KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Education officials say a school crossing guard in Jamaica has been fatally shot by masked gunmen while she was working just outside a primary school. A statement from Jamaica’s education ministry says crossing guard Natalee Gayle was fatally shot Monday morning by her attackers while helping youngsters cross a road in the southern parish of Clarendon. No children were hit. A bloodied Gayle ran through the school compound to try and escape her attackers. She collapsed by the principal’s office and was later pronounced dead. Youngsters and staff at Kilsyth Primary and Infant School were deeply traumatized. Classes were suspended and arrangements were made for counsellors to visit the school when it reopens Tuesday. There have been no arrests and no probably motive has been provided by Jamaican police. The Associated Press

The World Disney World’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride to be closed during summer for repairs
ORLANDO, Fla. _ Captain Jack Sparrow is taking shore leave for the summer. Pirates of the Caribbean, the popular ride at Walt Disney World, will be closed from mid-May through the end of September. The Orlando Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1B0O5AQ ) reported Tuesday that the ride is undergoing a routine refurbishment. Disney officials say the repairs aren’t safety related. It’s not the first time the ride has been closed for repairs. It was closed for four months almost a decade ago while new characters were added to comport with the film adaptations starring Johnny Depp.

CASTRIES, Saint Lucia _ St. Lucia's prime minister says independent investigators are alleging that the island's police force maintained a “death list'' of people deemed to be criminals and planted guns at the scenes of police shootings.
Quoting from the report, Anthony says investigators found that all the shootings reviewed were “staged by the police to legitimize their actions'' and guns were planted by officers. The killings occurred during a security initiative called “Operation Restore Confidence.''

Madison, about 80 miles (130 kilometres) west of Milwaukee, is the state capital and home to the University of Wisconsin's flagship campus. About 7 per cent of the city's 243,000 residents are black.

MADISON, Wis. _ A 19-year-old black man who died after being shot by a white police officer was unarmed, the Madison police chief said Saturday, assuring protesters who earlier in the day had chanted “Black Lives Matter'' that his department would defend their rights to gather while imploring the community to express their anger with “responsibility and restraint.'' Tony Robinson was shot Friday night after assaulting Officer Matt Kenny, Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said. Kenny was injured, Koval said, but didn't provide details. It wasn't clear whether Robinson, who died at a hospital, was alone in the apartment. “He was unarmed. That's going to make this all the more complicated for the investigators, for the public to accept,'' Koval said during a news conference. Police department spokesman Joel DeSpain said Kenny would not have been wearing a body camera. Several dozen protesters gathered earlier Saturday outside of the Dane County Public Safety Building holding signs that read “Black Lives Matter'' _ a slogan adopted by activists and
protesters around the U.S. after recent officer-involved deaths of unarmed blacks _ before walking toward the neighbourhood where the shooting took place. Protesters also shouted the slogan Friday night. Koval, who struck a conciliatory tone during Saturday's news conference, said he understood the anger and distrust taking hold in the community and that “for those who do want to take to the street and protest,'' his department would be there to “defend, facilitate, foster those First Amendment rights of assembly and freedom of speech.'' He also asked protesters to follow what he said was the lead of Robinson's family in asking for “nondestructive'' demonstrations. Kenny has more than 12 years of experience, Koval said, and was involved in a 2007 shooting but was cleared of any wrongdoing because it was a “suicide by cop-type'' situation. He has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of this investigation by the state's Division of Criminal Investigation and the Dane County District Attorney's review of
that investigation. A 2014 Wisconsin law requires police departments to have outside agencies probe officer-involved deaths after three high-profile incidents within a decade _ including one in Madison _ didn't result in criminal charges, raising questions from the victims' families about the integrity of the nvestigations. State Attorney General Brad Schimel said the department will not share details of the investigation until it is finished. “We are resolved that the result of that investigation will be one in which the public can have confidence,'' he added. The shooting came days after the U.S. Justice Department cleared Darren Wilson, the white former Ferguson, Missouri, officer who shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was black and unarmed, of federal civil rights charges. A second report found patterns of racial profiling, bigotry and profit-driven law enforcement and court practices in the St. Louis suburb. There have been several high-profile
Koval said police responded to a call about 6:30 p.m. Friday of a person jumping into traffic. A second call to police said the man was “responsible for a battery,'' Koval said. Kenny went to an apartment and forced his way inside after hearing a disturbance. Koval said the officer was assaulted by Robinson, and then fired at him. Late Saturday afternoon, people filled the Fountain of Life Covenant Church for a community meeting. Family members took the stage and read a statement prepared by Robinson's mother, Andrea Irwin. “I can't even compute what has happened,'' Irwin's statement said. “I haven't even had a chance to see his body.'' She was not present, and the statement said she was taking time to grieve with her children. Robinson's grandmother, Sharon Irwin, was on the stage as the statement was read, but left immediately after. Koval, who said he went to Robinson's mother's house overnight and spoke with the 19-year-old's grandparents, expressed his sympathy Saturday, saying, “19 years old is too young.'' Canadian rapper Shad to replace Jian Ghomeshi as host of CBC's 'Q' curious. He has searing intellect and empathy. And to me, that's a foundation on which to build.'' His peers are confident he can handle it. “He may not have a broadcast degree, but if you've been playing stages for 10 years, I think that's something you can't learn in school,'' said Canadian hip-hop DJ Skratch Bastid, who produced several tracks on Shad's most recent record, 2013's “Flying Colours.'' “If anyone's heard Shad's freestyle skills, you know he's pretty good at improvisation.'' The search for a new “Q'' host generated much interest, given the details of Ghomeshi's departure.

TORONTO _ After contemplating hundreds of potential candidates, the CBC is convinced that new “Q'' host Shad can succeed with flying colours. The 32-year-old rapper will soon take over the popular cultural affairs radio show, which was helmed by Jian Ghomeshi until he was fired last year. “I'm a little surprised this morning when people have said this is a bold or courageous decision, because I'm just so confident about it,'' said Cindy Witten, interim executive director of English-language CBC-Radio. “(Shad) is so extremely bright, a really curious guy, he's clearly passionate about arts and culture in this country,'' she added. “He's going to be so charming. I think he's going to really resonate with ... the core 'Q' listener, and I actually think he's going to bring new audiences to 'Q.'''

Since issuing his debut record “When The Music's Over'' in 2005, he's been shortlisted several times for the Polaris Music Prize, earned plaudits from Chicago rap titan Kanye West, and reeled in three Juno nominations. Notably, Shad upset Toronto's Drake to win the 2011 Juno trophy for rap recording of the year for his ambitious “TSOL,'' memorably joking in acceptance: “This is like the Emmy going to Theo's friend Cockroach or something.'' Shad was among a rotating cast of guest hosts who had been steering the show since Ghomeshi was let go in October. Those stints wound up being a sort of audition, and Shad impressed.
he takes over April 20 _ will have a more spontaneous, live feeling than before, with even more music. Given the show's sprawling scope, Shad will need to prepare to discuss almost any issue. “What we had with Jian was someone who could interview artists, authors, actors and musicians with great ease,'' said Marion Coomey, a professor in Ryerson University's RTA School of Media. “Shad is going to have to be someone who can interview everybody.'' A longtime “Q'' listener, Coomey praised Shad's “energetic'' and “engaged'' performance as guest host, though she noted that his lack of broadcast experience means there will be a “learning curve.'' Witten agreed.
The announcement followed a cross-country search during which Witten said the CBC assembled a list of nearly 250 possible hosts.
“He had the instincts to pull out those really special moments (in his interviews),'' Witten pointed out.
“I wouldn't say he's a brilliant broadcaster or interviewer, and I don't think Shad would say that either,'' said the CBC executive.

Ghomeshi, who has admitted to engaging in rough sex but said it was consensual, faces seven counts of sexual assault and one of overcoming resistance by choking. The alleged assaults for which he is charged occurred between 2002 and 2008. Witten insists that Shad isn't inheriting a broken property. She said that “Q'' has actually built its audience since Ghomeshi's departure, with ratings only starting to “soften slightly'' in the past few weeks _ but still staying above the same period last year. Still, she acknowledges that the saga has been hard on staff. “It was obviously really challenging around here last fall,'' she said. “But I feel like the cloud's lifting. I feel like we've turned a corner.'' Shad was not available for an interview on Wednesday. CBC said he would be speaking to reporters on Thursday. Vision/ Winter 2015 Music Jamaica moving to reclaim global dominance in reggae, island's best known cultural export understand and celebrate the unique and rich history of Jamaican music and do whatever we can to support it, there is no practical way to stop anyone else from tapping in and drawing something from the culture,'' he said. Few Jamaicans argue there is any troubling cultural appropriation going on with foreign artists who embrace their music. Still, local musicians want better opportunities to make money and reach audiences abroad playing the island's top cultural export. Just like everywhere else, Jamaican performers have scrambled to offset losses from plunging CD sales when consumers simply download music for free. And while dancehall reggae stars like Sean Paul and Beenie Man have notched international hits over the years, other current Jamaican acts have had difficulty building fan bases overseas due to difficulty securing visas, among other issues.
In this Feb. 18, 2015 photo, Jamaican singer Jah Bouks, whose given name is Warin Smith, entertains the crowd at a show organized by the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association during the island's "reggae month," in Kingston, Jamaica. To get a stronger foothold in the information age, Jamaican officials and reggae industry insiders are brainstorming ways to better capitalize on Jamaica’s exuberant music culture and help protect what some claim is local intellectual property. KINGSTON, Jamaica _ For decades, the sound of Jamaica has been reggae, the infectious, uniquely syncopated music that transformed the small Caribbean island into a cultural powerhouse. But the genre's success has taken it far beyond its roots, and now many in Jamaica worry that reggae-lovers abroad are forgetting the motherland where it was born. “Reggae was given to the world by Jamaica so nobody can or ever should discourage anyone overseas from making this music. But we think there should be acknowledgment that reggae was created in Jamaica,'' said Michael “Ibo'' Cooper, a musician who is chairman of the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association. Around the world, music festivals celebrating the sounds made famous by reggae patron saint Bob Marley and followers who developed the faster, brasher derivative of dancehall are more likely to be headlined by bands from places like California or France than by native-born Jamaicans. Aside from albums by the late Marley or his progeny, few of the top-selling reggae CDs or downloads come from Jamaican artists. To get a stronger foothold in the information age, Jamaican officials and reggae industry insiders are brainstorming ways to better capitalize on Jamaica's
exuberant music culture and help protect what some claim is local intellectual property. After years of only piecemeal support, the government increasingly is viewing reggae and other cultural enterprises as a hoped-for economic engine on the island. Officials are hashing over the creation of a certification mark to designate “authentic reggae'' _ a sort of “Good Housekeeping Seal'' _ to encourage the use of Jamaican musicians, producers and merchandise. They also hope to defend Jamaican reggae by having the U.N.'s culture organization add it to a global list of “intangible cultural heritage '' such as Argentina's tango and China's Peking opera. The Paris-based agency says the island's government has yet to apply for inclusion on the list of more than 280 cultural traditions. Rob Bowman, a music professor from Canada's York University who has researched intellectual property and Jamaican music, said that while population numbers mean reggae's biggest markets always will be overseas there's no reason why more revenue streams from foreign commerce shouldn't flow back to Jamaica. “With few exceptions, these styles of music cannot be authentically replicated by non-Jamaicans. As such, these styles of music represent intellectual property that is, for all intents and
purposes, already a part of Jamaica's branding,'' Bowman asserts in a World Intellectual Property Organization consultancy report for Jamaica. A country of fewer than 3 million people, Jamaica has had remarkable success originating influential musical forms such as ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub and dancehall. Musicologists say production innovations and the discovery of “toasting,'' reggae deejays chanting over a beat, directly inspired hip-hop. A cross-pollination of Afro-Caribbean folk music and American R&B, reggae first was introduced to Europe by Jamaican migrants settling in Britain in the late 1960s. Its popularity exploded in the 1970s with the rise of Marley and other Jamaican Rastafarian stars, whose music influenced British groups like The Clash, UB40 and The English Beat. Jamaican music later shaped U.S. bands like No Doubt and Sublime. Eric Smith, CEO of the New York-based reggae label Easy Star Records, said American bands are succeeding now due to their strong “do-it-yourself'' ethos and online marketing, a key to making it in independent music. Unlike some earlier non-Jamaican reggae artists who adopted island patois and themes, they use the genres to highlight their own U.S. culture, not Jamaica's. “While we certainly need to respect,
Jamaican artists say sustained support from the government could give the local music industry a much-needed boost and help prepare musicians to get a greater slice of the international market. There's high hope for emerging artists like Chronnix, the most prominent member of a burgeoning scene dubbed “reggae revival'' whose young artists are building their careers with a savvy understanding of social media. Jamaica celebrates “reggae month'' each February. This year, events included workshops on intellectual property for up-and-coming musicians. The island's biggest university also recently hosted an international reggae conference, where the global business of reggae was a featured topic. While non-Jamaican reggae artists are having the most success with the niche genre, Smith and others believe it's only a matter of time before Jamaicans dominate reggae again. “Over the years, the popularity of Jamaican music has fallen at times only to give way to a new explosion of creativity and popularity as Jamaica reinvents itself and shows the world once again what a musical powerhouse it is,'' Smith said from New York. The Album About Nothing
ludaversal Ludacris
Kendrick Lamar recently announced the March 23 release date for his next album, the hugely-anticipated follow-up to 2012’s good kid, m.A.A.d. city. While details on that currently untitled album are still scarce, he just posted the above image to his Instagram account. It’s not yet confirmed, but given the “Parental Advisory” tag and this tweet from TDE label boss Anthony Tiffith, it’s very possible that it’s the album’s artwork. Update: The title of the album is, indeed, To Pimp a Butterfly, Rolling Stone reports.
Reggae recording star, and 3 time JUNO Award winner Exco Levi has announced a date for the launch of his debut album, Country man; After his 15 years of recording experience including almost 100 singles which has earned him multiple awards in Canada, the US and Jamaica, Exco is ready to release the 19 track album produced by Donovan Germaine for Penthouse Records and Exco’s newly formed High Priest Records The deeply personal album which was written by Exco, bears songs that describe his challenges as a new immigrant to Canada, the mind set of children who are not on the right path, and Levi’s reliance on God for strength and support throughout the good and not so good times in his life.
Continuing with the “Seinfeld” theme from his mixtapes; rapper Wale’s next album will be called “The Album About Nothing” and is set for a March 31 release date. The 14-track album will include features from J. Cole, SZA, Usher and Jeremih, as well as production from Jake One, DJ Khalil and more.
Ludacris’ album Ludaversal has been forthcoming for quite some time. After numerous push backs, the Atlanta-based rapper and actor has finally stamped down a more sturdy release date and recently has given out some details about the album. A video released by Revolt TV shows Ludacris talking about the album during a listening party. David Banner, Big K.R.I.T. and Usher all make the cut on the forthcoming LP.

Bosh addresses Heat in his 1st visit since illness struck, expecting to be back next season his usual self. His physical exertion is strictly limited and he just recently started driving around the block. “Do a little bit of walking every day, just trying to get better,'' Bosh said. “Just take time to reflect, sit outside and enjoy this beautiful weather and appreciate it.'' It was a busy Monday for Bosh. Earlier, 35 Heat employees arrived via bus at his house and surprised him by dropping off 10,000 get-well cards. Bosh was in the driveway, basking in the sun and beaming as he held one of the many overstuffed boxes. Bosh said there were discussions weeks ago about whether he would ever be able to play again, but that those conversations quickly ended. “I knew I was going to play basketball again,'' Bosh said. He was on the court Monday, meeting a soldier who was being honoured pregame by the Heat and then briefly addressing the crowd.
MIAMI _ Back in the Miami Heat locker room for the first time in nearly a month, Chris Bosh had things he needed to say. His teammates hung on every word. Bosh gave an impromptu speech on Monday night, his first time around the Heat since being diagnosed last month with blood clots on a lung that threatened his life _ but only took away his season. He told them how his biggest pain now is not being able to play basketball, reminding them not to take anything for granted. “It was great having him here,'' Heat guard Dwyane Wade said. It won't be such an uncommon occurrence for much longer.
Bosh is getting closer to recovery and a return to the NBA. The Heat revealed he could be cleared to start regularly exercising later this month, and is scheduled to resume “full basketball activities'' in September. “All the love and energy has really, really allowed me to be back here,'' Bosh said. “Not under the circumstances I want to be, but beggars can't be choosers. Very happy to be here and I'm doing a lot better.'' Bosh has no way of really knowing, but figures he played with the clots on his lung _ a dangerous situation, to say the least. I'm imagining I did, yeah,'' Bosh said. “Some days were rough. Some weren't. ... I just wanted to play ball.'' Bosh looks normal, but he's far from
“I want to thank each and every one of you for all the love,'' he said, urging fans to support Miami's push toward a playoff spot. Bosh lined up alongside his teammates for the national anthem. He then took a spot on the bench for the game, encouraging and chatting with teammates and coaches in the Heat's 100-90 loss to the Celtics. His last game with the Heat was Feb. 11, just before the start of the All-Star break. Bosh was dealing with pain in his side and back for some time (even seeking help from a chiropractor at one point), but went to All-Star weekend in New York anyway _ teaming with Dominique Wilkins and Swin Cash to win the Shooting Stars competition at the league's midseason showcase for the third straight year. He then went on vacation to Haiti for a few days. The pain intensified and eventually Bosh went to the hospital to get checked out. Then came the news that scared
so many, especially since the same issue _ blood clots finding their way to a lung _ caused former NBA player Jerome Kersey to die that same week. Bosh, somehow, wasn't worried. “I don't know why,'' Bosh said. “It just didn't come as a scary thing at the time.'' After about a week in the hospital, Bosh went home and has been trying to remain patient since. “He sends me texts during the game, things like 'Shoot the ball, 3''' Wade said. “He knows I don't see them until after. But it makes him feel better.'' Wade and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, visited with Bosh and his wife, Adrienne, after Saturday's Heat win over Sacramento game, catching up over red wine and conversation. Adrienne Bosh was the one who talked her husband into finally going to the hospital. “She saves my life on a daily basis,'' Bosh said. Wade said Bosh has been inspiring even in his absence. The Heat are a banged-up team right now, with about half the roster dealing with legitimate injuries. Wade's one of them, and when his sore hip has acted up in recent days, he said he's talked his way through it in part by reminding himself that Bosh is going through something much more serious. “We've talked about how blessed and how fortunate, how privileged we are, to be involved in this game,'' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “For the guys who are able to compete out there, even if you don't feel 100 per cent, it's an incredible honour. “And CB would do just about anything to be out there right now.'' Review: 'Goldeneye' offers unique history of Jamaica through the eyes of James Bond's creator actor and playwright Noel Coward, and Parker carefully compares and dissects how the island and its residents are depicted in each man's writing. Mostly, they viewed Jamaica as a backdrop, at best, where the “island natives'' are cheerful and sexy but never threatening.
“Goldeneye'' (Pegasus Books), by Matthew Parker James Bond is a British icon, but the fictional spy hero really was born in Jamaica, just as the Caribbean island gained its independence from the waning British empire. The relationship be-
tween Bond's author, Ian Fleming, and the island where he sought to escape from dreary post-war Britain is explored in Matthew Parker's unique biography, “Goldeneye.'' Fleming wrote all the Bond short stories and novels, which inspired an ongoing series of blockbuster films, at

his Goldeneye estate on Jamaica's northern shore. He spent two months every year, from 1946 through his death in 1964, at Goldeneye, and for a while his own boozy, cigarette-fueled seductions rivaled those he created for Bond. Fleming's neighbour in Jamaica was the British
The fading of an empire weighed on Fleming as he developed escapist fantasies for Bond, the paragon of British intelligence and power. He found rich source material in Jamaican waters for Bond's underwater action scenes, but he rarely troubled himself with island drama beyond his jet-set social circle. Parker explores where Fleming would not, delving into Jamaica's politics and economy, the legacy of 300 years of colonial rule
and the emergence of the island as a tourist destination, a development fueled partly by the glamour projected by Fleming and his friends. He also spells out what Coward and Fleming didn't see coming _ that their tropical-yet-British hideaway would be short-lived, and the island was ready for a change. Parker's “Goldeneye'' is an appealing Caribbean history dressed as pop culture, and he adds complexity to Bond's legacy of vodka martinis, car chases and women in bikinis.
