Meet the finest of the BVI’s construction experts The team of Nevaeh have extensive experience with projects outside their home, the British Virgin Islands. Each company is recognised for their specific expertise as well as impressive portfolios working on high-end properties.
The focal challenge during the project was the typography of the land. Because the plot is long and narrow—located directly on the beach—the house had to be built in stages from the bottom up, which required special coordination from BCQS to ensure construction ran effectively. What Ben enjoyed about working on this project was that all parties were BVI based, which made coordination and communication simpler, allowing

OBM International BVI Marvin Flax, the managing director of OBM International, along with another three architects from his firm, worked in varied capacities on Nevaeh. Proceeding the initial meeting with the owners to understand their desired vision, OBMI produced concept sketches showing the scale and proportions of the layout, placement on the site in relation to the view, topography and airflow, and used Bali-inspired elements to generate design ideas. Taking these sketches and 3d renderings referred to as ‘schematic design’ the architects kicked into direct communication with the others in the team to get the construction drawings started. OBMI has worked on a vast array of projects and so the process is unique with each client; they have to understand what the client is seeking and if they have a specific concept in mind. Marvin explains that OBMI’s role in Nevaeh was greatly assisted by the professional expertise of Gareth Orchard of ORB, an Anguilla-based contractor. He understood their design intent, successfully applied the Balinese concept per the drawings, and offered workable design solutions when necessary. “OBM International were the design architects for Nevaeh and are extremely proud of the end product. It’s professionally gratifying when your clients are happy and successfully using the space you took from early hand drawn sketches to completion. We enjoyed the process of working with the family along with the team to help achieve their dream home,” said Marvin.
Think Simple BVI Rusty Henderson, the owner of Think Simple BVI, is honoured to have provided simple technological solutions for Nevaeh by offering the experience required to source and contract local professionals in Anguilla. The company installs technological systems using fibre optics including Wi-Fi, telephones, security systems, and entertainment systems. All of the 23 zones of audio sound systems were nestled within the property to remain inconspicuous, and Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and even on the tennis courts. One of the exceptional features in Nevaeh is a private home theatre, as not many homes in the Caribbean contain them. The theatre recreates a VIP cinema experience with reclining leather seats and movies projected on a 120 inch high-definition Black Diamond screen with a cutting-edge surround sound system. Think Simple’s work needs to be considered by all parties involved during the initial design phases, as their systems must be implemented to work with the architecture, furniture, and other features. Rusty commented that he has a huge amount of comfort working with the others involved in the project, as “when you work with the same team, you can rest assured they will take this into consideration and coordinate together smoothly. “We are a group of experts within our specialist fields. One thing that unites us is a common appreciation for what it takes to deliver a result in these remote and challenging locations time after time,” added Rusty.

Poolworks BVI Erick Oeseburg is the principal at Poolworks BVI and the lead designer of intricate swimming pools and spa systems featured in the most prestigious homes and resorts in the Caribbean. The state-of-the-art facility that Poolworks designed is both salt water and heated, with a ‘vanishing edge’ design, and house side perimeter overflow. Stunning hand-crafted aqua-blue glass-tiles by Light Streams Glass Tile were installed to create perfect reflections on the water, as Erick says, “While swimming pools are for leisure, the rest of the day they serve aesthetic purposes, creating ‘mirrors’ in the garden.” A large spa accommodating 12 people featuring jets with remote-controlled settings, is accessible by a ‘wet ramp’ for wheelchairs. A hidden grotto behind a waterfall and a separate small pool area attached from the deck of the master bedroom are two unique features. There are two larger areas for swimming, including a formal pool for relaxation, and a deeper pool suitable for diving. “What we (the team) have developed in the BVI is a group of building professionals that constantly meets and mostly exceeds both local and international building standards. This team can work together rather loosely since their internal drive is to seek perfection. When coupled with a client who seeks absolute quality and exquisite execution, the result is a final product as remarkable as Nevaeh,” said Erick.

Arawak Interiors Roy Keegan, the owner of Arawak Interiors, contributed his knowledge of Balinese architecture and culture to source the perfect custom structural elements unique to Nevaeh, including the wooden pergolas, courtyard posts, and intricate stone carvings featured throughout the property. Although Arawak Interiors is renowned within the BVI for their distinctive furniture, interior décor, and custom designs, Roy was selected to work on this project by OBMI specifically for his contacts in Asia, and ability to work with architectural structures and items. The stone carvings on the panels used in the walkways around the property, feature intricate patterns of leaves and palms which he presented along with many options to the owner’s during the building phases of the house. From 20 years’ experience working in and implementing from Bali and Indonesia, he was familiar with the culture and admired the craftsmanship. He was able to source the finest quality woods and stone for the structures in the villa on two specific trips. “Nevaeh was a great project to work on with the BVI team of building professionals. We all have our businesses based on Tortola and have worked together on various building projects around the Virgin Islands over the past few years. It was great to see the team mobilise further afield and work with each other to deliver another amazing villa, and breaking ground in Anguilla,” said Roy proudly.

Interiors Joan and Associates BVI’s construction experts completed Nevaeh with results exceeding the owners’ expectations. Among these experts was Beth Settles, interior designer at Interiors Joan and Associates, based in Omaha, Nebraska, who contributed to the home’s design details and furnishings. Beth was selected to design and furnish the villa’s interior based on a previous working relationship of over 20 years with the owners, and so she had been brainstorming ideas for the interior since the initial design phases. The colour schemes were chosen by Beth and then presented to the owners who wished to create light ambiance with a Balinese theme. Beth selected

paints with cream and neutral tones, and used turquoise, citron, and jade to match the property’s vistas of the tranquil blue sea. High-end furnishings of the finest quality were chosen to complement the exquisite architecture; most are constructed of native woods such as mahogany and teak, and capable of withstanding the sea salt atmosphere. One of the most exclusive pieces of furniture is the main dining table, made from organic wood displaying the intricate design of the inside of a tree in its ‘live edge’ form, meaning it was cut in its natural state and smoothed down, creating a unique shape. “Being a part of this dream project has been a highlight of my design career. Working with the client and this special group of vendor partners made an already incredible opportunity even better,” said Beth.

Taming the Lion

When I think of tropical vacations, images of beaches, palm trees, fruity drinks, and sunsets come to mind. And, of course, fish. Not only the colourful tropical wildlife that mesmerises us on snorkels and scuba dives, but also the delicious, tasty creations that tantalise our taste buds. Fish are a healthy, flavourful protein that go well with so many foods and wines. A fish that has recently invaded the Caribbean waters, yet not our Caribbean plates, is the lionfish. Native to the Pacific and Indian Ocean, the lionfish knows few predators and therefore has proliferated in abundance. The lionfish are covered in beautiful yet poisonous barbs that fan out just like the mane of a lion. But not to worry – they are simple to catch and filet. Our Captain Ernie of sailing catamaran Lolalita uses a three-prong pole spear and a collection bag to carefully gather as many lionfish as possible, and then uses gloves and tin shears to cut away the dangerous spines. After that, it’s as simple as fileting a ‘normal’ fish. It’s so rare to see lionfish on a Caribbean menu, despite all the wonderful possibilities this delicate, mild, flaky fish offers. Whenever I have the option to try a new means of loving this fish, I always take advantage. Here is one of my absolute favourite ways to enjoy lionfish – a recipe that highlights its wonderfully subtle texture and taste.
Ají Dulce Lionfish Siwichi 1 lb. lionfish filet, diced into ¼ inch pieces 2 ají dulce peppers (or other sweet peppers), diced small 1 green onion sprig, diced small ½ red onion, diced small Handful of fresh tarragon, minced 1 clove garlic, minced 2 tbsp avocado oil Peruvian ají dulce hot sauce ½ cup fresh-squeezed lime juice Salt and pepper

In a large mixing bowl, combine fish, ajà dulce peppers, green onion, red onion, tarragon, garlic, avocado oil, and lime juice. Add in a splash (or more) of Peruvian ajà dulce hot sauce to your spice preference, and set in refrigerator for one hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve chilled, garnish with lime slices and fresh herbs, alongside tortilla chips, pita, fresh bread, or crackers. Serves 6 – 8.

SEA We have currently been trying to raise awareness of another threat which although not as common as tropical storms is every bit as dangerous. That is the threat of a Tsunami, or as we called them in my youth, a tidal wave. We have marked off Tsunami escape routes with signage and conducted Tsunami drills with schools, businesses, and the general public. The reaction has been less than enthusiastic; most people don’t take the threat seriously and scoff at the idea of something like that happening here. But guess what, it already happened and in the chronology of history, it was just yesterday. Tsunami which once again laid waste to the shipping in the harbour of St Thomas and the neighbourhoods of Frenchtown and the first four blocks of Charlotte Amalie. The wave was estimated at 20ft in height and travelled at a high rate of speed. Among the shipping in Charlotte Amalie was the American warship Susquehanna. She was the flagship of a small fleet of U.S naval warships which were on a diplomatic mission to negotiate the purchase of the Danish West Indies by the United States. While talks were being held in Frederiksted, St Croix, the Susquehanna had been dispatched to St Thomas to assist in recovery from the hurricane. It was here she found herself when the great earthquake occurred followed by a 20ft wall of water. Quick thinking by Admiral Palmer saved his ship by resetting his anchor and dropping a second one. They were able to take the wave bow on and survived. Most other ships were not so fortunate and their hulls were left high on the shore. Loss of life was small compared to the hurricane but the economy of the region was devastated and the Americans decided to buy Alaska instead. Another 50 years would pass before the Virgin Islands were turned over to the United States.

As a child, my parents couldn’t force me to eat my vegetables, and when I finally came around to eating them, I gave up certain foods to fight the unfortunate body type I’d been cursed with from genetics. Although I’ve tried and enjoyed cuisine of other cultures, I’d always choose according to my diet. It occurred to me that since I moved to the British Virgin Islands six months ago, I hadn’t sampled much of the local cuisine. I decided to check out D’Coal Pot for an authentic Tortolan dining experience where I intended to try anything the owner, Evelyn Dawson, prepared for me. The emerald-green building is classically-Caribbean in character and situated in a tropical setting among coconut palms in the seaside community of Apple Bay. In trying all D’Coal Pot has to offer, our waitress Vanessa prepared a delicious mixed fruit daiquiri combining the refreshing flavours of strawberry and mango blended with ice. Evelyn shared the story of her

restaurant, from her personal passion cooking in Guayana, to opening D’Coal Pot with her Tortolan husband in October 2013. She proceeded to give us an exclusive tour of the kitchen to see where the magic happens. My guests and I were treated to a spread of eight of D’Coal Pot’s signature dishes. “Everything on our menu, even dishes more commonly enjoyed in the North, have a Caribbean twist,” said Evelyn, who loves their 16oz ribeye steak, done with a home-blended jerk seasoning to give it a unique kick. First, I tried an item on the menu I never would have selected myself: conch in butter sauce. I’m particular when it comes to seafood. I like fish, but nothing with tentacles or an unfamiliar texture, so this was a big step for me. Surprisingly, the texture wasn’t rubbery like I imagined, and the butter sauce was delicious. What appeared to be mashed potatoes accompanying my favourite dish - the curry crusted grouper with mango and passion fruit salsa- was actually called ‘fungi’, a mix of local orka with cornmeal in the shape of spongy mountains The delectable conch fritters, a blend of conch meat with celery, thyme, egg, milk, and breadcrumbs, were especially flavourful. Shamika said they are much fluffier and use less seasoning than most local recipes.

“Curiosity gets the best of me when it comes to food,” chuckled Evelyn, whose special dipping sauce for the fritters is a combination of two recipes learned by her mother-in-law and her cooking mentor, Chef Sinclair. Coconut shrimp, a favourite of our group, is great for those who are not huge shellfish fans, but want to try Caribbean seafood. Their mild fishy taste blends perfectly with the sweet flavour of toasted coconut, paired with a sweet mango-ginger dipping sauce. When dessert came our way, there was no way my sweet tooth could resist the delicious homemade key lime pie, or rich chocolate cake layered with a decadent mousse. Key lime pie is my new found favourite dessert; I love the dense, creamy lime filling surrounded by a delicious brown sugar crust. A special treat came right at the end of the meal when Evelyn brought out an authentic clay coal pot, used in traditional Caribbean kitchens. Although it is inefficient to use this method in modern restaurants, Evelyn hopes to host an event where soup will be cooked using a real coal pot. Experiencing authentic Tortolan cuisine in a true local setting was incredible. In the near future, D’Coal Pot will be closing at its current location, and reopening in place of her mother-in-law’s restaurant in Carrot Bay. It will be renamed D’Coal Pot at Palms Delight. There is no doubt my family will be treated to a meal at D’Coal Pot when they visit at Christmas.
