When driving up the private road approaching the property, the fuchsia bougainvillea flowers distinctively paint the gated entrance to Taino along its driveway. The house is secluded behind meticulously landscaped gardens, with Christmas palms, zora, and award-winning hibiscus flowers, accompanied by papaya, mango, and lime trees. The island-inspired home sits behind a spacious deck area, with a 40” x 11” infinity pool, overlooking the astonishing views of the neighbouring islands. The open architectural layout which was designed by the owners from inspiration gained upon their international travels, enables a cool breeze to travel gently throughout the house and covered, open-aired living area. An eclectic mix of furniture—including wicker sofas and hanging basket chairs— provide a comfortable space to relax. Inside the building’s concrete exterior, colourful walls embrace the sun as it filters into the indoor dining area, separated by an archway window opening to a fully equipped kitchen with modern appliances. Al-fresco dining on the porch provides views of Tortola’s West End from Carrot Bay to Cane Garden Bay, and is best enjoyed with delicious barbecued cuisine, prepared on the Weber gas grill. Within the house is a cosy library with a unique collection of books, artefacts, and games, and a flat screen TV equipped with a full selection of cable channels. Accommodating up to six guests, Taino has three bedrooms, each with a spacious en suite bathroom. The two guest suites within the main house contain queen beds, and a master suite is located in a quaint detached pavilion across the outside patio, with a large, four-poster king size bed.

A good resort receives repeat business by accomplishing three features brilliantly with the sole purpose of creating escapism – a task synonymous with promoting the relaxation of mind and body. In achieving the three key allures intrinsic to resort advertisement, success will be relished; however, a memorable retreat is obliged to exceed the standards set by a successful tropical haven and deliver enigmatic wonder, creating loyal patronage repeatedly returning for years. The British Virgin Islands is a renowned sailor’s
paradise for its prime, predictable sailing conditions, which is why the country is the frequent host of many competitive regattas each year. Oyster Regatta returned to the BVI for its 6th time to host their 35th annual spring Caribbean event. However, unlike the majority of sailing races which place a strong emphasis on the competitive aspect of the sport, these exclusive regattas focus on the social bonding experiences shared between owners of luxurious Oyster yachts. The Oyster Regatta takes place twice a year, situated in a Caribbean location in the spring, and in the Mediterranean in autumn. They are designed to be social experiences, exclusive to members of the ‘Oyster Family,’ to showcase their prized possessions, and meet and build strong relationships based around their mutual interest: the ownership of a beautiful Oyster. Oyster, he has tweaked the classic design to improve areas of functionality and comfort based on his pre-existing expertise of the industry. “A lot of thinking goes around the social uses of the boat when we begin designing an Oyster,” said David. “The design is not created with high-tech sails or racing specifics, but rather, unique features to maximise modern essentials and comfort.” The Oyster’s naval architecture is created to withstand harsh weather conditions while cruising along the oceans of the world. “In many ways we are like a Bentley SUV…classy, quality, but tough,” David commented. The introduction of their signature ‘tear drop window,’ wrapping around the saloon space allows travellers to experience the extraordinary views when relaxing inside the boat. Oysters are built with the owners in mind and how they will co-inhabit with their crew, and as such are designed in a way to allow privacy and separation if they prefer. To adhere to this ethos of comfort, and recognising that Oyster owners enjoy passage making voyages, the boats feature the master cabin at the back rather than the front. Oyster owners enjoy coming to the BVI because it offers the chance for the race to take place in multiple locations on different islands, rather than beginning and concluding at the same base each day. Because Oyster places a strong emphasis on the social experience of the regatta, exclusive events took place each evening, including a prize giving, dinner, and party on each of the three visited islands. Day one began at Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola, where the owners registered, enjoying a cocktail party and buffet dinner at Peg Leg’s restaurant. On the first race day, the fleet travelled to Norman Island, where participants dressed up for a pirate-themed party at the Pirates Bight Restaurant. The final three days of the regatta took place around Virgin Gorda, where the Oyster Family raced for two days and spent one ‘lay day’ relaxing at luxury accommodations in the North Sound, including Bitter End Yacht Club, Oil Nut Bay, and the prestigious, state-of-the-art superyacht marina, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS).
“What I love about our regattas in the BVI is that we get to sail from place to place in some of the best, predictable sailing conditions in the world,” David added. Recently, Oyster launched the start of a new venture for their customers by implementing the World Rally, with its inauguration in 2013. During this rally, 100 people came together on 25 boats for a 15 month global expedition, congregating at organised locations to partake in social bonding events. Oyster’s next World Rally is set to take place beginning in 2017 and ending in 2019. In addition to luxury yacht builders, the company also sells secondhand yachts through Oyster Brokerage, a dedicated team of experts with an extensive database of technical documents and photographs to match prospective owners to their perfect, previously owned Oyster. Roasted SanMarzano Tomato Soup
Competing for my love of food is my love of words. There are some words out there, much like foods, that tend to be innately loved, and others that require time and experience to appreciate. The phrase, ‘variety is the spice of life,’ describes a taste of the big, beautiful world we live in that allows for us to learn and adapt our individual preferences in every potential aspect of life. For me, one of those foods – the kind I definitely did not appreciate – was the humble tomato. I grew up well into my twenties thinking they were bitter and odd in texture. Then, I met Captain Ernie, who (as I’m sure you know) is my husband. Ernie has a deep love for tomatoes, and opened my eyes to the great, big, multi-coloured world of the many delicious varieties. Provisioning is my favourite part of the week – the possibilities are endless. One of my favourite finds is a variety of tomatoes – Campari, Kumato, Cherry, Grape… yellow, brown, purple, red…and then there are

San Marzanos. Oblong in shape, they are firm, juicy, sweet, and aromatic. These are my preferred tomatoes to use to make my homemade tomato soup. Back to my love of words. One evening, I had decided to make my Roasted San Marzano Tomato Soup for a charter of four couples, all celebrating their 70th birthdays. The soup was served as our first course and as I was plating the entrée, our stewardess came in and said the guests wanted to speak with me. A particularly boisterous, theatrical gentleman said very calmly, “That soup was ambrosia.” Here’s where it all comes together: on one of my refrigerators I have a collection of random words that I’ve learned and fell in love with. One of them is ‘ambrosia’ – in ancient Greek mythology, this word is defined as the food or drink of the Greek Gods. There couldn’t be a better compliment.

Ingredients
In a large saucepan, heat beef broth. Transfer roasted tomatoes to broth and let cook at simmer for 20 minutes. Deglaze the baking sheet with a splash of water to keep all the good flavours. Add in a handful of fresh basil and puree soup with immersion blender. Salt and pepper to taste. Ladle hot (or chilled) soup into your bowl of choice, garnishing with fresh basil and fresh-cracked black pepper. I highly recommend serving alongside a fresh-baked loaf of ciabatta bread.

urricane season in the BVI runs from June 1 to November 30, hitting its peak between August and early October. Whether you choose to be on island during hurricane season or not, there is a lot you need to know in order to adequately prepare in case a storm hits. Knowing the proper storage procedures for your yacht is crucial in order to prevent or minimise damage to the vessel during the harsh weather conditions, which generally include high winds, sea swells, and heavy rainfall. Thankfully, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has shared their extensive knowledge and experience with VIPY in disaster preparedness, specifically to the yachting industry:
What does the 2015 hurricane season predict for the BVI? The revised predictions for the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season which were issued in April indicate that this year will be “one of the least active seasons since the middle of the 21st century.� The forecasters are predicting three hurricanes and seven named storms. One of the three forecasted hurricanes is expected to be major. The number of hurricane alerts issued by the DDM will be determined by the number of systems that pose a threat to the Territory and the duration of that threat.

Which are the best marine shelters and where are they located in the BVI? Over the years, a detailed assessment of the vulnerability of marine shelters was undertaken and based on this assessment, a recommended listing has been documented and made available for public use. Many of these lie in sheltered harbours and in areas protected by reefs and mangroves. The list of land-based and marine shelters are available on the DDM website - www.bviddm.com
What options do boat owners have in order to prepare their boat for hurricane season? Boat owners have to have a plan in place from the beginning of each new year. Insurance policies require that owners have a hurricane plan in place and submit official documentation stating where their boat will be during the hurricane season. There are three main options for those who choose to not remain with their boat in the BVI:
• Vacate the area with the vessel prior to the start of the season • Have the yacht hauled out of the waters and stored • Obtain a ‘hurricane slip’ from a marina, so when there is a hurricane, the staff will go into the slip and prepare the boat Information provided by Sam Welch, Chairman, Marine Association of the BVI
What are the correct procedures for securing a vessel within a marina? • Secure the engines • Take down the sails and tie them up, or remove them altogether • Take all deck gear including life boards, life rings, and patch boards

This is the story of a locally built schooner and her abrupt, dramatic end. The Catherine was a beautiful trading schooner built of wood in Road Town by expert shipwright Leopold Smith. Leopold was the son of the prolific West End boat builder Daniel Smith and father to Ira Smith founder of today’s Smith’s Ferry Services. The Catherine was launched on April 12, 1949 from the ghut in McNamara where the Lion’s Club Park is now located. She was 63ft in length and an outstanding example of the talents and expertise of her builder. Leopold built her for his own use and owned her with two other partners. She was active in local trading for five years and then sold to Robinson O’Neal of Virgin Gorda. Robinson O’Neal added an engine and renamed her Maris. As the Maris, she continued to ply the waters of the Virgin Islands making regular trips from Virgin Gorda to St. Thomas, San Juan, Puerto Rico and back. It was on one of these trips to Puerto Rico, that she met an untimely end five years later. It had been a routine passage from Virgin Gorda to San Juan and the Maris docked at pier 5. She reached in the evening and after a quiet night, spent the whole of the next day unloading and loading cargo. The crew consisted of the Captain Winston O’Neal, brother to owner Robinson, a first mate, engineer, and five crew. There were also two other passengers—a man from Anegada and another from St. Thomas—bringing the total to 10 people. After unloading the various items brought from Virgin Gorda, the crew began loading the supplies for the trip back. The majority of the return cargo consisted of over 150 large propane tanks full of gas. As the crewmen struggled to place this heavy burden aboard, the engineer worked with a local mechanic who was making some repairs to the diesel engine. Captain Winston O’Neal was at the far end of the dock conferring with his brother, owner Robinson, who had piloted a small plane from his headquarters in St. Thomas to San Juan to meet the boat, as was his habit. The two passengers had been shopping and were bringing their personal items aboard. Now the crew consisted of five young men from Virgin Gorda. They were all around 19 years old and were under the supervision of the first mate, who was older—well into his 20’s—and a native of Anguilla. As the last of the gas bottles were being placed on board, the young crew members expressed their concern with how they were being stored. It seems that many of them were stacked in a horizontal position, instead of upright and some actually had the top with the regulator leaning down.
When they complained to the First Mate, saying that they thought they could smell gas, the bottles were put down and the crew were reminded that they had stacked bottles this way many times before: “What’s wrong with you all? Are you afraid of death?” was the remark made. With that said, the matter was closed and everyone continued to prepare the vessel to leave port. It was 3pm on Friday January 9, 1959. The local mechanic had left and the ships engineer was below, ready to start the engine. The crew and passengers were situated in various places on deck and one was on the dock to throw off the mooring lines. ‘Robbie’ O’Neal and his brother Captain Winston were finishing up business at the far end of the pier. When the local mechanic began working on the engine earlier in the day he had disconnected the battery cables. These were reconnected when he finished, but in his haste to leave, he had not tightened them properly. As the Engineer turned on the ignition key, the loose battery cable was made to arc which created a spark and an incredible explosion which lifted the deck in one piece into the air while forcing the hull underwater. Windows were broken across the bay in office buildings in San Juan and Carolina and the sound of the explosion was heard as far as 35 miles away. Incredibly, there was only one fatality. It was that of the First Mate who had admonished the younger men for being afraid. Every other crew member sustained injury for which they bear the scars today except two, the Captain and the crewman who were on the dock. The engineer was burned badly and marked for life. The others were mostly blown into the air and either landed on the dock or in the water. They received broken feet, legs, and arms and many still limp from the injury. For most of the injured, it meant almost a year in the hospital recovering and in some cases longer. They began their recovery in San Juan and then transferred to St. Thomas before returning to their homes in Virgin Gorda. For some, it took years before they returned to a life working at sea. For one, he never returned and stayed employed on land and to this day will not allow propane to be used in his home. The strangest thing is the fate of the engineer, for as the others were left with physical evidence of their ordeal, he was thrown straight up into the air and landed back down exactly where he had been sitting with no evidence of a broken bone or injury outside of the fact that he was dead. I will leave it to you to draw your own conclusion as I have related this story as told to me by the survivors – for me, it only reinforces the adage that truth is stranger than fiction. www.bvipropertyyacht.com

How to keep your sterling silver sparkling Madalyn kindly revealed these industry secrets for keeping your jewellery looking its best: • Always wipe your silver jewellery with a soft cloth after wearing it – this removes perspiration and any other elements that can affect the lustre of your jewellery • It is recommended to clean the piece once every few weeks, depending on how often it is worn • The ‘at-home’ remedy for cleaning: Pour a few drops of Dawn Dish Soap (our personal favourite) in a bowl filled with warm water. Get a nice sudsy bath going by stirring the water with an unused toothbrush. Gently scrub the jewellery with the toothbrush, being sure to get inside all the nooks and crannies. Rinse clean with water and gently pat dry with a cotton cloth • Be sure to store all your sterling silver pieces in the specialised pouches that you purchase them in. This will keep the metal from rubbing up against other metals in your jewellery box • Always put your jewellery on last, even after perfume. The nature of natural metals and gemstones can sometimes be affected by the chemicals in lotions and perfumes.

About The Virgin Islands Property & Yacht Readers’ Choice Awards 2015 In 2011, VIPY created the RC awards’ vote and event to commemorate individuals and organisations for their distinctive contribution to the British Virgin Islands community. This is conducted via categories relevant to people, places, and services situated within the BVI. The voting is concluded with an award ceremony congratulating winners with the highest reader appreciation and the finale is held in October of every year. The event participation has expanded considerably since the event’s inception and the competition has intensified. For 2015, we have condensed the quantity of categories merging certain sections together for a broader number of businesses to become involved.
