The Caribbean Jamaica: Air quality tests done amid massive fire at dump show high levels of benzene

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Jamaican health officials says air quality tests done in the wake of a massive dump fire show such high levels of a known carcinogen that they now consider it a significant public health issue. The health ministry says air tests taken March 13-14 show the highest levels of benzene the government agency has ever recorded. In a Monday statement, acting Chief Medical Officer Dr. Marion Bullock DuCasse described it is a “significant public health’’ matter. But at the same time, the ministry notes that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say long-term benzene exposure means exposure of a year or more. A week ago, DuCasse said she did not believe there would be any long-term effects from the dump fire that blanketed Kingston with noxious smoke. The Associated Press

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad _ Police in Trinidad and Tobago who are in a salary dispute with the government have blocked major roadways, paralyzing traffic in the Caribbean nation. Prime Minister Freundel Stuart says he plans on making the switch to a republic by November 2016 when the former British colony celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence. Stuart says “it’s a little awkward’’ to keep pledging allegiance to the queen as titular monarch of an otherwise independent country. He says that despite the change, Barbados would remain in the Commonwealth grouping of former British territories. A Buckingham Palace spokesman said Monday that “it is a matter for the government and people of Barbados.’’ Barbados will need a two-thirds majority in Parliament to authorize the constitutional change. Jesse Jackson Jr. leaves federal prison in Alabama for halfway house in DC

CHICAGO _ Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. was released from an Alabama federal prison early Thursday, two years after pleading guilty to spending $750,000 in campaign money on personal items, his father said. The Rev. Jesse Jackson described his son's release from the minimum security federal prison camp at Maxwell Air Force

Base in Montgomery, Alabama, as a “joyous reunion'' and said the younger Jackson was doing “very well.''

confidence against the administration of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. But a ruling party lawmaker dismissed Rowley's motion during an election year as a waste of time, prompting the opposition walkout. Some members shouted “cowards'' at governing legislators as they left Parliament.

Keith Rowley is the leader of the twin-island country's main opposition faction. On Wednesday, he brought a motion of no

money on televisions, restaurant dinners and other costly personal items, including $43,350 on a gold-plated men's Rolex watch and $9,587.64 on children's furniture.

Jackson served in Congress from 1995 until he resigned in November 2012. In June of 2012 he took medical leave for treatment of bipolar disorder and other issues.

During sentencing, the judge scolded Jackson for using campaign funds as a “piggy bank.''

Jackson's wife, Sandra Jackson, a former Chicago alderman, was sentenced to a year in prison for filing false joint federal income tax returns that knowingly understated the income the couple received. She must serve her term after her husband completes his sentence. The couple has two children.

Jackson, a 50-year-old Illinois Democrat, began his sentence on Nov. 1, 2013. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons lists his release date as Sept. 20, 2015. Former U.S. According to court documents, Rep. Patrick Kennedy, who visited the Jacksons spent campaign Jackson on Monday, said Jackson

would serve out the remainder of his 2 1/2-year term in a Washington, D.C., halfway house. Jackson must also spend three years on supervised release and complete 500 hours of community service.

The ruling United National Congress asserted that the opposition walkout was a “serious affront to democracy.'' General elections are due by September in Trinidad and Tobago, the second biggest energy producer in the Caribbean after nearby Venezuela. The Associated Press

Jackson's resignation ended a once-promising political career that was tarnished by unproven allegations that he was involved in discussions to raise campaign funds for imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Q&A: John Legend on race, Common's backlash, Sam Smith collab, 'Blurred Lines' and SXSW and something we need to change. And it's fallen disproportionally on black and brown communities, especially black communities, and it's kind of a manifestation of structural racism. So when you think about that kind of thing, it's not enough to say we need to love each other, you have to go behind that and say we need to change these policies, we need to fight, we need to protest, we need to agitate for change. AP: What was it like working with Sam Smith on the charity single “Lay Me Down''?

AUSTIN, Texas _ John Legend says he's concerned that the “Blurred Lines'' verdict could set a scary precedent for artists creating music inspired by others. In a wide-ranging interview with The Associated Press, the Grammy winner said understands why people say 2013's biggest hit song by Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke sounds like “Got to Give It Up,'' Marvin Gaye's 1977 hit, adding: “I said that when I first heard it, too.'' But he said he doesn't agree with the jury that determined the performers copied elements of Gaye's work. “You have to be careful when it comes to copyrights, whether just sounding like or feeling like something is enough to say you violated their copyrights,'' the singer-songwriter told The Associated Press on Saturday before performing at the South by Southwest music festival. “Because there's a lot of music out there, and there's a lot of things that feel like other things that are influenced by other things. And you don't want to get into that thing where all of us are suing each other all the time because this and that song feels like another song.'' Williams, with whom Legend has worked in the past, and Thicke also were ordered to pay nearly $7.4 million to three of Gaye's children.

“I think we have to be careful about that, and I'm a little concerned that this verdict might be a slippery slope,'' Legend said. Legend also spoke about collaborating with Sam Smith, whose debut album earned him Grammys for song and record of the year last month; his collaborator Common's recent comments about racism that sparked some backlash; and mentoring budding artists with for the AXE White Label. Here are some highlights from the interview: ___ AP: Are you working on a new album? Legend: A week from Monday I'll start. I'm going on vacation next week because I need it (laughs) and then I'll really jump in the studio to start writing again. AP: “All of Me'' was such a huge hit. Is there any pressure as you head into the next album? Legend: The pressure I put on myself isn't, 'I have to make another 'All of Me. “It's just I have to write great songs. I want to make a better record than I made the last time. I want to grow.

I want to discover new things about myself creatively. AP: You and Common won an Oscar for “Glory'' from (the movie) “Selma.'' Where did you put it? Legend: It's sitting on my piano in New York at our apartment there. AP: Common received some backlash for his comments about ending racism on “The Daily Show'' last week. What are your thoughts? Legend: Oh yeah, I heard a little bit about it and I understand what he's saying because I do believe that part of us ending racism is us seeing each other's humanity and learning to love each other, even if we look different or worship differently or live differently. But I think it's not enough for us to extend the hand of love. I think it's important that that goes both ways. It's important also that we look at policies we need to change as well. It's important for us also to fight for certain changes that need to happen. And one of those issues that I really care about is education. But also another one is incarceration, which is what I talked about at the Oscars. And mass incarceration is a policy that's kind of built up over the last four decades and it's destroyed families and communities,

Legend: It was great. I love Sam. I think he's one of the most talented new artists out right now, and our voices work really well together. And we both love soul music and wanted to make a really powerful song together, and we were able to do that _ and do it for a great cause. And I'm excited for all the traction the song has gotten; it hit No. 1, my first No. 1 in the U.K. AP: Have you been to SXSW before? Legend: I've performed here many times, just different types of events. There's always something going on. The first time I played here was actually for Starbucks, outside of Starbucks in 2005 for my first album. I've come back for different purposes different years. I've done a show with Kanye here. AP: What was it like mentoring budding musicians? Legend: I love it. It's something I've always done anyway. A lot of it has been informal; some of it is me signing artists like Estelle or executive producing artists like Stacy Barthe. It's always been a part of what I like to do, and I benefited from it as well. Kanye signed me and has mentored me, Stevie Wonder has mentored me. All kinds of people have given me great advice over the years, so I like to pay it forward as well. By Mesfin Fekadu THE ASSOCIATED PRESS __ Online: http://www.johnlegend.com/us/ http://sxsw.com/

NEW YORK _ A former hiphop and rap promoter was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison plus 20 years for a murder-for-hire plot that a judge described as “heinous'' and “vile.'' The federal judge imposed the sentence on James “Jimmy the Henchman'' Rosemond, who was found guilty at a December trial in Man-

Rosemond was convicted for his role in ordering a crew of men to kill an associate of the rap group known as G-Unit. The charges stemmed from the 2009 shooting death of Lowell Fletcher. Prosecutors had said the killing was payback for an assault on Rosemond's son by Fletcher and other G-Unit associates. They said the son was not seriously injured in the assault and Fletcher served prison time for his involvement in it. Upon Fletcher's release from prison, though, he was killed. Rosemond, who has represented artists such as The Game and Sean Kingston, already was serving a life sentence for smuggling cocaine

in music equipment cases between studios in New York and Los Angeles. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said Rosemond bragged to an associate after the killing that he would never be caught because Fletcher was merely a “gangbanger'' who died in the Bronx. “This prosecution has proven Rosemond wrong,'' Bharara said in a news release. In announcing the sentence, U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon called Rosemond's conduct “heinous,'' ''vile” and ''disgusting.” Evidence at trial revealed Rosemond to be head of Czar Entertainment, a rap music

7

management company, and also the boss of a large-scale cocaine trafficking organization, prosecutors said. Rosemond's lawyer had argued the witnesses against him were unreliable. The Associated Press

While details on that currently untitled album are still scarce, he just posted the above image to his Instagram account. It’s not yet confirmed, but given the “Parental Advisory” tag and this tweet from TDE label boss Anthony Tiffith, it’s very possible that it’s the album’s artwork. Update: The title of the album is, indeed, To Pimp a Butterfly, Rolling Stone reports.

Reggae recording star, and 3 time JUNO Award winner Exco Levi has announced a date for the launch of his debut album, Country man; After his 15 years of recording experience including almost 100 singles which has earned him multiple awards in Canada, the US and Jamaica, Exco is ready to release the 19 track album produced by Donovan Germaine for Penthouse Records and Exco’s newly formed High Priest Records The deeply personal album which was written by Exco, bears songs that describe his challenges as a new immigrant to Canada, the mind set of children who are not on the right path, and Levi’s reliance on God for strength and support throughout the good and not so good times in his life.

Continuing with the “Seinfeld” theme from his mixtapes; rapper Wale’s next album will be called “The Album About Nothing” and is set for a March 31 release date. The 14-track album will include features from J. Cole, SZA, Usher and Jeremih, as well as production from Jake One, DJ Khalil and more.

Ludacris’ album Ludaversal has been forthcoming for quite some time. Usain Bolt returns to run in New York for 1st time since setting world record in 100 metres

Nash accepts retirement, but realizes his stint with the Lakers was a "failure" clouded my judgment and made me think, 'I can do this and I'm going to get there,' but in the end it became pretty clear. The decision was sort of made for me.'' Nash's back still bothers him every day, but he can live a relatively normal life with his girlfriend and his three children. He can even play soccer and swing a golf club _ something that infuriated a section of Lakers fans when they saw his activities on social media late last year.

NEW YORK _ Usain Bolt will run in New York for the first time since he set the world record in the 100 metres in 2008. Organizers say the six-time Olympic champion will run at the Diamond League meet at Icahn Stadium on June 13. That is where the Jamaican set his first world record in the 100, running 9.72 on May 31. A few months later, Bolt set another world record of 9.69 in the 100 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He lowered it yet again to 9.58 seconds at the 2009 world

championships in Berlin. Bolt says “no one could ever forget their first world record, and I will never forget the crowd in New York that night.'' Bolt also holds the world record in the 200 metres. EL SEGUNDO, Calif. _ Victoria's Steve Nash played through pain and injury for essentially his entire career. Until last fall, he really thought he could do it again for the Los Angeles Lakers. The two-time MVP point guard finally surrendered to his back woes last weekend after 19 years in the NBA. And though Nash now says his three-year stint with the Lakers was “a failure and also a huge disappointment,'' he'll settle into life after basketball in Los Angeles with warm feelings for the teammates and fans who supported him in his unsuccessful quest. “I came here with huge hopes and dreams, and was incredibly humbled and excited to come here and play for the Lakers,'' Nash said Tuesday at the team's training complex. “It's been a difficult period of my career and my life, to battle through that and to try to make something of it, which was fruitless in the end. I know I've never wanted something more, and I've never worked harder. It just wasn't to be.'' The 41-year-old Canadian icon confirmed the long-anticipated end of his 19-year NBA career three days earlier. He didn't play at all this season after emerging from his first pre-season game in excruciating pain, forcing him to confront his basketball mortality.

“I really thought I was going to get through this year,'' Nash said. “I think I had to feel that way. I did everything I possibly could.'' Nash raged against his balky back and the merciless calendar for every month of his tenure with the Lakers. With constant treatment and twice-daily workouts, he thought he could stave off the damage of a lifetime long enough to contend for an NBA title in the 2012-13 season alongside Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and fellow newcomer Dwight Howard. When that dream imploded after he broke his leg in his second game, Nash focused simply on getting healthy long enough to give the Lakers something for his three-year, $27 million contract, which also cost the club four draft picks. Instead, he played just 65 games in three seasons with the Lakers. He could only play 15 games last season, and his decision not to retire last summer cost the Lakers nearly $10 million in salary cap room. “It was just so much fighting every day with myself, with my body,'' Nash said. “Training twice a day and trying to get over the hump. Getting to some really good places and have it diminish so quickly. “There was a lot of stress and anxiety that came with that. In the end, I don't know if that

“I get it,'' Nash said. “Fans don't know the whole picture, so I get that they're passionate, especially online. There's a bit of a pack mentality, and I feel bad for our kids that they're going to grow up in that world, but I don't have a real problem with that. I'm not saying it's awesome.'' Although Nash is done playing, he said he would be glad to continue a mentoring role for Lakers rookie Jordan Clarkson and other players. He also is willing to help out the Lakers when they're recruiting free agents this summer. Nash isn't moving back to Canada or Phoenix in retirement. His kids are in school in Los Angeles, and he has grown to love Southern California living _ away from the court, at least. “I'm going to stay in L.A. with my kids and make this home forever, hopefully,'' Nash said. “I know there's been a lot of negativity online, but people in Los Angeles have been incredible to me. I've never had anyone say a negative thing to me in person, and in fact, the amount of support I've gotten for the effort and the constant fight to get back on the court has been incredibly touching.''
