Still Sailing As Premier and Minister for Tourism, it is my great pleasure to welcome you our yachting sector partners; charter yacht brokers, yacht owners and crews to the British Virgin Islands. We are pleased that you have chosen to visit the Territory at this time, to participate in the 36th Annual Charter Yacht Society Boat Show. You would all be aware of the significant impact that the recent passage of Hurricane Irma has had on the Territory. No sector was left untouched and indeed our marine sector was affected in an unprecedented manner. Yet, despite the impacts and the new land and seascapes, the resiliency of the residents and businesses in the Territory is on full display. In fact, the staging of this, the first major tourism event since the passage of that hurricane epitomizes that ne’er say die spirit and is a fitting launch for our 2017/2018 tourism season. Your presence here demonstrates an undying loyalty and commitment to the British Virgin Islands, the Sailing capital of the World and for this, we are eternally grateful. Through your efforts and those of all our tourism industry partners, we will let the world know that the BVI is open for business and have charted our course for recovery. My Government remains committed to the yachting sector and work is ongoing to restore and improve our product for our guests to have the best experience possible. In fact, quite early in the aftermath of Irma, my Government identified the yachting sector as key to jumpstarting economic activity in the tourism industry throughout the Territory. The importance of the economic activity generated by our yachting guests as they sail around our magnificent archipelago from Anegada to Jost Van Dyke visiting our famous anchorages and patronising our many iconic bars and restaurants, cannot be understated. New and long-time guests are welcome to relax and cruise our islands and cays and if they wish to engage in voluntourism, there are many opportunities to do so as the Territory continues to rebuild. Contact our team at the BVI Tourist Board for information on such voluntourism opportunities and for general information and updates visit their website: www.bvitourism.com. Join the team at the BVI Tourist Board which is hard at work spreading the message worldwide that the BVI is open for Tourism from November, 2017 and indeed we are Still Sailing! Dr. D. “SHARE OUR WORLD” AWARD
It is easy to “drift away” from reality when your livelihood is based on, in and under the sea. Occassionally, we hear about a bridge being built between the land and marine communities. A yacht is used for a Make-a-Wish recipient, a school class is invited on a day sail, relief supplies are delivered to a remote island. For a moment in time, two worlds come together. In 2017, Addison Yacht Charters will present the first annual award at the CYS Show to the crew who have gone the extra mile to “share our world” in the previous twelve months. We will be looking for nominees for 2018. You can either put someone else’s name forward or submit your own with a paragraph detailing the interaction. Submission deadline October 1, 2018 to the CYS office info@ bvicrewedyachts.com. Nominees should be CYS members.
