Jamaica National To Become Commercial Bank
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness Congratulates President Elect Trump Prime Minister Andrew Holness has extended congratulations on behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica, to the President-elect of the United States of America, Mr. Donald J. Trump. The Prime Minister communicated the great value placed by Jamaica on the longstanding friendship and cooperation, which has shaped our bilateral relationship with the United States for more than 50 years. He also articulated a shared commitment to achieving and maintaining economic growth and development for the benefit of the peoples of both countries and for the peoples of the hemisphere. Prime Minister Holness emphasized the intention to build on existing initiatives, to explore new opportunities, as well as the desire to strengthen US/Caribbean and Jamaican relations. The Prime Minister extended his best wishes to President-elect Trump, and for peace and prosperity for the people of the United States of America.
Prince Harry Begins Caribbean Tour BASSETERRE – His Royal Highness Prince Henry (Harry) of Wales touched down to a red carpet welcome on Sunday at the VC Bird International Airport in Antigua aboard a British Airways commercial flight as he begins his 15 day Royal Visit of several Caribbean countries.
Jamaica National Building Society will become the first commercial bank in Jamaica to be owned by its savers. Mutual insurance companies are not new but it is not immediately sure what impact this new commercial bank will have on the lowering of interest rates. The Jamaica National Building Society (JN) at a meeting at the Jamaica Conference Centre down town Kingston, yesterday, November 14, 2016, where savers, shareholders and management assembled to vote on the banking proposal in accordance with law. The regulatory environment, the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) had approved JN’s application for some time now to become a Commercial Bank. Background JN has been built by the merger of small savings and loans entities across Jamaica. One of these was the Westmoreland Building Society, an early merged building society which has helped JN to probably become the largest savings and loans institution in the English speaking Caribbean.
A highlight of Prince Harry’s visit will be participation in the 35th Anniversary of Independence in Antigua and Barbuda and the 50th Anniversary of Independence in Barbados and Guyana. While in Antigua and Barbuda, His Royal Highness will engage in a Youth Sports Festival at the Sir Vivian Stadium showcasing Antigua and Barbuda’s national sports, and how these can empower and engage young people. Prince Harry’s next stop will be St Kitts and Nevis on November 23. As His Royal Highness moves on to other Caribbean island on his Royal Tour, one of the highlights will be a Golden Anniversary Spectacular Mega Concert in Barbados on November 30, which will feature the best of Barbadian talent, from singers and dancers, to orchestras, icons and celebrated entertainers, one of whom will be Rihanna. (PR)
Reports are that some 99 percent of eligible voters associated with JN have voted either by proxy or otherwise to approve the resolution to become a Commercial Bank. The New bank will open its door early next year 2017. Vision Newspaper wishes the newly approved Commercial Bank for Jamaica National Building Society all the success. JN advertises with Vision Newspaper Canada.

The World Electoral College must reject Trump unless he sells his business, top lawyers for Bush and Obama
It is an accepted practice if not convention for the President of the USA to put on hold their personal business interests so as to avoid the perceived or real conflict of interests. Decency must be or the appearance of same must be assured. Trump must set the right example ... lead by example as we like to say. Will Trump listen? ... time will tell ..
The GREAT LION of the Third World Goes Home to Rest - Viva Fidel Fidel Castro is gone, but will never be forgotten. He stood up to the mighty Americans for decades. The trade embargo was a partial failure. Cuba was able to institute self reliance as a way of life. They haven’t done well in training medical practitioners and have exported them. They have not been afraid to send medical personnel to Ebola infected African areas. This is great a humanitarian move and Cuba must be commended for this heroism despite the American embargo. We mourn with all well thinking persons ... the loss of this great man of change, Fidel Castro dead at 90.
Mosul battle rages as ISIS bombings across Iraq kill at least 20 As the senseless loss of lives marches on there are reports of bodies which are headless being uncovered. The figure mentioned is 100. Why did these people die? They deserved to be alive … no one should decide if x lives and y dies. To decapitate someone is barbaric to say the least. ISIS has the ambition to set up a Califate or holy state and anyone who thinks differently must be destroyed. This is so wrong, uncaring and stupid. Respect for life is just for these zealots with such thinking … empty talk. If the God they seek to worship seem so uncaring, then their mission is doomed to fail. We hope and pray Mosul will be liberated fully soon and the innocent victims live in peace … they have suffered enough. What are your views?

News Major General Anderson to be appointed Jamaica’s first National Security Advisor effective December 1 2016
Prime Minister Andrew Holness announces the creation of the office of National Security Advisor, and the appointment of Major General Antony Anderson to the post. Consistent with international best practices in other jurisdictions such as UK, Canada, USA, India, Australia, and in the pursuance of strategic national security management, the National Security Advisor is the principal technical advisor to the government. The creation of the office of the NSA is a critical move in supporting and coordinating Jamaica’s national security super structure.

Moody’s Investor Services Upgrades Jamaica Sovereign Rating and Revises Outlook from Positive to Stable
General Anderson will advise the Prime Minister and the Minister of National Security through the National Security Council (NSC) on matters of internal and external security affairs which broadly include defense, crime and security and public safety related policy and strategy, Inter-agency cooperation, partner nation engagement and regional and international security. He brings to the post the knowledge, expertise, qualification and critical strategic management skills needed to enhance Jamaica’s security framework. General Anderson who has served as Chief of Defence Staff for 6 of his 32 years in the Jamaica Defence Force will be succeeded as CDS by Brigadier Rocky Meade. Brigadier Meade has been Deputy Chief of Defence Staff for five years and has served the JDF for 32 years.
Moody’s Investors Service today upgraded Jamaica’s sovereign senior unsecured rating and provisional shelf ratings from Caa2 to B3 and revised the outlook from positive to stable. In response to this news, Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Honourable Audley Shaw, stated: “I welcome this news which represents an endorsement of the continued progress made by Jamaica in sound economic management and reduction of its public debt. Under the newly-approved Three-Year Standby Arrangement with the IMF, the Government remains firmly committed to fiscal consolida-
tion aimed at further reducing its public debt burden, and to strengthening competitiveness and accelerating private sector-led growth through deep structural reforms. These actions will further strengthen Jamaica’s credit rating in the international capital market.” The ratings are supported by the following factors: significant and sustained fiscal consolidation and strong commitment to continued reforms to reduce the government’s high debt burden ; and significant improvement in the current account and reduced external vulnerability. The rating agents are also of the view that Jamaica has relatively strong institutions compared with similarly rated sovereigns.
Further, recent policy effectiveness reflected in credit positive fiscal consolidation and structural reforms coupled with the Government’s continued commitment to fiscal reforms, and growth enhancement strategy through FDI-financed investment in tourism and infrastructure were commended. Moody’s stated that the reduction in oil prices has also facilitated a reduction in inflation to historically low levels. This, combined with fiscal consolidation, have reduced Jamaica’s external vulnerability, narrowing the current account deficit and attracting FDI inflows The stable outlook assigned to the B3 rating reflects a balance of risks associated with a high debt and Jamaica’s high susceptibility to external shocks, particularly natural disasters. In this regard, the Government is resolute in its thrust to address these risks while seeking to improve the overall economic fundamentals of Jamaica.

Fidel Castro – A True Revolutionary Passes Uncle Sam committed a monumental mistep that has had moral if not catatrophic legal implications.
The death of Fidel Castro has left a void in this hemisphere not likely to ever be filled. In particular in Cuba. For over fifty years the Cuban populace have been subjected to a mean spirited trade embargo especially from the Americans. Bay of Pigs The failed invasion of Cuba, commonly known as the “Bay Of Pigs” which was sup-
ported by the Americans, seriously violated international laws. Cuba was a sovereign nation and for a super power to have acted with impunity or and complicity to aid and abet mercenaries to want to impose their will on a sovreign nation with whom you have disagreements is inexcusable. Two wrongs do not make a right … even the morally bankrupt would have no difficulty comprehending such a position.
Castro and his Communist sympathizers were not saints by any stretch if the imagination but … consultations instead of confrontation was unacceptable. Batista The Americans had planted a dictator/Puppet called Batista. He was deposed and American assets were confiscated or nationalized by the new regime led by Commandante Fidel Castro after (Bapisita’s) deposition. We do not condone such action.
Spoils of Conflict It is no secret that war has its victors and vanquished. Women have been kidnapped and raped and there have been attempts at se sanitization of races, religion, customs …. known as “ethnic cleansing” Defeat The invasion was a humiliating defeat for the Americans and their ill equipped rag tag band of mercenaries. At times we should lick our wounds, lap our tails and accept our situation as it unfolds. The Americans failed to accept the results of the failed Bay Of Pigs invasion. Background In 2006 Castro handed over power to Ruel Castro his brother. “Castro stood up to the super power … the Americans” Vision SIC.
“We salute Castro as a genuine revolutionary. Cuba has lost the father of their revolution” asserts Professor Stephen Golding, hosting “Talking History” sitting in for Professor Verene Shepherd the regular host on Nation Wide Radio, 90.3 FM. Ja. W.I. He played Burning Spears song with lyrics inter alia “Let us recall some of our great heroes who have been fighting for our human rights … Paul Bogle, Marcus Garvey, Mandela, and now Fidel Castro. The Father of Cuba was 90. Canadians are among the leading tourists visiting Cuba. We mourn with the Cuban people at their huge loss. PAJ ALARMED AT THREATS TO MEDIA WORKER, URGES SPEEDY INVESTIGATION eraman has been receiving threatening and abusive phone calls. This has been exacerbated by the harassment of him and his family, as he continues to do his job.
The Press Association of Jamaica is alarmed at the threats being made to a CVM cameraman and the harassment of him and his family, as a direct result of his performing his duties. Following the publication recently of a story about controversial comments made by Opposition Leader Portia Simpson-Miller while on a political party platform, the cam-
“It is ironic that this is happening even as we recently celebrated National Journalism Week,” says PAJ President Dionne Jackson Miller. “Our colleague was doing his job. He brought to national attention comments by one of our elected representatives, the Opposition Leader no less, that sparked a national dialogue, and attracted significant criticism. This is exactly the role that media workers are supposed to play
in informing the public, and we are very disturbed that his life and safety may now be at risk as a result.” The threats have been reported to the police. “We understand that the police have been very helpful,” says Jackson Miller. “We thank them for their efforts so far and strongly urge them to speedily complete their investigations into this matter, which is of great concern to not just the media community, but to the wider society. “Press freedom is one of the foundation stones of any democratic society, and we reject and condemn these actions by thugs trying to intimidate our colleague. We stand with him and our colleagues at CVM, and we encourage and support him as he and his family go through this difficult time.” Commentary Shameful Indeed!
We condemn the perpetrator(s) responsible for threats to CVM cameraman. We will not be intimidated. We say to Portia Simpson Miller and Comrades to rein in their/your supporters. We have no evidence you are involved but these threats come on the heels of the media covering a PNP fracas in South East St. Ann a few weeks ago. Portia Disgraced self … Images both audio and visual of an enraged Opposition Leader at the said meeting has been widely condemned in Social media and else where. Ombudsman The Political Ombudsman Donna Parchment Brown summoned Portia to a meeting yesterday for her to explain her alleged threats and reported unbecoming conduct at said political rally in St. Ann.
There has been turmoil in the constituency as opponents of Lisa “Jezebel” Hanna, MP want to see the back of the former beauty queen. Allegations of untrustworthy dealings in the PNP held Constituency caused an OCG corruption probe .. we await the findings. The MP has denied any wrongdoing. Portia was enraged by these calls for MP Hanna. There are other issues of discontent aired at the meeting. Further details will be posted in Vision Newspaper soon. The threats to the cameraman follows this meeting and came during Journalism Week being celebrated November 20-26, 2016. What a shame and disgracre! Commentary by Hopeton O’ConnorDennie, Senior International Correspondent & photojournalist for Vision Newspaper Canada.
News Perspective: Justin Tradeau Must Attend Fidel Castro’s Funeral The Cold War has long passed and has long ended. Progressive democracies embark on principled non aligned foreign policies …. independent and pragmatic … in your best interest. Despite the pressure being placed on Justin Tradeau, by reactionary elements likely inspired by the down south influence, Canada’s Prime Minister has no choice but to attend and support the proud Cuban people in this time of grief. Do not allow hate to rule the day. That would be shortsighted, indeed. The attack dogs would have won the day if PM Justin surrender to them. Their call lacks real statesmanship and is as worthless as last week’s stale slice of bread … not fit for human consumption. Fidel Castro 2Cold War
Political Capital Strong leaders lead and others even your staunchest critics follow. Disregard any perceived loss of political capital. Be realistic and allow your better judgment to carry the sway. Justin We are calling on PM Justin Tradeau to ignore the attack dogs and attend his late father’s close friend. Fidel Castro was a not only a political friend but a close family friend. Who could stop me from attending a close family friend’s funeral? Only ill health or an act of God could prevent me from making that trip.

Jamaica’s Flag to Fly at Half Mast in Tribute to the late Former Cuban President Jamaican delegation on Tuesday, November 29 to attend the official private mass for the former President in Havana, Cuba.
Castro-at-funeral-of-PierreTrudeauPall Bearer Reports are that in death Pierre Tradeau had Fidel Castro as his Pall Bearer. Son Justin must honour the feelings and most likely the love of his father for Fidel. Did Fidel export Communism to Canada? I did not see any evidence of same on my many visits and residency in Canada. Justin must attend to be there to honour the feelings of PIERRE TRADEAU, a former PM and a great Canadian leader of his time. Pierre stood tall also as a world leader and was a great friend of Jamaica. He opened many doors, for Jamaicans, we love Pierre even in death. We would be saddened if PM Justin did not follow his heart. The Prime Minister of Canada must be in Cuba to mourn Fidel at this time … because it is the right thing to do. Hopeton O’Connor-Dennie is Senior international Correspondent & Photojournalist for Vision Newspaper Canada.
The Jamaican flag will fly at half-mast on (Friday, December 2), on all government offices and national buildings as a tribute to the late former President of the Republic of Cuban Fidel Castro Ruz who died on Friday, November 25. Jamaica will join the rest of Caricom in the symbolic gesture of condolence to mark Mr. Castro’s passing and mourn with the people of Cuba. Prime Minister Holness expressed condolences to the people of Cuba and Mr. Castro’s family as he led a
The Prime Minister said Mr. Castro was an outstanding leader who though coming from a Caribbean island developing state, has had the greatest impact on world history. He added that Castro will be remembered for his passionate speeches in defence of the right to self-determination. Cuba is observing a period of national mourning which will end on December 4. Jamaica and Cuba have strong bilateral relations particularly in the areas of education and health.

Perspective: Slavery Was Lucrative
JLP Wins Local Elections By Landslide
Hanna, troubled South East St. Ann constituency hurled insults at media and the police had to intervene. No arrests were made.
apologize firstly then recognize the need to compensate us for past inhuman acts related to slavery …they benefited greatly and his forefathers are believed to have gotten wealthy from slavery. This wealth was bequeathed to descendants like Cameron.
Cheap labour was scarce, so from a pure economic standpoint if you are able to supply a scarce commodity that is in demand you ,an fetch the highest asking price … or you the supplier is in a strong bargaining position. Slavery did not exist solely because men were immoral or greedy … surely some were and today are still. Slavery was filling an urgent beed for labour to facitate product so as the keep production and commerce alive. Nothing beibg produced or at low a quantity and at too expensive a price is very poor business.
Slavery as abominable as it was filled that gap. Many traders “licked their fingers” as we say in Jamaica, West Indies. Ironically it was not only the sugar … by-product of sugar cane … mainly sugar & rum distilleries, plantations etc where slaves toiled in the harsh tropical sun of 32 plus degrees Celsius … doing back breaking tasks like planning and cutting/reaping by machete, matured sugar cane. … fields had to be prepared for planting. There was little or no mechanization. Cameron Former UK PM refused to
Cameron showed no respect or sensitivity to our demands for Reparations, yet planters/ traders were compensated when slavery ended by Proclamation for disrupting their livelihood … Slavery.
The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has cemented itself as an unstoppable force in the Jamaican political environment. The Andrew Holness led administration entered the Local Elections in a most disadvantageous position being decimated in 2012 ... losing all thirteen then Parish Councils now renamed as Municipal Corporations.
In my poem entitled “Respect” Cameron’s response was immortalized … (use vision search engine to see same.)
They have won the Local Elections by a landslide, defying all odds ... in Jamaica W.I.
Yes, slavery was good business … it was market forces and not abolitionists that ended slavery. Do you agree …let us hear from you. As usual, the verdict is yours. Hopeton O’Connor-Dennie is Senior International Correspondent & Photojournalist for Vision Newspaper Canada.
US Government Suspends Firearm Exports To Jamaica … For Private Use Patrick Powell of murder. Patrick Powell’s firearm file is reported missing from the FLA. The FLA refused to revoke the firearm licence for Patrick Powell up to 5 years after the request was made to effect the revocation (of Powell’s firearm licence). The police made the request. The United States government through its local operatives in their Embassy, Kingston, Jamaica W.I, has announced the immediate suspension of firearm exports to Jamaica for private use. Following the acquittal of Patrick Powell for the Firearm killing of 17 year old Kahjeel Mais allegedly by someone driving a X6 which had a fender bender with taxi driven by one Wayne Anthony Wright. Patrick Powell was acquitted of murdering young Mais. The taxi driver testified that he could not identify the driver of the X6. The court had no choice but to acquit the accused
The US government cited the poor performance of the FLA as the main reason for the suspension of firearm exports to Jamaica for private use. We support the move as at some point we need to get really serious about our affairs. Murders need to be reduced dramatically in Jamaica … the use of the gun is the main weapon of choice. Finally, in my perspective the FLA board cannot be asked to investigate itself. It is like asking a mongoose to have superintendence over your chicken coop. As
Portia Under Pressure
you know mongoose love to eat chickens.
The results so far is a reversal and almost full control of about 10 out of 13 possible Municipalities which were up for grabs. The JLP made strategic moves in terms of timing, which seem to have served them well. Lisa “Jezebel” Hanna It was a relatively incident free day, based on police reports apart from a reported voter intimidation if St. Catherine and verbal assault of Journalists in the former beauty queen’s constituency. Media covering voting in Lisa “Jezebel”
There has been calls for renewal in the People’s National Party which has been interpreted as an attack on the leadership of Party Leader Portia Simpson Miller. The loyalists have encircled their wagons and came to the defense of Portia Simpson Miller saying she should be given a chance to set her own time table for her departure and ultimately into political retirement. Many of her supporters disagree. Popular Vote The Jamaica Labour Party has overwhelmingly won the popular vote. These are preliminary counts and we have to await the final count and certification by the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ). The elections are conducted by the ELECTORAL OFFICE OF JAMAICA (EOJ). The results are not likely to change significantly on the final count. PM Holness and his team of the Hon. Desmond McKenzie et al must be congratulated for the success of the JLP. This is a momentous moment for the JLP. The prize Municipality is the KSAC which the JLP seem to have captured from the PNP narrowly. A win is a win!
Jamaican Prime Minister issues directive to end violence by state agencies as government launches Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children Campaign
Joshua Polacheck, of the US embassy in a thirstily worded communique, advised of the suspension of firearm exports for private us to Jamaica. The bundling at the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA) was cited as the main reason for the review.
children campaign ” Violence on our most vulnerable, our children is very wrong. We hope this campaign will be a success as it is a move in the right direction.
Ballistic Evidence Spent shells from the firearm casings that killed Mais have been identified as strikingly similar by ballistic experts with markings as the firearm allegedly licensed to Powell?. A double unsolved murder had similar shell casings which were found at the murder scene in 2009. That case has now been reopened. There were no eye witnesses. Hopeton O’Connor-Dennie is Senior International Correspondent & Photojournalist for Vision Newspaper Canada.
Citizens of all persuasion must join with Prime Minister Andrew Holiness to join in the “Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children Campaign.” Speaking at the launch, on November 24 at OPM. The PM said inter alia ” We should make agencies and departments of government including the police places of non violence against

The seven track project includes a remix to their first collaboration ‘Do You Wanna’ featuring rapper Red Cafe. The original single climbed the ITunes Reggae
Charts and peaked at the number one spot last year while the music video enjoyed rotation on US based video platform MTV. “We honestly didn’t plan, it just happened after our first studio session, we did two songs and the vibe was just right and everything just happened from there. Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and was also former capital of Canada.
This stately looking design looks similar to the Penitentiary commonly called the “Kingston Pen”, located in Kingston, Ontario. Canada. This would not be surprising as both countries, Jamaica and Canada were former British colonies … you will notice similar names, “Kingston”.
The undersigned lived, studied and was a, newspaper writer, broadcaster etc. in Kingston, Ontario, Canada in the late 1990s.
In my yet to be published book “Tales Of Two Kingstons” these similarities are catalogued.

Montego Bay, Jamaica, W.I. _The ‘big ship’ captain Freddy McGregor and Reggae Sumfest boss Joe Bogdanovich are now on board the entertainment music Call to Action: “Entertainers Against Crime and Violence”. The Mega Concert, envisioned to draw up to 50 Jamaican entertainers, is destined for Dump up Beach, December 4, 2016 and scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. “Entertainers Against Crime and Violence” is a voluntary effort of entertainers, both gospel and secular, coming together as one voice. Togeth-
er they make a statement that crime and violence is crippling the entire entertainment industry as people are not coming out to see performers, neither are police giving permits for events in what is considered a war zone. This further affects the persons who make a livelihood from these events. McGreggor was quick to get on board, being dissatisfied with the current crime situation and its effect on the music industry. Bogdanovich, the new owner of Reggae Sumfest, feels his contribution to this venture will help to bring about stability to the life of the people. Like a jolt of energy, it will also help to reinvigorate the music industry, and prepare for the staging of

Jamaica’s Usain Bolt and Elaine Thompson Up For Kingston College ends 16-year senior Awards title drought with Walker Cup win lighting Rio 2016 Olympic Games also being his last in a sport-defining career, the Jamaican may very well also be able to count on the emotional vote.
second title this season with the Olivier Shield still to play for.
Van Niekerk's 43.03 seconds gold-medal run in Rio shattered a 17-year record in the 400m and also clocked a 9.98 in the 100m to become the first man in history to run faster than 10 seconds for 100m, 20 seconds for 200m, and 44 seconds for 400m.
Track and field's global authority, the IAAF, will hand out awards to the year's top male and female athletes amid a coming together of the sport's hierarchy, which is also expected to bring with it considerable change towards repairing a damaged organisation. Jamaicans Usain Bolt and Elaine Thompson are up for the respective male and female Athlete of the Year awards, but by the end of the week, its likely to be IAAF president Sebastian Coe who leaves the principality with the biggest prize of all - trust. Coe inherited an organisation on the brink of a total breakdown, following a massive doping scandal and the uncovering of conspiracies at the highest level of the organisation, a crisis that has led to criminal proceedings against several former top IAAF figures, including long-standing president Lamine Diack, and the suspension of Russian athletes following evidence of statebacked doping. After enduring a torrid year in the hot seat as the new IAAF boss, Coe arrived in Monaco hoping to receive the rubber stamp for the 150-point reform package that he believes will not only return credibility to the sport and the organisation but also ensure best practices in terms of administration and governance, while signifi-cantly increasing the commercial and marketing weight behind the sport.
Farah, like Bolt, continued his Olympic reign, again winning the 5000m and 10,000m in Rio. Council members will vote on Coe's proposal, which includes devolution of presidential power, the implementation of an independent integrity unit, which will manage doping and non-doping integrity issues and a new financial structure, at a special congress tomorrow, and by all indications, he is expected to get the backing of his peers, with the Athletes' Commission and several influential member federations also throwing their support behind the plan. Before that happens, however, the athletics world will come together to celebrate its 'top-ofthe-class' athletes, with Bolt and Thompson among a top field of finalists, which is completed by South African Wayde van Niekerk and Britain's Mo Farah for the male award, and Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana and Poland's Anita Wlodarczyk joining Thompson in the running for the top female award. COULD BAG SIXTH TITLE Bolt, who already holds the record for most wins by a man or woman for the Athlete of the Year award, can push his tally to six, after his successes in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Him becoming the first athletics competitor to win three gold medals at three successive Olympic Games is in itself a strong claim, but with the year-high-
Thompson established herself as the new queen of the sprints, going unbeaten in the 100m, while taking the sprint double in Rio, with her winning 100m time of 10.71 being the second fastest in an Olympic 100m final. She also won silver in the 4x100m and bronze in the 60m at the world indoors. Both her rivals will take world record marks into the considerations. Ayana ran 29:17.45 to set a new 10,000m mark on her way to winning gold in Rio, knocking off a record that stood for 23 years, while taking Olympic bronze plus the Diamond Race title over 5000m. Hammer thrower Wlodarczyk registered three of the five best marks ever in her event on her way to winning gold and twice broke the record this year, eventually landing the implement 82.98m to close her season unbeaten in 30 finals, with the European title and the IAAF World Hammer Throw Challenge trophy also on her mantle. Awards will also be presented to the top rising stars in the sport, with special focus and recognition also in place for coaching achievement and women in athletics. www.jamaica-gleaner.com
Kingston College (KC) shook the proverbial monkey off their backs when they lifted the ISSA/ FLOW Walker Cup with a 2-0 win over Manning Cup champions Jamaica College (JC) in a fiercely contested final inside the National Stadium. Goals on either side by former Camperdown stalwarts Fabian Grant (1st minute) and Andre McCatty (54th), handed the North Street-based team their ninth hold on the knockout title, joining neighbours St George’s College as the most successful teams. It was also sweet redemption for the Ludlow Bernard-conditioned KC to salvage a piece of silverware from the 2016 campaign, and in the process, break a lengthy title drought dating back to 2000. “For me it’s not really that emotional, it is more emotional for the players because they are the ones who work and toil hard all season. “I’m just the coach, I’m the one that puts them out there, but they are the ones who have to go out there and play, and this afternoon they showed a lot of grit and determination and we withstood whatever it is that JC had to offer,” Bernard told journalists. For JC’s Miguel Coley, faulty defending proved their undoing which delayed their bid for a
“We gave away two soft goals, but congrats to KC (as) I think they defended. Well we also had some half chances that we didn’t take, so we just have to assess the game and move on. We just have to get the boys up again and ready to play,” he noted. The stage was set for an enthralling battle between two old foes, and though it did not quite live up to expectations, the moderate crowd occupying the Grandstand area were not left disappointed. KC were off to a frantic start courtesy of Grant’s beautifully struck right-footer from 20 yards out which kissed the underside of the crossbar on its way in. The score remained unchanged at the break as both teams exchanged blows in end-to-end action, but failed go breach the defensive armours. On the resumption, JC came out spirited, but took another critical hit nine minutes in, this time from an even more scrumptious effort as McCatty drove home a left-footer from 25 yards, which left custodian Kajay Johnson no chance. McCatty again went close on the hour mark with a well-taken freekick from distance, but Johnson got down in time to deny him a second. JC increased their tempo in the probe to get back on the score sheet, but KC would have none of it and kept their defensive line tight to hang tough to the clean sheet. www.jamaicaobserver.com

Minister Bartlett to Address the Opening of Redesigned Marcus Mosiah Garvey Multimedia Museum

synergies and opportunities are created to increase competitiveness.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the tourism sector is extremely critical in securing sustainable growth and job creation. “Tourism is one of the largest foreign exchange earners and employers. Tourism is also one of the few industries where the region has both a global comparative and competitive advantage,” he declared.
Mr Holness stated that in order to be effective and efficient, Governments must remain committed to being catalysts to private sector success. According to him, this is important to ensure an economy moves forward.
Speaking at the reopening of the Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island, in Nassau, Bahamas, at the weekend Prime Minister Holness noted that tourism greatly impacts many sectors including entertainment, transportation, financial services, agriculture and manufacturing. He said it is paramount that

Appleton Investment Timely as Tourism Remains on Growth Path facility and its expansion by another 25,000 square feet by October 2017.
APPLETON, St. Elizabeth; Jamaica, November 20, 2016: Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett has welcomed as timely, a US$7.2 million investment that will make the long established Appleton Estate Rum Tour the gateway for tourism on the Jamaica’s South Coast. Minister Bartlett headed a list of dignitaries who broke ground recently for the Appleton Estate Visitor Centre which on completion, will be a showpiece surrounded by vast fields of sugar cane and home of Appleton, one of the world’s top rum brands. The Tourism Minister was particularly pleased that the project was being undertaken in an area of Jamaica
where investment of that magnitude has not been a common feature and he saw it as “the beginning of a new chapter in employment opportunities for a large number of people in the Siloah, Appleton and Maggoty area and to build out with you a seminal and aspirational experience that will bring millions of people to these parts over the coming years.” Appleton Estate is owned by J. Wray & Nephew (JWN), a subsidiary of Gruppo Campari and the investment project was outlined by JWN’s Chairman, Clement “Jimmy” Lawrence, who noted that it will provide “a unique visitor experience.” It will involve upgrading of the existing
The main building will be the welcome centre with a theatre, luxurious bar, five-star restaurant and other amenities preceding the historical tour of the estate’s distillery and its ageing warehouses. It is highly anticipated that the rail service which ground to a halt many years ago, will be rolling again around 2017 or shortly thereafter and form an integral part of the plan to more than double the 50,000 visitors who currently take the Appleton Rum Tour. Minister Bartlett lauded JWN for “going beyond manufacturing to expanding the range of offerings that Jamaica provides as a destination and helping to make us a much desired place that people want to visit.” He was also pleased that elements of the exciting expansion plan, namely food and music, were two of the passion points that will attract visitors. “So you have a complete offering here that will excite everyone who wants to come to Jamaica and within that frame will encapsulate all that a visitor needs when he gets into a destination,” said Mr. Bartlett.
With the inclusion of a state of the art restaurant under the project, Minister Bartlett said “we see this as a bold statement that Jamaica is about to make to the world as a centre of gastronomy.” Also, work is progressing by the Ministry’s newly formed Gastronomy Network to, among other things, create a gastronomy mapping platform with easily accessible information on the best food offerings island-wide; foster the development of food tours across the country, including elements of food preparation and building out festivals as a product for gastronomy tourism. The Appleton Rum Tour will be the centrepiece of that gastronomy arrangement for the South Coast. He implored Appleton to aim for a level of increase in visitors to the attraction way beyond its own projection, “because we are growing the industry at a rate that will enable you to do that. Cruise is going to grow exponentially and you must prepare yourself for the post 2017 arrival of the Appleton Train again. And you must prepare yourself for the expansion of the highway within these areas that is going to create
connectivity in this Appleton area through Accompong and back into Montego Bay.” Commentary We are delighted that the world famous Appleton Tour will get a shot in the arm as there are plans to invest a further J$7+ million to refurbish facilities to improve the tourism offering. Details are attached with respect to these announced upgrades. We hope this will result in improved visitor numbers in keeping with tourism growth projections. Minster Bartlett has been promoting the gastronomical aspects of his tourism portfolio that of food and drink. That is a good focus. The way to many person’s heart is through their stomach. Congrats to Appleton, you are proving that you are not only rum … and you not only engag in bar talk.
