has of course hung up his gloves, along with Bryan Murray (who you may see in an emergency!). Some players are rumoured to have signed with other local sides. James Jackson has signed for our first opponents of the season Chester-le-Street Town, and Chris Fawcett has signed for North Shields. We wish them well (except against us) for the season. Jon Colley has returned to the club after a season away, and Adam Shanks has returned after a brief spell here during our first season back in the Northern League. Last season’s Young Player of the Year, Gloire Mbiavanga has also returned. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Last season’s encounters with Willington brought 2 draws, 1-1 at Willington and 2-2 in the return fixture. The 2nd encounter was quite a tasty one with 3 red cards, and a late equaliser for us. We’re all hoping for a positive start to the season. Pre-season took a while to get going, with all the goals coming in one go against Whitley Bay A in a 5-3 win. Football is back. Ha’way Alnwick! 472 Follow Alnwick Town on Twitter, Facebook and our Website. @alnwicktownafc , www.facebook.com/alnwicktownafc and www.alnwicktownfc.co.uk
The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents WILLINGTON. Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You will soon be able to enjoy a hot drink and food in ‘The Tea Hut’. We hope to have this up and running mid August. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows,, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.
Tom McKie

Tonight’s Opponents… Willington The club was established in 1906 and joined the Northern League in 1911. They finished as runners-up in their second season, and won the league in 1913–14. In 1925–26 they won the league again, and in 1927–28 they reached the semi-final of the FA Amateur Cup, losing 2–1 to Cockfield in a replay. They won a third Northern League title in 1929–30, and in 1938–39 they reached the final of the Amateur Cup, losing 3–0 to Bishop Auckland at Roker Park, Sunderland. They resigned from the Northern League on 20 March 1940, but rejoined at the end of World War II. In 1945–46 they reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, but lost to Bishop Auckland. In 1949–50 they reached the first round again, losing to Horden Colliery Welfare in a replay. They also reached the final of the Amateur Cup for a second time, this time defeating Bishop Auckland 4–0 at Wembley Stadium before a crowd of 88,000. The following season they entered the FA Cup in the first round, but lost 3–0 to Rochdale. During this period the club finished in the top nine in every season until 1960, but thereafter saw a gradual decline, although they reached the first round of the FA Cup again in 1973–74, losing 6–1 to Blackburn Rovers in a replay. In 1982 the league added a second division, and after finishing bottom of Division One in 1982–83, Willington were relegated to Division Two. The club struggled in the second tier, finishing bottom of the league in 1983–84 and 1991–92, and only finishing in the top ten five times in twenty-two seasons. After finishing bottom again in 2005–06 they were relegated to the Wearside League. They continued to struggle, finishing second from bottom in their first two seasons in the league, and then bottom in 2008–09 and 2009–10. Their traditional local rivals are Crook Town. The club has had a number of famous managers including Malcolm Allison and Alan Durban in 1984 and also Eddie Kyle, Alan Murray and Stan Cummins. The current manager is Robert Lee. A Blast From The Past Alnwick Town 3-0 Willington - Report courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette AFTER the fiasco of Thursday evening when South Shields only turned up with six players, forcing a cancellation just before kick-off, Alnwick faced relegated Willington in their last game of the season. The visitors at least fulfilled their obligation to play the fixture and did so with pride and passion. Alnwick started off lively, Ryan Copeland seizing on a loose ball to play in James Swordy, but the striker's shot was saved comfortably by visiting keeper Sawyer. Paul Laing met a cross from Swordy and he again shot straight at the keeper. With only five minutes played, Alnwick lost James Jeffrey because of a hamstring injury and he was replaced by Richard Kirby. The visitors first effort on goal came with ten minutes played, a shot by Seymour being blocked by Jason Belisle. A minute later a long ball played out of defence by Burn found Sean Joseph whose chip shot almost beat Belisle in Alnwick's goal. In the next minute Alnwick took the lead. Neil Catlow found Richard Kirby inside the visitors' box. His shot hit goalkeeper Sawyer and the rebound came straight back at Kirby and into the net. The visitors' next effort came courtesy of a free kick, Michael Joseph driving in a shot from 25 yards straight through to Wayne Belisle, who saved well. James Swordy then headed wide, before he had a good shot saved by Sawyer. At the other end, Sean Joseph was unlucky with a beautifully curled shot which, but for a slight deflection off a defender, was heading for the top corner of the net. On 25 minutes a scramble in the Alnwick penalty area resulted in Jason Belisle blocking two shots, one from Watkins, the other from Seymour before Watkins blasted the ball over the bar. Alnwick doubled their lead after 26 minutes when Gary Patterson laid off a good ball for James Swordy who drove his shot beyond the reach of Sawyer. The main danger man for Willington was Sean Joseph, and again another a good effort fell his way inside the box, but his lob cleared both Wayne Belisle and the crossbar. Paul Laing was unlucky not to score Alnwick's third when his shot hit the post and Raper cleared the rebound. At the start of the second half Alnwick brought on Ashley Mallaburn to replace Peter Saunders who suffered a calf injury in the first period. Within a minute, Alnwick created a good opening, a long kick from keeper Belisle being flicked on by Mallaburn to strike partner Swordy, but he pulled his effort wide. Willington captain Watkins had his shot saved comfortably before good link-up play by Tenby and Sean Joseph sent in Seymour. Belisle reacted quickly from his goal line and was able to avert the danger. Alnwick scored their third on 57 minutes, Mallaburn finding Catlow whose shot was blocked. The rebound fell to Swordy, who promptly despatched the ball into the far corner of the net for his second goal of the night. A fourth goal for Alnwick by Mallaburn was disallowed by referee Mr Sharp, presumably for pushing. A good team effort from Alnwick, and a spirited performance from Willington. Starting Lineup: W Belisle, B Murray, N Catlow, P Laing, P Saunders, J Belisle (Capt), J Jeffrey, G Patterson, R Copeland, J Swordy, P Yeadon. Subs: A Mallaburn, R Kirby. Match sponsor: G and R Mallaburn Developments. Match refreshments sponsor: The Farm Bakery. Fred Olsen Cruises Man-of-the-Match: B Murray.
