North Shore Lookout North Shore Lookout is at the end of a country lane, quite private and secluded, and is on a very large lot, so privacy is guaranteed. The house has split levels: the living/dining area, kitchen and deck are on the ground level and a few steps lead up to the master bedroom; a few steps down lead to the guest room with bathroom and a separate laundry room with a washer/dryer. Most of the furnishings are recycled teak with the exception of the dining table that is made from harvested teak. So far, the main attraction has not been mentioned - the view is spectacular! Looking over the golden sands of Brewer's Bay and across to Anderson Point with Anegada in the distance; the view is to the North and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean lies before you. The beauty of the sunset is stunning without the hot rays of the sun shining directly into the house. The sunrise and soft sound of surf provides a gentle wake-up call in the bedrooms. The house is tiled throughout with Saltillo. The kitchen cabinets are solid wood and the appliances are Viking Professional grade and stainless steel, including the barbecue.

The island is in bloom! This morning, after navigating through my berry-splattered patio and bougainvillea-covered steps, I walked down the Ridge Road toward Great Mountain Road and noticed more blossoms and fruit than I’d seen since I’d moved in to my hilltop room in March. I had to pause and mentally photograph the cinnabar flowers of the flamboyant tree contrasting against the powder blue of the early morning sky. Fallen fruit from mango and papaya trees made me wish I, too, could roll down the hill. This issue of Property Guide takes you out of doors. Yes, it’s hot outside, but it’s also beautiful and fragrant. We’re lucky enough to live in a place where plants bloom year round. Makere House above Cane Garden Bay has several outdoor spaces—decks, patios, a pool and a side yard with a mango tree. The shade beckons. The yard also has that super spongey grass, like the kind outside Pusser’s in town, where you just want to kick off your shoes and wiggle your toes. This is the most colourful time of year for another reason as well—August Festival! The orange, blue, yellow, pink and green flags ripple over Waterfront Drive, enticing us all to look up as we jump up. Property Guide reveals the history of this time of revelry and the symbolic significance of many of the traditions. With Arawak Interiors’ Roy Keegan, Property Guide takes you from the BVI to Bali, another location famous for its bright, tropical exteriors. Roy’s off on his next trip to Indonesia to buy and commission furniture made from the reclaimed timbers of old Balinese structures.

White Bay Pond
Jost van Dyke’s Saline Secrets
by the Jost van Dyke Preservation Society
Many persons visit Jost van Dyke for the beaches and the bars. Others come to enjoy a soak, swim or snorkel in the sea. Fewer visitors pay attention to the seven salt ponds found across Jost van Dyke. Yet these salt ponds are ecological jewels, which hold clues both to the mysteries of the past and keys to solving the environmental challenges of the present.
Cape Wright Pond
8
For example, the sediments found in some salt ponds may be useful in helping scientists understand the impacts of global warming and climate change. Salt pond sediments sometimes hold thousands of years of years of deposits and sediment cores from salt ponds may help scientists understand the sequence of events stretching back as far as the last Ice Age, some 10,000 – 12,000 years ago. Salt ponds are enclosed saline ponds often found near the coastline; they often form a bridge between the open ocean and land. Salt ponds may be of varying sizes and they may be surrounded by vegetation such as mangroves, shrubs, sedges and other coastal vegetation. Salt ponds provide a number of useful ecological functions, some of which are of direct benefit to humans. On Jost van Dyke, salt ponds primarily act as sediment traps for
AUGUST 2009 BVI PROPERTY GUIDE ALOOKINGGLASS PUBLISHING | www.bviguides.com
runoff from surrounding uplands. This helps to reduce the impact of pollution on connected ecosystems, including coral reefs and sea grass beds. Their other primary function is as a habitat for many species of plants and animals. It is not unusual for birds such as herons, stilts, ducks, teals and coots to be observed in and around the salt ponds of Jost van Dyke. Several species of lizards, crab, insects and fish may also be observed. Additionally, up to four species of mangrove may be seen in the salt ponds on Jost van Dyke. These are the Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle), Black Mangrove (Avicennia germinans), White Mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa) and the Buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus).
Most persons would be surprised to know that there are seven distinct salt ponds on Jost van Dyke, and until recently there were eight. The eighth salt pond (which was located south of Beasli Hill along Batson Bay) was converted to the island’s official waste disposal and landfill site and no longer functions as a salt pond. The
Lower Dog Hole Pond
remaining salt ponds, however, represent an opportunity for Jost van Dyke to further develop its ecotourism potential and to protect not only the salt ponds, but the many species of wildlife that may depend on them. A list of the salt ponds and their locations is provided below: • White Bay Pond, located on the southwestern coast of Jost van Dyke • Upper Dog Hole Pond, located on the western side of Great Harbour, to the east of Dandy Point • Lower Dog Hole Pond, located on the western side of Great Harbour Jost van Dyke • Great Harbour Salt Pond, located at Great Harbour on the south coast of Jost van Dyke • Clean Hole Pond, located on the western side of Garner Bay, southeastern end of Jost van Dyke • Cape Wright Pond, located north of Long Bay, northeastern coast of Jost van Dyke • Georgy Hole Bay Pond, located at Georgy Hole Bay, eastern tip of Jost van Dyke
The above listing of salt ponds, along with a classification of the salt ponds, and a
description of the issues and impacts associated with each Salt Pond, is one of the highlights of the Biodiversity Chapter of the draft Environmental Profile for Jost van Dyke. This Profile which is currently being prepared by the Island Resources Foundation on behalf of the Jost van Dykes Preservation Society; is one of the main outputs of Jost van Dykes Preservation Society’s signature environmental project entitled “Jost van Dyke’s Communitybased Programme Advancing Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development.” This project, which is funded by the UK’s Overseas Territories Environment Programme (OTEP) and coordinated by the Jost van Dykes Preservation Society, started in May of 2008 and will continue until December of 2009. Old Wood Inspires New Designs by Traci O'Dea
“If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing beautifully.” —words of a Balinese carver as told to Made Wijaya, author of Architecture of Bali (2002). Reclaimed teak furniture is constructed of wood salvaged from the demolition of old homes, railroads, docks, boats, cattle markets and furniture in Indonesia. Craftsmen in Indonesia then strip and clean the wood and fashion it into contemporary shapes for the Western consumer. “Most of our pieces come from the joglo, or family home. The whole house is built out of wood—columns, support beams. They’re up on stilts, because they’re in paddy fields, and the wood rots out beneath them.” The teak furniture pieces at Arawak Interiors do not attempt to reproduce Balinese designs. “They build for the Western world at our specifications,” Roy Keegan says about the carvers and craftsmen he works with in Indonesia. Arawak Interiors mainly sells two types of reclaimed teak furniture—carved and uncarved.
The uncarved pieces have crisp and contemporary lines that showcase the history of the wood from which they’re made. They’re more subtle than the highly carved pieces, and their beauty lies in the discovery of the story behind each plank of teak. A dining table features a limewash finish that highlights the wood’s grain and gives the piece a rustic look that fits perfectly with Caribbean interiors. Unlike the young, immature teak wood that caused controversy in the nineties, the reclaimed teak comes from old houses and old trees. Some of the structures from which the wood was obtained are hundreds of years old. The wood is solid, thick and sturdy, beautiful and full of character from its age, and, since it’s teak, it’s naturally weatherresistant. Additionally, no living trees die for the manufacture of the furniture.
The carved, Balinese-inspired pieces display the beauty of the reclaimed wood along with the talent of Balinese carvers past and present. Roy tells me that his process in Bali usually involves finding a highly carved panel that he likes—perhaps from the back of an otherwise dilapidated bench or mantelpiece—then uses that panel as inspiration for the rest of the piece. “The carved panels are usually original, and if they are damaged, they usually carve a new panel in the same old traditional way from an old piece of wood, so it is very hard to distinguish which is original and which is new. Every supplier has a hidden treasure area at the back of each work shop where I usually find these pieces.” He points to a dresser in his shop. “For a wedding, the village would get together and carve a large ceremonial marriage bed for the couple,”

Balinese carver recreating ancient designs
. . . continued from page 24 Roy says. “This leg was from one of those marriage beds,” he indicates the right leg of the dresser. “Then they make the other leg to match using the old teak and carve it in the old tradition.” I can’t tell the difference between the new leg and the old one—both are beautifully carved and minor imperfections in the old wood show its age. “Each village or area would have a set carving motif, and that carving would be passed down for generations. In the twelve years I’ve been going there, I recognize carvings, and I recognize each village that they come from.” Bali Style (1995) by Rio Helmi and Barbara Walker confirms Roy’s observations: “Motifs are specific in combinations of vines, flowers and symbols; however, there are always variations from one district to another or according to the whim of the artist.” Motifs in the Arawak showroom are mostly sunny-side-up flowers and scrolling vines. Roy leaves for Bali this week, to find more treasures and to synthesize the vision of ancient Balinese carvers with his own vision and the vision of his clients. PG

Makere House has a proper yard. A yard that begs for bare feet, picnics by candlelight, games of tag, cloud-gazing, frolicking dogs. A yard with a mango tree. And if such a thing as an infinity-edge lawn exists, Makere House has one.The yard is not the feature I first notice at Makere House, but it’s one of many surprises that unfold before me with each step I take through this property on Soldier Hill. The short stone pathway from the parking area to the front door of the main house is resplendent with vibrant colours and perfumed with fresh fragrances. Orange coconuts attempt to outshine magenta bougainvillea blooms and purple heart vines. Once inside the kitchen and family room area, the colours are more subdued— Mexican Saltillo tiles, white walls and countertops, wooden cabinets and shelves, driftwood-coloured cathedral ceilings and a few blue accents— emphasizing the beauty of the landscaping and the view of Cane Garden Bay. Four sets of double doors open to the wraparound porch and promote constant air flow. The outdoor dining table and chairs blend in with the wood of the deck. Again, the natural colours don’t detract from the aquamarine, cerulean and indigo waters of Cane Garden Bay or the jade, emerald and viridian hillsides of Tortola and neighbouring islands. A hammock sways between two posts on the southwest corner of the deck, and two Adirondack chairs point toward the sea, all waiting to be filled on a lazy afternoon.

Double doors from the deck lead back to the master bedroom which houses a sturdy, queen-sized bed, matching bedside tables and two large closets. The bright, spacious master bath occupies the northeast corner of the house, between the master bedroom and the kitchen. White tiles sparkle around the countertops and inside the vast shower space. Back in the master bedroom, folding doors open up to the family room, increasing the spaciousness of the entire living area. Outside the main house, accessible from the deck or the stone pathway by the front entrance, is the side yard with the mango tree and plush grass. Maritha Kiel from Caribbean Realty tells me this part of the island receives the highest amount of rainfall, a statement proven by the lush vegetation that covers the .79 acres. With a glass of lemonade, one could lean against the mango tree and while away hours staring out over the lawn’s edge which blends into the mountain-covered landscape. At the other end of the stone pathway, past the orange coconut palm, a stairway leads down to the large swimming pool, ceramic-tiled patio and guest house. The front door of the guest house opens to a small kitchen with a stainless steel double sink, a stove, an oven and a mini-fridge. The two bedrooms in the guest house are enormous. One could even be converted into a living area. Actually, each bedroom has enough room to host its own living area. From cathedral celings to cool tiles, both bedrooms are filled with light coming from large windows and double doors on either side that open to

The patio is furnished with a dining table and chairs, two synthetic white wicker chaise longues and an intimate bistro table. Stilt-like pillars the size of telephone poles support the hillside dwellings, allowing each house to extend into the scene. AUGUST 2009 BVI PROPERTY GUIDE ALOOKINGGLASS PUBLISHING | www.bviguides.com
On the eve of the eve of August Monday, several things will take place. Shoppers will crowd local markets, cooks will “slave” over hot stoves, nail technicians will be booked, nightclubs will be jumping, and the streets of Tortola will be blazing hot with throngs of people partying to the hottest calypso, soca or fungi beat. This partying and dancing will continue into the wee hours of Monday, around five o’clock to be more precise, when the morning ushers in Rise and Shine or J’ouvert as it’s commonly called throughout the Caribbean (this word comes from a combination of the French words for day and open: jour and ouvert). Does Rise and Shine deliberately coincide with the early rise of slaves heading to the plantation, or does it signify an early morning jubilee for paying homage to the dead? As the reason continues to be explored, this festivity is nevertheless a time for celebration. It’s an annual moment for locals, tourists and artists to whine and thrust their throbbing bodies in wild excitement through Tortola’s modern streets, several hours before the highlight of a mile-long parade. August Festival for many people will mean nothing more than a time for drinking, partying and vacationing. Yet, for those individuals whose ancestors built the BVI, and for those who are enlivened through culture and historical facts, August Festival holds something deeper. Unlike the cargo ships we often see in present day, carrying sleek automobiles, fancy home appliances and imported furnishings, the cargo ships of the 1800s brought Africans. Whole societies and communities of Africans were dropped as far south as Brazil, and sprinkled like candy along the way to North America, into the waiting chains of European slave masters including those on Tortola. A population consisting of 1,184 planters and 6,121 slaves worked these vast hills and volcanic mountains to provide wealth and comfort for their owners. That’s equivalent to nearly one fourth of the current population. Slavery was an abhorrent occurrence, and in the BVI it was as brutal as it gets. But, when it finally came to an end, freed slaves burst onto the streets in righteous jubilation

and for several days and nights, those who were once silenced and restricted from practising their native traditions were finally able to open their artistic, musical and religious tombs. There is a purpose behind every event during Festival from the colourful floats and coordinated dance troupes, to the organized pageants and ghostly Moko Jumbies. Anyone who’s attended Festival will tell you it’s a pulsating experience. Large trucks equipped with bulky speakers slowly cascade along the parade route, each one carrying a select group of people with costumes marking their identity. They could be political figures, pageant winners, family members, friends and musical acts. Participation from all walks of life is welcome, but early writings show that each band and their followers represented a different society, clan or location on the island. Fungi music, a staple of sound within the BVI was created by slaves who worked the sugar plantations. Not only did it serve as a communication tool for uplifting their souls, but
to be a representation of the ancestral spirits in Africa who kept an eye on impending danger to villagers. Beauty pageants and the selection of a BVI queen or Miss BVI are directly connected to the Queen of England’s own ceremonial crowning and the glamour and allure that it brought to the Territory. Emancipated Although slavery existed until 1838 for the majority of islands, slavery in the British Virgin Islands ended four years prior; nearly two centuries after it commenced. On the first Monday in August 1834, the Emancipation Proclamation was read to the public in front of the Sunday Morning Well in Road Town. The Well was said to represent a meeting place for people to gather strength from one another. Even now, members of the public use it to rap thoughts, raise awareness, chat with political figureheads and key business and decision makers on the important matters affecting this country. In the coming weeks, there will be hordes of budding girls and young women spending hours

Anyone who’s attended Festival will tell you it’s a pulsating experience the dialect or patois within fungi music often held messages concealed from the master. BVIslanders celebrated emancipation in the early 1900s primarily through church services, sports and picnics. The role of the church was integral in instilling worship and empowerment. However, the community eventually followed in the footsteps of other islands and these gatherings transitioned into a street fête. Moko Jumbies also played a significant role as they represented the protectors of the village. Unrealistically tall, via stilts, these entertainers are said

"False Sense of Well-Being" by Stephanie Clayton
Art Collectors in Paradise by Stephanie Clayton
Here in the BVI, most of us have a breathtaking view outside our windows. So, what’s on the walls? How about some art. To invest in art is to be passionate about another human being’s creation and to be sensitive to one’s own visual, emotional and spiritual well-being. Art compels us to think and feel differently, freely, openly. It can evoke a favourite memory or experience or invite quiet contemplation, joy, humour, mystery. Long-term BVI resident Susan Knudsen said she purchased a semi-abstract drawing for “its beautiful colours and recognition of a place on island. It reminds me of the houses on my road.” Collectors Abigail Blake and her husband Bones bought a painting to commemorate a special event: “Our most recent purchase was a piece my husband commissioned from local artist Lutai Tai Durante for our 15th wedding anniversary a few weeks ago.
"Intoxication 3" by Stephanie Clayton

If you already own a few artworks, try new It’s a painting of a local farmer tending his charcoal arrangements when introducing a new piece. It pits on Sage Mountain.” sounds rather obvious, but is quite easily overlooked. A painting is a stimulating conversation piece, an Think about all options. OBM Small Works by Steve Fox, OBM International
This month, OBMI formally launches our “Small Works” division in the British Virgin Islands. Having grown internationally over the past decade, with high profile projects on every continent and new offices in Miami, Madrid and Muscat, we’re often perceived as being focused primarily on the larger, high-end projects in the hotel and resort design sector. However, in reality, each of our island offices is deeply grounded in its local context and is working on a variety of project types at all scales. Our local BVI office is no exception, having a broad spread of residential, hospitality and commercial work for a wide variety of different clients. Within the BVI and on neighbouring islands, we continue to work on everything from small residential and commercial remodels and additions to mid-scale commercial buildings, interior design and, yes, entire resort communities including their décor and furnishing packages.
22
In small proportions we just beauties see; And in short measures, life may perfect be. – Benjamin Johnson
In a small and close-knit community such as ours, it pays to be flexible and responsive to the needs of the local market, and we pride ourselves on being able to respond quickly and seriously to all inquiries, big and small. The “Small Works” concept was developed by our Bermuda office some years ago to acknowledge and advertise this community connection. It has allowed our team in Bermuda to effectively engage with clients who are on a limited budget or who require a targeted amount of design or contractual input. Many property owners have in mind a general concept for how they would like to develop or improve their land or their building but do not necessarily have funds to carry out extensive work. “Small Works” is our way to let the community know that it’s possible for us to tailor our services, to assist with any aspect of a project, no matter how small, to achieve a client’s goals in a creative way.

There’s no strict definition of what constitutes a small project. The menu of services can include architectural and interior design, technical drafting, simple budgeting and cost estimating, specification of furniture, fixtures and finishes, assistance with Town Planning and Building Authority approvals, general property advice and the reviewing of construction documents. From a deck extension to a planning application for a new guest cottage, a new kitchen arrangement to a design for a new driveway, every project is unique and worthy of attention. In reality, OBM BVI has always undertaken these types of projects. Our interior designers, architects and technologists are used to working to tight budgets and challenging deadlines. But in these difficult economic times, by identifying and acknowledging the importance and significance of this work, we can elevate these “small” projects to give them the professional attention they deserve.
