Caribbean Community presses Britain for slavery reparations

GEORGETOWN, Guyana _ A senior Caribbean Community official says the organization is moving forward with its effort to seek reparations from Britain for slavery. Assistant Secretary General Douglas Slater says Caricom sent a formal letter of complaint to British Prime Minister David Cameron outlining its case for reparations. The Caribbean Community intends to take the matter to the world court if Britain does not respond within two years. Slater said Tuesday that legal action is a last resort and that the organization prefers a settlement. The letter sent by Barbados Prime Minister Freundel Stuart has not been released. Caribbean leaders launched a renewed push for reparations in 2013. They argued that poverty and disease haunt former colonies because of slavery. Cameron rejected the call for reparations during a visit to Jamaica last year

Wyatt said a Klan member was stomped on by counter-protesters during another altercation. Three people have been detained.

ANAHEIM, Calif. _ Three people were stabbed at a Ku Klux Klan gathering Saturday in Southern California, police said. At least one person was in critical condition. An altercation between a group of KKK members and counter-protesters erupted at a Klan rally in Anaheim, with both sides involved in violent attacks, Sgt. Daron Wyatt with the Anaheim Police Department told The Associated Press. Three people, all initially believed to be counter-protesters, were stabbed. One person was in custody.

He said Deonarine had promised to return the money before fleeing. Guyana has been cracking down on corruption in recent months as it pursues charges against high-ranking officials from the previous administration. One official recently was charged with stealing $3 million and several government vehicles.

In January 2015, packets containing fliers condemning Martin Luther King, Jr. and supporting the Ku Klux Klan were left in the driveways of about 40 homes in Santa Ana, about 8 miles south of Anaheim. The baggies contained a KKK business card, rock and candy. The fliers opened with the heading, “On Martin Luther King Day, you are celebrating a communist pervert.'' The bottom of the fliers state they came from the “Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.''

The World Spike Lee endorses Sanders: ‘He will do the right thing’

Filmmaker Spike Lee is endorsing Bernie Sanders for president in a South Carolina radio ad. Arguing, in Sanders’ words, that the “system is rigged,’’ Lee praises Sanders for not taking money from corporations in the ad. And in a reference to one of his early films, Lee says that once in the White House, Sanders “will do the right thing.’’ Lee also notes that the Vermont senator participated in the march on Washington and protested segregation in Chicago public schools. A writer, director and actor, Lee’s films include “Do the Right Thing,’’ and “Malcom X.’’ His most recent movie “Chi-Raq’’ is about gun violence in Chicago. Lee endorsed President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. The Associated Press

Guyana seeks ex govt official accused of embezzlement

A police spokesman says Aeshwar Deonarine fled to Canada last year after he was accused of illegally raising his salary and stealing $150,000 from the power company where he worked as deputy chief executive. Spokesman Wendell Blanhum said Tuesday that police also have requested help from Interpol.

The KKK has a long history in Southern California, with Klansmen holding elected office in Anaheim in the 1920s. Nationwide, the number of active KKK groups increased to 190 in 2015 after falling in 2013 and 2014, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Haitian economist named PM under interim government

The Associated Press

GEORGETOWN, Guyana _ The South American country of Guyana has requested that authorities in Canada arrest a former government official accused of embezzling money from the state-owned power company.

March 1st - 15th 2016

“We have to identify the different values of this country and bring them together to create the energy needed to face our problems,'' he said. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti _ Economist Fritz Jean, the former governor of Haiti's central bank, has been named as the country's new prime minister in an interim government. Jean was chosen by Haiti's provisional President Jocelerme Privert recently from a field of six candidates. Jean is supposed to appear before Haiti's Senate and Chamber of Deputies in upcoming days. He told a local radio station on Friday that a big debate among Haitians is the only way to save the country and they

Outgoing Prime Minister Evans Paul denounced Jean's appointment during a brief news conference on Friday and warned Haiti's interim government was headed into chaos. Paul said he would not attend Jean's induction ceremony Friday afternoon at the National Palace. The interim government is expected to last 120 days as it prepares to hold a postponed runoff election on April 24. A newly elected president is to be installed on May 14.

JOHANNESBURG _ South Africa’s ruling party has defeated a no-confidence vote against President Jacob Zuma, who also faced a court challenge from an opposition party that wants corruption charges to be reinstated against him. The parliamentary motion against Zuma on Tuesday followed increasing criticism of the president on a range of issues, including a scandal over millions of dollars in state spending on his private home. The ruling African National Congress, which has a majority in parliament, defeated the motion brought by the Democratic Alliance, the biggest opposition party. Separately, an opposition lawyer argued in a Pretoria court that prosecutors were wrong to drop fraud and other charges against Zuma in 2009. Zuma says the decision to drop the charges was sound and efforts to revive the case are politically motivated.

Opposition wins control in Jamaica, ousts prime minister a poor economy, turnout was around 47 per cent. The leader of the Jamaica Labor Party, Andrew Holness, was greeted by cheering supporters as he arrived at party headquarters in the capital following the announcement of the results in a hard-fought fight with the People's National Party of Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller. KINGSTON, Jamaica _ The opposition narrowly won Jamaica's parliamentary elections Thursday, defeating the party led by the first female prime minister to govern the largest English-speaking country in the Caribbean. Preliminary results from the Electoral Commission showed the Jamaica Labor Party capturing 33 spots in the 63-seat Parliament, enough to form a government. With discontent high among Jamaicans over high crime and

Holness, ready to form a government as the new prime minister, pledged to create jobs and grow the economy while improving education and health care. “We don't take it that we have won a prize,'' he told the crowd. “The cost of victory is to keep the commitments we have made.'' Simpson Miller became the country's first female leader in 2006. That first term ended in 2007, but she returned as

prime minister in 2011 amid a shrinking economy and one of the highest levels of debt relative to GDP in the world. Her government negotiated a $930 million aid package with the IMF. The Jamaican dollar has declined, the cost of living has gone up and wages have been stagnant. The IMF, however, has praised the government for cutting debt and making other reforms to its economy and the country's stock market was rated among the best performing in the world last year. “It makes no sense we stop the progress now,'' said voter Herbert Hall. “We've made a lot of progress with the economy and development. It would be chaos if we change now.'' But Holness' campaign pledge to make the economy more dynamic with cuts to the income tax

and other measures resonates with many in a country with widespread poverty and a youth unemployment rate above 30 per cent. “I'm voting for change,'' Velma Johnson said as she waited to cast her ballot. “Wages are frozen and there's a lot of arrogance about this government.'' Many Jamaicans are also fed up with one of the highest homicide rates in the world, mostly blamed on gangs. The country had at least 1,192 slayings in 2015, a roughly 20 per cent increase from the previous year. By comparison, Chicago, which has roughly the same population as Jamaica at 2.7 million, had 468 killings in the same period. Rihanna video featuring Drake puts spotlight on Toronto's Real Jerk restaurant they would feature the restaurant's trademark sign, with its backsplash of Pan-African colours and a smiling sun.

TORONTO _ A Toronto restaurant is getting international attention after being prominently featured in one of Rihanna's two new music videos for “Work'' with Drake _ a film shoot the co-owner admits he was initially reluctant to agree to. Edward Pottinger, who co-owns the Caribbean eatery the Real Jerk with wife Lilly, says the video's creators called him about two weeks ago on a Monday asking if they could shoot there for about 24 hours on the Friday of that same week. Friday is one of the busiest days for

the Real Jerk and Pottinger, who was in his native Jamaica at the time, wanted to make sure his customers came first. “They had to convince me to do it, because I don't really give up a regular restaurant night to shoot movies or video clips,'' says Pottinger. ‘I value my customers, who come from all over.... They come from far away, so when they come and see a closed restaurant, it's not really nice for them.'' But the ‘Work'' team assured him

says Pottinger.

“I realized how powerful it would be to have the name associated with us,''

The song's pulsating beats slowly kick in as they strut into the Real Jerk, where Rihanna and Drake join a smoky dancehall party. The video features shots of food from the restaurant and Lilly makes an appearance flipping jerk chicken and dancing in the kitchen. “I was really blown away by it,'' says Pottinger, who thought the Real Jerk sign would just be seen for a brief moment at the end of the video. “Drake always builds up Toronto and supports Toronto and this is a fine example.''

‘Realizing it was the No. 1 male and female rapper/pop stars in the world, it was, 'OK, let's do this thing.'''

Pottinger says Toronto-bred Drake and the video's homegrown creator, Director X (who also produced Drake's ‘Hotline Bling''), had eaten at the restaurant before.

The video, which came out Monday along with a much racier altenate version, surpassed Pottinger's expectations.

Ironically, while the Real Jerk's food is seen in the video, it didn't actually cater the video shoot _ much to the disappointment of Drake.

The Real Jerk sign is featured in the very first frame of the video as Rihanna, clad in a pink fur coat, gets out of a slick car along with Drake.

‘When he came he was actually a little disappointed that we didn't have food for him,'' says Pottinger. “But we did accommodate and we

made some roti.'' Fans gathered outside, posting photos and video to social media, as the shoot went all night and into the wee hours of the morning. “They work really hard,'' says Pottinger. “All the dancers, all the production crew, Drake, Rihanna, they were there for 24 hours, from beginning until end.'' The Real Jerk, which first opened over 30 years ago, is known for its jerk dishes, its rotis and stocks 60 to 70 varieties of rum. Pottinger says they've received many emails, phone calls and interview requests since the video came out. They've had movies and documentaries shot in the restaurant before “but nothing of this magnitude,'' he says. “We don't just sell food, we sell culture, and I'm very happy to share our culture of the Caribbean.'' MR. VEGAS DEFENDS JAMAICAN NATIONAL TREASURES WITH NEW SINGLE. weeks ago. It was about the sale of some of the historical places that are being sold or what is already sold by the government.” Mr Vegas explained Mr Vegas says releasing this single now isn’t premeditated; the motivation developed as the issue came to his attention. The single ‘Gi Wi Back Wi Sweet Jamaica’ would have been done last year or even five years ago if he was made aware of the sale of Jamaican treasures at that time. At the height of the Jamaican General Election where the two major political parties are going back and forth about assets owned by members of parliament, international dancehall star Mr. Vegas has raised concerns about the assets owned by Jamaica. The single ‘Gi Wi Back Wi Sweet Jamaica’ produced by Mr. Vegas’ MV Music label is a mixture of Jamaican original Mento with current dancehall beats. It details aspects of actual Jamaican natural assets being sold to overseas interests. Dunns River, Goat Island and Dolphin cove are just a few examples. “I came across an article a few

“It is a shame! Why are our national treasures, that our fore parents’ blood sweat and tears drenched to maintain, being sold? I don’t see the sense of selling all these treasures and Jamaicans are still suffering and the country still has such a huge debt. It is like me selling my house and then renting it back from the Chinese.” Mr Vegas added He also wanted to make it clear this single isn’t politically motivated. “ I hear people saying I am talking like a JLP. I am neither! I am a Jamaican who is worried about my kids and your kids’ future. None of the political parties are better than the other, they are all the same. We are the ones who will have to

ask back for our country, don’t put yourself back into slavery” Mr Vegas admonished The song ‘‘Gi Wi Back Wi Sweet Jamaica’ is not just for Mr. Vegas’ fans, it is for all Jamaicans so they realize what is really going on, that the government is selling our children’s future. The Single and corresponding music video will be officially released in a matter of days, the single is being distributed digitally by distribution giant Zojak Worldwide.

Perspective Vision must be commended for publishing this entertainment story of this new Single by Mr. Vegas “Gi Wi Back Wi Sweet Jamaica.”

they are borrowing from Paul to pay Peter. Peter Phillips and the PNP are boasting about passing IMF tests. Audley Shaw, JLP MP and Opposition Spokesman on Finance and former Finance Minister repeatedly states that “The PNP has failed to pass the peoples’ test.” When we sell off our national treasures we become a rudderless society with little or no record of our heritage. Development is important, but as Garvey reminds us “A people without a knowledge of their history is a people without a heritage” Do not sell off our national treasures.

The Government of the day has been so broke that they will sell their birth certificate to balance the books and say they are trying to pay down the national debt. It is their mismanagement of the economy that is their downfall.

If Vegas’ commentary hits the nail on the head ... who cares if it falls in line with the JLP mission to save Jamaica from the wrecking crew. Peter Phillips and his fellow Comrades spend their time tearing down Andrew Holness’ house and his 10 point plan for Jamaica’s recovery. Their only plan is character assassination of the JLP Leader and by extension its leadership.

When the JLP left office in 2012 after the 2011 election the PNP got large reserves to play with and they squandered these resources ... now

The masses are not dissuaded from looking at this new 10 point plan ... as Holness said at the mass rally of 125, 000 ... Sunday night in

Half-Way-Tree ... “Man has no plan, bad mouth man with plan ... woman do not understand plan” Back Into Slavery Mr. Vagas must be commended for his new song entitled “Gi Wi Back Wi Sweet Jamaica”. To quote Mr. Vegas ..... “I hear people saying I am talking like a JLP. I am neither! I am a Jamaican worried about my kids and your kids’ future. ... We are the ones who will have to ask back for our country, don’t put yourself back into slavery” Mr. Vegas admonished. We look forward to the video’s release. Thank you Mr. Vegas for your defense of “Jamaican National Treasures With New Single” your patriotism is commendable. Personally as an artiste myself I do share your concern Mr. Vegas ... as we are defenders of the future. KANYE VS EZRIN TORONTO (CP) _ A veteran Canadian music producer is the latest target of Kanye West's online wrath. He asked, “Has anybody ever heard of Bob Ezrin???'' and directed the producer to “never speak in public again.''

Another Torontonian, the Weeknd, co-wrote the song “F-M-L.'' West's new album, “The Life of Pablo,'' was released over the weekend on Jay-Z's streaming service.

Judge wants more legal filing on Cosby defamation case

Website spoofing rapper Kanye West’s financial woes helps Edmonton charity

Weintraub delayed a ruling until March 29 and ordered attorneys to file new briefs on whether the denial by Cosby's former lawyer constituted a legal communication about possible litigation.

By Anthony McCartney THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES _ A judge on Monday delayed ruling on Bill Cosby's motion to dismiss a defamation case filed by model Janice Dickinson over her allegations that the comedian drugged and raped her in 1982. Dickinson sued Cosby in May over his denial of her claims. She says his former attorney wrote letters to news outlets denying her allegations and implying the organizations could be sued if they used the claims in stories. Dickinson also says she tried to include the account in a 2002 memoir, but her publisher refused. On Monday, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Debre Katz

The letter was sent to Entertainment Tonight, Buzzfeed and other news organizations. Cosby's attorneys assert that Dickinson has told differing accounts of her interactions with the comedian over the years and she cannot prove that their statements branding her a liar are false. They also have raised the possibility that the denial from Cosby's attorney is legally protected and cannot be used in a defamation case. The lawsuit by Dickinson says Cosby's denial of her allegations caused her to feel re-victimized. ___ Anthony McCartney can be reached at http://twitter.com/mccartneyAP

Lorentz says $700 would feed the children at the school One Child’s Village operates for a month. The charity and its school helps children affected by HIV and AIDS.

EDMONTON _ An Edmonton charity that helps children in Nairobi has become the unintentional beneficiary of celebrity vanity. Todd Lorentz, a director of One Child’s Village, says donations are starting to come in as a result of a Florida man’s campaign called “Help Kenya, Not Kanye.’’ Gabriel Ferrer launched the website out of disgust for rapper Kanye West’s pleas for financial help on Twitter, including asking Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to give him $1 billion ``in order to bring more beautiful ideas to the world.’’ Ferrer’s website suggests that fans who might spend $700 on one of West’s sweaters _ an item in his high-priced line of clothing _ donate the money to charities operating in the African country instead.

Lorentz says he was completely surprised that his small organization, which operates out of his Edmonton home, ended up being listed on the website, but says he’s happy to go along with it. “We would love our name to be out more, so people see us, but we also don’t have money allocated for marketing,’’ he explains. He hopes they benefit from the attention, even if the campaign turns out to be short-lived. “We’re just hoping that we can get as much voice as we can in the short time that it might be up there, and hopefully we can launch a lot of new projects and help tens of thousands more kids in the coming weeks and months.’’ (CHED, CTV Edmonton)

Steph Curry is on a roll, and fans everywhere seem to enjoy record he set last year sometime next week. The Warriors are 52-5, still on pace for the best record in NBA history and could actually clinch a playoff spot when they visit Oklahoma City on Saturday _ with more than six weeks left in the season. “What the guy has been able to do is different than we've seen,'' Miami guard Dwyane Wade said. “It's rare to see a guy who dominates a game that far out on the perimeter. Jordan dominated the game from 15 feet and in, Kobe (Bryant) as well. Shaquille (O'Neal) dominated from about 7 and in. You've see a lot of guys dominate in different ways. We haven't seen a guy dominate the way he's dominated from about 38, 40 and in.

A 40-footer buzzer-beater in Miami one night. A 45-footer to beat the clock in Orlando the very next night. In both cases, the thousands of fans who came to watch the brightest star in today's NBA do something special expressed their satisfaction with long, lusty cheers. And remember, those were road crowds. It is Stephen Curry's game right now, and whether the Golden State Warriors are home or away it seems no one needs a reminder to enjoy what the league's premier sharpshooter is doing on a nightly basis. The most entertaining player on the NBA's most entertaining team has fans coming early and staying late to catch a glimpse, take a selfie, get an autograph, whatever they can muster in order to feel like they were part of the show.

“I was fortunate to play with Michael Jordan and just about every night I was awestruck,'' Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Thursday in Orlando, after Curry's shot from midcourt was the highlight of a 51-point night. “I would say that Steph is on that level now. You see it night after night. It's awesome, but it becomes routine because he does it so often.'' Curry was the NBA's MVP last season after averaging 23.8 points on 49 per cent shooting, with a league-record 286 makes from 3-point range. He's somehow better now. He's averaging 30.4 points on 51 per cent shooting. He's extended his streak of games with at least one 3-pointer to 128 and counting, a new NBA record. Reaching 400 3-pointers isn't totally out of the question; he should eclipse the

“If you're a basketball fan, you're a Steph Curry fan,'' Wade said. “There's no reason to dislike anything about Steph Curry.'' Even opponents can't help but marvel at his long-range antics. “Ridiculous,'' Orlando's Aaron Gordon said. “He's been doing that all year long.'' Curry's pregame shooting and dribbling shows have become the stuff of legend. There were more than 150 people around the court just before 6 p.m. Wednesday _ most of them with phones in hand, poised to snap photos or take some video _ when Curry took the floor to warm up in Miami. When he left, some fans were waiting for his autograph and a teenage boy held out a ball for Curry to sign. “Make it out to me,'' the boy said, handing Curry a Sharpie pen. Curry started signing his name, and the boy said again, “make it

out to ...'' before stopping. Curry looked at him with a raised eyebrow. “I'm sorry,'' the boy said. “I forgot my name for a second.'' The nervous youngster got his autograph, as have plenty of others. For his part, Curry enjoys the circus that follows the Warriors around. “We have a lot of support,'' Curry said. “Every arena we set foot in, it's a pretty electric atmosphere. That's what you live for, really. To have that every single night, to get going in that kind of competitive environment with fan support, it's pretty fun.'' The Warriors have seen sellouts all season, Curry's jersey is the hottest seller in the league _ look around a crowd at just about any NBA game, it's out there _ and Golden State merchandise is flying off the shelves as well. And while there's no shortage of star power on the reigning champions' roster, Curry is the unquestioned leader. “When you have the juice, enjoy it,'' Wade said. “There's going to be somebody coming up behind him. We don't know who that person will be. Right now, he has it and he's doing an amazing job with it.'' TV's 'black ish' takes child's eye view of police violence world they're living in and they can't avoid anymore'' because of the Internet, their friends and myriad other sources, he said. “How do you talk to your kids about hard things and not make scorched-earth whatever their experiences are going to be based on your experiences'' and perspective, Barris said.

LOS ANGELES _ As tense crowds await a grand jury's decision in a case of possible police brutality, a child watching TV news coverage asks his parents a simple but loaded question.

would take on the even-thornier subject of police treatment of blacks through a fictional case in Los Angeles in which a black man was hit repeatedly with a Taser by officers.

The question young Jack (Miles Brown) poses in the opening scene echoes one that Barris got from his own son, then 7, as they watched coverage of the Ferguson, Missouri, protests sparked by the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown, 18.

“Why are these people so mad?'' the African-American boy queries in Wednesday's episode of “black-ish,'' prompting the TV family's debate over how much to tell children about how harsh the world may or may not be.

But Kenya Barris, the show's creator and executive producer, said his goal was to prompt viewer conversations about how parents respond to the deluge of worrying information children face in these hyper-connected times.

That said, Rainbow and Andre “Dre'' Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross, Anthony Anderson) and others in the family are blunt in their opinions about police treatment of blacks. The result is funny, provocative and unsettling.

The ABC comedy began its second season with a deft look at the increasingly casual use of the N-word, so it's unsurprising it

The episode, which airs at 9:30 p.m. EST, “had less to do with police brutality and more to do with talking to your kids about the

“The police are damn thugs,'' says Dre's father, Pops (Laurence Fishburne).

“Not all police,'' says Rainbow. “Yeah, only 92 per cent. The other 8 per cent are advisers on 'Law & Order' episodes,'' snaps back Dre. The point is that that all individuals, black or otherwise, have their own perspective, Barris said, and that was key to “black-ish'' from the start. It's common for minority characters to be presented with a “monolithic vocal tone,'' he said. “We built the series to show we are really multilayered as people, not just black people but in general as a community of Americans.''

“I'm very interested and nervous as to the reaction. It's different from anything I've written before,'' said Barris. It's also different from what TV tends to be, which is carefully detached from controversy to avoid upsetting sponsors or viewers. Barris credits ABC, which last week named Channing Dungey, the first African-American to head a broadcast network. “This experiment called 'black-ish' has been an amazing journey, and it's been supported by the network in a way that I don't know that a lot of other networks would have,'' Barris said. By Lynn Elber

The series, of course, also was designed to draw laughs. Barris recognizes that this week's episode may summon memories of those “very special'' sitcom half-hours that ventured into deep waters, such as 1977's “All in the Family'' episode about the attempted rape of gentle housewife Edith Bunker.

'Empire' to stop airing on Canadian network City, will stream on Shomi opportunity to shift the series,'' said Marni Shulman, head of Shomi's content and programming, in an interview. Though Shomi refuses to disclose viewership numbers, Shulman said the first season of the series “always'' ranks among the streaming service's 10 mostwatched shows. “Empire' is a really, really strong show for Shomi,'' she said. “It performs exceptionally well for us.'' TORONTO _ Fans of the hip-hop soap opera “Empire'' will soon have to look elsewhere to watch it in Canada as the TV series is being dropped from its prime-time TV slot and is moving to Shomi. The streaming video service says it has acquired the exclusive Canadian rights for the final half of the show's second season, which begins airing March 30 on Fox. The deal was made after “Empire'' was dropped by Canadian television network City, which carried the show last fall. Shomi says each episode will be available within 24 hours after its original U.S. airing. Canadians will

still be able to catch the series on Wednesday nights through the Fox network feed offered by their cable or satellite provider or via an over-the-air antenna. It's the latest _ and most high-profile _ migration of a buzzy U.S. network TV show to a Canadian streaming service. Last summer, “Fresh Off the Boat'' took up residence on Shomi when it failed to find broadcaster support in Canada, and “Scandal'' recently landed on Netflix Canada when it was bumped from City's TV schedule. “You take the opportunities when they come, and this was a great

Traditional TV viewers didn't warm to the series in quite the same way, despite massive hype and U.S. ratings that were through the roof, said Hayden Mindell, vice president of TV programming and content at City's owner Rogers Media. “It wasn't getting the audiences we needed on City,'' he said. While “Empire'' routinely placed within the Top 10 for U.S. network Fox, the Canadian airing never broke the Top 30, according to data compiled by Numeris. Around the same time as “Empire'' was struggling on City, quite the opposite was happening on Shomi when it debuted last year,

Latino cast.

The streaming service found that season 1 of “Empire'' connected with its viewers almost immediately. About 77 per cent of the Shomi accounts that made it through the second episode watched all the way to the end of the first season.

“Regardless of how multicultural Canada is ... a lot of the time that doesn't tend to resonate across conventional television,'' she said.

“That's really, really high,'' Shulman said. She added that “Empire'' doesn't attract only the younger viewers often associated with streaming services. She said Shomi's demographics for “Empire'' stretch beyond the coveted 18-to-49 demographic.

“Typically speaking, the more multicultural shows don't perform as well on linear television as they do on (streaming services).'' There are exceptions to that rule, Shulman added, pointing to “Blackish'' as one example. Canadian viewers have also made hits out of “Quantico,'' led by Indian film superstar Priyanka Chopra, and Shonda Rhimes's “How to Get Away With Murder.''

Along with Shomi, streaming competitors are in pursuit of shows that aren't wanted by the major broadcasters, Shulman said. It's hard to ignore that many of the series rejected by Canada's biggest TV channels are also led by minority casts.

“The stars have to align to make sure that you are getting the right show for your brand at the right time, for the right fee,'' Shulman said.

Among the shows Shomi owns the exclusive rights to is “Jane the Virgin,'' a Golden Globe-winning comedy based on a Venezuelan telenovela, and Netflix streams “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series,'' a thriller with a mostly

ISHAWNA TAKES HOME FASHION ICON and YOUNG HOT AND HYPE YOUTH VIEW AWARD Ishawna turned heads on the red carpet with the semi transparent piece. She was however quite surprised by her win.

Diary Of A Badman, the low-budget drama that won Best Feature Film at last year’s Jamaica Film Festival, will be officially launched on March 30 at Carib Cinema in Jamaica. It will also premiere at theatres in the Cayman Islands on that date. This is the first time a film from the Jamaica Promotions Corporation-produced Jamaica Film Festival will be shown. In an interview with the Jamaica Observer producer and lead actress Jacinth Sutphin, who plays detective Simone Williams said. “I’m so grateful to be the leading actress and producer in an independent film lined up with huge Hollywood blockbuster films for theatrical release and with no Hollywood faces, and no investors,” she said. The 130-minute Diary Of A Badman was shot in sections of New York and New Jersey. The plot surrounds Williams, a Jamaican immigrant to the United States, who is working undercover on a high-profile case. Her target is notorious drug dealer Winston ‘Bucky’ Bailey.

ber cast, with Douglas A Robbs as Bucky and Michael Thor Love as Sergeant Putkowski, as well as other leading players. It was directed by London-born Diemiruaya Deniran. In a previous interview with the Jamaica Observer, the director described the film as a “Cleopatra Jones meets Donnie Brasco”. “What makes the film so unique is that it gives the outlook on the entire undercover cop movie in a revitalising way by flipping the script from the cliché male cop role by having a female play the role. Women of African descent usually don’t acquire these opportunities; with Diary Of A Badman it changes that status quo,” he said. Sutphin, 28, spent her early years with her grandmother in St Mary, but at age 13 migrated to Brooklyn, New York to live with her mother. While a student at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, she appeared in a number of theatre productions. Her latest film is “The Closest 1 To You” slated to be released on April 16.

I work with mood and vibes that I’m feeling, that tells me what I’m rocking today. I do things my way regardless of what others think. I’m not afraid to take risks with my fashion or my music” Ishawna explained The risks ultimately paid off as her fans voted her the Fashion Icon Female and Young Hot and Hype Female for 2015. Dressed in a regal black jeweled piece at the actual ceremony on Saturday,

“I was a little startled. I didn’t expect to win. But it does feel good. I’d like to say thanks to my fans for their support I really couldn’t have done it without them. I just want to celebrate this win with my fans.” Ishawna added Ishawna will be capitalizing on the title ‘Young Hot and Hype’ with her musical releases this year as well. The artiste will be dropping additional hot tracks like the recently released ‘Social Media Hot’ single that is doing quite well since its release over a week ago. The artiste is also expected to take some fashion icon style to her performance at the BritJam Festival on March 11 in Montego Bay, before heading out for her European Tour in May.
