Students Outraged: North Parking Lot Confusion A Olivia Anderson Staff Reporter Editorial
Over the past school year there has been one big controversy involving the students of Ellensburg High School and the administration. This big subject, that the school has not addressed to its fullest extent, is the closing of the North Parking Lot. The closing of the parking lot made it so that students had to get creative with their parking. This involves parking in staff parking, parking in the back of the school and walking to the front, parking in handicapped parking spots, or parking in motorcycle parking. It has even gone so far that students aren’t finding parking spots. This includes along the islands in the parking lot and in “no parking” spots. These actions are punished by students volunteering to hand out tickets during their free pe-
riod. Although it does not appear to, tickets are constantly being handed out. They are given to students who park improperly, students without valid parking stickers, and students who park in non-parking spots, along with handicapped parking spots and motorcycle parking. The only reason the parking lot is currently open now is actually because of the snow. When it “opened”, it was not the school allowing us to park there, but a student who slid on the ice and accidentally broke the gate. Otherwise, it would still be closed, though they were considering opening it because of the snow covering parking lines. In actuality, the parking lot was never intended to be student parking. According to Neil Musser, the parking lot was intended for bus transfer, visitor parking, staff parking, athletic

use, and evening use. “We closed it for a couple of different reasons. There was enough parking at the time for students to access the main lot. We also closed it because of driving and parking issues that we were having in the north lot,” according to Musser. Most of the irritation by this change is due to the fact that what we, as students, are seeing is that the eight staff members that park in the North Parking Lot are more important than the students attendance and arrival time. Mainly, students have reported being late on several occasions because they could not find a spot in the main parking lot. This affects them greatly. To students whose classes start in five minutes and spend ten minutes driving around looking for a place to park and an extra two to walk to the school, this policy sets them up to be seven minutes late. It seems that the school does not care. On the upside, there is a parking plan being settled for the next year, possibly towards the end of this year. That plan is to fix to gate to the north parking lot and close it off once again. Another plan is to have designated spots in the North Parking Lot for seniors who maintain good grades, and who also have no parking violations or behavior issues.

Letter to the Editor Considering Consent
Dear Alutant staff, I recently picked up a copy of your Valentine’s day issue. The editorial stunned me- consent is a tricky and sensitive issue. However, for the most part, it was addressed well and with accurate information. My issue comes from the sixteenth paragraph, which I will quote for you now: “The rules become more complicated with people under 16, but essentially 14-15 year olds can give consent to people less than 4 years older than them, 12-13 year olds can give consent to people less than 3 years older than them, and people under 12 can give consent if their partner is less than 2 years older than them. This information is not fully correct. According to Title 9A, Chapter 44 of the Revised Code of Washington (Specifically RCW 9A.44.073, RCW 9A.44.076, RCW 9A.44.079, RCW 9A.44.83, RCW 9A.44.86, RCW 9A.44.89, 9A.44.93 and 9A.44.96), It is only legal to have intercourse with a partner if you both have the age difference described in the article and are married to your significant other that you are having intercourse with, otherwise the older of the pair could be charged with up to first degree child molestation, a class A felony. I would respectfully like to request that you issue a correction to the article that was published today, as the (presumably unintentional) misinformation present could cause a host of legal problems for a minor who has no other knowledge on the subject of consent. Thank you. Respectfully, James Kirkham
Editorial Reply Thank you for sending in a letter about this article. We always appreciate feedback on our work and any corrections that should be made to improve our publication. As advocates for student voice, we will always do our best to publish and share every letter sent to us. Since consent is such a important and tricky, it seemed fitting to reply in this case. After going through the points that you made and thoroughly going through the laws, we concluded that the original statements had been correct. The article was researched using laws directly from the Washington State Department of Health, specifically from Title 9a, Chapter 44 of the Revised Code of Washington. These laws included the ones you cited. For a more straightforward article I have only used the laws pertaining to children under 12 years old, simply because it is the age group that is first mentioned in the Revised Code of Washington. The laws are worded the exact same for the other age groups, with the exception of the age ranges involved. You stated that the minor, a child under 18 years old, must be married to their partner to give legal consent in sexual circumstances. I can see where a misunderstanding could occur. When I first looked at the RCW 9A.44.073, the law describing what rape of a child in the first degree consists of, I also had trouble understanding the full constituents of what would consists as rape and what as consent. However, marriage does not play a role in consensual sexual activity. The wording is extremely important here. RCW 9A.44.073 Rape of a child in the first degree. Intramural Basketball Championships

The season has been wrapped up for Intramural Basketball. There were a lot of fun times and good laughs for everyone on the court, from watching Tyler Martin pants people, to the staff team killing other teams with crazy moves. This years champions were Nick Jewell, Ryan Stinson, Liam Lavalley, Mike Nelson, Bryton Wilson, Garrett Mullings, Sim Wilson and Branden. These guys are a group of Juniors that always are shooting hoops at lunch or during open gym. “I enjoy playing basketball but I didn’t want to make a commitment to practice and travel and all that stuff,” Nick Jewell said when asked why he plays IBA. This year there were ten teams that participated in the sport. This year’s winners only lost three games, two of those being the staff team. “When we won the championship, I jumped on Mike and basically tackled him to the ground.” Nick said that their team wins came from their teamwork and how they all wanted to win. Ryan on the other hand said, “We had Nick and the man is an unstoppable force.” When

Most high school athletes hope to play their sport after graduation. Unfortunately for a lot of us, we don’t get the opportunity to. This year’s senior class has a bunch of students who have signed to play in college. Steele Venters is a senior who has been playing basketball his whole life. He has the chance to continue to play past high school. Steele is leaning towards playing basketball for Eastern Washington University, but is still trying to decide where he wants to play. He has gotten offers from Saint Martins, Central Washington, Hawaii Hilo, and Alaska Fairbanks. “I’m super excited to go play basketball at a higher level and meet new people.” Steele said. Schools have come out and watched him play over the last couple of years. He has been working hard on being versatile. “You don’t see guys my size that can shoot the ball and dribble very much.” Steele is going to study ac-

counting at whatever school he goes to. He hopes after college that he can continue to play either here in the U.S. or overseas. Jadon Bugni is a senior who has signed to play baseball for Washington State. “I have great people and friends around me who really push me to be better all year long.” said Jadon. Jadon has been playing select baseball, traveling around and meeting with coaches. Washington State watched him play and decided that he has what it takes to play at a high level. “I have talked to a few pro organizations about being drafted after high school but I will wait till after college and then think about taking an offer if it’s right.” Jadon plans on studying communications or athletic training while he attends Washington State. Tia Andaya is a senior who has signed to play volleyball at Gonzaga. Tia has been playing volleyball since she was nine years old. Tia has been a starter on the high school volleyball team since she was a freshman. “I had started to see interests from other schools earlier on so if anything it pushed me.” said Tia. Having colleges talk to her only made her work harder and continue to get better. She is not sure what she is going to study while she attends Gonzaga but she has time

to think before she attends. Tyler Polacek is another senior that plays baseball. Tyler has signed to play baseball at Columbia Basin College. CBC has come to watch Tyler play while he has played club and during the high school season. It’s no surprise to see some of the baseball boys getting drafted to play in college since they have won the state title the last two years in a row. “Made me feel like my hard work is finally paying off.” Tyler said. Tyler plans on studying Biology in college. Conner Timko is a senior soccer player who has signed to play for Embry Riddle. Conner has been playing soccer ever since he could walk. He has played for numerous teams over his soccer career. Conner is a goalie for the high school team. He plans on continuing studying Aviation. With all the good players on the roster, this year is the year for the high school soccer program to win a state title.

The National Emergency

In 1976, Congress passed the National Emergencies Act, giving the president the ability to declare a national emergency as they see fit. Over 100 special powers can be granted to the sitting president.
Since the act passed, there have been almost 60 national emergencies according to the White House Administration, with 31 of these still in affect today. According to a White House fact sheet, Trump declared a national emergency on February 15th to address concerns at the southern border over immigration and border security. He put two special powers into effect with his declaration: 10 U.S.C. § 12302 authorizes Department of Defense (DOD) officials to order the Ready Reserve to active duty to address a national emergency. 10 U.S.C. § 2808 authorizes the Secretary of Defense to direct military construction necessary to support the use of the Armed Forces in connection with a “national emergency… that requires use of the armed forces”. The longest government shutdown in US history recently occurred during Trump’s administration, forcing govern-
ment officials and park rangers to either work without pay or be sent home for 35 days. He has been cited saying that he did so to gain full funding from Congress for building a border wall, $5.7 billion of taxpayer money. Congress eventually passed a spending bill to end the shutdown, allotting $1.375 billion, specially for 55 miles of bollard fencing, to the Trump Administration. “I didn’t need to do this. But I’d rather do it much faster,” stated Trump according to an official White House transcript when talking about the national emergency. A senior administration official said that $1.375 billion will be pulled from the Homeland Security appropriations bill, $600 million from the Treasury Department’s drug forfeiture fund, $2.5 billion from the Department of Defense’s drug interdiction program, and finally $3.6 billion from the Department of Defense’s military construction account. Trump can also use $21 billion from military construction funds that aren’t already obli-
gated for use on the border, as well as from the Overseas Contingency Operations, or OCO. “[Trump] is free to spend [the $21 billion] without a vote from Congress,” said an anonymous aide who spoke to CNBC. “He has to notify Congress of what he’s done but he doesn’t have to come to Congress to do it.” As of March 5th, 16 states have sued Trump in a lawsuit over the border being built. Washington State is not included in those 16 states. On February 25th, 58 former U.S. national security officials sent a letter to the Trump Administration voicing that they believed the reasoning behind the national emergency was flawed, specifically stating that walls wouldn’t affect drug trafficking, illegal border crossings are near 40 year lows, and that most undocumented immigrants overstayed their vistas after entering the United States legally, something that the border wall wouldn’t fix.
They also wrote that Trump’s administration’s own data conflicted with his statements about the emergency. This they believe proves the inefficiency of the Trump Administration. Details on the lawsuits progress are still pending and will be covered in future issues in the Aluant.

It will also break up the big banks. The deal also addresses voters’ rights, which means a vote- marked paper ballot for all votes, which will be counted before all results are released. Election day will also become a national holiday, and the Electoral College will be abolished. This allows the direct election of a president. The deal has people on both sides suspicious, seeing that the elimination of all fossil fuel would get rid of most of our cars, planes, and ships; and in their place there will be a high speed trains. Opening Scenes for EHS Film Club Ava Stuart A Producer Feature
The Ellensburg High School Film Club was created at the beginning of this 2018-19 school year. With Jada Godwin (Sophomore) as the President and Michael Nelson as the supervisor, the club as a whole has some big plans in its future. As president, Godwin is in charge of quite a bit, including but not limited to: directing the video shoots, planning meeting agendas, and looking over scripts. She started the club because of her interest in film and all of the aspects that go into it, such as writing, acting, shooting, and editing. At the end of last year, she came up with the idea of starting the club by talking about it with our students. She wanted to find others that wanted to be involved. Nelson was very supportive of her idea, saying that “I love it because I love the idea of making short films and letting kids find something in school in school that they actually want to do”. The club generated interest quite quickly. Since its creation, Godwin has really enjoyed the club, saying that “it is interesting working with a group who are all interested in the same thing.” Griffyn Bellah enjoys the

Apex Legends struck the gaming community like a truck. Apex Legends is another battle royale game but don’t be disappointed it is amazing. The game was announced and released on February 4th. No advertising or anything (very odd marketing skills) but it obviously worked, because Apex Legends gained 1 million players in he first hour of release, 2.5 million in the first day, 10 million in 3 days, and 25 million in a week. These are phenomenal results. Fortnite had 10 million players in 2 weeks, 20 million in 6 weeks, 30 million in 11 weeks. Apex Legends gained almost the same amount of players in 1 week that Fortnite did in about a year. Apex Legends took everyone by surprise and just about every Gamer, Youtuber and human is talking about this game. EHS is no
exception. “We have many Apex Legends players in our school. “(Damien Anderson) Senior Anderson Plays Apex Legends and is a remarkable player. Anderson has been playing this game since it’s release. Pierce rates the game at an 8/10 also. He says this game is incredible for such a abrupt release. I asked him why he thinks they had such an abrupt release, and he said. “Well you see, sometimes advertising before release can actually put the company at a disadvantage, because all sorts of videos would be made, shaping people’s perception of the game before it even releases. A great example is Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, when they advertised the game coming out with no single player campaign; but a battle royale game mode, a lot of people were very disappointed.” Apex Legends with their surprise, of a game swept the floor for all video games this month!
