Welcome, one and all
As Premier of these beautiful islands, we are delighted to welcome you with BVILOVE to our home, the British Virgin Islands. Our small cluster of islands with secluded anchorages, splendid beaches, a world-class marine industry, and favourable trade winds, has combined to earn us the reputation of “Sailing Capital of the World.” Our magnificent archipelago has re-emerged to showcase even more stunning, pristine land and seascapes. But more significantly, as a people emerging from recent adversity, we have shown resilience and returned to our core values, which we call BVILOVE. BVILOVE is a mantra that unites not only the people of the territory but resonates through all the sectors of the economy and the various aspects of our lives.
We love our British Virgin Islands, and we invite you to love this territory too. In fact, we know that many of our loyal guests have had a lifetime love affair with the British Virgin Islands, and first-time guests quickly embrace us as well.
I am pleased to say that we have a renewed focus on showcasing authentic experiences in the British Virgin Islands, celebrating our people, our culture, and rich heritage of hospitality.
I congratulate and express thanks to Virgin Islands Property & Yacht magazine for joining us in spreading BVILOVE with this special issue that celebrates the Festive season. I am sure you will enjoy the many stories, talented people and spectacular scenery being profiled. However, we hope that your encounter with BVILOVE does not end in the pages of this magazine, but that you will explore our many islands and cays and truly indulge in the many authentic experiences that we have to offer. Experience our local cuisine prepared by awardwinning chefs or local cooks–I’m sure you will love our national dish of fungi and fish; go sailing with our many
experienced captains and explore secret getaways, where cobalt blue waves splash against powder white sand beaches; take a safari bus over our lush green hillsides for the most spectacular views; meet some of our colourful characters who are guaranteed to make your visit memorable; discover our many attractions from museums in Tortola, the colourful, laidback beach bars on Jost Van Dyke and nearby cays, the Greater Baths National Park in Virgin Gorda, the Conch Shell Mounds in Anegada and the many other unique experiences found throughout our entire chain of islands.
At the end of your trip, we believe that the only difficulty you will face will be that of choosing your favourite island. If you are visiting, I implore you to take time for what I would describe as an amazing combination of pleasurable activities, unforgettable sightseeing adventures, and natureinduced relaxation, which will rejuvenate your body, mind, and soul. Our people are eager to welcome all visitors to our territory, whether you are a repeat visitor or if you are making your maiden voyage to the British Virgin Islands. Welcome again and thank you for making the British Virgin Islands your destination of choice. Do have an enjoyable visit with us, and we look forward to greeting you with BVILOVE on your next visit!

On our cover and in our exclusive cover feature article, take a tour of The Little Bay Estate, presented by Chris Tilling of Cocoplum Properties. This incredible property is hidden away in the North Sound of Virgin Gorda and only accessible by boat and helicopter. Whether you are a complete beginner or a pro, you will soon be up flying across the beautiful clear waters of the North Sound.
To finish off this issue, we remember BVI Entrepreneur, Chuck Krallman. A dear friend and mentor to many, he was one in a million with a razor sharp wit, a kind heart and a sweet smile. Rest in peace dear Chuck. You will be missed. Happy season to you all.
A rare beachfront estate, this magnificent property includes nearly 2,000 feet of oceanfront and is accessible only by boat and helicopter for ultimate privacy.
BY: CHARLIE BUFTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY: JULIA STARKEY, ALTON BERTIE & LITTLE BAY ESTATEIt is 5:30 pm on a Wednesday and I am aboard a boat that’s skimming its way across the perfectly flat and calm water of Virgin Gorda’s prestigious North Sound. It is not my usual Wednesday evening, but it is an unusual property that I’m going to see. Tucked away on an unspoiled bay in what might be the world’s most exclusive neighbourhood, is Little Bay. A magnificent seven-acre oceanfront property with a fourbedroom, six-and-a-half-bathroom home set on a pristine 2000-foot stretch of prime waterfront. As the setting sun starts to dip behind the hills and the golden shine lights up the water and the islands around me, I keep my eyes peeled for the property we’re visiting. As we round one of the headlands, I see a wide expanse of white sandy beach and the house comes into view - just set back from the water and distinctively painted in greens that blend with the hillside behind. The large deck of the Beach House is bordered by an immaculate lawn area dotted with palm trees. We pull up to the larger of the two private docks and alight to explore the property.
The plot is an impressive seven acres of oceanfront property with a beautiful stretch of beach flanked by two elevated rocky headlands. One of the headlands (Camelia Point) has been developed with two cliff-top guesthouses that benefit from stunning 280-degree views and a constant cooling sea breeze. These delightful stand-alone guest accommodations consist of a onebedroom, one-and-a-half bathroom cottage and a two-bedroom, twobathroom cottage. Both with open plan kitchen/dining areas and a combined space of approximately 1,500-sqft. The guest cottages also benefit from spacious covered and uncovered decks that allow you to relax in comfort and take in the spectacular island views. Down on the seafront are the main Beach House and the landscaped gardens, just a few feet from the water’s edge. The estate then includes a vacant Western peninsula, which would make a fantastic location for a further house or swimming pool. This second headland has

been cleared and would make the ideal spot for a future dwelling with panoramic views of the neighbouring islands. A smooth concrete access road wraps around the back of the villas and connects the Beach House with the docks and the private clifftop guest units, with easy buggy transportation between them. The spectacular property provides unparalleled views of the North Sound, Prickly Pear, Saba Rock and Necker and Moskito Island.
Little Bay is a haven for a sailor or water sports enthusiast. With two private docks - the largest of which is 180-feet long with a 10-foot draft - it is amply equipped for the berthing of several sizeable yachts or pleasure craft. A second 90-foot service dock and swim platform are situated on the western edge of the bay. One of the highlights of the property is this private water access, because although it is located on Virgin Gorda
mainland, there is no road access. The property is only accessible from the water, or via helicopter. Thus, the estate brings the complete privacy of a luxury island retreat while conveniently just a short boat ride from some of the Territory’s premiere hotels and resorts. The North Sound is undeniably one of the best anchorages in the BVI and Little Bay is the perfect Caribbean sanctuary. Inside the main villa, the Beach House, the decor is minimal - smooth white plaster walls and clean lines with an ultra-contemporary feel. Sparsely but comfortably furnished with huge floor-to-ceiling windows and concertina glass doors to make the most of the natural light and showcase the Caribbean island views. The interior space feels elegant and modern with white oak floors throughout and light flooding in. A series of detailed pen and ink art pieces featuring sea life adorn the cool
white walls adding a beautifully chic and understated talking point. The design team has utilised a sumptuous mix of natural textures, including rope, glass, canvas, wood and cork. The living and entertaining spaces of the Beach House are on the lower level, as is one of the guest bedrooms. A further three bedrooms, including the spacious primary suite with double ensuite bathrooms and walk-in closets, are on the second floor. The upper bedrooms benefit from generous covered decks, which capitalize on the breathtaking sea views.
The main house was exquisitely designed by architects Smith Arneborg, built by the construction team at Yates Associates and expertly overseen by construction engineers David Brockelbank and Richard Grinnell. The finish of the properties is impeccable, constructed to the highest specification with flawless attention to detail and finished with the sleek modern, minimalist interior style by Design Within Reach. The generously sized gourmet chef’s kitchen is a private chef’s dream. Well equipped with a professional six-burner gas range and double ovens. There is plentiful

glossy white cabinetry and drawer space, a large prep-station and a dedicated butler’s pantry. Stainless appliances, a wine cooler, a SubZero fridge and freezer and a spacious island allow for effortless entertaining and elaborate meals. A breakfast nook off the kitchen is a welcoming spot to enjoy a morning coffee and take in the sea views. The stretch of manicured lawn,
beautifully landscaped with a small palm grove is adjacent to the Beach House main porch area. The large hardwood-covered deck wraps around the front of the villa and along the beach side and a glass outdoor dining table and chairs are perfectly situated to enjoy al fresco dining. It is a wonderfully inviting place to spend an evening under the stars, sitting inches from the ocean, listening to the waves lap gently at the edge of the water and watching the lights from the nearby islands twinkle in the distance.
All practicalities have been considered and additional on-site facilities include mains power with supplementary solar panels, a backup generator, high-speed Internet, large cisterns and an RO plant, making the property completely self-sufficient. The maintenance shed, conveniently next to the dock, houses all of the water sports equipment, tools, fuel and supplies.
The North Sound, Virgin Gorda is known for its 5 star luxury resorts and private islands. It is a water sports Mecca with near-perfect sailing, windsurfing and kite boarding conditions all year round. A haven for those that love to be on, in or under the water. Visitors flock here for the sunshine, the warm waters and trade winds, enjoying the safe anchorage and protected waters. It is home to some of the most exclusive resorts in the Caribbean, and neighbouring properties include Saba Rock Resort, the Bitter End Yacht Club, Oil Nut Bay and Sir Richard Branson’s Necker and Moskito islands.
The long stretch of sandy beach at Little Bay invites you to paddle board, kite board or snorkel just footsteps from the Beach House. Calm and protected it is ideal for launching a Hobie Cat or kayak to explore. There is easy snorkelling right off the beach and towards either of the two rocky headlands, you will find a host of diverse aquatic life, tropical fish, turtles and rays. Snorkelling and diving in the warm Caribbean waters of the British Virgin Islands is some of the best in the world.
Little Bay represents an incredibly rare opportunity to buy in Virgin Gorda’s coveted North Sound. The beautifully secluded nature of the property offers a unique opportunity to buy a piece of land that is technically a part of the mainland but with a private island feel. Enjoying the practical benefits of having the infrastructure of Virgin Gorda but the total privacy of an island resort due
to the lack of road access. And while Little Bay has always previously been a private abode - the potential exists to develop a luxury rental or highend boutique resort on the estate. The demand for accommodation and interest in the area is high.
Property Manager, Christopher Tilling of Cocoplum Management has managed the Little Bay estate for the last two years. Previous to that he worked with other luxury estates, including Valley Trunk, Cooper Island and Bald Head Island. He says of the property “After nearly 40 years of managing exclusive properties throughout the Caribbean, I was invited to be the custodian for Little Bay. For those among us who treasure privacy; but not seclusion; security without encumbrance or beauty without limit, Little Bay has no parallel. Located in one of the most prestigious residential areas of the Caribbean, a rare opportunity has presented itself to own a stunning waterfront property in one of the safest anchorages in the Territory.” •

pillows in different patterns bring interest to the room, popping against the crisp, white linen sheets. The abstract painting brings a bright element and elevates the space. Adding privacy but not compromising on charm, sheer white, floor-toceiling curtains bring a light, airy and open feel to the bedroom. And when the beautiful ocean view beckons you, don’t worry, there’s a balcony right outside to enjoy. There is also a separate study, making it your perfect getaway at home. And of course, this wouldn’t be a master suite without a grand bathroom. As you step off the plush carpet and onto the pristine ceramic tiles, you’ll immediately notice how the bathroom remains in keeping with the island theme. One the third floor, get ready to set sail in any of the two rooms that continue the ocean inspired theme. There are two rooms that can hold long size beds, complimented by a
balcony and spacious floor-to-ceiling windows. A decorative wood wall adds warmth against the white walls, curtains and linen bed sheets. A textured carpet adds to this warmth as well as gives one a feeling of sand on a beach. There is also a spacious en-suite bathroom with premium amenities. In this space, you will also find a cosy nook in the corner of the room, complete with a comfy chair and coffee table. Whether it’s sleeping or sitting or reading a book, nothing says relaxation like a nook. On the third floor, you’ll also find a laundry room and owner’s closet. And what’s better with this property is there are a number of nearby recreational amenities to enjoy. There is the Brandywine Estate Restaurant, which is just a 10-minute drive from town. When taken together, this property creates the perfect setting for the ultimate island escape for prospective homeowners. •

MAKES 18-20 BISCUITS
INGREDIENTS
• 225g butter at room temperature
• 170g dark muscovado sugar
• 1 egg
• 340g plain flour
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 2 tsp cinnamon
• 1 tsp ginger
• 150g powdered sugar - sieved
• 1tbsp water
• green food colouring
METHOD
1. Start by mixing the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
2. Add the egg slowly.
3. In a separate bowl sieve all the dry ingredients together. Add to the butter, sugar and egg mix.
4. Mix together slowly until all the ingredients are combined. Avoid over mixing as it will make for a very tough cookie. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and leave to cool in the fridge for at least an hour - overnight is even better.
5. When ready to roll out- working with only a small amount at a time.
Nothing beats a crunchy gingerbread biscuit at this time of year. These Christmas tree cookies make a great gift... if you can bare to give them away!
Use your cookie cutter to make as many christmas trees as you can. Place them on a lined baking tray and pop in the fridge for 20 minutes - this chills them and prevents them from spreading and losing their shape whilst baking.
6. Remove from the fridge and bake in the oven at 375º for 8-10 minutes or until the edges start to turn a little browner.
7. Remove and leave to cool completely on a rack.
8. To decorate: Make royal icing by adding the water to powdered sugar till it is a strong consistency. add enough green food colouring to make a nice Christmas colour. Don’t let the icing get too runny or it will be difficult to use. Place it in a piping bag with a small nozzle.
9. Pipe dots all over each cookie. Leave to harden for at least an hour otherwise the icing will smudge. •
When ready to roll out- working with only a small amount at a time. Use your cookie cutter to make as many christmas trees as you can.
TOP TIP:
Why not mix up different coloured icings for a more colourful look?
These hand made luggage labels are a sweet Christmas gift and fun to make!
BY: SCARBORO, SIMON/LINES+ANGLESA gift tag doesn’t have to be just for Christmas, a personalised home made one will be used for years to come on lunch boxes, pencil cases and even suitcases alike. You will need: Cotton fabric, embroidery threads, embroidery hoop eyelets, ribbon, pencil, scissors, needle, sewing machine (but you can make it by hand sewing)
• Draw an outline of the gift tag on the cotton fabric. Write the name very lightly in pencil in the centre of the tag then draw on the holly. Place the fabric in the embroidery hoop.
• Sew a running stitch over the name then sew the embroidery thread through the stitching from the top so you are moving in and out till the letters are clear.
• Sew the holly leaves a deep green colour with bright red berries.
DIY CHRISTMASUse an eyelet punch kit to make the hole in the top of the gift tag. Thread ribbon through the eyelet and adorn your gift.
• Remove the luggage label from the embroidery hoop.
• Cut out a second luggage label from the fabric and lay it directly over the embroidered piece. Pin in place then cut out the original tag. Sew around the outside edge leaving the top side open. Trim the hems and corners then turn the fabric through to the right side. Iron with a cool heat to make sure the tag lies flat. Sew up the open end then iron that too.
• Use an eyelet punch kit to make the hole in the top of the gift tag. Thread ribbon through the eyelet and adorn your gift. •
TOP TIP:
Make sure the embroidered name sewing is neat on the back or it will show through the frontespecially on thin, light coloured fabrics.
We profile four of the best BVI beaches for a family Christmas picnic.
BY: ANIKA M. CHRISTOPHERIt’s the holidays! The perfect time of the year for…picnics! Who said you have to wait for summertime to plan a picnic? While other parts of the world may be setting up camp indoors, we can celebrate the Christmas season by soaking up the warm sun and taking a dive into our pristine waters. And here in the Virgin Islands, there’s no shortage of magnificent and magical beaches to visit with your friends and family. From beautiful boulders to sandy stretches, here are the top BVI beaches for the perfect Christmas picnic:
Looking to have a romantic getaway this holiday season? The beach often creates a romantic. Perhaps it is the picturesque sunset or the sound of the cool wind rustling through palm leaves or the waves lapping on the shore, or the spectacular view of the immense ocean. When looking for that romantic beach, Little Bay, Tortola is the way to go. Because of its remote location, just east of Lambert, this private, paradisiac spot provides the perfect setting for a lover’s picnic. Finding a spot on this exclusive stretch of sand is not difficult at all.
Lined with plants like sea grape trees and mangroves, a tropical pathway takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the street, leading you to the unspoiled beach at Little Bay. There are large boulders at the western end and it is fringed with sea grapes at its eastern border. The beach boasts brilliantly white sand that stretches straight to the shore, covering the ocean floor. Kick off your shoes and sink your toes into the soft sand as you and your partner
take a romantic walk down the beach. You can dip your feet in the water and unlike some of the rockier shallows of the Virgin Islands, Little Bay’s waterways contain nothing but white sand and flowing ocean. Suppose while enjoying your picnic, you realize your basket is missing something. Fortunately for this beach, shopping amenities are not for away! In less than a fiveminute drive over the mountain, you’ll find East End. From grocery stores to bakeries to restaurants, East End will meet all your shopping needs. Now, nearby East End and only a 10-minute drive away from Little Bay, you’ll find Beef Island and yet another spectacular beach.
Located on Beef Island, Long Bay Beach is accessible from Tortola by the Beef Island Bridge and from the other islands by boat. Located behind the Beef Island Salt Pond, in order to not disturb potential nesting terns, you can enter by the road to Little Mountain Estates at the western end or the dirt road that borders the pond at its eastern end. This picturesque seascape is another beach renowned for its pearly white sand, calm and clear waters and notable lack of seaweed or rocks. With a shoreline framed by lush trees, set-up your picnic and relax in nature and experience the luxury of VI living at this scenic getaway. With sheltered water, you can go for a dive at any time. There are also a number
of amenities that make it an ideal spot for your holiday picnic. You’ll find bathrooms onsite, an outside shower to rinse off salt and sand. If you aren’t looking to pack your own picnic, there are also a few food booths that can meet all your needs.
On one of the most secluded islands in the territory, Loblolly Bay Beach is tucked away on the northern side of Anegada. Aptly nicknamed “The Beach Lover’s Island”. You can centre your attention on its natural beauty, particularly the beach’s rippling waves and white sandy shores. To supplement your picnic, you’ll find bars and restaurants nearby, like the Big Bamboo that

overlooks the bay. Enjoy a rum punch or lobster for lunch, which is a signature dish of the island. Walk along the beach and pick your favourite luxury beachfront cottages that line the coast. Besides the soft white sand, there are many other fun aspects of nature to take a stroll through and explore. As you walk, you’ll also find salt ponds and blooming cacti. This beach also offers the chance to sightsee on shore. Be on the lookout for animals like the rare rock iguana and flamingos.
If you aren’t in the mood to pack your own picnic, there’s no need to worry!
White Bay Beach is home to dazzling pearly white sands and crystal-clear seas but it doesn’t stop there! This beach is also home to one of the most iconic bars in the Virgin Islands; the Soggy Dollar Beach Bar. This legendary beach bar serves delectable island style dishes and strong rum drinks, like its signature the Painkiller. This famous drink, a mixture of premium Pusser’s Rum, cream of coconut, pineapple and orange juice topped with freshly grated nutmeg, both originated and perfected at Soggy Dollar in the 1970s.
Recline in a lounge chair with your drink and enjoy the scenic view of the beach. After you’ve dined on delicious meals and tropical cocktails, you can even consider packing up your picnic and staying in one of the beachfront cottages with its outstanding views of the sea.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly beach that is also far from the masses, there is one just for you on the island of Virgin Gorda. Although this beach is adjacent to The Baths and forms part of The Baths Protected Area, it is accessible by road. Upon entrance, there is a main lot that can accommodate plenty of cars. From the parking area, there is a short trail that weaves through a scenic stretch of lush trees. This fun walking/hiking trail sets Spring Bay apart, offering the family more to do and enjoy while at the beach. Be sure to walk with sturdy shoes for the hike, where you can stop at various points along the way to take in the astounding scenery and even take a few pictures. Once you arrive at the beach, you’ll quickly realize that there’s so much more that makes this beach perfect for a family picnic.
To start, there are areas with picnic tables to place your coolers and baskets with your lunch for the day. Along with picnic areas and coastal hikes, this beautiful beach also features an area with grills for an onsite barbeque. There is also a playground area that the little ones will absolutely love! This beach boasts plenty of sand for building
sand castles. Apart from that, the beach also goes on for miles, surrounded by a cave-like landscape, boulders and rock formations just like the neighbouring Baths. Depending on the area you set up, you’ll find natural caves, sea grapevines and a few shade spots here and there. The cool waves break over the rock formations, making the tides shallow, serene and perfect for young swimmers.
As the holiday season swiftly approaches, plan your special holiday picnic today! From luxurious restaurants and bars serving delicious local cuisine to fun playgrounds and picnic areas, the Virgin Islands makes for an outstanding coastal Christmas!

Many have heard of the renowned private resort in the North Sound of Virgin Gorda, Oil Nut Bay. Founder and Chairman, Mr David V. Johnson wanted to create the same feel and vibe as the resort, so came up with Oil Nut Bay Marina Village - a place for everyone to enjoy.
Here Mr Johnson and his team have created a world-class marina, highend restaurant Nova, a coffee shop, Luna Boutique for the ladies and water sports and menswear store, Deep Bay Watersports.
Deep Bay Watersports has teamed up with Anegada based Tommy Gaunt Kiting School to not only offer guests kayak, SUPs and e-foiling rentals but also professional kiting and wing foiling lessons in the North Sound.
Haven’t got the right gear? No problem, at Deep Bay Watersports menswear retail store guests can pick
up water sports gear, shoes, apparel and accessories from some of the most renowned leisurewear brands.
What is e-foiling?
E-foil boards look similar to surfboards but with a foil underneath. They are batterypowered with a wireless remote control. This creates an experience that’s a mix of surfing, flying and deep powder snowboarding. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced thrill-seeker, the e-foil allows you to ride over any body of water.
Deep Bay Watersports have become an affiliate of Puerto Rico made Lift Foils – a leader in e-foil manufacturing.
The dedicated Instructor at Deep Bay Watersports can take up to 6 people per lesson. Each lesson is two hours long and to start with all guests are given a safety briefing, general information about the e-foils and are provided with safety gear, including helmet, impact vest and knee pads.
The lesson begins with a 15-minute demonstration on land with simulations, then guests launch off the small beach at Oil Nut Bay Marina Village to learn, in progressive steps, how to e-foil. The instructor accompanies the guests on the water in a small powerboat where they provide hands-on teaching, tips and demonstrations. Guests are kept in a small area to begin with, then as confidence grows are able to utilise more of the bay by the end of the lesson.
The area where guests learn is directly in front of Oil Nut Bay
Marina Village, in Deep Bay, unless the weather is inclement, in which case the instructor will transport the guests to a more sheltered area in North Sound.
“It is the one foiling sport that is the easiest to learn. No matter your level of experience, just come with good balance and an enjoyment of the water and we’ll get you riding on the e-foil right here in the stunning waters of the North Sound.” Roy Keegan, Owner.
Access when arriving by boat is easy - you can either dock your boat at Oil Nut Bay Marina Village or pick up a mooring buoy in Deep Bay and come to Deep Bay Watersports retail location to start the lesson. All while your friends and family

The BVI recently lost a special person in our community. We celebrate the life of Chuck Krallman and his departing legacy.
Chuck Krallman loved people, technology and the BVI. A native of New Albany, Ohio, where his father served as mayor, Chuck, the creator of the BVI Now App, first arrived in the BVI in 1989 after many successful years working in the tech industry.
Chuck’s early accomplishments included creating customer-driven strategies for multinational retail chains in software and marketing consulting. In his more than 40-years in the technology business, he worked with many of the world’s largest retailers and was involved in the original design of and successful patent applications for one of the first tablet computers with a removable keyboard - a precursor to the Microsoft Surface Pro computer. His friends Mark and Cate Stephenson met him around 2001. “He was always fascinated by technology,” said Mark. He had a knack for taking something that was technically very complicated and simplifying it, which is what appealed to the retailers that he
“He threw open his doors to visitors and greeted them with a loud, ‘Well hello!’
Everybody he met was made to feel special. He had a quick wit about him.”
David Penn
worked with over the years. He had a strong tie to the retail industry and would create short, targeted exit surveys for retailers so that they could derive valuable insight from their customer base and thereby make informed decisions to optimize their offerings. Drawing from his decades of professional experience, Chuck was known to generously share his technical knowledge and general wisdom about a variety of topics with his friends in the BVI.
Chuck’s friend and colleague David Penn said the BVI hasn’t yet realised the resources it had in Chuck. “He was knowledgeable about practically everything,” he said. “I think he was a savant as far as technology is concerned.” But if there was one passion that drove him, his friends agreed, it was his love for the British Virgin Islands.
As soon as Chuck arrived in the BVI, he instantly fell in love with it. Shortly afterward, he purchased a house at Beef Island, where he quickly became familiar on the BVI social scene due to his gregarious nature, generosity and unique way with a story and a joke.
Chuck considered himself an unofficial ambassador to the BVI, always welcoming a seemingly endless stream of guests. He would often await their arrival at the airport in his vehicle, ready with a gallon of Mango Mayhem, his special fruity concoction. He’d then whisk them away to one of his favourite
local restaurants.
He pulled out all the stops, making sure that they experienced “as much of this beautiful territory we live in as possible,” said David. “He always, always, always promoted the BVI.” David recalled his sense of hospitality. “He threw open his doors to visitors and greeted them with a loud, ‘Well hello!’ Everybody he met was made to feel special. He had a quick wit about him.”
With a dry sense of humor and split-second timing, Chuck had the ability to efficiently cut to the crux of a matter. Although Chuck was quick with a joke and could have everybody laughing, it was never at anyone’s expense, but always the weaving of a tale. At heart, he was a gentleman.
Chuck’s legacy
Shortly after Hurricane Irma devastated the BVI in 2017, Chuck attempted to both communicate with his far-flung friends and help keep the wider world informed about the initial recovery efforts.
He began a series of posts called “The Oatmeal Diaries”. While the posts did occasionally reference one of Chuck’s favourite breakfast foods, it really had nothing to do with oatmeal. The posts were about adding a lighthearted twist to something serious. In his September 28, 2017 post, Chuck discussed the swarms of mosquitoes that had descended upon the islands. With his characteristic wit, he wrote:
“One of my Facebook friends suggested I add a bay leaf to my
carton of oatmeal to repel the bugs. Apparently, that solution also works with flour and cornmeal. Who knew?
So, I believe I have a new product suggestion for Quaker. I think they should introduce a special ‘Survival’ variant, with a bay leaf already added to the container.
Quaker Oats: available in Instant, Old Fashioned and Survival varieties. You heard it here first.” Chuck Krallman
In this way, he kept the whole island — and well-wishers all over the world, both informed and entertained.
Even through his health issues in the latter part of his life, Chuck approached these with the same spirit and positivity with which he approached everything else. He tackled everything bravely and became an expert in understanding what he was going through. He kept a core group of friends on a daily chat informed about his medical issues.
“He was the cheerleader,” said Mark. “Every day, he was basically saying, ‘I feel great!’, always putting a positive spin on things.”
The BVI Now App that Chuck created and which his colleagues intend to carry on, is a living, evolving encyclopedia of everything fun, interesting and unique about the BVI.
Chuck set out initially to support BVI businesses following the hurricanes, from restaurants and bars to laundromats and medical clinics. Ultimately, he conceived BVI Now to make it easier for them to
“He exhibited all the positive attributes of the best of humankind,” said David. “He was helpful and gave selflessly in his personal life to tourism in this country. I don’t think that can be measured, it’s so vast.”
offer their services and for people to know where to find them. As the BVI was recovering from the devastation, Chuck threw himself fully into BVI Now.
He pointed out in 2020 that Google Maps still showed a bar called The Bat Cave in Road Town — a bar that burned down about fifteen years prior. After Hurricane Irma, businesses were shown that were no longer there, new businesses had opened that weren’t on the map at all and many businesses had moved temporarily or permanently to different buildings.
“If you ask somebody who lives here, you might get directions like, ‘Get on the Ridge Road and take the third left after where the old boat USED TO BE,’” he wrote.
The storms uncovered a real lack of a central repository of vital information and Chuck ensured the mission of BVI Now would be as an accurate, up-to-date guide for people through good times and bad. Beyond simply being an informative directory, BVI Now can even provide personalized recommendations based on what the user wants to get out of their experience, much the same way Chuck would have done if he were giving a guest his personalized grand tour.
For instance, if you’re passing the Beef Island bridge, you could get a notification of some historical content or an ‘X’ that marks the spot to where pirate treasure was said to have been buried years ago. Or if you’re in Road Town and say you’re in the mood for lobster or conch fritters, BVI Now will direct you to the right establishment, all with no Internet connection or data plan required.
With the BVI Government on board and his associates determined to carry on his legacy with it, the future for BVI Now that Chuck worked so hard on and cared so much about looks bright.
According to David, Chuck’s vision of the future for tourism for the BVI will be realised when more people adopt BVI Now. A Government endorsement has helped, but David said BVI Now has so much more potential. The app that became Chuck’s focus now serves as his legacy, as well as an invaluable tool for tourism in the BVI.
Thanks to Chuck’s dedicated hard work, the islands are more welcoming and accessible through the increasing adoption of this technology. As BVI Now continues, more people visiting the BVI will have a chance to learn from Chuck’s signature warmth, wit and wisdom. •
