How to handle Seasonal Affective Disorder

Ava Stuart A Producer Editorial

A lot of people in the United States deal with depression and certain times of year can be much more difficult than others for them. Knowing what and what not to do to help someone can be very helpful to your friends, family, and strangers that you would like to help through the disorder. Seasonal affective disorder, ironically known as SAD and most commonly referred Adviser: to as seasonal depression, is typically the prodJon McClintick uct of reduced sunlight and the general abrupt Affiliations change in seasons that results in mood swings Washington Journalism or depression (Mayo Clinic). Seasonal depression can be a very huge struggle for people in whatever time of year affects them. It tends to make it more difficult when the people around don’t understand that SAD is a very really and difficult issue to deal with. The best thing you can to for people who are struggling with SAD is to understand why Cover photo: EHS wrestler sets up at it is happening. the Ray West Jamboree Some aspects that you must know in order By Stephen Szombathy to fully be there for someone is that SAD is not

something that you can simply “fix”. It is something that people have to struggle with daily so getting reminders that they should just be happy is completely unproductive. You must let people feel the way that they feel. This being said, don’t make excuses for them that may lead them towards not getting treatment. Another important thing is to realize that depression is a very serious condition and it also isn’t personal. SAD plagues much of the United States’ population. Although some forms of depression can be brought on by events that may occur in one’s life, it is never something that can be blamed on anybody in particular. As everyone goes through the coming cold season and eventual warm ones, just remember to be conscientious about what other people may be dealing with, because you never know if they could be feeling the affects of SAD or really anything else. If you yourself are dealing with it, than remember to try your best to get sleep and begin with healthy habits, look into bright light therapy, and try to talk to a professional about any potential medicines that may be helpful or even talk to someone about your feelings. There are a lot of ways to help people but educating oneself on the topic is the most helpful thing to do. I hope that this article helped but continue to research and learn more things on the topic if you would like to really enact change. In the end though, remember that you don’t know what other people have going on and being mindful of that can really make a difference in what you do or do not say.

Second Semester Tips

Imani Alexander A Editor In Chief Feature

3

Study and learning tips to help you be more successful second semester.

It’s a new year, and that means that schedules are changing! While turning a new leaf for a new term, it’s time to consider how to change your study habits. The best way to find out what kind of study habits you should adopt is by knowing what kind of learner you are. According to the VARK model; there are typically 4 types of ways that people learn: -Visual learner Someone who learns best when seeing information in charts, graphs, diagrams, maps or drawings. A visual learner succeeds the most when the information is being presented with patterns and shapes instead of spoken or written. For the visual, graphic organizers and doodles are a must! -Writing and Reading learner Someone who does really well when presented with words. Taking notes to read later is definitely in the daily to-do. Analyzing things by writing in their own words is the best way for them to retain information.

-Auditory learner Someone who learns best when they hear the information they need to understand. Talking through things in group discussions or listening to lectures, audio recordings, and group activities are the best ways for success! -Kinesthetic learner Someone who does really well when they relate something they’re learning to physical relations in their real life. Experiments and simulations are huge help! Getting to touch and feel physical objects and being able to interact with something is the best way to be successful.

Knowing what kind of learner you are is a huge step in the right direction of staying on top of your classwork. When it comes time for important tests and such, make sure to ask your teachers for resources to help you based on the type of learner you are. And if you’re in that last minute panic for tomorrow’s tests, here are 6 basic study tips to help you when it comes to test preparation. 1. Make sure to eat healthy and drink tons of water. Keep your body happy and your mind progressive! 4 Teach someone what you are trying to learn. If you are successful in getting them to understand the material, you’re all set!

2. Color code your notes. According to shiftelearning.com writing everything in BLUE ink is best for productivity and retaining information. And then highlight in ORANGE. This will increase oxygen supply, which improves stimulation.

But most importantly; take care of yourself, don’t overwhelm your body, and good luck.

3. Create your own study guide. Even if your teacher has made one for you. Write things in your own words and quiz yourself on vocabulary. 5. Lastly join (or create) a study group. If you have other people to bounce ideas off of it will help you a lot. Learn things from other people to keep you on your toes. And there is nothing like peer pressure to keep you on top of your game!

The Ellensburg boys basketball team this season have gone 8-1 and are on top of the CWAC holding that number one spot. The boys team has done a tremendous job this year, beating Selah and Wapato for the first time in the last 4 years. Steele Venters has put on a show this season for the team. Bringing in an average of 24 points a game and also showing his dominance in height with some killer dunks through the season. Venters is a part of the graduating class of 2019 and has an assortment of offers to play in college from Saint Martins, Central Washington, Hawaii Hilo and Alaska Fairbanks. “I like that it’s very competitive, and how it’s so fast paced” Venters said. He has been playing basketball for 12 years and played for a number of different select traveling teams. Recalling one of the many dunks Venters said “I had a dunk against East Valley where I got a rebound and went coast to coast and got an And 1 dunk over a kid.” The CWAC is full of

talented players and programs creating competitive competition for every team. Venters said the teams he hates the most in the league are Selah and Ephrata “Just how much they talk smack.” Ventershas been playing at the varsity level for the bulldogs for the past 4 years. Competing to get that starting spot and taking the team to a new level. Many schools play hard defense on him to try and stop his incredible game. Starting out young Steele join a community school league for basketball and slowly as he grew, began to play more competitive ball. Putting in hours in the gym working on his handling and his shot. Over all, he has played for 7 different teams through the years to play at the next level. He is not hard to miss at the

high school. You can see him talking around the halls towering over practically everyone. Once Steele finishes his high school education. Venters plans on going to one of the many schools to play ball and continue his education in accounting.

Kicking It Through Winter

Jeremy May A Social media Manager Sports Feature

During the winter when the weather is cold, there is soccer still being played out at the racket and recreation center off Vantage highway. On Tuesdays and Thursday from 3:30 to 5 you can come out and play soccer along with running technical drills. The games run for a time of five minutes or if one team scores two goals. It’s a classic 5 on 5 for anyone who wants to become a better soccer player in a fast paced environment.

The teams are picked playground style by team captions determined by the number of players that are at the racket center. The number of teams will vary but a majority of the time there is around 3 teams. This is a great way to test your interests in soccer while also having fun with other players. If there is any interest in playing soccer during the high school season you should look into coming to some indoor practices be-

fore the season starts. Playing soccer is a great way to stay in shape and be active with friends and others from the high school. The indoor soccer season runs from November to March.

New Years Resolutions

Olivia Anderson A Staff Reporter Feature

As the new year rolls around, people pledge themselves goals mainly to better themselves but sometimes to better those around them. Some wish to be more productive or active, while others think to improve a certain skill of theirs. There are many resolutions that EHS students made this year. Here are a couple of resolutions from two students who attend Ellens-

7

burg High School. Marilyn Shlanger and Ruth Douglas. Marilyn Shlanger is a senior who is well known for her participation in both of the theatre productions EHS puts on yearly. Marilyn’s schedule however, is packed full and because of this her goal for the new year is to get her grades squared away and back up. Ruth Douglas has been attending EHS since she was a freshman, now she is a junior. Though she has many loving friends her resolution is to have a more positive way of thinking and having more of an optimis-

tic view on things. These people are two of many who dared to dedicate themselves to a challenge this year. This year is not any different for me. I will be trying to be a better and nicer person and to be more productive. To those who did make resolutions, I hope you are able to complete them while the year progresses.

The Environmental and

Some members of the climbing club pose for a picture.

Ava Stuart A Producer Feature

The Ellensburg High School Environmental Club has been around for approximately twenty years while the Climbing Club has been around for a few weeks at most. The clubs have many of the same members. Both clubs are advised by Jeff Hashimoto, a cross country coach and teacher of science at Ellensburg High School. The Environmental Club provides students the opportunity to get out into the environment to appreciate it. There are about 15-20 students involved. They usually try to target their outdoor activities to things that can improve the environment. They have gone out and appreciated

nature around Leavenworth. According to Hashimoto, the club adopted Reecer Creek as part of their adopt-a-stream campaign. When Fred Meyer was initially built, they were going to end up making a parking lot over Wilson Creek and putting it through a pipe, but EHS Environmental Club members went out to the community and voiced that they thought it was a bad idea. They wanted them to build a little habitat around Fred Meyer for the Creek, and it ended up becoming a condition of their permit for the area. They have a long history of advocating for the community because they find projects around the school and community. One project that they have just recently begun is about battery recycling. The idea is so that kids to be able to bring their used batteries to the high school, drop them in a receptacle, and have the environmental club drop them off at the recycling place rather than potentially harming the environment by just throwing them away. The materials from the batteries can seep into the ground and contaminate

groundwater and pollute. Another positive to recycling them is just that since they are reusable, why not reuse them? Another project that the club takes on each year is the salmon tank. It lies close to the entrance of the commons. They take on roles like monitoring the tank, keeping it clean, feeding the fish, and just generally making sure that they are healthy. They accomplish this by having one person in charge of it each week. The fish do the same thing in the tank that they are doing out in the rivers. The eggs at the bottom of the tank exemplify what is happening in the river. They dump the eggs in Reecer Creek (their adopted creek) in April. Hashimoto mentioned that

some of the fish out in the ocean could have possibly even started their life chaperoning EHS winter dances and activities. In a typical meeting, the will often have guest speakers to come in and talk about issues. They leave the floor open to kids to bring forward any issues that they may want to discuss or activity that they want to participate as a club in. They try to learn something about environmental issues in each meeting. They are currently taking part in a letter writing campaign to a representative or senator about environmental issues that they feel passionate about. The Climbing Club began with a bunch of students. It has grown to around 30 students. Hashimoto explained that when the Environmental Club went on their Leavenworth trip, there were a bunch of boulders around and that most likely had something to do with the original idea of the Climbing Club. Before the club was fully formed, the students would informally meet up at the central climbing wall, but they hope that they will be able to have reason-

able access to the climbing wall in the Aux Gym as well. In the future, they hope to make some outdoor trips because the climbing club is so new, they are still trying to find out and understand what they will and will not be able to do as a club at EHS. In the future, Hashimoto mentioned that the Climbing Club will hopefully bring in guest speakers as well. In a typical meeting, they will try to watch climbing videos to study techniques. They also try to get guest speakers to come in and talk about topics related to climbing. Hashimoto hopes that both clubs will continue to serve a positive role in the community. Keep a lookout for the environmental clubs battery box in the Commons soon. The environmental club meets on Wednesdays at lunch in Hashimoto’s room (Room E105), and the climbing club has not yet decided on an official meeting time. They think it will be during lunch as well though. You are welcome to drop into any meeting if you have any interest in joining either club.

FREE BIRD A

Faith Simcox

Staff Reporter Book Review

“Free Bird” is a novel written by John Raymond. This novel is told from four different perspectives, all from the Singer family: Anna, Ben, Aaron, and Grandpa Sam. From the start, this book jumps right into juicy drama. Anna, a bureaucrat in the Los Angeles Office of Sustainability, struggles with trying to take care of her father while also getting caught up in a current client. Her current client is an entrepreneur who is trying to convince her to help him with an unethical scheme to privatize the region’s wastewater by wooing her. Ben, the brother of Anna, is a former Navy SEAL who has just returned back from Afghanistan. He returns home with a form of PTSD and the symptoms of a psycho that end with murderous schemes. Aaron, the son of Anna, is a high school senior struggling to decide on what to do after school. Does he want to go on the road with his friend or go to college? Grandpa Sam, Anna and Ben’s father, is a Holocaust survivor who is holding on to his last days. His life experiences seem to frame the outcome of his family’s actions.

13

January 23, 2019

Anne and Ben go off on their separate ways dealing with work and private lives. Aaron decides to become Grandpa Sam’s caretaker to earn money. They eventually bond, going on a road trip that leads to being life changing for the both of them. This evil and wicked comedy throws teenage and adult lust around as well as the horrible effects of war. It gives insight to what it is like to be in the head of a psycho and how easy it can be to be manipulated into something outrageous when one is wooed. This novel ends with a twist and a surprise that by chance brings the entire family together, tying all of their stories into one. Photo courtesy the Los Angeles review

Album Review : YUNGBLUD’s ‘21st Century Liability’

A

Izaiah Taylor Business Manager Album Review

20 year old, Dominic Harrison a.k.a YUNGBLUD writes incredible songs that touch on controversial issues such as sexual harassment, corporate communism, and more. He brings the perspective of his younger self into the songs he creates. This helps him be more relatable to younger listeners who experience some of the things he speaks about. Intro: EulogyA great intro to a great album, I love the distorted amen at the end. MedicationThe video is amazing. I love this song, honestly I love every song on this album, but I love this one especially. It talks about how doctors diagnosed him repeatedly and he ended up depending on his medication for happiness. I think it’s sad, but I love that he talked about it, so people know that it does happen. Machine GunThis song is about the issue of gun violence in schools. I feel it is incredibly important because if you listen to the lyrics it makes you uncomfortable which is good since shootings are not a comfortable topic and we should work to make sure these shootings are less of an occurrence.

Psychotic KidsThe video for this one is quite spectacular. The song about how our generation is often misunderstood and thought to be “psychotic” by older generations, due to our generation being different from theirs. AnarchistIn this song YUNGBLUD speaks about being misunderstood and people thinking he is crazy, when he is just being himself, which I can completely relate to. When I was younger, my aunt thought I was insane and absolutely hated me when I was just a typical 9 year old trying to express myself. I Love You, Will You Marry Me?I love this track When you first listen to it, it sounds somewhat like a love song, but if you pay attention to the lyrics, you realize that it’s not. I admire the way he makes a song about corporate capitalists sound so lovely. The actual story behind the song is quite interesting, and the way he tells the story is pretty great, in my opinion.

Polygraph Eyes I love the message that Yungblud puts in this song as well. He speaks about the importance of consent and how often times girls are taken advantage of when they are intoxicated or wearing what they want to wear. Kill SomebodyThis song is interesting to me and the music video, in my opinion, gives great imagery on how his anxiety and depression make him feel inside. Disclaimer: The video has suicidal reference, but nothing is directly shown. Outro: 21st Century LiabilityI absolutely love how hype this song is. It has a similar message as Anarchist and it’s about how people of the older generations don’t really understand him and they just see him as a “liability” rather than focusing on his views on important topics such as the ones in this album.

Jump into the Spider-verse

15

A Comic Vividly Come to Life

A

Steven Szombathy

Staff Reporter Movie Review

Spiderman: Into the SpiderVerse is an epic comedic thrill ride that will have you on the edge of your seat with suspense and on the floor laughing. The movie was directed by Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti, and Rodney Rothman. It boasts an excellent voice acting cast that includes Shameik Moore, Nicolas Cage, Hailee Steinfeld, and many more. The animation in the movie makes it look like a comic book brought to the big screen. While it is beautiful and fitting for the movie. The slight 3D effect added to objects in the background is a little off putting, but other than that the movie’s design is amazing. The music was incredibly catchy and I caught myself tapping my foot and nodding my head to it. It also completely fit each character and area in the movie, the whole movie has this hip hop graffiti action comic book vibe. The movie begins with the character Kingpin building a super collider under Brooklyn that brings five different people (and a pig) with spider personas to a single universe- Miles Morales’s universe. The 5 have to get back to their own universes before they straight up dissolve. The characters run around New York and Brooklyn trying to teach Miles how to be spider . The plot

is a little rushed but is nothing too glaring. The whole movie is full of subtle references to other Spiderman properties, such as the games and older movies. I am trying my best to not spoil anything, but the whole movie wrapped up is quite nice. If you’re wondering, the movie does have a Stan Lee cameo and a quote at the end of the movie dedicated to him.

The movie is good, plain and simple, with funny moments, epic fight/chase scenes, and heartwarming moments all combined into one big beautiful Spiderman movie. It definitely helps redeem Sony animation after the mess that was the Emoji Movie. All and all I give it a 4.5 spiders out of 5. Now if you excuse me, I have to go do some definitely not spider related things.
