Food Review: The Cattledog Faith Simcox A Staff Reporter Food Review

You know where Quizno’s used to be? Right next to Super Cuts and O’Reilly’s? Well, now that place is a little pizza place called Cattledog. We all know we probably rolled our eyes when we heard that Ellensburg was aquiring yet another pizza joint, but honestly this one is tops down the yummiest pizza joint in town. Walking in, you instantly feel a homey vibe. There’s lovely indie pop playing in the back and the smell of the pizza isn’t like other pizza places in town. It’s sweet and exciting. The whole aura in the entire building couldn’t be any more appealing. And the people are incredibly nice! The lovely man who helped me didn’t make me feel unwelcomed like some places do. He made small talk, smiled a lot, and even made sure that I had everything that I needed before I even sat down to eat. I decided to order their pizza “The Cattledog,” which has chicken, sausage, BBQ drizzle, mozzarella cheese, banana peppers, and red onions. However, I had my vegetarian friend with me, so we took off the meat and added some mushrooms. The smell of the pizza was

Cattledog’s very own “Cattledog” one thing, but the flavors were just out of this world. Who knew BBQ sauce on pizza would be good? And that crust is to die for!! It’s soft and thin and has the most exquisite taste ever. However, their menu is very small, with only four actual pizzas on the menu and a few other things like salads and sandwiches. I was quite bummed, but then I was gladly introduced to their very new menu that has several different options. They are growing quick. And the prices are honestly to die for. There is only one size for pizza, and the price ranges from how many toppings you have on the pizza. For mine, that filled both

my friend and I up with some even being left over, it only cost just a little over $6 plus tax. I would rate the Cattledog a solid 9 out of 10. So go get yourself some Cattledog pizza, I promise it’ll meet up to all of your wildest dreams.

Kavanaugh Update

Allison A Michael Staff Reporter

Brett Kavanaugh is now officially our ninth Supreme Court Justice. In our last edition of the Alutant I reported on my thoughts about Kavanaugh’s nomination for the country’s ninth justice. Kavanaugh was sworn in on Saturday, October 6 and was voted in by a vote of 50 to 48 in his favor. Later that evening he was sworn in at the White House where President Donald Trump addressed Kavanaugh and his family. At the ceremony Trump took a chance to apologize to Kavanaugh and his family on his behalf.

Trump said that everything Dr. Christine Basely Ford, the accuser, did was an act of “evil” and believed that it was all “false charges. False accusations.” Trump also went on to say the following about the accuser, “Horrible statements that were horribly untrue that he knew nothing about. Frankly, terms that he probably never heard in his life. He was this, he was that, he never even heard of these terms. It was a disgraceful situation brought about by people who were evil. And he toughed it out” (CBS News). Kavanaugh is now the newest addition to the Supreme Court Justices and with him,

Teens Against Drug Use:

5

The rebranding of a club

The TAPS (Teens Against Pot Smoking) club has been at Ellensburg High School for a few years now, but due to a loss of funds statewide, the students involved decided to rename it to the TADU (Teens Against Drugs Use) club. This change will allow them to not be affiliated with the greater TAPS organization as well as allow the club to broaden its horizons and take on even more topics. Stuart A AvaProducer

This is a certificate that recognizes our 2017-18 TAPS club as finalists.

Dawn Bass, Student Assistant Specialist (SAS), has been with the school district for four years and the advisor of the TAPS club for three years. While she has worked with the school district, Bass is actually employed by Merit Resource Services. It is a nonprofit organization founded in 1979 that focuses on helping people deal with drug and alcohol dependency. Bass’ job is to connect students with the resources they need to be healthy, whether the presenting issue is mental, physical, substanceabuse related, or something else. Bass believes that the club should be student driven and says, “The students come up with the ideas and my role is to help find a way to carry them out.” Historically, the TAPS club has mainly focused on prevention aspects. They had multiple campaigns that the TAPS curriculum would require them to fulfill. When asked about his thoughts on the club broadening its focus beyond only pot smoking, Vice Principal, Beau Snow was encouraging,

“They will be able to serve a pretty similar function but it may help the dialogue stretch into other things.” Snow also expressed his support for the club by saying, “Anybody that is working on cutting down drug use in teens is moving the needle in the right direction.” Melissa Lopez, (junior at EHS) is the former secretary of the TAPS club and current President of the TADU club. She has been involved in the club for three years and is very enthusiastic about the work that they do. Lopez said that a typical meeting includes catching up as well as planning activities and food drives to support non-profits. Her favorite part of the club has been participating in a competition at the Great Wolf Lodge against fifty other schools. In order to go to the competition, each school must be invited, and fill out a grant application. At the competition, the schools compete with six to eight other schools. Each group must create an eightminute presentation that includes information about what they have done over the year, and how they are making a bigger difference than another school. They also include what they plan to do throughout the rest of the year. A school must win the room to go on to the next level of competition on the big stage in front of all fifty schools. Last year EHS students won their room and placed second out of all fifty schools. They were able to do so with a minimal amount of

help from their advisor. Bass only served as their timekeeper and offered critiques during practice. The Ellensburg High School TADU club has been able to do many other fantastic things as well, such as working on local and global campaigns. This year alone, they will be doing at least five campaigns, with some benefitting our local FISH food bank and others benefiting impoverished countries. If you have any questions about what the TADU club will be doing this year or want to get involved, talk to Melissa Lopez. They meet on Fridays at a random table in the lunchroom. The work that they do would be an amazing opportunity to be a part of. So if you would like an opportunity to help people, the TADU club gives anyone the opportunity.

This bracelet is part of a campaign called We Rafiki where they sell them. The money is donated to charity.

Homecoming 2018

A

Jada Godwin & Miguel Cruz Staff Reporters

It was that time of year again where kids dress up, grab a date and boogie. Homecoming is always a big topic among students and every year there is a big controversy about many things. Suddenly everyone becomes a critic after the dance, even though everyone in the end did a great job. Here are some of the reviews from EHS students. 1.What did you like about homecoming and why? 2.What did you dislike about homecoming and why? 3.What do want to see change for the next dances? 4.What rating would give the dance, scale 1-10? Patrick Adkisson “Got to hangout with friends, I guess.” “Waiting in line for an hour. Super crowded, music was okay.” “Maybe have more people to check in so the lines goes by faster. It was super crowded, music was okay.” “Probably a solid 6 ½.” Tait Morris “The lights were cool, loud. Speakers were good.” “Music choice was outdated. No rap. Sounded like a “Rave” and not a dance.” “Different music directed towards our generation.” “2 ½” Nolan Meyer “The time before and after the dance. “Music was bad, too much bass drop, too dubstep.” “Better music and screen needs to go

Teachers would walk up and mark your hand. It was crowded also.” “More music, more space. I understand that staff, but don’t like it. “My first one ever, so i’ll say 7.”

Annie Schlanger

Shannon Nolan “There was a lot of bass! But it was pretty good music, the remixes were all very good and they blended fairly well together. It was a good night overall, the concessions were great, a dollar everything, would recommend. I ate too many Snickers and by too many I mean two. Thank you Mark and goodnight.” Collin Marsh “The music was great- I liked it, it was good and overall it was really fun and a good time.”

Drew Bland Collin Marsh

Annie Schlanger “It was pretty good, it was better than past dances because I knew more songs, but I would have liked to hear Yo No Fui and Sweet Caroline and perhaps Country Road as well.” Drew Bland “The dance was pretty good, the lights and music were entertaining and this dance is probably one of the best ones so far for me.” Valentyna Belofsky “The dance was really great, the music was like pretty average, you know, just like typical dance music. They should have thrown in a few more slow songs, but it was really fun and everyone seemed to be in a really good mood.”

Sports -Worth The Risk? Jeremy May A Social Media Manager Sports

Student athletes risk injury every day

For every sport there is a risk of injury. Year after year High School athletes continue to get hurt either with small or extensive recovery times. No matter what the injury is, it also affects how they do in their acedemic lives. How have injuries affected the school and sport life of EHS students? Joe Davis, a three sport varsity athlete, had Patellar Tendonitis which turned into Tendinopathy. Davis said, “ I went through all of the track season, got 9th at state in long jump with a torn Patellar Tendon.” Without knowing that he had seriously injured himself. For recovery he had to have surgery on August 6th. While also having go through physical therapy. This injury also interferes with schooling. Davis added, “ I have to take the elevator, or I’m often late to class. And I can’t take a strength class.” You can still see him walking the halls in a full leg brace. Another athlete used to play at a highly competitive level of soccer. Due to repetitive concussion, he had to stop playing contact sports. Fisher BachmanRhodes had three major concussions. “ The first time I took a direct cross to the head and almost passed out. Second time I got elbowed in the back of my head during a game.” Fisher was then out of the game for a long time trying to recover. With concussions there is not

a lot to do, but lay in a dark room, trying to get rest. Fisher then adds how he recovered from the head trauma with “ lots of rest. Not only physical rest but mental as well, so homework was an issue.” Fishers schooling is still being affected by the long lasting damage. Fisher exclaims “ most recently I just had a hard time processing information like I used to. Especially foreign language and math”. With not being able to play a contact sport, he has now joined

cross-country and other clubs at school. After all, is playing a high school sport worth it? High school athletes account for an estimated 2 million injuries, 500,000 doctor visits, and 30,000 hospitalizations each year. Injuries associated with participation in sports and recreational activities account for 21 percent of all traumatic brain injuries among teens in the united states alone. Take into fact that only a little over 7 percent of high school players go on to play in college and only 2 percent go on to play at NCAA Division 1 schools. For the rest of the high school athletes who play, they run the increasingly high risk of getting injured and possibly having that injury impacted them for the rest of their life.

LaCroix Is Sued For Cockroach Insecticide Found Inside Have You Been can have a pleasant smell- or to enjoyable smells. Drinking Poison? maskThelessthree chemicals listed in

A

Jada Godwin Staff Reporter

The beginning of October came with many things- the season of Halloween and Homecoming, the PSATs and the start of many new clubs, among other things. But with all of that, we found out that one for our favorite drinks allegedy contains chemicals we don’t want to be digesting. On October 1, LaCroix was sued for containing Linalool, Limonene, and Linalyl Proprionate (identified as Linalool Proprionate in the lawsuit), therefore not being “100% natural”. And yet all three of the ingredients mentioned in the lawsuit can be extracted from natural sources. Limonene is found in citrus fruit peels such as lemons and oranges. Linalyl Proprionate comes from kumquats, a small citrus like fruit, and has been tested as a possible inhibitor of prostate cancer. The chemical is also found in ginger, lavender, cinnamon, rosewood, and sage oils. Linalool is present in more than 200 species of plants, and is used most commonly as a scent and spice. Which brings us to the lawsuit. Linalool is an aromatic oil often found in cockroach insecticide. However, it is not the active ingredient in the insecticide. Linalool Propionate isn’t what makes the insecticide toxic to the insects, it’s just added so that the product

the lawsuit are known as “aroma compounds.” That means that they can escape the product and waft up toward your nose. For example, if you squeeze an orange or grate a lime it will release limonene, which you can then smell. National Beverage, the parent company of LaCroix, said in a statement that “Natural flavors in LaCroix are derived from the natural essence oils from the named fruit used in each of the flavors. There are no sugars or artificial ingredients contained in, nor added to, those extracted flavors”. Two of the compounds that the lawsuit alleges are in the drink, Limonene and Linalool, are “widespread in nature and the foods and beverages that people are consuming already.” At a certain level, the compounds could be toxic. Similar to the lead in our water, there’s a certain limit up to which certain chemicals can be considered safe. While it’s unclear what level of concentration of these aroma chemicals is found in these drinks, it would be considered within the safe zone. If the concentration is too high, the can would smell intensely of perfume when opened, instead of the normal seltzer water smell. But if the concentration is low enough, there is no health risks. So drink your LaCroix. It won’t kill you... yet.

Tippy Top Ten Video Games Of 2018 A

Steven Szombathy Staff Reporter Review Video games are massively popular around the world, so naturally people make lists of the best titles of the year or of all time. So here it is the top 10 games of 2018 so far. These games will be in no particular order. Only games released in 2018 will be on the list, no exceptions, so no Fortnite which was released in 2017.

Number 10. Sea of Thieves Teen

YA WANNA BE A PIRATE? Me too. When Sea of Thieves was released in March, it took the world by a moderately strong gust of wind with exceptional graphics and somewhat interesting game play. Sea of Thieves puts you in the boots of a pirate who sails around the vast sea alone or with friends collecting treasure, fighting skeletons, and fighting players.

Number 9. Subnautica E10

Subnautica quite literally drops you into an alien world that is 98% water and it is up to you to not die by the oceans many vicious sea creatures and rocket off world. Swim through the massive beautifully under sea world collecting materials to build your base and sea vehicles. With smooth graphics and challenging gameplay, it makes you feel like you're actually on an alien planet and it’s generally a good open world survival game with many things that will leave you wondering “what in the world did that”.

Number 8. God of War 4 Mature

Kratos decided to peace out of Greece and jumped on into Norse Mythology with his son, Boy... I mean, Atreus. You two run around the vast world beating monsters and solving puzzles and finding answers to mysteries you never knew existed. Once again the graphics are steller and the story is intriguing. The game earns its keep as a God of War title

Number 7. Detroit Become Human Mature

There are no words in existence to describe how great this game is. It’s one of those games that can be taken in a couple different ways depending how you look at or play the game. Some people view it as a commentary on racism others see it as what happens when you give a robot the ability to think. But no matter how you look at it it is still a stunning game with three different storylines that intersect and change as you play depending on the decisions you make.

Number 6. Dragon Ball Fighter Z

Anime screaming simulator or Dragon Ball Fighter Z as the creators and fans call it puts you in the shoes of your favorite Dragon Ball characters including Goku, Gohan, Trunks, Piccolo, Vegeta, the androids, Cell, Frieza and a bunch of other characters from the DBZ lineup. You put them in a fight ranging from 1v1 to 3v3 and punch, kick, and button mash your way to victory. The game is pretty slick using a new engine for its anime style graphics and a great combo system.

Number 5. Shadow of the Colossus Remake Teen

These aren't Hajime Isayama titans, they are so much cooler. A remake of the classic Shadow of The Colossus released in 2005 it puts you in the shoes of a little lad trying to wake a princess from an eternal sleep and how you have to do that is eliminating all of the colossus by strikeing specific spots on their bodies. Out of all the games on this list, this one has by far some of the best graphics as pieces of clothing hair and fur interacts with the massive open worlds wind mechanic.

Number 4. We Happy Few Mature

Drugs are bad and if you don’t believe that this game will make you believe. During WW2 in an alternate universe FDR was assassinated and Britain was left to fight Germany on its own. They won but only by doing something only known as “the very bad thing.” The guilt and sadness caused by the bad thing caused people to start doing bad things, so the government gave civilians a mind

altering drug called “Joy.” Your character does not want Joy but the cops want you to have the Joy so you have to run for your life and get the heck out of Dodge.

Number 3. Monster Hunter Worlds Teen

Dragons, dinosaurs, talking cats, big world, yay. Monster Hunter Worlds takes time and grit and it pays off well, the world is massive and full of old and new monsters all wanting to eat you for lunch. As with the rest of the games on the list this game has stunning graphics and amazing gameplay.

Number 2. Dark Souls Remastered Mature

Death is your new friend because in this game you do it a lot. Developers From Software put a new coat of polish on the original Dark Souls and it pays off well. Like every Dark Souls game the fire is going out and it’s up to you to rekindle the flames and restore light to the land. Grab your broken sword and busted shield because the enemies in the game want to break you both physically and mentally.

Number 1. Spider Man Teen

Is there anything I really have to say about this game? It speaks for itself. With a smooth transition between gameplay and cutscene, it’s almost like you’re playing a Spider Man movie. Not only that but the web swinging mechanic that was a huge problem in previous Spider Man games has been solved. And the skill tree and unlockable suits, suit powers, and gadgets will have you trying out different combinations for at least a month. And what every Spider Man game needs, a call back to the pizza delivery minigame from Spider Man 2. There you go, the top 10 games released so far in 2018. Kind of a hard list to make as so many games were released in the past 10 months, but these are the ones that stood out the most.
