Lunar Dance Eclipsed by Administrative Rules Imani Alexander A Editor in Chief Feature

On January 25, yearbook had to cancel the after game Lunar Dance. This was the first dance canceled this year. There were not enough ticket sales sold the week before to keep the doors open. However many students were upset that the dance could not be held. “I feel like we should have been able to sell more by Friday” said Taya Bugni, head editor of the Klahim yearbook, who was sponsoring the dance. “The biggest reason that the dance was cancelled is because not enough tickets were sold by the time they needed to be,” reported Haley Naboychick, activities director. When holding a dance, clubs must have 150 tickets sold by the

Wednesday prior to the dance minimum. Before the Lunar Dance was canceled, only 107 tickets had been sold. Tickets can be sold at the door, but the administration does not rely on this. “We can’t count on tickets getting sold at the door.” Naboychik said, pointing out that the school needs to know who plans to attend the dance ahead of time. One of the reasons for requiring a minimum number of students is awkwardness. The administrators don’t want to throw a dance and only have 40 or 50 people. Naboychik explained that having low turnout increases a boring or just bad experience. Administration hopes to negate those possibilities by requiring a higher attendance rate. A second reason for this pol-

3

icy is chaperones. The amount of chaperones there is dependant on the amount of student attendance. If there are only 50 students and 10 chaperones, that would be uncomfortable for everyone involved. “I feel like there should have been a clearer line of communication between the administration and the yearbook class.” Bugni said, after the local dance was canceled. The administration policy is an important one for all club officers to be aware of when preparing to host a dance. If EHS students want to make sure dances occur regularly, they need to buy tickets ahead of time. Tolo will be March 9, here at EHS in the commons. Tickets will be $20 for a couple or $12 for an individual. They will go on sale on March 4.

Ellensburg High School’s basketball played Selah for a CWAC championship game. It was senior night for the Bulldogs. The winner of the match would not only win the 2A title but would also have a by for the first round of districts. Ellensburg fought hard trying to stop Elijah Pepper, Selah’s top point scorer. Within the first 10 points of the game, Steele Venters dropped Calvin Herting to the ground in the corner. To add insult to injury Steele then hit a three pointer standing over him, increasing the lead for the Bulldogs. The game was tight the whole time. With little time left on the clock, Wyatt Franklin was fouled and had to shoot two free throws, clutching the game by making both of his

shots. The final score of the game was 78-79 Ellensburg. Throughout the game there were some pretty questionable calls with the referees blowing the game more than their whistles, and Selah players flopping more than a fish out of water. Steele Venters would have had one of the biggest dunks of the year, nearly dunking over another player. Sadly, his dunk was called back for a charge. Davis Grant has been making a presence for the Ellensburg basketball team, shrugging off early three pointers. Ellensburg wrestler Henry Rinehart has also been destroying the competition this year. Henry has been wrestling for nine years and won the

Intramural Basketball

Jeremy May A Social media Manager Sports

Have you ever wanted to play an organized game of basketball but don’t want to practice everyday after school? Do you want to play with all your friends and have some fun? Intramural basketball is played every Wednesday agents other teams in the High school gyms. “It was something that is different than stuff I normally do and my friends were also” said Lauren Favero. Playing a sport for the

high school can be intimidating, while playing 35 minute games is full of funny moments for you and your team of at least five or more friends. Alongside having fun playing with friends it is a great way to stay in shape during the cold winter season. There are around 10 different teams that play each year. One team being the staff team. People from all kinds of sports backgrounds come together for the fun of the sport. “Everyone is just there to have a good time with their friends so if you mess up its OK” said Favero. The whole purpose of IBA is for people to have

5

fun and be with friends in school. IBA is run by Mr. Teasley and players from the high school basketball team ref the games. The very last game of IBA is a jamboree where all the teams play a loser out tournament until there is one team left crowning them the winners of the IBA season. If you are looking for a way to hang out with your friends and be involved in a school activity, then I recommend giving IBA a shot.

Solo and Ensemble Results

Ava Stuart Producer News Brief

Ellensburg High School tends to do pretty well at the yearly Solo and Ensemble. This year is not unlike others. Vocally, Ellensburg High School students took first place in the Mezzo Soprano (Lindsey Packard), Tenor (Nicholas Gleed), Bass (Soren Lundquist), Small Women’s Ensemble (Tanya Alvarado, Raven

DiMaggio, and Madi Lubanski), and Small Mens Ensemble category (Kyle Nolan and Orion Walker). Out of the 12 categories, this means that EHS was able to take first place in 5 of them. Raven DiMaggio (Mezzo Soprano), James Kirkham (Tenor), Ava Stuart and Elaina Johnson (Small Women’s Ensemble), and the Chamber Choir Women (Large Womens Ensemble) were also able to take second place. In Orchestra there are fewer categories but ours still did exceptionally well. Taliesin Tenerelli took first place in the Guitar category and Payton Harvill took first in String Bass.

Some of the kids on the Choir Bus to the competition

These numbers don´t even account for all of the wonderful students who placed after second and did extremely well too. There were over 60 entries from the EHS Choir and Orchestra combined. Regardless of the results, each and every student that participated worked hard and had a performance that reflected that effort. Overall, it is clear that we have many talented students at Ellensburg High School. Keep a look out for the upcoming band Solo and Ensemble results which took place on the 10th of February. I am sure that they will be impressive as well.

It is life’s greatest pleasure to know you.

You mean so much more to me than anyone else in this school. You have been with me since third grade, I hope you understand how much I truly care about you. You’re my best friend, love ya!

VALENTINE’S LOVE MOVIE

Whether you’re with a significant other, your best friend, your cat, or even just yourself, love movies are a hit on Valentine’s Day. However, when it comes to picking out a movie, there’s many to pick from. So which movie is the best to watch on a day like this? It definitely depends on the person, but here’s a good flash to the past. We all fell head over heels for the romance between actors Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles in their roles of Patrick and Kat in “10 Things I Hate About You.” This movie is a good blast back to 1999. Young Patrick Verona gets paid to take out Kat Stratford so the high school hot

shot, Joey Donner, can get a chance at her little sister, Bianca. Patrick and Kat are two unlikely characters. Patrick is the bad boy of the show, the one every kid at school fears. Kat is the usual smart aleck that no boy goes for and every teacher wants to kick out of class. As the show plays on, a love connection happens between the two, causing them to do ridiculous things for each other. Like paying the marching band to play on the school football field and singing “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” to get the girl. This movie is full of drama, humor, and of course all the love that you could possibly get. You just can’t help but fall in

love with this quirky movie. Even if you’ve seen this movie a hundred times over or never at all, it is definitely one to snuggle up on the couch and watch while stuffing your face with junk food on this lovey -dovey holiday.

Chocolate Review

Symphony Bars

Made by Hersey’s, Symphony bars are one of the better chocolate bars to buy for the one you are interested in for not too much money. They are the perfect combination of creamy but with enough of the break to get the satisfaction you are looking for in a well crafted chocolate bar. They contain enough chocolate to justify buying one.

Kit Kat

Olivia Anderson A Staff Reporter Review

Lindt

Lindt chocolate, in general, is such an amazing brand. From their Easter candy, to their bars, all the way to truffles. They have perfected the recipe for chocolate. If you really want to impress the one you’re eyeing this is the way to do it. Lindt is a little more expensive compared to your average sellers but you are guaranteed to wow your interest.

Kit kats are relatively good. If your crush likes wafers I recommend these breakable bits of goodness. One normal package is usually enough for me so if your significant other is a relatively small person and cares about their diet you’re in luck for buying these wonderful sugar packed rectangles of chocolate and wafer. They also have good flavors.

Lindt Lindor Truffles We are now back on Lindt. If you couldn’t tell by know I really enjoy Lindt candies. Though these little balls of chocolate cream are rather pricey. The price is all worth it when you break the outer shell and get a taste of that delicious cream that seems to melt at the touch. Whether or not your interest likes chocolate or not they will be grateful for these.

13

Ghirardelli

Many people enjoy this brand of chocolate, but in my opinion they aren’t great. I am a sugar addict so my opinion might not be worth it for this brand. Whenever I take a bite of these little expensive squares I feel as though there is a slight tinge of plastic and ink. The only one that is remotely good is their dark chocolate.

Almond Roca

These are one of my favorite candies if I am wanting to break a tooth. Logs with plenty of sweet sugary layers. Almonds, chocolate, with a hard caramel center. A very delicious candy. If the one you’re looking at has braces I would not buy these, they will break a bracket in the matter of seconds. You have been warned.

www.flickr.com

Nestle

Nestle is the chocolate that you would give to someone you kind of like. Someone that you don’t know if you can develop a full crush on them yet but you still want to get them candy without spending too much. This brand does make decent candy for not too much money. So if you don’t want candy commitment I would suggest this brand.

Frangos

These are the candy everybody dreams of. There are many flavors including pomegranate and peppermint and many more that I cannot list because I cannot remember. These little flavored chocolate bricks are perfect for chocolate connoisseur that you want to impress. They also aren’t horribly expensive. So, out of all of these, Frangos are my favorite.

A Cut Above: The Meaning of Flowers

Steven Szombathy A Staff Reporter Review

It’s Valentine’s day and most people probably want to get their special someone a special bunch of flowers. But potential lovers need to be careful because the flower they choose might mean something different than what they originally thought. So here’s a quick guide to the meaning of flowers. The rose comes in a variety of colors, the most well known rose is the legendary red rose which is known as a symbol of love/ profess-

ing your love and passion. A lavender rose is love at first sight. Yellow means friendship as well as a promise of new beginnings. The peony flower is another flower or romance along with prosperity. Gladiolus is a flower that means strength and integrity. You could pair this flower with a rose to show your strong undying love for your significant other. Or maybe your relationship is new and you don’t want to go too fast. You could go out and pick some daisies as a symbol of innocence

(then give them a quick kiss on the cheek. It’ll be cute, trust me). A freesia is the ultimate flower of trust - pair this with a Chrysanthemum which symbolizes loyalty. This will make the perfect bouquet that states trust. But what if you really don’t have a significant other but someone you want to express your eternal broship? A yellow rose along with Geraniums are symbols of friendship. Sprinkle in some bluebells for kindness and you got yourself the ultimate bro bouquet. Now you have some tips on how to make the ultimate bouquet for someone have a wonderful Valentines day.

other relationships. They don’t have to be romantic; in fact the best relationships to focus on in this case would be family relationships. How much time have you actually spent out with your family? Feel free to be weird, do something that makes you happy. Go perform karaoke, have a paintball battle, go play an outrageous game of DnD. Live a little- it really doesn’t matter. If you’re newly single don’t try and immediately get a new partner. The best thing to do is to spend some time thinking about yourself. You’ve spent weeks, months, maybe even years worrying and thinking about someone else, it’s about time you have some you time. You probably have a whole

slew of emotions running through your head and it may be confusing. You’re going to have to separate all of them out, whether its by yourself or with someone else. Your mental state should be your number one priority. If you find someone that you really like, don’t be afraid to tell them how you feel. The worst they could do is say that they don’t feel the same way, and more than likely if they do then you can still be total bros. The final tip I have for you is: Make mistakes. You are young and are far from perfect which is okay. Everyone messes up, so use your mistakes as a learning opportunity and have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.

Single Tips: Valentines When Alone

Steven Szombathy A Staff Reporter Advice Column

So, I heard that you’re single, but not quite ready to mingle. Are you just not ready to date yet, or are you just new to being single? First, you should recognize that it’s okay to be single. You may have told yourself that you only matter when you’re in a relationship. This thought has probably run through your head once or twice. Well, it’s false. Whether you just got out of relationship or you’ve never been in one before. Don’t feel pressured to because here is nothing wrong with being single and before you focus on someone else you should focus on yourself. Also, it is important to foster
