The Caribbean Guyana to boost relief efforts amid worsening drought

March 16th - 31st 2016

Charges withdrawn against Mandela grandson accused of rape The Mandela grandson was arrested and charged with rape and attempted rape last year. He was later released on bail of nearly $540.

Members of the Mandela family attended Wednesday’s hearing that lasted about an hour, Louw said.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana _ Guyana says it is creating a special task force to improve relief efforts amid a prolonged drought that has shriveled crops across the South American country. The office of President David Granger made the announcement Friday after farmers reported losing more than 7,000 acres (2,830 hectares) of rice fields and hundreds of acres (hectares) of cassava and peanut fields. Farmers also have complained that they have not received any water from the government’s emergency irrigation canals. Rice is one of Guyana’s main exports. Granger has said there’s a need to drill more wells because Guyana has not received significant rainfall for almost 10 months. The Associated Press

JOHANNESBURG _ Criminal charges have been withdrawn against one of Nelson Mandela’s grandsons accused of raping a teenage girl, a spokeswoman for South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority said on Wednesday. The state withdrew the charges against him for further investigation after new evidence was discovered, said spokeswoman Phindi Louw. Withdrawing the case while the investigation continued was in the interest of the teenage girl, “rather than subjecting her to postponements,” Louw said.

“He’s basically free for now up until the state decides whether we will be proceeding with criminal charges,” said Louw. The Mandela grandson, in his mid-twenties, was accused of raping the teenager at a Johannesburg restaurant in August last year. Under South African law related to sexual assault cases, the man may not be named. By Lynsey Chutel THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

HAVANA _ The U.S. is loosening rules on travel to Cuba and the Cuban government’s use of the dollar, removing obstacles to closer ties between the two countries five days before President Barack Obama makes a historic trip to Havana. The Obama administration announced Tuesday that Americans can now take “people-to-people’’ trips to Cuba on their own instead of on expensive group tours. That means any American can legally go to Cuba as long as they fill out a form asserting that their trip was for educational purposes instead of tourism. The measure is expected to help fill demand for direct flights that U.S. airlines hope to launch in coming months. The new measures also allow U.S. banks to process Cuban government transactions that pass even momentarily through the U.S. banking system. A ban on those transactions crippled Cuba’s ability to buy and sell goods internationally and become one of Cuba’s biggest complains about the U.S. trade embargo on the island. The Associated Press

Ferguson council could soon accept DOJ reform deal

Guyana pledges to ease overcrowding after fatal prison riot

GEORGETOWN, Guyana _ The South American country of Guyana says it will hire more guards and take steps to ease overcrowding at its main prison, where 17 inmates died in a three-day riot. Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan said Monday that prisons in rural western Guyana are being upgraded to house additional prisoners now being held in the capital of Georgetown. He said the number of guards in the country’s interior also needs to be boosted from 54 to 100. The government recently promised that it also would improve food, speed up trials and increase the number of telephone calls to families. The uprising occurred last Thursday when inmates set mattresses on fire to protest prison conditions. A top prison official has been placed on leave as officials investigate the riot.

FERGUSON, Mo. _ The Ferguson City Council could soon accept a U.S. Justice Department plan to overhaul its embattled police force and municipal court system.

March 10, 2016 - Two police officers who were charged with multiple murders emanating from INDECOM’s investigation into the conduct of police officers in Clarendon applied for bail on March 8 and 9, 2016 and were denied. Mrs. Valerie Neita Robertson, attorney representing Detective Kevin Adams; and Norman Godfrey and Carlton Collman, both of whom represent Con-

stable Collis Brown, applied for bail on their behalf in the Supreme Court and both were denied. Trial is set for Det. Corp. Adams for the fatal shooting of Anthony Trought on September 19, 2016. Plea and case management for Cons. Brown’s matters is set for April 1, 2016.

Elected leaders in the St. Louis suburb where the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown helped spark the Black Lives Matter movement meet Tuesday night to consider final approval of the DOJ consent decree. The agency and Ferguson reached a tentative agreement after months of negotiations. But the council rejected the plan in February over cost concerns, prompting the Justice Department to sue the next day. City leaders have since said they expect to approve the deal after being assured the city won’t be required to provide its police officers with pay raises, a provision they feared could bankrupt Ferguson.

Diaspora Corner returning resident. They say no where better than yard. The newly appointed Foreign Minister hailed the invaluable contribution of members of the diaspora.

In addition to the growth agenda, special attention will also be given to building human capital within tourism, the improvement of attractions and the positioning of Kingston as an ideal destination.

KINGSTON, Jamaica; March 8, 2016: On the heels of the official swearing in of members of the new cabinet, the newly appointed Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, hit the ground running on his first day in office. The Minister, who arrived at approximately 10:00 a.m., took the opportunity to personally greet each member of staff at the New Kingston offices of the Ministry and its agencies and outlined the expectations of each division and entity under the new administration.

ing growth targets. Mr. Bartlett, who previously served as Tourism Minister from 2007-2011, expressed pleasure at returning to the Ministry for a second stint. He stated that in the upcoming weeks, the Ministry of Tourism and its agencies would have to be carefully examined and key strategies employed to effectively meet new objectives.

The series of meetings facilitated warm interaction between the Minister and staff members as he marked a happy return to the Ministry, and the discussions set the tone for the sector moving forward.

“In this new dispensation growth is the mantra. Economic growth and development are the centrepieces of the new administration’s thrust. Tourism has to play a critical and vital role in this regard. We have to go beyond the two and three percent growth we’ve had over the years and get into double digit growth,” he said.

The Minister noted that in keeping with the manifesto outlined by the government, where prosperity and growth are key goals, the tourism industry will be instrumental in achiev-

In doing so, he noted that the Ministry would focus on driving economic returns to the industry and earning more. “So we have to look at value added, greater partnerships with

“We must diversify and expand the range of products that are offered. You won’t get the build-up in arrivals unless you give the people what they want,” said Mr. Bartlett. “Tourism is really about marketing to the passion points of the people. We have to build around those passions so as to drive the demographics that are required to get the earnings that the economy needs,” he added. The Minister emphasized that he has seen a lot of positive work being done within the industry over the years. However, he urged members of staff to note that a lot more can be done to ensure that the industry realizes its full potential. “I am prepared to continue to build on the good work that has been done. The good thing about it is that tourism, over time, has had a succession of good work. Each administration seems to have built on the successes of the past but this one has to be different,” stated Minister Bartlett.

Perspective: PNP Supporters Gone To The Dogs … Frustrated About Poll loss To JLP

Vision readers, you may recall a story we posted of a docile pouch clad in JLP green party colours who had apparently “voted” on March 25, election day and was resting peacefully, unmolested, awaiting the results. Alas, on learning that the JLP had won came to witness fist hand the opening of Parliament. This move by the green clad pouch did not win favour with the frustrated Comrades, as PNP diehards are called.

They stoned and hurled abuses at man’s best friend and threatened to vent their anger even throwing stones, forcing a police officer to intervene on the pouche’s behalf for his safety. It is illegal to cause willful harm to animals as is the case in Canada and many other civilized places. Pickersgill Chairman “For Life” seem still shell shocked at the loss to the JLP. In an exclusive with VISION SIC he said “The JLP has only won by one seat 32 31″

Yes Comrade Pickersgill, you are correct but that is not the whole story, your party, the PNP lost eleven seats you had to the JLP. When you called the election some year and a half before it was constitutionally due you had 42 seats … you now have 31 and retained one by only 5 ballots … and another by 68 ballots. It was a backslide in a real sense. You and your leader Portia Simpson Miller were rejected by the electorate. They were uninspired with your lack of plans going forward and your dismal performance in office. You failed miserably and are now turning to a dog to vent your frustration and disgust. You should hang your heads in shame.

out your frustration on an innocent pouch. An innocent pooch who had nothing to do with poor performance at the polls. As a lawyer, Pickersgill appears to be confused … he ought to know better. The JLP did not lose any of the 21 seats they had prior to the election. The 10 point plan stimulated interest in the electorate who were just fed up with the PNP. Portia’s failure to debate was a no no for voters. They felt disrespected, abused and even

taken for granted. In perspective the loss was inevitable as the 19 dead baby scandal, devaluing dollar, high crime wave, extravagance, Riverton fire, assault and abuse of journalist, Portia refusing to be interviewed etc. The electorate had enough and wanted a change. They reaped what they sewed. Hopeton O’Connor-Dennie is Senior International Correspondent & Photojournalist for Vision Newspaper Canada.

Cultural and Creative Industries vital to Economic Growth – Grange maximized,” the Minister said.

March 16th - 31st 2016

Review: Assassin shows versatility on 1st album in years

Minister Grange also lauded the efforts of organizations such as JAMMS, which have, over the years, played a vital role in educating and assisting members of the music fraternity in doing business in the new media environment whilst fulfilling their mandate of protecting the creators of musical content.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Friday, March 11, 2016 – Minister of Culture, Gender Affairs, Entertainment and Sports (CGES), Honourable Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, has stressed the need for all Jamaicans to recognize the contribution of the Cultural and Creative Industries to the Jamaican economy. She earlier today addressed an audience of Record Producers, Music Publishers, Artists, Songwriters and Composers among other industry players, at the Jamaica Music Society (JAMMS) Music Business Seminar Volume 3, held at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston, under the theme, Music Rights & Music Technology in the New Media Environment. Minister Grange said, “We have a product in which little Jamaica

has a competitive advantage and one which the country as a whole – policy makers, business people and professionals – should help my Ministry to nurture, help us to grow and to expand because the potential for wealth creation and employment opportunities are boundless.” The Minister noted that while the dynamics of these industries are changing and will continue to be influenced by technological advancement, it is paramount that all Jamaicans and industry stakeholders alike “position themselves to take full advantage or at least not to be left behind.” “As members of the industry the importance of being covered under copyright cannot be overstated as that is how earning potential can be

The Minister congratulated JAMMS on its hard work and dedication since 2007, having commenced royalty payouts by December 2009 and been able to distribute over $75 million to rights-owners. She implored the organization to “aim to become a leader in collective management and to operate with the highest standards of integrity and to have the highest service standards to its members and industry.” The Minister emphasised the need for industry players to join the prosperity partnership so that the Cultural and Creative Industries can form part of the growth agenda and creative economy. She also pledged her commitment to setting clear objectives and establishing specific timelines within which to accomplish each, in charting the way forward.

Setting fire from the top, the performer examines the birthmarks of reggae with a modern twist on the title track. It’s followed by “What is Reggae” and “Reggae Origin,” where he simply questions, “Where did it all start? Where did it begin?”

Assassin,”Theory of Reggaetivity” (Sound Age Entertainment) One of Jamaica’s most underrated yet diverse and creative lyricists, Assassin A.K.A. Agent Sasco releases his first studio album in almost a decade. In a transition from dancehall, the artist turns his multi-talented hand to releasing a completely reggae album called “Theory of Reggaetivity.” With guest appearances from Chronixx and Australian singer Elesia Iimura, Assassin _ born Jeffrey Campbell _ takes on topics such as achievement, struggle and love with his new album.

Delivering lyrical precision, Assassin brings humour and energy with “Mix Up,” praises the Motherland in fine style with “Africa” and sends a message of perseverance on “Stronger.” Assassin, whose rugged vocals recently cut through Kanye West’s “I’m In It” and Kendrick Lamar’s “The Blacker the Berry,” shows his softer side on the well-written “Day In Day Out,” offering a sweet melody that uplifts before taking it back to basics with “Country Bus.” By Bianca Roach THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Her lawyers have since asked a judge to terminate the deposition, or at least limit it, citing “a litany of improper and offensive questions'' asked during the first session by the women's attorney, Joseph Cammarata. They said the questions related to Camille Cosby's “own sexual relations, her own political commentary and the death of the Cosbys' son in 1997, among others.'' Ennis Cosby, 27, was shot and killed during a robbery attempt. BOSTON _ Bill Cosby's wife says she shouldn't be subjected to “outrageous questions'' about her sex life and other deeply personal topics in a defamation lawsuit filed by seven women who say the comedian sexually assaulted them decades ago. But a lawyer for the women has asked a judge to step in to make sure Camille Cosby answers more questions in the lawsuit. Camille Cosby sat for the first part of a deposition last month; a second session is scheduled for April 18. A federal judge ruled last month that she had to testify in the deposition but didn't have to answer questions that fell under the Massachusetts marital disqualification rule, which says a spouse doesn't have to testify

“These questions were irrelevant to the issues in this case and plainly were designed to annoy, embarrass, and oppress the witness,'' Camille Cosby's lawyers argued in a court filing Friday. Her lawyers claim Cammarata repeatedly sought irrelevant testimony from Cosby about her opinion of the honesty and integrity of her husband. Cammarata, however, has asked the court to appoint Magistrate Judge David Hennessy to preside over the remainder of Cosby's deposition to deter what he calls “deposition misconduct'' by her and her attorney, Monique Pressley. Cammarata says Cosby refused to

“Judge Hennessy's presence is necessary to deter Mrs. Cosby from further interfering with her own deposition,'' Cammarata wrote in a court filing Monday. The latest squabbling over Camille Cosby's deposition comes as both sides await a ruling from a judge on whether the defamation case will be put on hold while a criminal case against Bill Cosby plays out in Pennsylvania. In that case, Cosby is charged with sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee, at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004. Cosby has pleaded not guilty.

The women in the defamation case claim Cosby tainted their reputations when he allowed his representatives to brand them as liars after they went public with their allegations of sexual assault. They are among approximately 50 women who claim Cosby forced unwanted sexual contact on them decades ago. Cosby denies their allegations. By Denise Lavoie THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Spike Lee on his bold and brash 'Chi raq': 'Art can change the world' an issue, and that the story and skimpy outfits exploited women. There has been praise, too, for the film's eye-popping cinematography, its daring commitment to verse, its experiments with visual style _ not to mention its undeniable topicality.

TORONTO _ Spike Lee's satirical bigscreen musical about gun violence in Chicago certainly isn't subtle. And the provocative director isn't surprised “Chi-raq'' has elicited sustained controversy since before he even began filming. After all, Lee says he was out to make a statement _ or “go for broke,'' as he puts it. “I understand that people are very sensitive about their cities and neighbourhoods and that's not new to me, I will continue to make films and present the truth as I

see it,'' Lee says in a recent phone interview. “I know going in there are going to be people who do not agree.'' Criticism has dogged Lee since word emerged he was tackling black-onblack gun violence and calling the project “Chi-raq,'' a slang reference to the city of Chicago and the thousands of shootings that take place there every year. Immediately, some observers raised concerns: that such a bold approach stigmatized Chicago, that using satire wasn't appropriate for so serious

Nevertheless, Lee has found himself on the defensive. “I would ask women specifically, black women, who had problems with imagery of this film, I would ask them point blank: Did you have problems with the imagery of black women in Beyonce's music video 'Formation'? I think it's very similar,'' he says.

“Lysistrata,'' first performed in 411 BC, the story centres on a woman named Lysistrata, played by Teyonah Parris, who is fed up with a bloody gang war involving her rapper boyfriend Chi-raq, played by Cannon. Lysistrata moves in with her peace activist neighbour, played by Angela Bassett, and grows increasingly outspoken after an 11-year-old neighbourhood girl is caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting. She persuades the wives and girlfriends of each gang member to swear off sex with their men until the fighting stops. Jennifer Hudson plays the young victim's mother, and Lee notes her tragic personal history adds powerful dimension to the storyline. Hudson's mother, brother, and nephew were killed by gun violence in the south side of Chicago in 2008. Lee says he was reluctant to approach Hudson for the role, but that ultimately “she wanted to do it.''

“My film and Beyonce's, they portray women as very strong and independent and in charge of their sexuality.''

“At the same time it was very painful,'' he says, citing a tough scene in which her character scrubs the child's blood from the pavement with a brush and bucket.

Inspired by the Aristophanes play

But there's no sense holding back

with Lee, who acknowledges feeling a sense of urgency in making this film. “America historically is a very violent country _ it glorifies violence through TV, film, whatever and we have to do something about it,'' he says. The film's sprawling storyline allows the film to tackle broader political arguments including unemployment, poverty and mass incarceration. Lee makes no bones about his goal: changing the world. “There always will be debate about whether art can change the world and put me on the side that raises their hand and says, 'Art can change the world','' says Lee. “Art can have an impact, I'm on that side. And I'll always be on that side.'' “Chi-raq'' opens Friday in Toronto, and on iTunes. It heads to Vancouver and Calgary on April 1 By Cassandra Szklarski THE CANADIAN PRESS

Review: Lupita Nyong'o soars in searing play 'Eclipsed'

NEW YORK _ Lupita Nyong'o is a red carpet darling, effortlessly stunning in a Calvin Klein gown or in advertisements as the face of Lancome. So it may come as something of a shock to see her make her Broadway debut in a cheap cloth skirt and filthy “Rugrats'' T-shirt. Nyong'o loses herself utterly in the searing and stunning play “Eclipsed,'' which opened recently at the Golden Theatre, also marking the important Broadway bows for playwright Danai Gurira and director Liesl Tommy. Oscar-winner Nyong'o (“12 Years A Slave'') plays a 15-year-old known

only as The Girl who finds herself enslaved in a rebel compound during a bloody civil war in Africa. The five-member cast _ all women _ is a true ensemble and must not be missed. The play is set during the end of Liberia's 14-year civil war, which ended in 2003. Former Liberian President Charles Taylor and rebel groups opposed to him including LURD _ Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy _ were accused of atrocities, including murder, mutilation, rape and using child soldiers. “Eclipsed'' takes place in a bul-

let-ridden hut on a LURD rebel base headed by a commanding officer, the unseen leader called “CO.'' He has captured two “wives'' _ Saycon Sengbloh plays Wife No. 1, clinging to the status it offers, and Pascale Armand plays pregnant Wife No. 3 as a girlish woman insecure of her looks. Wife No. 2 (Zainab Jah) has left to join the soldiers.

for The Girl's soul _ and, in a sense, of the country itself. The choices are stasis and subjugation in the kitchen, joining the savage male world as a soldier, or embracing the lofty hope of peace, as embodied by a visiting activist, played by Akosua Busia, whose role is not as complex as the others and so sounds somewhat dissonant.

Although there are no men in “Eclipsed,'' their presence is everywhere _ from the military fatigues the women wash and dry to their stomach-churning stories of rape and the moments when the “wives'' stand cowering until one is chosen for sex and goes to her fate offstage. The future of women is shown blocked in this play _ hence the title. It is clear who is doing the blocking.

“You happy with Liberia as it going? You tink dis a nice place?'' she asks. “You tink it normal a boy carrying a gun killing and raping?''

Time and identity is fuzzy here. Trauma means few of the women know their name or where they come from. The Girl is a newcomer when we meet her and wants to reclaim their identities. “I just tink we should know who we are, whot year we got, where we come from,'' she says.

In one running theme, a biography of Bill Clinton makes its way to the wives, who haltingly read it aloud as if it were a romantic thriller. (They quickly identify Monica Lewinsky as “Wife No. 2.'') The political squabbles over Clinton's affair seem somehow ridiculous when compared to the depravity visiting these women.

It is a play that explores the battle

Gurira, who plays the katana-wielding walker assassin Michonne on AMC's “The Walking Dead,'' draws very human portraits of these women, and the audience will be stunned to find itself laughing as they joke in such hell.

Nyong'o goes from childish to fiendish as she tries to find out what she is in this world. Jah is truly frightening as a gun-toting soldier in knockoff Chanel tops who proclaims her freedom from a life of rape. But she is part of the merciless machine of war _ and weirdly hypersexualized, to boot. Armand is a revelation as the gossipy, vain wife who aspires to look like Janet Jackson and is highly attuned to her position. And there is a resignation to Sengbloh's portrayal of Wife No. 1 that is heartbreaking until her newfound sense of identity at the end reveals the hopeful woman inside the broken exterior. The play ends on a somewhat hopeful note, one that is beautifully realized. Gurira's work has been unfairly eclipsed by Lynn Nottage's “Ruined,'' which shares some themes and came out at the same time, but this production proves it is an extraordinary work that shines and shines. Poet activist Sonia Sanchez subject of new documentary “Having seen Sonia Sanchez ‘perform’ her poetry, and experiencing the power of her onstage presence, we knew that she would be an electrifying subject for a documentary,” Attie and Goldwater said in a joint statement.

NEW YORK _ When a team of documentary makers first suggested a movie about her life, Sonia Sanchez resisted. “We come from that generation of being in the civil rights movement. And you never celebrate yourself. That’s the first thing we learned. It’s about the movement and people so you never really talked about yourself,” the poet, playwright, teacher and activist said recently during an interview at a midtown Manhattan hotel. But Barbara Attie, Janet Goldwater and Sabrina Schmidt Gordon kept asking and Sanchez, spirited as ever at 81, finally relented, if only because her children encouraged her to share what she had learned and how she survived. “BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez” airs Tuesday night on World Channel’s “America ReFramed” series. The 90-minute film includes interviews, archival footage and tributes from such artists as Questlove, Mos Def, Ayana Mathis and two who have since died, Amiri Baraka and Ruby Dee.

Sanchez’s life amazes even her. She has published more than a dozen works of poetry, children’s books and other literature. She was a leader of the Black Arts Movement, the artistic wing of the Black Power movement in the 1960s and ’70s. She is a pioneer of African-American studies. She has clashed with the Black Panthers, been harassed by the FBI (for teaching W.E.B. Du Bois among other “subversives”), arrested at protest gatherings and, after overcoming a childhood stammer, cheered by audiences worldwide. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, but moved to Harlem a few years later after the death of her mother and grandmother. A graduate of Hunter College, Sanchez also studied poetry at a workshop run by New Yorker poetry editor Louise Bogan and helped form a writers workshop in Greenwich Village. By the 1960s she was a member of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and had met one of her most important influences, Malcolm X. More than a foot shorter than Malcolm X, Sanchez remembers approaching him after a speech he gave

and sharing some candid thoughts. “I got right behind him and I tapped him on the shoulder and he turned around and he didn’t see me,” she recalled with a laugh. “And he looked down and smiled, and he said, ‘Yes?’ And I said, ‘Mr. X, I don’t believe everything you said.’ “And he looked at me. He had the most beautiful, quiet eyes of any human being on this earth. And he smiled down, with his eyes, and said, ‘One day, you will, my sister.”’ Sanchez sees the poet as a “creator of social values” and the performance as a renewal of ancient rituals: She sings, chants, whispers, clicks her tongue and shouts. Her breakthrough, she remembers, came on a winter’s night at Brown University in the early 1970s. After she read for an hour and a half and thought she was finished, a student requested “a/coltrane/poem,” in which Sanchez mimicked Coltrane’s saxophone with such lines as “”screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeCHHHHHHHHHHH.“ She had never read the poem out loud.

bers coming home from work and hearing the “BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!” of her kids’ rap records. One day, as she was drinking a cup of tea, she asked them who they were listening to. “And they said someone by the name of Tupac Shakur, and I dropped my cup and it broke, because I knew his mother, and she was in the (Black) Panther party, and I knew him as a little boy,” she said, adding that she couldn’t understand his lyrics because he spoke too fast. “And my children were so annoyed with me, they actually said, ‘We have trouble understanding you. You speak so fast.”’ Along with her writing career, Sanchez has been teaching for 50 years, most recently at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she now lives. She remains friendly with many former students, some of whom turn up in unexpected places. In 2006, during the Iraq War, Sanchez and some peers organized the “Granny Peace Brigade.” They entered a military recruitment centre in Philadelphia and asked to enlist. Authorities soon arrived.

“And I said, ‘Here goes nothing.’ Really. And I started reading. But as I got into it, I had enough memory (Sanchez murmurs), hmmm, hmmm, of Coltrane at that particular time that I was able to almost fuse my voice to become what he was doing,” she explained.

“They sent this former detective who comes out to these things. He came out said, ‘We’re going to handcuff you behind the back.’ And we said, ‘We’re not trying to escape.’ Then he came back and said, ‘We’ll handcuff you in front, so maybe it won’t hurt so much.’ And we said, ‘We’re still not trying to escape,”’ Sanchez recalled.

“And there was this silence. And I figured, ‘God damn it, Sonia, you blew it.’ And then they all stood up en masse and started stamping their feet and clapping.”

“The third time, he sent in this young African American officer. And she came in and she looked at me and said, ‘Professor Sanchez, what are you doing here?”’

Hip-hop artists look up to her, but Sanchez acknowledges she didn’t immediately take to the new music. She remem-
