Provokes Poetry in Motion

Famed 19th century poet John Keats masterfully described the beauties of nature and wonders of life through a visual and metaphorical perspective. To illustrate the quest for eternal happiness and search for magnificent beauty, Keats used the Greek mythological character Endymion in his poem of the same name. In the poem, Endymion is left teased and tormented atop Mount Olympus by the moon goddess Selene—her magnificent beauty left as a lingering vision. Following her departure, he would forever yearn to find an eternal dream state—one where he could eternally hold on to Selene’s unmatched beauty.

As we walk in, my eyes dilate. “Now this is the ‘Wow’ moment,” Maritha told me. “I’ve yet to have anyone come in here and not say ‘Wow’.” In front of me, a quaint dining room unfolds into a lower-level living room, which explodes into a breathtaking panoramic view of the islands. Beyond the living room, the patio boasts a lap pool that seems to fall off into separate levels that, at any given vantage point, bear witness to views extending from St John’s lush hillsides, across the entirety of Sir Francis Drake Channel, and clear to Great Dog’s rough and rocky coastline. I stop to gawk and can’t help but say to myself, “Wow.” Facing east, the view takes in some of the most breathtaking sunrises on Earth, Maritha explained. On the other side of the astounding panoramic view, we venture back to the 2,500 square-foot residence, and continue on to the four terraced, private

The estate embodies a Feng Shui design, allowing for the multiple levels to provide for intimate privacy, yet also providing potential for parties and gatherings among the villa’s converging centre point. Overlooking the property in a separate building, the master retreat features an office, bar, living and bathroom area, walkin-shower and floor to ceiling patio doors, which open to yet another private patio. “A perfect executive retreat,” Maritha explained. Indeed, the former owner (and former president of a major US television network) reveled in the property’s ability to act as a private sanctuary, an executive retreat, and a funfilled getaway for colleagues and friends. “I had [Endymion] for 29 years, and for those years, I traveled around and saw a lot of properties—beautiful properties,” he told me. “But I’ll say it again, Endymion really got inside my soul—it sounds corny, but it did. Those views, those beautiful views, really knock you out.” To the current owners and the agent charged with selling Endymion to its next lucky proprietor, the estate will always remain a memory of beauty—one that inspires poetry.

Because this transition will not occur instantly the BVIEC will be able to monitor the transition and contribution of renewable energy. As far as my sailing lessons go, I learned about barber hauling and a few racing rules. Adrian was a cool-headed skipper, only yelling once when we were being edged into the rocks by another boat that wouldn’t give way. “This is my house,” he shouted. So now I think I want a house that races, too. Maybe by next year’s Spring Regatta…

The Saga of Saving the
Old Government House

The Old Government House stands strong in Road Town.
How the historic house was saved from demolition In 1996, then-Governor David Mackilligin’s wife refused to live in their dilapidated house any longer. The roofs leaked, termites were everywhere, the plumbing and electricity were shot, cracks were appearing in many walls—so the governor and his wife were moved to temporary quarters on Beef Island. Built in 1926 around the hurricane-damaged building of 1890, Government House had definitely fallen into disrepair. The building was condemned by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the overseas government agency responsible for housing our governor and his family. The old house was scheduled to be demolished and plans were drawn up for a modern replacement to be built on the same site in Road Town. This caused dismay and horror among many, and the governor’s wife started a movement called The Friends of Old Government House to try and save the old building. They wrote letters, had meetings, got the local papers to write editorials, and drew up alternate plans—but all to no avail. The FCO would not budge, and the BVI Government was reluctant to consider alternatives. But, several events would happen in 1998 and 1999, leading to the building being rescued from its looming destruction. A meeting in San Juan of the 8th International Conference of National Trusts sent to all concerned a resolution that “unanimously expressed its concern at the loss of another architectural gem of the Caribbean.” The FCO replied, determining the building “unsafe” and suggesting its demolition and rebuilding as the “best value-for-money” option available. No mention or consideration had been given to saving the old building and erecting a new government house elsewhere on the site. Next, a pretty devastating article was printed in the London Times. Above a lovely colour photograph of the building was the headline, “£650,000 ‘monstrosity’ will replace attractive old Government House.” This savage article was instigated by Marcia Brocklebank, whose www.bvipy.com

I first visited St Martin a year-and-a-half ago, with a group of 12 rowdy friends hell-bent on tearing up the town for a birthday celebration—and tear it up we did. The 34-squaremile island is great for romping around on a celebratory booze cruise, shopping spree or for fine-food binging—especially with a gang of friends or a hot date. But for my most recent trip I traveled alone, as a one-man wolf pack. However, I inevitably came out on top, thanks to an adventurous sense of curiosity and a full tank of gas.

Although I wanted to stop and shop, the busy scene was a bit overwhelming during the mid-day Saturday hustle. I detoured to nearby Pic du Paradis—the tallest point on St Martin at 1,400 feet—where I found Loterie Farm, an eco-tourism playground of sorts that crowns the mountain’s lush peak. There, adventure seekers are provided with 135 acres of trails for hiking, and treetop adventure obstacle courses fashioned with zip lines, ladder runs and climbing apparatus. Operations Manager Pierre Lenoci showed me around the lush property, which is home to exotic vegetation and wildlife, and—most importantly—monkeys! I watched in awe as participants on the “extreme fly zone” course trekked through the physically enduring obstacles, zipping from tree to tree. Although I'm embarrassingly out of shape, Pierre said I would do fine along the course if I wanted a go at it—and I did. However, being a Tortola resident and beach bum, I only packed sandals. Of course, the obstacle course required gym shoes. I left the fascinating eco-playground with my head hung low but eager for the next adventure, which took me further down the coast of the French side.

I sure did try. I rounded off my evening with a satisfying steak burger from Burger King, before getting lost on the way back to the hotel. From there, I took a nap and then headed over to Club Bliss, a Miami-style beach bar that packs with the prettiest of locals and tourists looking to tear up the dance floor. I had a couple of drinks and mingled a bit, but the haughty scene was a bit much without a pack of friends close by. I hit a casino on the way back to the hotel, throwing away a few twenties at the blackjack table, before packing in for the night. The next day, I relaxed by the beach—the clothing-encouraged beach of Maho—before making the short trip to the airport. I lay back on the soft sand and floated in the blue sea, listening to the roar of the jets fly closely overhead. I could see the draw to the popular tourist attraction. It was a relaxing finish to a short but sweet solo trip to St Martin—one I’ll surely do again. Next time, I think I’ll charter a flight with BVI Airways, and pack the plane with, say, a dozen or so of my rowdiest friends.

The mainstay treatment has largely remained supportive care, but some swear by local remedies they say have helped to fend off the poison’s nasty side affects—even if some medical experts chuck these claims into a placebo basket. Pickering trusts bush remedies, or those concocted generations ago through the use of local flora. After having his boots knocked off and recognizing that he’d likely been poisoned by a virgin snapper he’d eaten for lunch, the Conservation and Fisheries officer resorted to a bush tea comprised largely of Buttonwood mangrove leaves and roots. Within six hours, he said he was cured. Pickering said most avid fish-eaters he knows, who have lived here for many years, have been poisoned, and most resort to similar remedies passed down through generations. “We love fish here,” Pickering reiterated. “So it’s easy to get poisoned after awhile.” Across the Virgin Islands, it would appear that word-of-mouth among fishermen has remained the extent of ciguatera poisoning detection— until now. In the BVI, the Department of Conservation and Fisheries is appealing to the fishing public to pick up a free ciguatera testing kit at The BVI Fishing Complex. The kit allows for fishermen to test the fish cells through a series of chemical-based tests, which, hours later, provide a result. However, the results are not guaranteed. I recently asked Tyler Smith, a coral reef researcher and professor at the University of the Virgin Islands, how the USVI is monitoring the situation. Currently, the University is working on a project funded by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, along with the Food and Drug Administration, to look specifically at environmental and human health issues associated with ciguatera fish poisoning in the USVI. The project, he said, is currently ongoing and focuses on climate modelling and environmental sampling linked to actual cases of ciguatera fish poisoning in St Thomas. They monitor seasonal fluctuations of the poison on the coral reefs on four sites on the south side of St Thomas—an area where ciguatera is most prevalent. Furthermore, they conduct interviews with patients afflicted with ciguatera poisoning and monitor the behaviour in varying cases. “All of this information could, down the road, lead to better management of ciguatera fish poisoning in the USVI and ideally would lead to reduced cases,” the researcher said. Continuing, he said that conventional tests and treatments still do not provide ideal results. To be safe, a fish consumer must ultimately trust his supplier, he concluded. “The best safety for consumers at the present time is to avoid fish species and areas known to contain ciguatoxins,” he said, “or rely on fishermen who have deep knowledge of ciguatera fish poisoning and are very interested in providing safe food to their customers.”

Furnishing for a Cause
When the crew at Cooper Island Beach Club thinks renovation, they first think about the environment. The resort has set its sights high on becoming entirely dependent on alternative sources of energy, while upholding high sustainability standards in every facet of their work. So when Arawak’s Roy Keegan presented them with a furniture line that promotes both community growth and environmental regeneration, they jumped on the opportunity to invest in the cause.
On Roy’s most recent venture to Indonesia, he was introduced to a company working through a nonprofit foundation called Trees4Trees. The programme empowers local Indonesian communities to thrive on an innovative and burgeoning furniture business that has forged partnerships with responsible local furniture manufacturers and their customers, like Arawak. The foundation distributes free seedlings of high value species, including teak, mahogany and mango, to local farmers and resident landowners in impoverished areas of Indonesia. In turn, community members are taught to farm

and manufacture fine furniture pieces later sold all over the world—like here in the BVI, exclusively at Arawak. Also, the organisation uses entirely reclaimed wood—and every time a piece of furniture is sold, the foundation plants another tree among its fields. I sat in one of five newly renovated rooms at Cooper Island Resort, where I spoke with Manager Sam Baker about her choice to choose Arawak to helm their remodeling project, which aims to refurbish the entire resort—ten rooms total. “Simple,” she responded. “The Trees4Trees organization just fits with the philosophy of Cooper Island. … Meeting with Roy on this was simply a meeting of the minds.” Arawak provided Sam with solid teak bedframes, dressers, nightstands and daybeds, stained in what Roy described as a “Tobacco colour, like a nice piece of driftwood washed up on the beach that has been weathered by the elements into a nice silver-grey weathered look.”
The tough, refurbished wood will stand the tests of time and mature well to fit in with its beachside surroundings, while standing up nature’s wrath, Roy explained. Eventually, the “functional” wood, as he described it, would age into a ripe colour and texture only achieved through time, like the reclaimed wood he also used to deck out the beach club’s restaurant and bar.
“It blends in with what people are looking for—a beachside look,” Sam agreed. “So we had [the wood] stained to give it that feel—and can’t wait to see where it goes from there.” Sam took me over to have a look at a room—built and furnished in the early 90s—that hadn’t yet been reconstructed or refurbished by Arawak to match the simple and refreshing design to which I had first been introduced. The bright whites and common Caribbean pinks were in stark contrast to the smooth and subtle teaks and natural linens representing the new image of the resort. It’s a transformation Sam said she could be proud of, “Because now I show people around and get loud ‘Wows!’ instead of “OK, this is nice’.” Sam said she looks forward to watching as the furniture shows signs of uniquely weathering with the elements that only a warm Caribbean sun and wet tropical rains can provide.

I’ve been called a know-it-all before. And while I’m sure it’s not intended as so, I take it as a compliment. During many a Friday night quiz at the Tamarind Club, our team has argued over a question’s correct answer, and I’ve found the trick to convincing the others that my answer is right is by having a backup source at the ready. Well, my new backup source for sailing expertise is Rob Swain, and it doesn’t hurt that he has a sailing school named after him. Now, I’m dying for a sailing-related question at quiz night, so I can bust out, “I learned that from Rob Swain, as in Rob Swain Sailing School. You’ve heard of him, right?”

Peanut butter: Use for sandwiches, of course, or as a sauce for noodles. Try almond butter for a change. Canned beans: One of the healthiest pantry staples, beans can be used for soups, salads and vegetarian burgers. Canned diced tomatoes: When good-quality fresh tomatoes are tough to find, choose canned tomatoes for pasta sauces and soups. Bisquick: I love to make homemade pancakes and biscuits, but a mix like Bisquick is terrific for boats—especially charter boats—as baked goods can be prepared without purchasing a variety of dry goods such as flour, sugar and baking powder. Pasta and rice: These compact carbs are the base for many different meals or side dishes.
2 tsp peeled, grated fresh ginger ½ tsp crushed red pepper 1 lb linguine or Asian noodles 1 tsp sesame oil Assorted vegetables (optional) In a small saucepan combine first 7 ingredients (peanut butter through red pepper). Simmer for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is slightly thickened and smooth. Cook the noodles until they are al dente, then drain them in a colander. Rinse them under cold water then drain the noodles well. Toss with 1 teaspoon of sesame oil. Transfer the noodles to a large bowl and combine with the peanut sauce, stirring well. Add vegetables if desired. Serve at room temperature.
