From the Editor Who’s going to win? This is the current question in the aLookingGlass office as we continue our 2015 Readers’ Choice vote for the best people, places, and services in the British Virgin Islands. It’s always interesting to see who emerges as the most popular in the region and while some companies have held their award like a vice year after year, others have slipped at the wayside to their contenders with votes so close we were compelled to provide a runner-up award in 2014. We wish every nominee good fortune in this competitive event and if there are any queries, please email us: vipy@alookingglass.com. Voters will be entered in for great prizes so jump to it at bvipropertyyacht.com/readers-choice-2015/. Hurricane Survival 7-Point Checklist Words by Stephen L France. Photography by Antilles Helicopter Services
To find someone who relishes the subject of hurricanes would be rare; however, the topic is a reality in the BVI and one that must be addressed. Fortunately, the area we’re situated in on the globe has seen less ‘action’ than some of our neighbours with 2010’s Hurricane Earl being a recent exception; the main positive in that affair was that damage to buildings was relatively light. The scarcity of hurricane impact is a strong allure for choosing the BVI as the location for your Caribbean property purchase in stark contrast to other islands that endure unpleasant conclusions during hurricane season. Nevertheless, it’s always prudent to be informed and so here are some facts about ‘hurricane vs BVI buildings’ amassed from architects and realtors over our VIPY publication tenure. Any property buyer or individual constructing a new-build home would want to use this checklist with their employed professionals, just to be doubly safe.

The Sweetest Part of the Day
Vacationing in the British Virgin Islands is nothing but exciting; every minute full of promise and anticipation – adventure, relaxation, beautiful sights, or simply creating lasting memories with the ones you love. Onboard Lolalita, there’s one thing everyone seems anxious for everyday: dessert. That time of day—just before the sun sets and the moon graces us with its presence—is magical. The cocktails flow, the appetisers are passed around, and then as the sunset glows in the distance, we move into dinner hour. After a delightful meal prepared to guests’ preferences, the final, sweet course is served. Here’s where I always have the most fun. What will be that lingering flavour to end every perfect day? It’s a big responsibility to be taken seriously. Each day’s menu calls for a dessert pairing as careful as choosing a fine wine. Here is one of my favourites:

SEA Words and photography by Geoffrey Brooks, Curator – Virgin Islands Maritime Museum
Though not really a history tale this time, we are pleased to celebrate a present day event with regard to our traditional seafaring culture, the Virgin Islands sloops… The H. Lavity Stoutt Community College through its Virgin Island Studies Institute and the Maritime Museum has—by the kind donation of two private individuals—recently acquired two traditional sloops to add to their growing fleet of locally designed boats. The most recent addition is a half-finished hull which was traditionally constructed in Anegada by local shipwright Watson White. She was the result of a UNESCO funded project which had Mr. White teaching traditional wooden boat building skills to several local youths. The project began about seven years ago and lasted about a year until the limited funding ran out. Although successful in teaching skills

to young men which would otherwise been lost, it left a half finished hull under a shed in Anegada. Over the years, a hurricane blew the roof off the shed and Mr. White sold most of his property to what has now become the Anegada Beach Club, an upscale and green resort. With the threat of termites invading the frame, it was time to make a move or lose any hope of finishing the sloop. The problem as with most endeavours came down to money, or lack of it. Funding at the College has been cut over the last few years and there just wasn’t enough in the Maritime Museum budget to take on a project like this. The museum and Virgin Islands Studies Institute has come to rely more and more on help from the private sector to achieve their goals in the preservation of Virgin Islands culture; this time help came from a long-time supporter, VP Bank. VP Bank has in the past helped fund the publishing of Building a Virgin Islands Sloop, a book I authored as a primary school tool to educate the young about traditional wooden sloop construction. They purchased Intrepid, a traditional wooden sloop discovered in St. Croix
and donated her to the College. They also sponsor ‘The Tortola Sloop

She is now located at the College’s centre for Applied Marine Studies where work should commence soon. The only missing piece is what to name her. The second new arrival to our fleet is the sleek and beautiful hybrid sloop Esmie which was designed, built, and most generously donated to the College by local businessman Mr. Leando Nibbs. Esmie needs a lot of ballast and a large crew to compete successfully, but she is a true thoroughbred when wellhandled. She even looks fast when just sitting at the dock. The next big race for her will be this month’s August Festival races. In conclusion, let me say that I am very heartened by the support our programme in preserving the Maritime Heritage of the Virgin Islands is receiving from both local businesses and private individuals within the community; I hope it will continue long into the future. The example being set by the dedication and generosity of VP Bank and local entrepreneurs like Mr. Leando Nibbs is ensuring the salvation of our local culture for future generations of Virgin Islanders.

The concept sounds simple enough and seems almost unquestionable as to why it shouldn’t be implemented in as many places we can find. Coral have declined upwards of 80% throughout the Caribbean over the past 40 years, makes one wonder what the future will bring for younger generations; however,
reefs are necessary for food, coastal protection, tourism, and even to help replenish the sand that creates our beaches. While the benefits of having healthy reef ecosystems far outweigh the

effort to reverse the decline of deteriorating reefs. Like a garden nursery uses a greenhouse to help grow young fragile plants in a protected environment, the same concept is used for coral nurseries. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ‘trees’ or cinderblocks are used to ‘house’ small fragments of coral until they grow strong enough (about the size of a cantaloupe) to remove from the nursery. Where these corals are then planted
Several years ago, a number of applications from various organisations were submitted to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour to implement coral nurseries in the BVI; however, a coral nursery is considered as a ‘development’ under Virgin Islands laws and technically requires both a sea bed license and permission from the Planning Authority. Coming up with a way to waive these requirements for a programme

fruition and the implementation of the BVI’s first coral nurseries were established off of Little Thatch and Virgin Gorda. The Coral Reef Restoration Committee acts as the managing body of the nurseries and is composed of both local government and nongovernmental organisations. Over the following year, this pilot project is being guided by the financial and technical support of the Nature Conservancy to ensure the success of the nurseries while the day-to-day management of maintaining the nurseries is being carried out by the Association of Reef Keepers (ARK). As the committee and a select few volunteers literally ‘get their feet wet’ learning what it takes to have successful nurseries over this first year, these lessons learned will be passed on to the local community to help participate in the programme. With all the stakeholders contributing, reversing the decline of our coral reefs has a much better chance of succeeding, thus maintaining the natural environment of the BVI. www.bvipropertyyacht.com

You’re shot into the air high above the ocean’s surface, feeling the wind on your cheeks and the waves splash against your skin. Spectators stare in awe and ponder what could possibly cause you to shoot above the water’s surface at such an incredible speed. Flyboards and hoverboards are among the hottest new trends in extreme water sports, gaining popularity in locations throughout the Caribbean. The intriguing activity is now available to try at Leverick Bay in the North Sound on Virgin Gorda with the experts at Blue Rush Water Sports. Blue Rush Water Sports was founded by cousins Trevor Walters and Josh Wheatley as a new watersport enterprise in the North Sound. What began with two jet skis has expanded to include a diverse array of water activities including kayaks, hobie cats, paddle boards, and its latest addition, flyboards and hoverboards.

After numerous requests from customers who tried the company’s other activities, the guys decided to invest in this cutting-edge device that permits flight over the sea. The original flyboard, invented in the fall of 2012 by Franky Zapata, is a personal jet pack which mounts to the rider’s feet, attached by a 55 foot hose connected to a personal watercraft (PWC) – typically a jet ski- which provides a blast of water with enough power to propel them up to 40 feet in the air. Hoverboards were introduced after flyboards with the same technical design, yet instead of strapping the feet into two shoes, they are perpendicular to the board using slip-in bindings such as those on a kite board. Using aflyboard must always be done under the supervision of experts, such as the qualified professionals at Blue Rush. Riders are provided with a lifejacket and helmet, and must complete a five minute safety training session to ensure that they will not come into contact with foreign objects.

Although the sport appears to be intimidating and looks quite challenging, using a flyboard is surprisingly easy to learn, and can be enjoyed by anyone ages seven and up. With assistance, riders strap their feet into the shoes on the board and are lowered into the water in an upright, standing position with their legs remaining as straight as possible. Navigation on the flyboard is done by using the knees and ankles, pointing the toes down to move forward, using the knees to rotate, and the arms to stabilise. The power of the water is controlled by the driver of the PWC who watches to identify the rider’s positioning to increase or decrease the power to provide a comfortable descent back into the water. “For beginners, the flyboard requires little to no body strength and that’s because the board takes care of everything. However, when you get into the backflips, dolphin dives and all the other high-powered moves then you will need mid-section and lower body power to execute the moves successfully,” said Trevor Walters, co-founder of Blue Rush Water Sports. The beauty of this exciting new sport is that it requires no skill and little confidence in order to ride successfully. In fact, Trevor guarantees that if Blue Rush doesn’t get you flying in the first ten minutes, your session is free.

QUICK AND EASY TESTING - NO BLOOD NEEDED!
Words by Lauren Charley and provided by BVI HIV AIDS Foundation
In 2004, the HIV-AIDS Foundation (BVI) Limited (HAF) was established as a non-government, not-for-profit charitable organisation incorporated and registered under the laws of the Virgin Islands. The establishment of the foundation was to financially assist pregnant women to access HIV testing – following, it enhanced the development of a collaborative relationship with the national health programme and facilitated the development of the Prevention-of-Mother-to-Child-Transmission (PMTCT) Programme.
VISION
The foundation will be known and recognised as the lead non-governmental organisation in the British Virgin Islands to reduce HIV transmission and advocate for the rights of people living with HIV.

MEMBERSHIP
All are welcome to become members of HAF. Membership is open to all individuals and organisations who agree to accept the foundation’s vision, mission, and objectives. An annual membership fee of $25 is required in order to maintain its current operations and support the further development of the charity.
EDUCATION
HAF primarily uses social media such as Facebook as a resource to target the younger population by educating, raising awareness, and encouraging testing in the Territory.
FREE TESTING
The foundation provides free and confidential HIV testing services Monday through Friday by appointment at their office in Road Town. Testing is made simple by an ‘OraQuick’ test which is fast, painless, requires no blood, and only a swab of the gums to provide results in just 20 minutes*.
FUNDRAISING AND EVENTS
In the past, the foundation raised money by requesting donations from companies and individuals who support them. However, HAF is now working with these sponsors to fundraise through raffles and events which bring the charity to the public’s attention and encourage the community to get involved. HAF has many ideas for future events in the BVI, including the prospects to host an exciting World Aids Day later this year.
THE MAIN GOAL
“Our main goal for the foundation is to eliminate the stigma that is attached to HIV and that is ever so present in the BVI. We want people to understand that HIV is a chronic disease just like diabetes or cancer except that it is 100% preventable if you use protection and if you are aware of the risks. Most importantly, HAF want to teach people that with the right medication and care, one can live a healthy and normal life if you are HIV positive, and that we are here to help achieve this.” - Cid Nava, Chairman of BIV HIV AIDS Foundation. www.bvipropertyyacht.com

LI F E ARTISTS’ CORNER
Words by Lauren Charley. Photography courtesy of Killi Killi
Prepare to take flight as you spread your wings and expand your mind by exposing yourself to a whole new world of artistic creativity. Named after what our local culture calls the American Kestrel Sparrow Hawk, ‘The Killy,’ Killi Killi Arts Company invites residents and visitors to the British Virgin Islands to join classes and social gatherings founded on a passion for arts and the spirit of community. Killi Killi was established in January 2014 by Nick and Vanessa Cook, and Mary Ormond to expand the options offered in the creative arts for children and families. The company operates on a non-profit organisation model (awaiting official status), therefore all the furniture, toys and equipment at Killi Killi have been donated by businesses and individuals in the community. “We want to be a friendly, ‘door-open’ community centre where all are welcome to just hang out and have fun,” said Cloudia, theatre practitioner and dance instructor at Killi Killi. The facility in Road Town is now a popular social hub for families and individuals, which includes a lounge area for parents, two studios, a play area complete with a performance stage, and a vast outdoor area where a community playground will be built for the autumn Child and Youth Programmes At the centre, tots, children and older youths are welcome to sign up for a variety of educational artistic classes season. offered on an alternating basis in the artistic mediums. In addition to general visual arts, dance, music, and drama, they also offer unique courses including toddler aerobics, children’s yoga, and musical theatre.
Adult Programmes Killi Killi also encourages individuals to sign up for classes, as well as engage in social gatherings such as book swaps. Popular adult classes such as jazzercise, yoga, aerobics, playwriting, and sewing regularly appear on the schedule, as well as a special circus class for those who wish to learn tricks such as juggling, hula hooping, and even fire dancing. The company hopes to offer a ‘Production Project’ in the fall where they will select a play or musical to showcase for the community; participants can sign up and audition for the course which will conclude with this grand finale.
