Sports Vs The Arts Steven Szombathy A Staff Reporter Editorial

Why are sports more popular than the arts (i.e. music, painting, theatre, etc.) nowadays? It seems that, as time went on, high school sports have taken the metaphorical driver’s seat in high school. As time pushes on, focus has shifted from the arts to a more sport related way of things. Where sports like football and wrestling are given massive send offs when they are sent off to state championships like banners and pep rallies. But when it comes to the arts they get little posters around the school and maybe a shout out in morning announcements. No large rally or anything close to major recognition. But why has music, art, theater and other things in that area been set aside for soccer, golf, baseball, etc? Some say it’s because sports are a lot more difficult to learn. Well clearly those people have never learned to play an instrument. On average it

takes 2-3 months to learn a set of songs for a band/ orchestra concert. In theater, actors have to learn their lines over the course of 1-2 months and in the same time frame set crew have to learn and mark where all the set pieces and props go along with where the actors must stand and walk during a scene. Athletes have to learn a lot for different sports along with training their body to get peak performance. Most people say that sports have taken priority because of how strenuous sports can be on the body and that the arts don’t have such stress. And in some instances they’re right. Key word: there are “some.” When learning their instruments, musicians train their arms, lungs, and brain to play. But again this work is set aside for football and other sports. People argue that sports build leadership skills and team work in a way that the arts don’t. An orchestra works like one big machine. If one part messes up, the whole thing

could be thrown off. The only time a sports plan fails is when the main player is thrown off wack. In theater actors use the lines and movements of other actors to cue them, and if the first actor misses heir cue or messes up, hey could throw others off a bit or entirely. The arts get little to no recognition even though they put in the same amount or even more work than athletes. The fix is stupid simple: just give the arts more recognition. Go to any of the music teacher and ask when their next concert is. Go to the fall play or winter musical, even ask the ASB to hold an art competition or showcase. The fact that all this work has gone unnoticed is a little disappointing

A New Scene for the Red Pickle Ava Stuart A Producer News Article

Mario Alfaro, the owner of the Red Pickle, works hard to create an inviting, family friendly restaurant. His passion for food and global cuisine make the Red Pickle like no other restaurant in Ellensburg. Each time that I’ve dined at The Red Pickle, I’ve found the staff friendly and the food offered a unique, interesting, and delicious experience. The Red Pickle is moving from the food truck that is was being run out of on Wenas Street, into the newly renovated old D&M location on Pine Street. The new location will have its own seating and will offer a more full dining experience. Alfaro is thankful to have a spot to decorate and more fully call his own. Additionally, the new space will be even more family friendly, allowing for people of all ages to enjoy a meal together indoors. One difference that the Red Pickle has is that they offer dishes with Latin and Guatemalan spices.

This shows the interior of the building in early development.

This is Mario Alfaro sitting at one of his new tables.

Furthermore, each month they offer and encourage people to try wild game dishes. Some animals that they have used before are; octopus, bison, rabbit, and even alligator. Their food is a relatively American style mixed with a lot of Guatemalan touches. Alfaro and his employees are extremely excited about having a new and permanent location, so keep your eyes peeled for when the new and improved Red Pickle opens its doors in mid-November. Come and enjoy a different and fun culinary experience. I know I will!

The red Pickle’s logo is shown above.

EHS Senior Grace Walter is shown smiling at the new location. Behind her, the black spot, is where there will be a mural that Alfaro is very excited about.

This is the outside of their new location.

The food truck above was the Red Pickle’s original restaurant.

A Star Is Born

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in a movie? An amazing duo that no one saw coming. In the movie “A Star Is Born” Bradley Cooper plays a famous singer/songwriter, Jackson Maine. After one of his many performances, he decides to go to a random bar and meets the lovely Ally, an unknown artist struggling with her own talents who is played by Lady Gaga. Going into the movie, these two unlikely characters fall in love. Jackson goes about trying to help Ally

grow into the star that she always dreamed of being. While her career goes up, Jackson’s goes down in a series of events that consist of jealousy and abuse of drugs and alcohol. Throughout the movie, the couple fight for each other while being pulled around by the music business. This movie is filmed in a very subtle and slow going way. The camera angles make it seem as if you are in the movie itself. The acting is incredibly phenomenal, considering that nobody ever saw Lady Gaga being an actress. She isn’t dressed in her usual crazy attire, and Bradley Cooper

5

had grown out his bead and hair to play his role. And the songs alone that are played are soul surfing, however they are not original to the movie. If you are down for tear jerking movies, 10 out of 10 would recommend this movie. It gives you a great insight to the music business, and how not every career and money means one has a good life. Even in the best of places, one can still struggle. Within this movie, you’ll experience every emotion there is. From super angry, to incredibly broken, to even falling in love. Do you like gushy movie? Go see this bad boy.

Evening on Broadway, A Night to Remember Jada Godwin A Staff Reporter Review

A performance that deserves to be seen again, Ellensburg High School’s Evening on Broadway was a collection of Broadway songs and scenes acted out by student actors. The mood of each song radiated from each student who performed, from somber to joyful to hilariously drunk, and reached into each heart in the crowd at the Morgan Middle School Theater. Character bits were an audi-

Popular from Wicked (performed by Haley Rominger, assisted by Jael Cutlip), and Secondary Characters from Title of Show (performed Kassy Edie and Reagan Weitzel). Stepsisters’ Lament from Cinderella (performed by the Bella Voce Women), and lastly;

There is Nothing Like a Dame from South Pacific (performed by the Chamber Choir Men) were also comedic and lively, along with many, many others. While there was some mistakes and a few lines fed, the performances fared quite well for a high school production. Throughout the night the actors became more and more animated, with both the audience and actors leaving Morgan buzzing from the lighthearted, upbeat experience.

THE MISSING 411

Olivia Anderson A Co-Editor in Chief News

Before I get into the actual article, let me fill you in on some information. Half of this article is not even a theory. These are confirmed facts that are followed by theories potentially explaining it. All of the statements in the first three paragraphs are true. The last few paragraphs are the theories that explain how and why these situations occurred. None of the theories are confirmed and all of this is just what I do on my free time. Do not use any of these theories as facts, although you may or may not believe them just know that none of it is confirmed to be true. It was all theorized by someone with too much free time. Since the late 1800s people around North America have been disappearing in national forests and unmarked land.

Alutant

A CONSPIRACY THEORY

There have been more than 1600 unsolved disappearances and it all started with a person who looked into this in the beginning of his career with law, David Paulides. He is a retired police officer and was on duty for just under seventeen years working for the San Jose police department and even their swat team. Before his work as a police officer he started as a park ranger and this is where it began. The mans resume is very odd from an outsiders view. First thing listed is his work in the police force, following is a bigfoot enthusiast. Now, kind of strange but not too weird, right? Wrong. The last thing he has on his resume is a cryptozoologist. A person who spends their time attempting to prove that creatures from folklore exist.

It doesn’t sound too weird that he is doing research in these types of things. He has been researching these disappearances since his time as a park ranger around 1977 and well into 2018. He has written many books such as “Missing 411” which has inspired a documentary with the same title. So, why “Missing 411” if there are well over four times that amount of people missing. Well, the man has been doing his research, clearly. He’s been at it for years now. But why 411? It is because of how many reports and records he has access too. He has had to buy reports from the national parks to gain access to possible theories as to why they disappeared. What he found has been chilling. A quote he lives by when doing interviews about the missing 411 is “I do not make theories, I only connect facts”. So with that being said. Here is the information he has gathered throughout the years. The people who go missing aren’t of any specific age. Most of them however, are children, young adults, and adults, not to many old people but that’s kind of a given because what

Alutant

old person is going to go on a hike. It does not matter if they have a pet with them, and if they were taken with the pet and the body hasn’t turned up, the pet didn’t either. Those whose bodies have been found, dead or alive, were found miles away from where they disappeared. If they were found dead most of their clothing has either been removed or cut off and those who have been found dead were, what appeared to be killed, in a brutal way. Most of the time being found at the bottom of a cliff or bluff. There has only been one report of someone disappearing with af gun, out of 1600. The man was found at the bottom of a cliff with his clothing removed. Weapon nowhere is sight. A decent amount of the people, if in groups, were either the scope at the front of the group or scout in the back. Those who were found alive have no recollection of how they went missing, where they went missing, and if someone kidnapped them. For the last piece for information, there is no specific gender missing. There is not a significant difference between the amount men or woman who went missing. Now onto the theories. These theories range anywhere from people getting lost to aliens abducting them. However, the most widely accepted theory is that it’s bigfoot. I know, what a shocker. I believe it’s a bigfoot like creature. Of course most of these

November 14, 2018

theories are supported by the proof of no specific gender or age. However, I do not believe it is exactly bigfoot. But we will get into what I believe later, let’s start with the alien theory. The “proof” that aliens are the culprits that those who disappeared in groups literally disappeared with no trace. Of course, some claim that there were lights or weird noises, but other than that most disappeared without yelling, screaming, making some sort of noise. Even if they had just been seen minutes before, they seem to be gone in the blink of an eye. This makes a decent amount of sense. It would explain why bodies are found miles away from the location they vanished from. It would also explain why the clothing would be removed and why the pets are never found. But, that’s the only thing these people have going for them. The getting lost theory. This one doesn’t make too much sense other than the fact that people get lost. No sign of screaming doesn’t justify their disappearance unless they got injured and had no ability to signal their position. It also doesn’t explain why most are found without clothes or without their pets. Unless they have lost the pet or suffered from paradox undressing. A symptom of severe hypothermia to the point where one feels a burning sensation and feels compelled to remove all articles of clothing. Now, for the one I(kind of) believe. Bigfoot. I do not

9

believe its bigfoot, but it is backed up by the same proof. The only difference is the reasonings. There are no reasons theorized as to why bigfoot would kill and kidnap people, that is why I do not believe its bigfoot. I believe it is lost indian tribes that migrated deep into the forest when we invaded. They are now in need to expand and further their bloodline, this is why they kidnap hikers. This would explain why those who go missing are either in the front or in the back, why most bodies are found undressed at the base of a cliff and why the pets are never found. The pets being useful and them killing people that attempt to fight back. They learned from the guy with the gun that guns are bad and shouldn’t be messed with. It explains why people are never found or never found near the location they disappeared and why parks refuse to release information. Also, why it’s people of all ages and genders. There are a lot of tribes that have no connections to the modern world, many have already been found but are too hostile to interact with. It is very possible for tribes to be hidden away in national parks or forests especially considering the history the United States has behind it. It is definitely a large probability. Of course these are just theories and not confirmed, nor do you have to believe in them. Just a fun little thing I like to spend my time doing.

Falling For the Season

11

It is that time of the year, fall! Many people hate it, most love it. The time where people dust off their favorite sweater, buy their pumpkin spice latte and take selfies. Walk in the rain, and kiss their lovers under the trees. Dead leaves are collected in piles, and the kids are jumping. The season where pumpkins are picked, and corn is boiled and potatoes are baked. Spooky season is upon us, halloween day is on its way. Trick or treat, better be ready. For the kids are roaming, begging for candy. Everyone has something in the fall time that they specifically love. It can be a sweater, food, drink, the nature setting. Having different taste buds and feelings towards things. “Pumpkin spice latte, because it is fall in a mug. Tastes how it looks outside, a hug in a mug.”

“I don’t really drink coffee, so no sorry bud.”

“Do you have anything favorite you wear in the fall time?”

“Sweaters, scarfs, jackets, easy to layer. If too hot, take a layer off. If too cold, put a layer on. And no one cares if you look like a hobo.”

“Nice being able to wear sweatshirts again. Jean jackets and jeans. Being able to wear comfortable clothes again.”

“Do you have a favorite food and why?”

“Homemade chex mix, turkey roast, soup, caramelized sweet potato. Because they are family recipes and enjoy making them with my family.”

“Pumpkin pie is classic favorite, also thanksgiving food is classic.”

“Does fall give you a certain feeling? Can you describe them to me?”

“It feels cozy. I remember when I was a kid, we would rake up all the leaves and jump in them! It brings back memories.”

“Memories of playing football with my buddies.”

“Is fall your favorite season? Why or why not?“

“Yes, cause I feel like there’s more outfit options. I love fall holidays like halloween and thanksgiving.”

“Great season, but not my favorite season. Summer is my favorite season, get a break from school and have freedom.”

Steven Szombathy Staff writer

Thanksgiving is a holiday that has been brushed aside in recent years for the bigger holidays like Halloween and Christmas. Personally, I’m not a big fan of that. I remember when I was younger and my mother, along with a couple other people in my neighborhood, would decorate their houses for Thanksgiving. So what can you do to show your Thanksgiving spirit? It’s not as hard as you might think. First, your table is looking a little bland. You could get a Thanksgiving-themed tablecloth and see if you could find cornucopia shaped salt and pepper shakers. Yes, they exist. I have seen them with my human eyes. Get some orange, red, and brown washable napkins and wrap your silverware in them to give it kind of a restaurant feel. Does your kitchen have counters? I assume so because it’s a kitchen, so line

it with fake leaves on a string. Do the same thing to the borders of your windows. You can do this using tape or those command hooks that you can find at Fred Myers or any arts and craft store. Another thing you could do is to go online and find Thanksgiving themed couch pillows and blankets for the couch. HEY YA GOT SMALL KIDS OR BABYS IN YOUR HOUSE? Then get some paper, trace their hands and make hand turkeys. Cut them up and put them on the walls with scotch tape. But what about the outside? Your yard is looking a little left out. First, you must perform some yard care. Your yard is looking sad. First rake those leaves, then when you have a big pile, put them in an even BIGGER compost pile. Mowing the lawn wouldn’t hurt either since yard care is important. When you’re done with that, string more fake leaves around the trim of your house or some

orange and red lights. You could also buy a giant inflatable Turkey! Those are always fun. If your good with woodworking/wood burning then you could make some funny Thanksgiving signs that say bad puns like “Gobble til you wobble” or “we will stuff you like a turkey” and put them on your door or in your driveway. Well, that’s all I got I hope this guide makes it easier to decorate your house for this, the tastiest of holidays.

Having A Fun Halloween

Olivia Anderson A Co-Editor in Chief Opinion

Halloween. But when it comes to movies I usually stick to movies that aren’t too well known. Because of this, I have not seen most popular horror movies. And I thought it would be fun if I did do that cause why not? Ya know? Conjuring: At first, it was a really good horror movie. It scared me, it was freaky, I expected a lot of it but it was so well executed that it managed to scare me. But the second time I watched it, it wasn’t very good and because of that I give it a 6/10. It’s a good movie the first time but definitely not something I recommend watching for a second and third time. Paranormal Activity: Coming from a horror movie/story/experience nerd, my honest rate of “Paranormal Activity” is 4/10. It had a great plot, cool ideas, but there was not a single scary thing about it. The scariest part was the last thirty seconds of the movie. I do think the filming of it was very good and unique idea and it was well executed. If you haven’t seen Paranormal Activity, the whole thing was shot through a video camera primarily held by “Micah” one of the main characters in the movie. It had just enough shakiness that it could totally play off as an actual inexperienced person filming, but steady enough that you can see what’s going on. I thought that was a nice touch. But other than that I thought it kind of sucked, could have definitely used more jump scares and a slightly different plot.

Halloween has arrived and gone with the snap of the finger and though this edition is preparing you for thanksgiving and the happy holiday spirit I will be the one to bring you the updates on the spooky things that have happened around Ellensburg this October. I will be reviewing haunted attractions around Ellensburg. And the first on our list is Huffman’s Haunted Corn Field. The first time I went through it was in 2017 and it was amazing,. My friend and I went and despite her being a thirty-five year old woman she sacrificed me to the man with a chainsaw and a man who goes by “Daddy” this year, 2018, I saw a lot of the same things. They had their recurring characters, chainsaw man, Daddy, yeller on the roof. But I saw a lot of the same stuff just placed differently. If there is one thing that made that night though, it was when a man in a mask booped my nose while we exchanged lizard noises. The second place I visited was the CWU haunting at the Student Union Recreation Center(SURC). It was amazing. It was a free event and they had pizza, cotton candy, and an assortment of energy drinks. They hosted a dance floor, zombie nerf shooting, and a haunted house. Though I never was able to participate in the haunted house, the zombie nerf shooting was by far one of my favorite parts about the whole night. They gave you nerf guns and your objective was to shoot zombies who are coming after you while doing a supply run. Every person I met was very friendly and accepting. Which made the night better considering it was just my sister and I. Those who showed up in costume were even better. I went as Annabelle, but there was an assortment of clowns and zombies, Anne HathaWe want to encorporate our students way, Emma Watson, a bubonic plague doctor, a dancing banana, and many more. into the design of our newspaper. Dr. Pearson is a CWU Associate Professor in Health Sciences and has a lot of interest in food and how it relates to people. She teaches a class based in the garden that her students can

take for credits. One thing that Dr. Pearson wants the students of EHS to know is that the garden is always looking for help. And anyone can help. They specifically need help with mulching, beautifying, and seed saving. She added that plain cardboard boxes are especially helpful for mulching because over time they’ll break down and help improve the soil. But the most important part?

The garden is always looking for new volunteers to help out.

Pearson can be found working at Central Garden often

Everyone is wanted and welcome. The garden is a great opportunity to get outdoors, contribute your time to something useful, meet new people, and, last but not least, get community service hours! Volleyball Serves a Powerful Season

Year after year the Ellensburg High School continues to show dominance in the Central Washington Athletic Conference. This year’s EHS volleyball team has gone undefeated in CWAC and is on to postseason. Volleyball brings in a large K9 student section to home games and some away games. With star athletes like senior, Gonzaga commit, Tia Andaya and junior, Shauny Fisk, there is no surprise that they sweep team after team. “Our team chemistry has grown the past few years and it’s made us play more as a team than individuals” said Shauny Fisk. Volleyball is a sport where teamwork wins games. Playing libero and outside hitter for the past 10 years has set her in a great position for the team. Fisk has played a key part in the program. Being verbal and communicating with her team has helped get everyone on the court on the same page. Practice is one of the reasons that EHS volleyball has done so good. “We are very focused and deliberate during practice and it shows in games.” said Tia Andaya. Playing setter and outside hitter, Andaya has won

many sets for her team and has caught the eye of college recruiters. She has committed to play division one volleyball at Gonzaga University after her high school career. Her name alone brings in an intimidation factor for other teams. The EHS volleyball team has made it to the postseason, almost every year. More athletes are starting to play year round in club programs in just about every sport you can think of. Once you have those players come back for the high school, there is a major difference on the court. Programs have started taking young players and making them performing machines. They have helped in conditioning, strength, physicality, and many other ways. This trend of athletes going through clubs has helped shape high school sports into what they are today.

Jumping for a spike.
