Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, who has spearheaded the push for greater diversity in Silicon Valley, applauded Apple CEO Tim Cook for bringing Bell on to the board of the Cupertino, California, company. KINGSTON, Jamaica _ U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron is making his first official visit to Jamaica, which was a profitable British colony for about three centuries before the island became independent just over 50 years ago. Cameron has promised a roughly $300 million aid package to upgrade infrastructure across the Caribbean and reinvigorate Britain’s relationship with the region. He arrived Tuesday and departs Wednesday. But he is facing pressure to address a push by Caribbean governments for reparations from Britain and two other European nations for what they say is the lingering legacy of the Atlantic slave trade. After talks with Jamaica’s prime minister, Cameron said the United Kingdom’s longstanding position is “that we do not believe reparations is the right approach.’’ He is due to address Jamaica’s Parliament. Commission finds Guyana’s sugar corporation bankrupt; future uncertain

CUPERTINO, Calif. _ Apple has filled a void on its board of directors with James Bell, the former chief financial officer for aircraft maker Boeing Co. Bell becomes the only African American on Apple's board, helping the iPhone and iPad maker diversify its corporate hierarchy at a time when major technology companies are under fire for not having enough women and minorities in leadership roles and in their overall workforce. Apple Inc. already has two women on what is now an eight-director board. Two of Apple's top executives, Lisa

“We are delighted but not surprised,'' Jackson said. “Tim Cook has made a wise choice. James Bell is eminently qualified.'' Besides serving as Boeing's CFO during his 38-year career at the company, Bell also was interim CEO in 2005. He fills a vacancy created on Apple's board when J. Crew Group CEO Millard “Mickey'' Drexler relinquished his spot earlier this year. Bell also sits on the boards of JP Morgan Chase, Dow Chemical and another technology company, CDW.

The government in June fired the company’s director and forced board members to resign after officials said the company had run out of money to pay workers’ salaries. GEORGETOWN, Guyana _ Officials say Guyana’s state-owned sugar corporation faces an uncertain future after a report found that the South American country’s single largest employer is bankrupt.

The commission is expected to release a final report later this month to determine what the government should do about the Guyana Sugar Corporation. The company has struggled with an increase in production costs amid falling international sugar prices.

She told about 1,000 schoolgirls and young women at an event in New York on Tuesday to “compete with the boys’’ and do better than them. The Glamour magazine-sponsored discussion publicized her “Let Girls Learn’’ campaign to expand girls’ access to education in developing countries and encourage American girls to take advantage of their opportunities. Let Girls Learn involves hundreds of grassroots projects aimed at countering economic or cultural pressures that spur many girls to drop out of schools in the developing world. The U.S. Agency for International Development has said 62 million girls worldwide are not in school.

Trump seems to be the talk of the world, and it's often not flattering bemusement, astonishment and alarm. It's striking how many people know of him at all.

BALMEDIE, Scotland _ Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is well-known in this serene coastal section of Scotland, where shimmering golden sand dunes meet the ice-blue North Sea and people play on his golf course. He's known in the Himalayas, too, far from any sign with his name on it. And in the Middle East, Africa and beyond. His is clearly a recognized name worldwide, which is not to say it's a beloved one. In Balmedie, the real estate mogul is both praised and blamed for building a deluxe international golf course in a previously pristine spot. Some believe he's delivered the jobs and benefits he promised; others think American voters should beware a fast-talking scoundrel. “He is a strange fish,'' said Susan Munro, a shop worker who has lived on land adjacent to the new Trump resort for more than 35 years. “If he doesn't get his own way, he just loses it.'' As she sees it, ``He would be a disaster for everyone.'' In diverse parts of the world, many see the ascendant Trump candidacy with a mixture of

In the Himalayan hill town of Dharamsala, Tibetan Buddhist monk Tenzin Damchoe, 39, said Trump is “making a lot of noise to be noticed.'' Trump “must remember that the U.S. does not belong to white people, they themselves were once immigrants,'' he said. In the northern India city of Lucknow, Sharmila Krishna, 40, praised Trump for bringing life and colour to an otherwise dim campaign. “Political experience is not mandatory to run a country,'' she said. “Barack Obama has not done anything great.'' Many opinion-leaders and ordinary people are, though, concerned about a political novice as U.S. president. It is the bluster and the “make America great again'' talk that has shaped this view. Also, his swagger from “The Apprentice'' TV show, the easy-to-caricature hairstyle and his inflammatory comments, spread worldwide, about immigrants. Meantime he's done little to reach out to the rest of the world. In South Africa, for example, Trump angered

many with a series of harsh tweets, including one during Nelson Mandela's 2013 funeral service in which he called the country “a crime ridden mess that is just waiting to explode.'' J. Brooks Spector, a retired U.S. diplomat who writes a column on American politics for The Daily Maverick, a South African news and opinion site, said Trump confirms the stereotypical view of Americans as loud, boisterous and arrogant. Pearl Pillay, a policy researcher who spent time in the United States as part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, said U.S. diplomacy would “crash and burn'' if he takes power. Trump's self-presentation as a political renegade is, however, getting a sympathetic hearing from some people. And he seems to have support among Russia's emerging financial elite, many of whom are billionaires themselves.

believes his money can get him the presidency. God help America.'' It is Mexico that has borne the brunt of Trump's rhetoric. He has characterized Mexican immigrants crossing into the U.S. illegally as “rapists'' and “criminals,'' and pledged to build a “beautiful'' wall on the Mexican border to keep them out. Some Mexicans have reacted with anger, others shrug him off. “Don't take him so seriously, for God's sake, we're Mexicans, we make fun of death,'' said Jorge Suarez, whose company has released a new video game in which players can throw soccer balls, cactus leaves and tequila bottles at a cartoon image of Trump. Mexico's ambassador to the United States, Miguel Basanez, told Mexicans that Trump is simply playing politics during the primary campaign.

Russian tycoon Aras Agalarov told the Russian press he was impressed with Trump when he met him in Moscow two years ago during the Miss Universe beauty pageant. “He said a lot of good things about our country, our culture, our people,'' Agalarov said.

“He knows very well that what he is saying is false,'' the ambassador said. “He knows very well he will apologize to Mexicans.''

In India, many younger people in the high-tech centre of Bangalore take a dim view of Trump's candidacy, in part because he is perceived by some as racist.

“Any attempt to 'Make America Great' will require somebody with an agenda that will include people of all ethnicities and religious backgrounds,'' said Shreya Shetty, a 29-year-old engineer.

Singer-poet-pianist Benjamin Clementine dubbed “the future sound of London” debut’s his album in Toronto and art scene. Since then he's shared stages with Cat Power and Tune-Yards, released two EPS, and sold-out headline shows at Lia Cigale in Paris, Paradiso in Amsterdam and London's Purcell Rooms (five stars in the Standard), Koko and Emmanuel Centre. Toronto, ON (October 1, 2015) - Benjamin Clementine is a British-French singer-poet, pianist, composer and musician from London, England. Dubbed as the future sound of London, praised by everyone from David Byrne and Bjork, to Sir Paul Mccartney and Charles Aznavour, his vocals have been compared to Nina Simone and Antony Hegarty. He has been the only unsigned artist ever to make his TV debut on Later with Jools Holland, becoming the most shared artist on Spotify following his performance. Benjamin grew up in North London before moving to France for a period of time. During his spell whilst singing in Paris he broke free from the traditional song structure, inventing his own dramatic and innovative musical territory and consequently became a cult figure in the music

Most critics have honored him citing and describing him as a man of extreme intelligence, great pianistic style and deep musicality with charisma on stage but nonetheless, found it difficult to place his music in one specific genre, mostly stating that its rather beyond category. However, his vocal range, ability and diction has mostly been compared to that of Nina Simone, Antony Hegarty and his passionate vocal delivery to Edith Piaf. Britain's London Evening Standard named him one of London's most influential people of 2015 in their The Power 1000. He is noticeably seen playing on stage entirely in black or dark grey long trench-like woollen coat with no shirt underneath, in bare feet. Benjamin's debut album At Least For Now was released in France and other European territories early 2015, and in the UK in late March. Advertisment

Music Review: Janet Jackson is grand on comeback album, sings about Michael Jackson on 1 song And that's exactly it: Jackson's album, “Unbreakable,'' is a reminder that dance music is more than fast, loud electronic beats pounding to the floor. EDM creators and its admirers, take note. This 17-track set, which has Jackson reuniting with longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, is full of soulful, electro and addictive tracks that will make your head bop or vogue, or think. On the downbeat and introspective “Black Eagle,'' Jackson gets political, singing about those who are overlooked and judged. Janet Jackson, “Unbreakable'' (BMG/ Rhythm Nation Records) “It was in summer that you left me, the fall and winter never felt so cold, and Lord knows words can never express it, life feels so empty I miss you much,'' Janet Jackson sings about her late brother, Michael Jackson. “Painful tears like never before, we can't laugh together till we cry, but our love ain't no material thing, Insha'Allah, see you in the next life,'' she

continues in her signature soft tone. “Broken Hearts Heal'' is a perfect example of Jackson's musical prowess: The song's beat is so feel-good, breezy and bouncy that you must dance, but her lyrics are touching, and in this particular, heart-wrenching as she highlights her relationship, even as kids doing chores, with the King of Pop. You might cry.

“I'm singing this love song to show my support, to the beautiful people who have been ignored, with blind eyes and cold showers attacking them, invisible people they won't let fit in,'' she sings. “Because every life matters _ we all need to do better.'' Jackson isn't always serious, and ``Unbreakable'' is a balanced adventure: “Dammn Baby,'' which samples a line from her late '90s hit “I Get Lonely,'' has a semi-trap sound that is a winner; Missy Elliott brings the heat on the fun “BURNITUP!''; and “Night'' is a

house and trance anthem. The album's first single, “No Sleeep,'' is a sexy R&B number and on “2 B Loved,'' which features a classic Jackson hook, she's a confident independent woman in love. “You see I'm not the kind of girl you got to babysit, no, no, if you have things to do, I understand,'' she sings, most likely about her beau. And while “Unbreakable'' has some B-level tracks _ including “Take Me Away'' and “Gon' B Alright'' _ the album is a reminder that Jackson is one icon who hasn't lost a beat. That's the way real music goes.

LL Cool J's 26 year old Will Smith's 'Concussion' son arrested to premiere as AFI Fest centerpiece

NEW YORK (AP) _ The 26-year-old son of actor and rapper LL Cool J has been charged with criminal trespass following a confrontation at a New York City restaurant. Prosecutors say Najee Smith and co-defendant Flamur Kastrataj were arraigned on the charge last Tuesday. Authorities say they refused to leave Catch, a restaurant on Ninth Avenue and 13th Street in the city's Meatpacking district, after being escorted to the exit early Tuesday. According to the criminal complaint, the two pushed another patron during the confrontation. Police say Smith became combative when he was asked to leave. Prosecutors say the defendants received pro bono legal services. Their attorneys couldn't immediately be located for comment. A call to LL Cool J's representative and an email message to his agent seeking comment weren't immediately returned.

NEW YORK _ The Will Smith NFL drama “Concussion'' will premiere as the centerpiece to the AFI Fest. The Los Angeles film festival announced Wednesday that the Peter Landesman-directed film will debut at AFI on November 10. Smith stars in the film, which Sony Pictures will release in December, as Dr. Bennet Omalu, the forensic neuropathologist who discovered brain effects from head trauma in football. “Concussion'' has already proven a hot-button movie. The New York Times earlier reported that the film was altered to placate the NFL, a charge Landesman and Sony have denied. Tom Rothman, chairman of the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, said he wanted to unveil “Concussion'' early “so that the discussion can be more informed. San Francisco Jesuit university rescinds honorary degree awarded to Bill Cosby

SAN FRANCISCO _ A Jesuit Catholic university in San Francisco is the latest college to revoke an honorary degree awarded to disgraced comedian Bill Cosby. The University of San Francisco Board of Trustees voted to rescind the 2012 degree, saying that Cosby has acknowledged behaviour inconsistent with criteria for a USF honorary degree. University President Rev. Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J. sent a campus-wide message Wednesday. Cosby admitted to having extramarital relationships with several women, including some who now accuse him of sexual assault. He's never been charged with a crime. The USF board voted on Friday, the same day Brown University's board revoked the doctorate of humane letters it granted Cosby in 1985. Fordham and Marquette universities have also rescinded their degrees. A spokesman for Cosby could not be reached immediately for comment. Advertisment

Raptors' DeRozan has stepped up to become team's vocal leader in camp

BURNABY, B.C. _ Five days into the Toronto Raptors' training camp and a clear vocal leader has emerged. DeMar DeRozan, who once preferred to let his game do his talking, has become the most talkative player, and said it's both by design and a natural evolution. “Just being a leader. I'm just trying to take more of a leadership role and help this team win,'' an upbeat DeRozan said after practice Saturday. “I feel like I've been there in a lot of situations now, to where I can speak up and say stuff to get on somebody or get somebody going.'' DeRozan was asked whether he has to force himself to talk. “Naw, naw, that's easy now. I tell myself to shut up sometimes. It's been going good.'' The 26-year-old is coming off a rough season that saw him miss 21 games early on with a serious groin injury. A year removed from his allstar season, he struggled to refind his form.

That's ancient history, and according to Patrick Patterson, DeRozan has been a vocal “ring leader'' this week at practices at the Fortius Sport & Health complex. “As far as talking to teammates or talking to guys standing on the sideline, making sure guys are paying attention, in tune with what the coaching staff is preaching to us,'' Patterson said. “He's always encouraging everybody. From the jump, DeMar is trying to take the reins of this squad.'' DeRozan was in good spirits Saturday on the eve of Toronto's first pre-season game. The Raptors played the Los Angeles Clippers in a soldout game at Vancouver's Rogers Arena last Sunday. Asked whether training camp ever gets old, DeRozan, who's in his seventh camp, said: “You always get excited, that feeling of going out there and competing. That never gets old, or at least not yet.'' DeRozan said he finds the influx of new players such as elite defender

DeMarre Carroll energizing.

sion will be better equipped both offensively and defensively.

“Everybody is coming out on both ends, definitely bringing the energy. Everybody is learning each other. Everybody is learning something new,'' DeRozan said. “We're all on the same page. Everybody has one goal. That's brought us together.''

“With the experience of guys like DeMarre, playing him at (three different positions). . . It gives us a lot of flexibility from that standpoint.''

He said none of the new guys _ including Carroll, Bismack Biyombo, Cory Joseph and Anthony Bennett_ have taken him particularly by surprise. “Me being a basketball fanatic, a lot of guys came in and I knew their games. I was fans of theirs, especially going against DeMarre. It's always fun going against him. We laugh about it to this day,'' DeRozan said. “It's definitely a great feeling to get the new faces, learning guys better on and off the court.'' Coach Dwane Casey is pleased with his team's progress through the five days of camp, and pointed out that they were rebounding better Saturday than they had all week. But with so many new players in camp, there's been a “sense of urgency'' to camp that wasn't there last season. “It's a different approach,'' Casey said. “I think right now, we understand there's so much we have to get done and learn and get up to speed with. Last year, it was a little bit easier because of the familiarity.'' Casey said while he liked last year's team, he believes his current ver-

The Raptors faced a familiar foe in the Clippers last Sunday. When asked if he was happy to have a break from answering questions about Paul Pierce over the summer, Casey quipped: “Oh that's right, he plays for the Clippers.'' Pierce famously said the Raptors didn't have the “it'' factor last season, and proceeded to lead the Washington Wizards to a sweep of Toronto in the first round of the playoffs. Soon after Game 4, he posted a doctored photo of himself on Facebook and Twitter sitting on the “Game of Thrones'' iron-sword seat, under the headline ``King in the North.'' Sunday's game was one of four pre-season games in Canada this year, the most ever played north of the border. Andrew Wiggins and the Minnesota Timberwolves played the Bulls in Winnipeg last Saturday, then the Raptors play in Ottawa on Oct. 14. The Raptors cap the Canada series when they play the Washington Wizards in Montreal on Oct. 23. All four games are expected to sell out. By Lori Ewing THE CANADIAN PRESS

Rapper/actor/writer Childish Gambino dreams big lease. “I was making something that I felt in the moment,'' Glover says of studio experiments earlier this year. “I do want Childish Gambino to be like Harry Potter (in that) I do want it to be a character that people grow up with. I want to always challenge people but I was like, this acting has been so much fun. And you reach people differently.'' It's very possible those recordings will never see the light of day, he admits.

TORONTO _ Donald Glover feels the clock ticking. The actor/writer/comic/rapper/musician is barely in his 30s, but admits he's already consumed with thoughts of legacy and wonders whether any of the various projects he's taken on will mean anything in the end. “I look at everybody _ Tupac, all those guys _ this is around the time (they peaked),'' Glover says of his current burst of creative energy. “I'm strong enough, I have (the ability) to do it. Glover plays a genius astrophysicist who comes up with an unorthodox solution _ which puts him in scenes with Daniels, Wiig and Ejiofor. It's a relatively small part, but Glover insists the gig nevertheless made a big personal impact, if only to further inspire his creative dreams.

Glover's various endeavours include new music, a TV pilot and a huge new movie, Ridley Scott's galactic thriller “The Martian,'' opening this weekend.

“I was (saying to myself ): 'Just shut up and watch Ridley. Just shut up and watch Kristen and Matt. Learn from Chiwetel','' says Glover, while doing a round of interviews at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates _ Looking for a “vertical city'' to stand in for a futuristic world, actors and filmmakers involved in “Star Trek Beyond'' ended up among the gleaming towers of Dubai. “We came searching for the future and found it,'' said Jeffrey Chernov, one of the film's executive producers. “Star Trek Beyond,'' the third movie in the reboot of the science-fiction series, is the latest film to be partially shot in the United Arab Emirates. Others drawn here include filmmakers like J.J. Abrams, who helmed the last two “Star

Trek'' films and shot parts of the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode VII'' in Abu Dhabi. The city was also a location for the most recent “Fast & Furious'' sequel. Chernov also was an executive producer in 2011's “Mission: Impossible _ Ghost Protocol,'' which saw actor Tom Cruise scale parts of Dubai's Burj Khalifa skyscraper for the movie. Speaking Wednesday to journalists with other cast members in Dubai, Chernov said filmmakers found Dubai's skyscrapers and futuristic vistas appealing. On Friday, authorities in Dubai shut down busy Sheikh
