real estate agent is more than just a "sales person." Their job is to act on your behalf as your agent, providing you with advice and guidance and helping you buy or sell a home. You need the most current information about what has sold or is for sale and the only reliable way to get that is with an informed agent. There are currently so many properties on the market it is difficult for a buyer to keep track of them all. If you are in the market to buy or sell, it would be advisable to use a Real Estate Agent who has extensive knowledge and experience in the local market. They can make recommendations that create a win-win situation for both buyer and seller. Hiring a “pro” with the education and experience can save a lot of time in a lengthy process. Real estate agents network with other professionals, such as lawyers and Government officials, who provide the services you will need to buy or sell. They can give you a list of references, such as inspectors, surveyors and appraisors, with whom they have worked and can provide the background information you need to make a wise selection. Agents negotiate well because, unlike most buyers and sellers, they can remove themselves from the emotional aspects of the transaction. Many questions can pop up that were overlooked in the excitement of closing. Maritha Keil and her team at British Virgin Islands Sotheby's International Realty offer the experience and intimate local knowledge necessary to overcome the many hurdles of selling and purchasing property and help to smooth the road to home ownership.

This month, we celebrate Earth Day—the one day of the year dedicated to loving the place we all call home. Living in the Virgin Islands, surrounded by all of nature’s splendors, it’s hard not to celebrate her beauty every day. Acknowledgement is not, however, going to be enough to preserve the environment. Here in the Virgin Islands, we’ve made gradual progress toward going green. In the British Virgins, initiatives to recycle glass products at the GreenVI glass studio in Cane Garden Bay have proved effective, and off-the-grid islands are taking exemplary strides to use alternative methods for primary energy sourcing. And next month, the Island Resources Foundation will present critical environmental profiles to lawmakers with the hopes of implementing preservation policy. In the US Virgins, progress continues with solar and wind energy, and many developments are bidding for LEEDS certifications. However, on both island territories, lawmakers, private citizens and visitors alike each need to do their part to protect our coveted paradise. For this issue, OBMI architect Steve Fox took a look at measures builders and homeowners could take to soften their footprints on our pristine land and seascapes. Simple things, like controlling the size of the building, minimizing the need for expansive retaining walls, and thwarting unnecessary energy consumption methods will go a long way, he explains. Developments on the sparsely populated island of Great Camanoe, off Tortola’s northeastern coastline, stand as testaments to smart building. This month, we visited Coral Beauty, a stunning property nested on Great Camanoe with a bird’s-eye view over Marina Cay to Virgin Gorda. The newly renovated hillside home allows its homeowners and guests to experience the simple bounties offered by nature. Writer Traci O’Dea also visited Frenchmans Estate, a two-part paradisiacal retreat atop Frenchmans Cay. The plantation-style design combines with meticulous attention to detail, making the property completely unique among properties that commonly fit among the Virgin Islands elite. Biologist Shannon Gore reminded us why we should respect our beaches as she delved into the topic of sand mining, which threatens many of our pristine beaches. Through her research, a powerful argument is made to halt the excessive sandmining, that threatens our sandy shores. This Earth Day, and every day, let’s band together and be sure to …

think green.

Standing Up & Falling Down By Stephen L. France

The email of confirmation emerged on my computer, sent by my work colleague, whose name and time on the water should have convinced the fish to reward him with gills by now. From: Owen Waters Subject: Long Bay, Beef Island Red Stripe SUP Relay We are blinged up! Sup team: Colin, Stephen, myself and mighty rock stars Becky Rowlette and Liz Killeen. See you guys there! My stomach commenced activity in championship gymnastics, and heat emitted from my face like a fried egg on a boiling car bonnet. This wasn’t entirely a voluntary decision on my part. In fact, when the idea of forming a team for the February Red Stripe SUP Relay competition arose in an aLG meeting, my response was more of a decline, followed by an abrupt yes—my colleagues had promoted the sport’s simplicity, and I would pay for my casual acceptance of this assertion. I had been given brief details about this alien sport; I knew the acronym SUP stood for Stand Up Paddle; I understood we would be standing on a surfboard-like object in the sea with a paddling instrument; I recognised we would be in a relay; but, most importantly, I knew we had to paddle as fast as possible. This was just the beginning. As I began my internet research, I envisaged and expected that all five of us would be standing on the board, paddling together— something in the meeting about teamwork had inspired the thought. How wrong I was as I gazed at the photos on the HIHO website. I stared at the peculiar tight garments the participants wore, peered at the strange surfboard-type object they stood on, and smiled at the thought that they reminded me of gondolas. How fast could a gondola possibly go? My amusement was short-lived as I noticed that in each photo, the boards had individuals, not teams on them.

My work colleague, VIPY Editor Dan, approached with a grin. “Doing a little research, huh?” he said, explaining his knowledge of the unusual sport. “You’re probably gonna fall, a lot, bump into someone, almost drown…” I walked over to Owen’s desk for a little reassurance. “With the SUP,” I said. “Are we on individual boards?” “Yeah,” said Owen, infecting my face with a sagginess. “Don’t worry Stephen, you’ll be fine.” I nodded and walked back to my desk. The grand day arrived. The white sand glistened, the blue water sparkled, and the sun was ecstatic. Long Bay beach was buzzing with excitement and an undercurrent of fierce competitive spirit. My impending event would see five-person teams competing in a double elimination ladder format. It would seem this London city-guy was about to receive his first taste of competitive water-sports. Directed to a conspicuously bright yellow board, pals Dustyn and Cass Molver began giving me the fast track course in SUP. I could already hear voices in my head like a taunting requiem. You’re probably gonna fall, a lot. Don’t worry

I stared at the peculiar tight garments the participants wore, peered at the strange surfboard-type object they stood on, and smiled at the thought that they reminded me of gondolas. How fast could a gondola possibly go?

Listening harder, I realised what both Cass and Dustyn were saying. “The board is the wrong way.” I jumped off the board and turned it around quickly, hoping no one noticed the epic amateur mistake. I wanted to master SUP fast, so on re-boarding, I made my first attempt to stand. I can do this. I’ve done P90X. I can do this, I said to myself. It was as if the water had read my mind and retorted against my arrogance as I fell off, head first. I could almost hear the sea’s assessment; “You don’t belong here city boy.” The second fall gave my nose a full service cleaning job. As children SUPped past me, I beheld a dreadful revelation that only emerges with maturity—kids were now beating me at sporting activities. When did I get old? Probably around the

Stephen, you’ll be fine. You’re probably gonna fall, a lot. Don’t worry Stephen, you’ll be fine. I was in the water immediately, eager to be an expert in minutes. I mounted the board, up on my knees as instructed. I began to wade through the water with the foreign paddle instrument, maintaining balance and control, but was distracted by shouting from the shore. “You’re going the wrong way!” I heard Cass say. What could she mean?

time when I reminisced about the price of Skittles costing twentyseven pence. The falls kept happening. There was a third, a forth and then a twenty-forth, but my balance was improving. Nonetheless, I had to accept the truth: I didn’t have time to reach competitive level. The moment arrived. I had to make the confession. I approached the ever-enthusiastic aqua-man Owen. “I can’t do this,” I said. “No?” he said.

“No.”

Team NEWBIE takes home third, despite losing a lad.

“Alright chap, we’ll have to find someone else.” The surrender hit as hard as that first fall in the water, but the day was still very enjoyable. If I wasn’t going to SUP, I was at least going to sip a Red Stripe or two. As I watched the competition, I knew I’d made a good judgement. The epic speed at which the teams flew around the course was phenomenal. Who would have thought gondolas could go so fast? Team NEWBIE, who I’d abandoned, did extremely well, but met defeat at the awesome speed of teams Latitude 18 and HIHO in the semi-finals. Eventually, L 18 emerged as the overall victors of the relay races, driving at speeds I did not know were possible in this sport. If you ever get the opportunity to try this water activity, take it, because it’s great fun. Just make sure you have a couple of ice packs waiting for you at home. PY

Gradually Going

Green By Steve Fox, Managing Director OBMI The past decade has seen the rapid rise of the United States’ green building movement. The US Green Building Council has developed from a small fringe group into a hugely influential and respected organisation which has helped to wake up the previously complacent and conservative construction industry to the problems and concerns of irresponsible development. The language of green building has become the norm in the US as well as in Europe and the rest of the world, with developers, architects, contractors and materials suppliers all proclaiming their green credentials. How does this translate for us here in the Virgin Islands and how can we make a difference when designing and building a new home here? Back in 2007 I put together a simple environmental “checklist” for BVI homebuilders which contained 27 items to consider in order to do the right thing, so to speak. This list has helped to inform clients and has served as a constant guide for us when designing. But, as many people are quick to point out, there’s a difference between talk, or “greenwashing,” and action. When it really comes down to it, it can be a challenge to focus attention, effort and money on the important issues. Of course, the biggest incentive to get things done, particularly in recent years, is to appeal to people’s pockets: if a green strategy will save money, it has to be a no-brainer. So, distilling our 27-point list down to the essentials, here are three fundamental ways to reduce construction costs and help the environment:

Control the size of the building. The most basic green strategy is to reduce waste and excess, to improve efficiency. Be mindful of the size and scope of your building design at all times, and don’t let it grow too big. This will reduce the impact on the land, reduce material quantities, and is by far the best way to bring down costs. Your architect should always be looking at ways to maximize the efficiency of the planning of the building. Cane Garden Bay’s Green VI Glass Studio stands as a testiment to green progress. I never understood why Dorothy chose the grey shades of tornado-addled

Kansas over the opulent magic of the Land of Oz. When she declared, “There’s no place like home” while standing in a fantastical universe in her ruby slippers and wishing to go back to the dust of the rural South, I always thought, ‘No, there are plenty of places like home; there’s no place like Oz!’ But that’s not entirely true; there are enchanted worlds worthy of Oz right here in the Virgin Islands. On a Tuesday afternoon, I whirled across the Technicolor blue sea toward Great Camanoe, and I felt like Dorothy, but instead of being jettisoned between worlds in a tornado-tossed farmhouse, I was comfortably whisked between islands on a 20’ powerboat. I landed at the marvelous Great Camanoe—a private island of 20 homes and few full-time residents only a two-mile boat journey from Beef Island in the unspoiled British Virgin Islands. Soon after docking in the protected enclosed marina, I boarded a sturdy golf cart and followed not a yellow brick road but a narrow black road over the hillside overlooking the marina and shared tennis court then beyond with eastern views I’d never seen before of Marina Cay, Scrub Island, Virgin Gorda, Fallen Jerusalem, Bellamy Cay and Beef Island.

insight and revelations. Coral Beauty harnesses the power of these architectural features to their fullest potential. Every window and door has been carefully considered for its size, shape, functionality, material, beauty and wow-factor. Arched windows in the master suite mimic the arched doorway to the shower and the roundness of the turret shower. Many of the windows and doors in the home feature tilt-andturn technology which again allows the level of breeze to be adjusted. In the master bedroom, an oversized window frames the stunning view beside a tilt-and-turn door which opens to the overhanging balcony. The downstairs guest shower, adjacent to the lower-level guest bedroom, includes what is doubtlessly the most stunning shower view I’ve ever seen in the Virgin Islands with an arched window between the shower head and the faucet handle—giving an optical illusion that adds to the magic of the home.

This is an underwater Emerald City— the epitome of radiance—an even more magnificent world within the fantastic paradise. Water temperatures range from 75 to 80 degrees—the perfect temperature to allow for prolonged swimming or snorkeling sessions. A stone path led me back to the main house then through the gardens to a separate guest house nestled in the canopy with its own riveting vistas. Only a few beaches in the BVI, with the exception of Anegada, show such drastic changes over time as Josiah’s Bay.

Using this same technique, extensive research on coastal change over time in the BVI has revealed a few facts. First, vegetation on beaches has actually advanced seaward where little to no development has occurred. This greatly improves a beach’s resiliency to future storms, swell and sea level rise. Second, wide swaths of vegetation between farmland and the beach seen on older aerial photos indicate a local tradition not commonly practiced today. Land was naturally “buffered” from the sea by vegetation, today it is removed for more space on the beach. Third, despite 12 hurricanes which have passed the BVI within 100km since

1953 (3 of which passed directly over the BVI); beaches that have not been mined eventually recover, even though it may take a few years. This is because storms can move sand offshore until favourable wind and waves bring the sand back. However, there is only a limited supply of sand and if it has been physically removed out of this complex system, the beach may never recover. Only a few beaches in the BVI, with the exception of Anegada, show such drastic changes over time as Josiah’s Bay. Comparing the gain or loss of vegetation on other beaches along the north shore of Tortola, this particular beach has shown the greatest loss of both sand and vegetation. Pictures are worth a thousand words, so it doesn’t take a scientist to see how this resource has changed over the years. But how much has the dramatic loss of both vegetation and sand from this particular beach affected tourism today? For some people, probably not by much since no major hotels exist on this particular beach, and strong wave conditions deter large number of visitors. Sand mined from this beach may have even been used to build the very hotels and villas our visitors stay. But for the property owners in Josiah’s Bay or even the small number of leatherbacks that nest on Josiah’s, the loss of this resource means a loss of property and loss of biodiversity. It’s one of many beaches but maybe this is the first clear indicator that we are putting more into tourism than protecting our products, the same products that provided us with the wealth we have today. The Artistic Ambassador Story and photos by Dan O’Connor

Joseph Hodge considers himself not only an artisan, but also an ambassador—an ambassador of the Virgin Islands’ past and present. His realistic paintings depict a life full of culture and community; his abstract pieces reveal a gateway into emotional interpretation. Through his medium, he believes he preserves history.

a life’s work to pass along the sound values and morals of the past. He told me this story as we sat surrounded by artistic outpourings within his workshop at his Crafts Alive cottage in Road Town. His finished work decorates the walls, and his half-finished work engulfs much of the remaining floor space. As an early teen, in 1968, he sold his first painting for $25. The piece, he said, represented the timeless landscape along Virgin Gorda’s dramatic coastline.

“The BVI was country then,” he explained. “The capital was a few families, and the market was vibrant—the donkeys, the mules, the smell—it was all congested in one small area in front of the Post Office. But most of Tortola was country, and we depended on the land for what we needed.” The painter’s eyes lit up as he spoke, offering

a glimpse into the powerful influences guiding his creativity. History, he explained, compels him to push forward with his work. Hodge pointed to previous projects that help to fuel his interest in the history. In 1978, Hodge traveled to Jamaica to embark on a historical documentary on the lives of Jamaican Maroons, descendants of former runaway slaves who continue to live in colonies among each other. “I even lived among them for a short time,” he said. “It’s a very rich culture that we lost in the colonies—to see how they emerged in the modern world and maintained their culture, it’s just amazing.” Now,

An Uninvited Guest

Slides into the Virgin Islands

By Clive Petrovic On a bright and sunny morning a quarter century ago, workers began unloading cargo from a ship docked at the Sub-Base container port in St Thomas. Quietly and unnoticed, a small red and orange snake slithered out of the stacks of lumber and disappeared into the bushes of its new-found home. Thus, another exotic animal became established in the Virgin Islands. Above: The coiled corn snake.

While we can’t be certain it happened exactly like this, we do know that the new snake was first noticed about 1990 in the SubBase vicinity. When captured, it was identified as a corn snake, also known as the red rat snake. Native to Florida and the southeastern United States, they prefer woods, brushy fields and old buildings where they can search for their favorite prey, rats. That behavior makes them an ideal candidate for a stowaway on a ship. As most snakes, these little fellows are not only harmless—they are very beneficial. In fact, they are called corn snakes because farmers often see them around stored grain and corn where they hunt rats and mice. Corn snakes are colorful and easily identified by the orange and reddish blotches on the back. The colors can vary quite a bit from pale orange to dark browns to almost black. Such attractive colors, combined with a docile disposition and an average size of only four to five feet, have made them popular in the pet trade. Since they adapt well to captivity and are easy to breed, hobbyists now produce several colorful varieties.

don’t know what affect these animals will have on our wildlife and our fragile island ecosystems. As small, tropical islands, the Virgins possess a climate and environment that is ideal for the establishment of exotic wildlife. Our plants and animals have spent millennia adapting to each other and to the physical environment. It’s a delicate balance and one that is easily disturbed. The same is true of small tropical islands throughout the world. There are plenty of stories about introductions that have gone horribly wrong. Exotic animals can wreak havoc on native species. The rat and mongoose are perfect examples of such destructive critters. The simple fact is that we just don’t know what the corn snake may do once established.

Upon entry, guests are asked to donate a dollar, or buy a bottle of rum ($10-25), to hear one of the Callwoods, or resident guide Kervin Joseph, revisit the story of the distillery’s past. “My name’s Kervin, the one who makes the rum, sells the rum, and drinks the rum,” the 10-year employee said, speaking to a crowded room of about 10 tourists. The process of distilling the rum, he explained, starts with inserting cut cane into the pressing mill, where the juice is extracted. From there, the juice flows through receivers into coppers,

The timeless rum distillery has become an iconic fixture within Cane Garden Bay for both tourists and residents alike. The rum is sold exclusively through British Virgin Islands vendors as a definitive local product. The Callwoods purchased the distillery from the Arundel’s more than 200 years ago, and the company has remained family owned and operated since. Fourth-generation owner Michael Callwood has fond memories growing up and helping his father and grandfather in the cane fields and at the still. “Growing up, it was what I knew to do through high school,” he said as he sat on the familiar stoop outside the distillery’s entrance. “Now I’m 58, and I can pass that work down to my family—I would hope, but you never know with young people these days.” Today, Michael’s children, Melanie, 18, and Michael, Jr, 19, both work at the distillery. They both voiced their interest in attending school and traveling, but have plans to keep the distillery operating under the Callwood name. Callwood distillery, after more than 300 years of beachfront operation, doesn’t appear to be going anywhere fast. Its seemingly archaic equipment and rustic setting only add to the allure and richen the quaint community. In the BVI, a place where ruins often crumble and go overlooked, it’s encouraging to see a family such as the Callwoods holding culture and tradition close, all in the name of smooth, cane rum. PY

Flat as an Anegada Pancake By Susie Younkle

Shortly after my husband Matt and I moved to the British Virgin Islands, we were excited for our first trip to Anegada for a fishing tournament. Though we had made Tortola our home base, we were committed to exploring all the islands. Anegada was at the top of our list of destinations, due to its endless beaches, top-notch fishing and reputation for friendly residents. We were also intrigued by Anegada’s geography. Unlike the other mountainous volcanic islands comprising the

From the

Underwater Lens A reef octopus caught in mid expulsion.

The following is an excerpt from the book, How to Take Stunning Underwater Photos Using Inexpensive Point and Shoot Cameras, by Scott Fratcher.

Stop the Action A camera can capture a moment where incredible displays can be witnessed. In the photo above an octopus is in the midst of a color change. Note his tentacles are still blue next to surrounding blue coral while his head has changed color to match the sandy background. In a nutshell, our goal in underwater photography is to present the unseen image. Watch your subject and try to take a photo the moment they change direction, or action. A predator turning to strike, or a fish on his turn of retreat, or a lobster in full swim mode all have the potential to stop the action for an amazing photo. TIP: Set up the camera to sport mode for short shutter speeds. Look for octopus from noon to three when they are found working the reefs and rocks in search of food. Keep an eye for the pumping action of the breathing tube to identify a camouflaged octopus sitting in the rocks.

Learning to Use Macro Many amazing underwater photos are taken in the extreme close up. This setting on the camera is called macro. The standard digital camera lens will focus to about a half meter. To focus closer, to say 100mm, switch the camera to macro mode, and to focus to 10mm use super macro mode. TIP: Learn to change this mode without looking at the camera. For example, my Olympus Stylus Tough needs the action button pushed three times, then right once. By knowing this sequence, I’m able to quickly change camera modes so I can take the progressive close up photos. Close-up photos reveal detail snorkelers would never normally see even if they were diving on the spot themselves. Through photography one can instantly see how a remora attaches itself to a whale. Royal

A Christening By Alison Knights Bramble The announcement of a pending royal visit is one of mixed emotions, especially if it is not your first one. Having been officially opened in 2005 by HRH Princess Anne, we had a fair idea of what was in store for us at the BVI Watersports Centre. This time, HRH The Duke of Gloucester was planning to spend time with us to see one specific aspect of our programme—Sailability BVI. Once the planning began for the Duke’s visit, we decided not just to leave him on the dock but to take him afloat where he could get up close and personal with the young sailors. In welcoming HRH The Princess Royal into our Centre seven years ago, we learned that the royal family would prefer to be a part of the action rather than standing stiffly to attention listening to speeches

Laser Bugs are fun, easy, adaptable, plastic, reefable, fit for two or three small sailors and have accessories. The accessories make them playful and manageable—taking a lot of the element of intimidation out of sailing. Bugs come equipped with drink holders, oars and wheels built in. Also hidden in the transom are sliding handles that pop out when you want to push your Bug up the dock, just like a wheelbarrow. We certainly appreciated having HRH The Duke of Gloucester visit the BVI Watersports Centre to show his support of what we do and to help us in christening our new boats which will continue to ensure sailing for all in the British Virgin Islands.
