The Trenches of 1914 Steven Szombathy A Staff Reporter Editorial

“Yesterday about four o’clock in the afternoon there was a fierce and terrible onslaught of Christmas packages onto our trenches. No man was spared. “In the confusion, one soldier suffered the paling of a salami two inches in diameter straight into his stomach…Another had two large raisins from an exploding pastry fly directly into his eyes…A third man had a great misfortune of having a full bottle of cognac fly into his mouth.” (The Jenaer Volksblatt, 1914) This excerpt is from a letter written by a German soldier in World War 1 during the legendary Christmas truce of 1914, during a time of war when soldiers from both the British side and German side ceased fire and took a few brave steps into no man’s land, 104 years ago, on Christmas Eve. This was a time when soldiers on both sides suffered not only a constant rain of bullets and artillery but brutal cutting air, flooding trenches, and collapsing trench walls. When Sir John French, a British Field Marshal, noticed the tolerant attitude his men had for the enemy, his response was artillery and a no unofficial armistice policy. These soldiers laid

down their rifles and shook hands with the enemy, recognizing them as fellows during this truce. As the Germans and French made peace, a German soldier climbed atop a hill and started a speech. Although only the German soldiers knew what he was saying, the French understood what the man meant when he smashed his rifle upon the stump next to him, earning major praise from both sides. But how did this all start? Both armies had meals at the same time, which became a daily cease fire, and patrols began to look the other way when they spotted the enemy. Over in the German trenches, commanders had shipped homesick men presents from the country they so bravely fought for. Every man received a package from the Kaiser himself- a box of cigars for the NCOs and a pipe with the Crowned Prince on it for the ranked. The British were each given a brass box of cigarettes, tobacco, and a card and sweets from Princess Mary. Both sides also received gifts from their families that so patiently waited for the return of a son, husband, and father. The Germans put small candle lit trees on there parapet and soon began to sing carols. These songs rang across the war scorched

plain, becoming what most men would refer to as hell. Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht, the Austrian version of Silent Night was one such song. Not wanting to back down from a clear challenge, Lieutenant Sir Edward Hulse led his men in their own carol to drown out the Germans. Men from both sides sang Good King Wenceslaus, along with Auld Lang Syne in the battle of the carols. In other areas along the trenches the Germans yelled out in broken English “tomorrow you no shoot, we no shoot”. A Bavarian unit held their fire during a French mass and the British Indian troops ceased fire to celebrate Diwali. Brave men throughout the trenches took a trip that on any other day would be suicide. While the rest never stopped shooting, soldiers from the entire length of the trenches took the time to bury their fallen friends. Thus was the Christmas truce of 1914. The truce is an example for all of us to follow. Even enemies who drew the blood of their brothers laid down their arms to celebrate this incredible holiday season. So set aside your differences and join arms in celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanza. From the Alutant to you: Have a great holiday season!

A Shorter Winter Break Stuart A AvaProducer

and the student bodies’ thoughts on this issue

This winter, brace yourself for a slightly shorter winter break. When asked about their opinions on the matter, a few students and administration shared their opinion. McKenzie Egan: “It’s terrible.” Joe Davis: “I wish it was longer. I would rather have a longer winter break, because I notice it more when I get a long winter break rather than a longer summer. I have a game called Red Dead Redemption 2 that I could be playing. I wanna watch Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Star Wars over the break.” Sadie Hartrick: “It kinda sucks.” Mrs. Naboychik: “Honestly, I am fine with it. I would much rather have more summer days.” But when brought up Joe’s point: “Yeah that makes sense. I’m

not opposed to a two week winter break.” Kassy Edie: “I’m not too happy about it. I like long breaks and it would be nice to spend more time with my family.” Mr. Snow: “Bummer. I think everyone looks forward to having that break and hopefully it doesn’t negatively affect that too bad.”

days shorter so it is not that big of a difference. It is closer to graduation. I’m not going anywhere for Christmas so I don´t want to get too bored at home. I’m excited to start college too. I think that our Christmas break is too long in general. I think we should have more breaks throughout the year.¨ It is clear that many of the students seem to be unhappy with how the winter break schedule worked out this year although some have been able to see some optimistic viewpoints as well.

Patrick Adkisson: “I don’t really like it.” Sarah Moore: “It doesn’t affect me but it sucks. It doesn’t give time for vacations without missing Christmas.” Mr. Musser: “I don’t mind it because I’m here a lot anyway.” Georgia Mallet: “No bueno. I think we should have two weeks because of vacations. Families get together during Christmas break.”

Anonymous poetic response to the issue: Break. What!? What do you mean we lost our break? You made us not free you snake! You better fix this for our sake! Political rap yo. -Anonymous

Static Club

A

Faith Simcox Staff Reporter Feature

Clubs in school are usually fun and frilly places where you do group projects and community service. Static Club accomplishes the same thing but is also a safe environment with nice people. In Static Club, a member from CareNet, Karen Goebel, comes to talk about problems that kids our age are struggling with and how to deal with them in a healthy manner. She talks about things like STD prevention, bullying, and how to have a successful path for the future. Other members from different counseling offices and youth services, like Aspen, also visit to try to help students find ways to deal with things like abuse. Goebel’s main goal for this club is to give students a safe environment where they can find help and support that they may not be getting from home She focuses on students who Students listen in to what Goebel has to say.

have goals but don’t know how to keep on track with them, students who are struggling with teen pregnancy, and kids who are also struggling with things that will derail them off of their tracks, like porn. One of the many topics that is discussed is how to see the signs of an unhealthy relationship. Many students can fall into a relationship that is very controlling, and they may not see the signs because the controlling person is able to make it not seem that way. The idea of Static Club is to empower students where they need it. Many students don’t have the support that they need, so Goebel helps students to realize that their choices are their own and whatever they decide to do is on them and not on anybody else. “Success or failure is all on you,” says Goebel. She helps students to set a clear path for a healthy future and to see life in a bigger picture. Goebel has been coming to EHS for 3 years now to give kids a safe place to go and to support to kids who need somebody to talk to. She has gone to Kittitas High School for 10 years, and really hopes to be able to go to Morgan. She says that “6th graders are much more trusting than 9th graders, so being able to get to them at an earlier age would benefit them for when they reach high school.”

Goebel speaks to the kids about the subject of bullying.

Static Club is a voluntary club, meaning you don’t have to sign up and you can attend any of the meetings. They meet up every Wednesday in Ms. Treadwell’s room during lunch. Static Club has impacted many students in a healthy manner and has been a home where they can find refuge when they may not be able to find it anywhere else. Jared Gomez, a senior at EHS, says that “it gave me a little bit of an outlook on life and how to find resources for some counselors.” Goebel believes very strongly in this club and hopes to have more students attend the meetings because she knows that students struggle with risky decisions and what to do in hard situations. “I believe it’s made a difference in many students’ lives, and it definitely has made a difference in mine.” Naomi Brons (Sr) decorates a cookie during Static Club

Jeremy May A Social media Manager Sports

years the girls team will continue to dominate the Central The EHS girls soccer team Washington Athletic Conferhas done amazing this season, ence (CWAC). After talking to senior finishing in the top 8 teams in Mckenzie Egan and freshthe state of Washington. Although their season is man Dylan Phillip, we now over, for the next couple of know how these players came to grow a sport at Ellensburg High school. Phillip was one of the lead goal scorers finished 15 goals during the season, which was a huge part of the girls success. “Honestly I didn’t think it would be anything like it is right now,” said Phillip. For the past 4 years the team has competed in 2 state playoffs. Egan has playing left wing and wing back for the past 12 years. The team has grown into a family on the field after practicing and playing with

each other. “Play every game likes its your last, never take it for granted. It goes by so fast so play with everything you got and never give up,” said Egan to underclassmen players. “The most memorable part was getting to go to state freshman year with all the upperclassmen”said Egan. Making it to the playoffs is the main goal for every organized school sport. To compete amongst other schools, and in the end win a state title, is the high school athletes dream. The overall competitiveness of the sport has grown a lot in the U.S. these last few years. With more and more people getting involved in the sport the need for players competitiveness has noticeably increased.

How Was Ralph’s Return Received?

Ava Stuart Producer Movie Review

The new movie, Ralph Breaks the Internet was a surprisingly pleasant film to watch. While the title of the movie made it sound like it was from 2014, the movie itself was actually quite relevant. In this sequel, Ralph and Vanellope are still best friends. When Vanellope voices some of her struggles about how predictable her game is and how she may want more in life, Ralph doesn´t understand because he believes that his life is perfect. He tries to fix her issue by creating another racing track which, through a chain reaction, results in breaking the steering wheel to the game. They are given a new opportunity to explore the internet, so

Ralph devises a plan to get the wheel back in order to save the game. They end up going on an adventure with a good mixture of touching and hilarious moments, making references to many memes along the way. One thing that Disney always seems to do well is making enjoyable movies for all ages. While many of the jokes are clearly targeted to make children laugh, some, clearly, were not. Although I did find the movie entertaining, its fallback came in the form of one, very misplaced musical scene. I think that the creators intended for the scene to be interpreted in an ironic way but its execution did not get that across 100%. Before the scene even began, the foreshadowing to the musical number left me hoping that it wasn’t

going to actually happen. Despite my few issues with this movie, I would still recommend it to others as long as they are in the mood for a typical, feel-good Disney film.
