The Caribbean Jamaica to transform boyhood home of black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey into heritage site

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Jamaica’s culture minister says the government will refurbish the boyhood home of black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey and make it a heritage site. Lisa Hanna says her ministry wants people to visit the home in northern St. Ann parish and ’’pay tribute to a man who left a great legacy.’’ A timeline for the project was not provided. Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Jamaica in 1914. He inspired millions while transforming it into a mass movement while in New York. He was convicted in the U.S. of mail fraud and was deported to his Jamaican homeland in 1927. He died in London in 1940. Garvey was the first person named a Jamaican national hero following the island’s independence from Britain in 1962. The Associated Press

Telecom relaunches mobile money product in Haiti, where most people don't have bank accounts

of Haitian people,'' Digicel Haiti Chairman Maarten Boute said in a company statement.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti _ A mobile phone network provider has relaunched a money transfer system in Haiti designed to let people get easier access to cash through their cellphones. Digicel said that its rebranded “Mon Cash'' service offers promise in impoverished Haiti, a country where only about 16 per cent of the people have bank accounts. The relaunched effort has more vendors and a broader reach than a previous one called ’’TchoTcho'' in the country of 10 million inhabitants. “Mon Cash has the potential to significantly improve the lives

The telecom said the new mobile money product gives Haitian customers the ability to make domestic money transfers, pay bills and perform other basic transactions with their cellphones. People only need a valid government ID to register for free.

JOHANNESBURG _ A South African judge has granted bail to one of Nelson Mandela’s grandsons, accused of raping a 15-year-old girl. On Tuesday, Judge Pieter Du Plessis granted bail of 7,000 rand, nearly $540. The 24-year-old is accused of raping the girl at a Johannesburg-area restaurant on Aug. 7.

Mobile money-transfer systems are also popular in countries such as Kenya, Uganda and the Philippines.

In granting bail, the judge said there was a reasonable prospect that a trial could end in an acquittal.

Digicel said its service was developed with the Canadian bank Scotiabank.

The Mandela grandson’s lawyers tried to prove that the teenager appeared to be above the legal age of consent, which is 16. They also argued that the encounter was consensual, presenting written witness testimony.

Digicel operates in 31 markets in the Caribbean, Central America and the South Pacific. It is owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien and has its headquarters in Jamaica.

Weakening Tropical Depression Danny brings rain, strong winds as it crosses into Caribbean pected to produce 2 inches to 4 inches of rain in the Leeward Islands and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, as well as in drought-stricken Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Police in Jamaica say they have arrested two men suspected in the fatal shooting of a rookie officer in a gritty neighbourhood of the capital. The Jamaica Constabulary Force said Wednesday that the two men wanted for the slaying of Constable Lynden Barrett have been detained in separate operations. They identified the suspects as residents of Denham Town in gang-heavy West Kingston. The 23-year-old police constable was shot and killed on a street in Denham Town on July 21. Residents of the poor community have insisted that Barrett was killed by police colleague shooting wildly. But Police Commissioner Carl Williams has said he knows “for sure that the criminals are responsible for it.’’ The Associated Press

ROSEAU, Dominica _ Tropical Storm Danny brought rain and strong winds to the islands of the eastern edge of the Caribbean and then quickly dissipated as it headed west.

Dominica received just over 2 inches of rain and fallen rocks blocked roads but there were no reports of injuries or flooding, said Don Coriette, disaster preparedness co-ordinator. Antigua saw about 1.5 inches of rain, not enough to extinguish a landfill fire that was visible throughout the island since Sunday. Antigua-based airline LIAT, which had cancelled nearly 40 flights from Sunday to Tuesday, reinstated six of them shortly after the storm passed.

The system weakened into a tropical depression and then degenerated to a trough of low pressure, with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph (45 kph) as it passed through the Leeward Islands and crossed into the Caribbean Sea.

LONDON _ American civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson has visited WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange inside the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, where the Australian has been living for over three years. The Chicago-based Jackson spent over an hour talking with Assange, and the pair appeared together on the balcony of the embassy building. Assange, 44, sought sanctuary in the embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden. He has not been formally indicted, but is wanted there for questioning on rape allegations. Assange has refused to travel to Sweden, saying he fears it would lead to him being extradited to the United States because of an investigation into WikiLeaks’ dissemination of hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. documents. Recording of MLK's 1st version of 'I Have a Dream' speech discovered in North Carolina mass meeting. And it has the spirit of a sermon,'' Miller said. “And I never before heard Dr. King combine all those genres into one particular moment.''

RALEIGH, N.C. _ Before the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream'' speech to hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Washington in 1963, he fine-tuned his civil rights message before a much smaller audience in North Carolina. Reporters had covered King's 55-minute speech at a high school gymnasium in Rocky Mount on Nov. 27, 1962, but a recording wasn't known to exist until English professor Jason Miller found an aging reel-to-reel tape in a town library. Miller played it in public for the first time at North Carolina State University.

“It is part civil rights address. It is part

King used the phrase “I have a dream'' eight times in his address to about 2,000 people at Booker T. Washington High School in Rocky Mount, eight months before electrifying the nation with the same words at the March on Washington. He also referred to “the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners,'' saying he dreamed they would “meet at the table of brotherhood.'' On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, King changed that to “sit down together at the table of brotherhood.'' In both speeches, “Let Freedom Ring'' served as his rallying cry. “It's not so much the message of a man,'' the Rev. William Barber, president of the state chapter of the NAACP. “It's the message of a movement, which is why he kept delivering it. It proves once again that the 'I have a dream' portion was not a good

climax to a speech for mere applause, but an enduring call to hopeful resistance and a nonviolent challenge to injustice.'' Miller discovered the recording while researching “Origins of the Dream,'' his book exploring similarities between King's speeches and the poetry of Langston Hughes. His ah-ha moment came when he learned through a newspaper story about a transcript of the speech in state archives. If there's a transcript, then there must be a recording, he thought. He sent emails and made calls until he eventually heard back in the fall of 2013 from the Braswell Public Library in Rocky Mount, where staff said a box with the recording had mysteriously appeared on a desk one day. Handwriting on the box described it as a recording of King's speech, and said “please do not erase.'' Before listening to the recording, Miller confirmed that the 1.5-millimeter acetate reel-to-reel tape could be played safely. He brought it to an audio expert in Philadelphia, George Blood, who set it as close to its original levels as he could. Then Blood, whose clients include the Library of Congress, digitized the tape. It proved fortunate for King that he had practiced the dream part of his speech in Rocky Mount and later in Detroit, because it wasn't part of his typewritten speech in Washington. Historians say the singer Mahalia Jackson shouted “Tell them about the dream, Martin!'' as he reached a slow point in his prepared text. King then improvised, and lit up the audience with phrases very

similar to those he had delivered in that gymnasium. Three people who were in the audience that day in 1962 listened again last Tuesday as the recording was played at the university's James B. Hunt Library. Herbert Tillman, who was about 17 years old at the time, recalled how happy they were to see and hear such an inspiring leader. “Everybody was attentive to what he had to say,'' Tillman said. “And the words that he brought to Rocky Mount were words of encouragement that we really needed in Rocky Mount at that time.'' Barber said this newly available recording of King's earlier speech _ urging blacks to focus on voting rights and peacefully but forcefully push for change _ is just as inspiring today. “Make no mistake. This kind of oratory is dangerous,'' Barber said, “especially for those who want to go back, especially for those who want the status quo because this kind of oratory can loose the captive and set people free to stand up and fight for their own freedom.'' ___ Martha Waggoner can be reached at http:// twitter.com/mjwaggonernc By Martha Waggoner THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Like N.W.A, 'Straight Outta Compton' likely to inspire imitations after massive opening and brash alternative to the usual summer spectacles _ arrived with a wave of enthusiasm behind it, rising to the level of must-see cultural flashpoint. The social conditions of N.W.A's rise from South Central Los Angeles also bear particular relevance to recent protests over abusive and biased police enforcement. On Sunday, filmmaker Ava DuVernay, whose Oscar-nominated January release “Selma'' struggled at the box office despite rave reviews and similar relevance, tweeted a passionate response to “Compton,'' saying it “captured the plight of the black artist.'' NEW YORK _ Underestimate the crossover appeal of N.W.A at your peril. More than 25 years after the Los Angeles hip-hop group went double platinum with their unheralded debut album largely without the benefit of radio play, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and the rest shook up Hollywood in the dog days of summer. “Straight Outta Compton,'' the N.W.A biopic produced by Cube and Dre, blew away industry expectations over the weekend with a $60.2 million debut, even higher than the $56.1 estimated on Sunday. The film, co-financed by Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures for just $29 million, was propelled by the excitement stirred up by the film's trailer, savvy digital marketing, strong reviews and the same kind of audacity that made

N.W.A famous in the first place. Just as N.W.A's debut album stood out from the pack in 1988 when hair metal bands like Def Leppard and Guns N'Roses were dominating the airwaves, “Straight Outta Compton'' stands far apart from the majority of movies to land at the multiplex this summer. The only other film with a largely African American cast to hit theatres this summer was the independently made “Dope.'' It's a long term trend that's found increasing scrutiny. A recent study by the University of Southern California found that nearly three-quarters of all speaking or named characters in the top 100 highest-grossing movies of 2014 were white. So “Straight Outta Compton'' _ a fresh

“We rapped along, clapped, laughed, cried. For all that has happened,'' said DuVernay. “All the stifling of our voices as young black people in that place at that time while a war was going on against us.'' The success of “Straight Outta Compton'' could encourage studios to embrace more racially charged stories. Certainly, many will hope for such an effect, even if it stands against the prevailing risk-adverse nature of today's Hollywood. “I don't think this movie is going to change anything, but I do think we're in the midst of a change. I think it's subtle,'' says David Poland, editor of Movie City News. “There is going to be a little less resistance in the next couple of years to movies about women and movies about people of colour and things like rap _ cultural

things of the generation that is now 30.'' Before Universal jumped in, Warner Bros. passed on “Straight Outta Compton'' in part because of the project's riskiness. Those concerns earlier appeared to be justified. Marion “Suge'' Knight, who's portrayed in the film, is awaiting trial for allegedly running over two men in January after an altercation with Cle ``Bone'' Sloan, a technical adviser on the movie. There were also fears of violence at theatres, particularly after several shootings at movie theatres in recent months. Universal helped some theatres pay for extra security, but no violence materialized. What did materialize was the diverse audience of a mainstream hit. According to Universal, the film, which stars Corey Hawkins (as Dr. Dre), O'Shea Jackson Jr. (as his father, Ice Cube) and Jason Mitchell (as Eazy-E) was 46 per cent African American, 23 per cent Caucasian and 21 per cent Hispanic. “This is a universal story,'' said director F. Gary Gray in an earlier interview. “It can inspire people from all walks of life. And if you hire unknowns, the story will stand on its own. You won't be distracted by a celebrity mimicking another celebrity.''

Compton'' has already inspired more films like it, even if N.W.A remains a singular entity particularly ripe for the biopic treatment. “I guarantee executives before this movie opened were having conversations about what kind of rap biopic can we do next, what's the next landmark story that hasn't been told,'' said Contrino. “This will definitely lead to a new wave of music biopics.'' For now, the force of “Straight Outta Compton'' has startled Hollywood in the usually quiet late summer days _ about the same time of year that N.W.A's debut shocked the country in early September 1988. “The release date turned out to be perfect in terms of audiences being ready for something of substance that's also entertaining,'' said Nick Carpou, head of domestic distribution for Universal. “This kind of result points to the fact that there was an audience out there for this. And boy did they come out.'' _ By Jake Coyle And Lindsey Bahr THE ASSOCIATED PRESS __ Bahr reported from Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Christophe Ena)

Like Bolt, Fraser-Pryce came into the championships with two Olympic and two world titles in the 100. And after Bolt ran to his third gold on Sunday, Fraser-Pryce did likewise on Monday. Unlike the thrilling come-from-behind win of the lunging Bolt in Sunday's final, Fraser-Pryce bolted from the blocks, powered through midway and was able to lift her right arm and index finger in victory as she crossed the line in 10.76 seconds. Behind her, former heptathlete Dafne Schippers set a second Dutch record of the night for silver in 10.81, edging Tori Bowie of the United States by .05 seconds. Bolt is known around the world for his signature “Lightning Bolt'' pose, and Fraser-Pryce has made spectacular hairdos her specialty. She won the 2013 world title with bright pink hair, but it was all daisy and grass-green locks in Beijing. Again, it worked to perfection in another Jamaican victory over their American sprint rivals.

Gatlin made eye contact with his mother just before receiving his medal from IAAF President Lamine Diack. He seemed perturbed and his eyes wandered into the stands as Diack approached to place the medal around his neck. BEIJING (AP) _ If you heckle Justin Gatlin's mom, he will respond _ even if he's in the middle of an awards ceremony. Standing on the podium after receiving his 100-meter silver medal Monday at the world championships, the American sprinter gestured toward a heckler who was bothering his mother in the stands. He scowled and pointed in the direction of the offender. “I was like, 'Hey, chill out with that. Be a gentleman,''' Gatlin told The Associated Press. Gatlin has been a controversial figure in the sport since his return from a four-year doping ban in 2010. After losing to Usain Bolt in a tight race the night before, Gatlin was asked over and over if he thought his loss was good for sprinting. There were some who portrayed his race with Bolt as “Good vs. Evil.''

Once Diack moved past him to give Bolt his gold medal, Gatlin glared at someone and then pointed with his right finger. He said he could tell the person confronting his mother wasn't being friendly. “I could see it in my mom's face,'' the 33-year-old Gatlin said. “Because she's my mom.'' Gatlin returns to the track Tuesday for the opening round of the 200. He is trying to forget about his stumble that cost him a chance at beating Bolt in the 100 and is looking forward to another shot against the powerful Jamaican. “I am in a good place,'' Gatlin said. “I feel really excited about the 200. I think I can do some damage.'' By Pat Graham THE ASSOCIATED PRESS (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein)

Judge overturns Terrence Howard’s divorce settlement after finding actor coerced by ex wife Ghent’s attorneys declined immediate comment, saying they would release a statement later Monday. Lewis presided over a four-day hearing that revealed numerous private details about the Oscar-nominated actor, including that he had cheated on Ghent during their engagement, he was physically violent with his first wife, and he has already divorced his third wife.

LOS ANGELES _ A judge overturned Terrence Howard’s divorce settlement with his second wife Monday, finding the actor was coerced into signing the settlement by her threats to leak private details. Superior Court Judge Thomas Trent Lewis’ ruling means Howard and his ex-wife, Michelle Ghent, will now have to renegotiate the financial terms of their divorce. The ruling also ends, for now, any claims Ghent has to Howard’s earnings from the hit TV show “Empire.’’ “The evidence of extortion or duress was unrebutted,’’ Lewis said. Howard contended he signed a 2012 settlement to end his marriage to Ghent out of fear she would leak private details about him, including phone sex record-

ings with other women and a video of him dancing naked in a bathroom. The agreement entitled Ghent to a share of Howard’s earnings, which would include a portion of his salary from the hit Fox series ``Empire,’’ which opens its second season in the fall. “I could not be any more pleased by today’s ruling,’’ Howard wrote in a statement issued after the ruling. Ghent’s lawyers have said she denied extorting the actor in a deposition and argued he didn’t prove threats she made in 2011 forced him to sign the agreement a year later. She was not allowed to testify at a recent hearing because her attorneys did not file a sworn declaration from her before the proceedings began.

Lewis also heard a 2011 call in which Ghent berated Howard and threatened to sell private information about him if he didn’t pay her money by the end of the day. Howard’s accountant sent Ghent $40,000 in response to the call, which he called “hush money.’’ The actor called it “blood money.’’ He told Lewis that leaking the information at the time would have ended his acting career. Ghent has accused Howard of multiple instances of domestic violence and has an active restraining order against the actor. Howard, 46, has denied he abused Ghent.

ly doesn’t mean you can’t be bullied.’’ The actor was nominated for an Academy Award for his starring role in 2005’s ``Hustle & Flow.’’ His career has resurged since the debut of “Empire,’’ a hit series for Fox that had steadily improved ratings each week in its first season. The show’s second season, set to debut on Sept. 23, is highly anticipated. Work on the show’s second season continues. Howard spent four days in court during a recent hearing, testifying for portions of three of those days. His absence didn’t impact the show’s shooting schedule. Howard’s attorney, Brian Kramer, praised the ruling and its impact on Howard’s life. “Today’s ruling represents not only a watershed event in the life of Mr. Terrence Howard whose financial livelihood was hanging in the balance, but it’s a precedent setting ruling that will have implications for the entire family law bench and bar in California,’’ Kramer wrote in a statement.

Lewis cited the ugly details of the case and said it was clear Howard had mistreated Ghent.

Teyonah Parris depicts 'going natural' with her hair in season 2 of 'Survivor's Remorse' its second season last Saturday (9:30 p.m. EDT). In the first episode, Missy decides to “go natural'' by not using relaxer in her curly hair. She cuts her hair very short, and viewers see her reaction. The process is a personal one for Parris, who stopped using relaxer five years ago.

NEW YORK _ Teyonah Parris' character, Missy, undergoes an emotionally charged transition in the second season of Starz's “Survivor's Remorse.'' Jessie T. Usher also stars in the comedy about a pro basketball player and his family living in Atlanta. The show returned for

“I was in New York and I saw this young woman with a very beautiful (natural) hairstyle and I said to my friend, 'I wish my hair could do that,' and she said, 'Oh, it could.' And I said, 'No, no, no. My hair's too straight.' And she looked at me and she said, 'Because you relax it, but if you didn't your hair could do that.' And it was really an aha mo-

ment. ... I had been getting my hair relaxed since I was maybe 9 years old, so I decided to embark on that journey.'' She and showrunner Mike O'Malley thought it would be interesting for her character to go through that process as well. “We're in a time right now where a lot of women of colour are starting to consider and embrace just wearing their hair as it naturally grows out of their head and not using chemical processes any longer to straighten,'' Parris said. “It can be quite a transition because we have been bombarded for so long ... about what beauty is and it's a very Eurocentric idea. To decide to go against that and embrace what you actually

look like, it can be quite shocking.'' Parris said Missy's experience of going natural is just one example of how it can play out. “It's important to see yourself in the experiences that you may go through reflected in art, and I'm glad we're exploring it a bit,'' she said. “This is one woman's story.'' NEW YORK _ “Straight Outta Compton'' easily maintained its box-office lead with an estimated $26.8 million in ticket sales over a sleepy late summer weekend at North American multiplexes, according to studio estimates Sunday. Universal's N.W.A biopic, a much buzzed-about hit, dominated over the late August releases that often characterize Hollywood's dog days of summer. It has now made $111.5 million in two weeks, and continued to drive moviegoers, both male and female, despite renewed charges of misogyny in N.W.A lyrics and the film overlooking claims of Dr. Dre's abuse

In a statement last Friday, the rapper and producer of “Straight Outta Compton'' said: “I apologize to the women I've hurt. I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.'' Of the weekend's new releases, the low-budget horror sequel “Sinister 2'' fared best, opening with an estimated $10.6 million for the Blumhouse production _ well below the $18 million the 2012 original debuted with. The result was good enough for third place, behind Paramount's ``Mission: Impossible _ Rogue Nation,'' which made $11.7 million in its fourth weekend of release. Fox's assassin thriller “Hitman: Agent 47,'' the second attempt in eight years to adapt the popular video game, disappointed with $8.2 million. It will hope to do better abroad,

where the 2007 original made $60.3 million. It began with $8.5 million over the weekend internationally. Lionsgate's stoner action-comedy “American Ultra,'' starring Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg, also failed to spark much interest, opening with $5.5 million. The three new releases _ all violent, R-rated, poorly reviewed options _ divided up a similar audience. The box office was down 7.5 per cent from the same weekend last year, according to box-office data firm Rentrak. Without a much-anticipated release scheduled over the next two weeks, the lull is likely to continue through Labor Day weekend. In limited release, Sony Pictures Classics “Grandma,'' a well-reviewed comedy starring Lily Tomlin, opened on four screens with a strong per-screen average of $30,214.
