The Caribbean Police: 12 year old Jamaica boy fatally stabbed by classmate in classroom

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Police say a 12-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed to death by a sixthgrade classmate at a Jamaican school. Authorities say Shaheim Lewis was killed Monday inside a classroom of the Barrett Town All Age School in the northern parish of St. James. An 11-year-old student has been taken into custody. Police report that the two children got into a fight and the younger student pulled a knife on his classmate. The island’s education ministry says it has sent a “trauma team’’ to the school. Education Minister Ronald Thwaites says guidance counsellors have also been made available to the accused student’s relatives.

Official: 2 Cuban nurses ‘brutally attacked’ in Jamaican town where they provided free care

NEWS Felon sentenced to 2 1/2 years in US Virgin Islands prison after bringing bullets to islands bean territory's main island of St. Thomas.

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, Virgin Islands _ U.S. authorities say a convicted felon was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in a U.S. Virgin Islands prison after arriving on a flight from Florida with 290 rounds of ammunition in his luggage.

Last year, Bridges pleaded guilty to possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspectors found a cache of bullets in the 31-year-old's luggage when he came to the U.S. territory aboard a 2013 flight from Fort Lauderdale. In 2006, Bridges was convicted in Georgia of carrying a concealed weapon and fleeing to avoid arrest. In 2009, he was convicted of a drug crime in Oklahoma.

Bahamas judge denies bail to wife accused of killing podiatrist

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Jamaica’s health ministry says two nurses from Cuba have been ``brutally attacked and injured’’ by a gunman who invaded their residence in the small Jamaican town where they were providing free medical care. Health Minister Fenton Ferguson says Monday’s attack on the women in the town of Buff Bay was ``unforgivable, especially since they have committed themselves to service to the people of that community.’’ Ferguson says the nurses are hospitalized in stable condition. They have been working at a hospital in the small coastal community in northeast Jamaica. Area parliamentarian Daryl Vaz says a suspect has been detained by police. For years, Cuba has sent numerous doctors and nurses to provide free care in Jamaica and other countries across the region. The Associated Press

The World Obama to make first visit as president to Kenya, country of his father’s birth

WASHINGTON _ President Barack Obama will make his first trip as president to Kenya, the country of his father’s birth. The White House says Obama will visit Kenya in July for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, which brings together business leaders, international organizations and governments. This will be the first time the summit takes place in sub-Saharan Africa. Obama visited Kenya as a U.S. senator, but never as president. During a trip to other African countries last year, he said he was likely to visit Kenya before leaving the White House. The president’s father came to the United States from Kenya for school and returned to his home country after his son’s birth. The elder Obama died more than 30 years ago, though the president has other family still living in Kenya.

S. African opposition leader accuses president of misusing security, leading to ‘dictatorship’

JOHANNESBURG _ A South African opposition leader says the country is on a “road to a dictatorship,’’ accusing the president of manipulating state security departments.

NASSAU, Bahamas _ A judge in the Bahamas has denied bail to a woman accused of fatally stabbing her husband, a well-known podiatrist from Australia. An official with the Bahamas Supreme Court said by phone that Donna Vasyli appeared in court Thursday. She previously pleaded not guilty to murdering Phillip Vasyli.

His body was found March 24 at the couple's upscale home in New Providence Island. Police have not released a motive. Phillip Vasyli established three podiatry clinics in Sydney and later founded an orthotic footwear company that sells products in the U.S., the United Kingdom and elsewhere. The Associated Press

Speaking to journalists, Malema also said he expected little from a forthcoming report from a judicial commission tasked with investigating the shooting and killing of more than 40 striking miners in 2013, because the commission was appointed by Zuma. He said the report will be suppressed if it reflects negatively on Zuma’s government. Jay Z, Madonna, Beyonce, Rihanna among superstar owners of new music streaming service

NEW YORK _ Madonna, Rihanna, Beyonce and Jay Z are among the A-List musicians who are co-owners of Tidal, a streaming service being billed as the first artist-owned platform for music and video. Kanye West, Daft Punk, Alicia Keys, Jack White and Nicki Minaj also announced that they are co-owners of the streaming service that quietly launched in October at an event Monday in New York City.

The celebrities _ which also included Jason Aldean, Usher, members of Arcade Fire and deadmau5 _ stood in a line, and in solidarity by mostly wearing black onstage as Keys spoke to the audience at Skylight at Moynihan Station in Manhattan. Keys called the event “a graduation.''

“So we come together before you on this day, March 30th, 2015, with one voice in unity in the hopes that today will be another one of those moments in time, a moment that will forever change Keys said the artists hope the course of music hisTidal will “forever change tory. Details about the streaming service were vague. The membership-based service _ similar to subscription service Spotify _ will provide music and exclusive video content that users can stream on computers, tablets and smartphones or listen to offline. It is being offered at two price points: about $10 for standard sound quality and $20 for “lossless high fidelity sound quality.'' The venue for the event was transformed to display a walkway paying tribute to the different decades in music, starting with the 1950s. Coldplay's Chris Martin

and Calvin Harris, who both appeared via video, are also co-owners. “Our mission goes beyond commerce, it goes beyond technology. Our intent is to preserve music's importance in our lives,'' Keys said. “Music is the language of love, of laughter, of heartbreak, of mystery. It's the world's true, true, without question, universal language.'' Each of the owners signed documents as the events as the audience screamed when they walked to a table in the centre of the stage. Texas Department of Public Safety officials cited Spears for deficiencies that require counselling by a supervisor. Spears' attorney said the trooper didn't know about the rapper's criminal record. The citation isn't a formal disciplinary action, so Spears can't appeal.

AUSTIN, Texas _ A state trooper has been reprimanded for posing for a photo with Snoop Dogg at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, because

the rapper has several convictions for drug possession. Billy Spears was working at the March event when

Snoop Dogg asked to take a picture. The artist posted the image to Instagram with the comment, “Me n my deputy dogg.''

Snoop Dogg also took a photograph with an Austin policewoman. A police department spokeswoman said officers may not associate with known criminals, but the photo didn't constitute “inappropriate association.''

STUDY: HALF OF RAPPER DEATHS ARE MURDERS

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Among rappers who die, one in two die of murder. That's according to a study by Dianna Theadora Kenny, professor of psychology and music at the University of Sydney. She examined the deaths of more than 13,000 musicians

and found that 51 percent of deaths in rap and 51.5 percent in hip-hop were murders. Her study found murder was the cause in just 6 percent of musician deaths overall. Kenny tells The Washington Post it does not mean rappers will die from murder, but the study provides a retrospective on past deaths. Her other findings: metal and punk musicians are at the biggest risk for accidental deaths; country, folk and jazz musicians tend to die of cancer; blues musicians tend to die of heart problems and gospel musicians have the lowest suicide rates

He says money and fame creates a fog, but once they got through the fog, they realized they were talented men. He says they would have made another N.W.A. album. UNION, N.J. (AP) _ Kean University in New Jersey wanted Common as commencement speaker for the music he's made. Now it's cancelled him because of the music he's made. The Record newspa-

per reports Common was announced as the speaker on Monday but university spokeswoman Susan Kayne says the announcement was made prematurely. Kayne says students expressed interest in Common because he composed the Oscar-winning song “Glory'' with John Legend, who was their last commencement speaker. However, state troopers consider it a slap in the face to invite Common because of “A Song for Assata.'' It's a track he did in 2000 about Assata Shakur, who was convicted of killing a state trooper in 1973.

To Pimp a Butterfly Kendrick Lamar

The Album About Nothing

ludaversal Ludacris

Kendrick Lamar recently announced the March 23 release date for his next album, the hugely-anticipated follow-up to 2012’s good kid, m.A.A.d. city. While details on that currently untitled album are still scarce, he just posted the above image to his Instagram account. It’s not yet confirmed, but given the “Parental Advisory” tag and this tweet from TDE label boss Anthony Tiffith, it’s very possible that it’s the album’s artwork. Update: The title of the album is, indeed, To Pimp a Butterfly, Rolling Stone reports.

Reggae recording star, and 3 time JUNO Award winner Exco Levi has announced a date for the launch of his debut album, Country man; After his 15 years of recording experience including almost 100 singles which has earned him multiple awards in Canada, the US and Jamaica, Exco is ready to release the 19 track album produced by Donovan Germaine for Penthouse Records and Exco’s newly formed High Priest Records The deeply personal album which was written by Exco, bears songs that describe his challenges as a new immigrant to Canada, the mind set of children who are not on the right path, and Levi’s reliance on God for strength and support throughout the good and not so good times in his life.

Continuing with the “Seinfeld” theme from his mixtapes; rapper Wale’s next album will be called “The Album About Nothing” and is set for a March 31 release date. The 14-track album will include features from J. Cole, SZA, Usher and Jeremih, as well as production from Jake One, DJ Khalil and more.

Ludacris’ album Ludaversal has been forthcoming for quite some time. After numerous push backs, the Atlanta-based rapper and actor has finally stamped down a more sturdy release date and recently has given out some details about the album. A video released by Revolt TV shows Ludacris talking about the album during a listening party. David Banner, Big K.R.I.T. and Usher all make the cut on the forthcoming LP.

Kentucky forward Trey Lyles thriving in role as the Wildcats' X factor in NCAA Tournament 11-rebound effort in a 64-51, round-of-32 victory over Cincinnati included a dunk and a spin move for a basket that helped the Wildcats retain momentum against the physical Bearcats. He's playing small forward, but can slide over to power forward, or even centre depending on the matchup. Lyles tries to get Kentucky's other post players involved, though Calipari believes his strength is finishing, not facilitating. “He likes to think he's a play-maker,'' the coach said this week. “Drives me absolutely crazy. His playmaking is turnover-making. “When you talk about finishing around the basket, when you talk about one-dribble pull-ups on the run, you talk about being able to avoid and finish near the rim, making free throws, making pressure free throws, he is our X-factor. He's the one guy that can separate our team.'' Kentucky's Trey Lyles waves after the team's 78-39 win over West Virginia in a college basketball game in the NCAA men's tournament regional semifinals, Friday, March 27, 2015, in Cleveland. Kentucky advanced to face Notre Dame in the regional finals Saturday. (AP Photo/Aaron Josefczyk)

INDIANAPOLIS _ First came the leg injury that delayed Trey Lyles' inclusion in Kentucky's platoon system until the fall. A midseason bout of strep throat followed, sidelining him for three games.

“I'm just going out there and doing what he (Calipari) asks me to do,'' said Lyles, who has no problem with the X-factor label. “He tells me all the time to just execute and play hard.''

The impressive performances between those absences are why coach John Calipari says the 6-foot10 Lyles is the “X-factor'' for the top-ranked Wildcats.

Lyles has been playing some of his best basketball in the NCAA Tournament, averaging 11.1 points and 7.3 rebounds. He is a threat that Wisconsin must neutralize in Saturday's Final Four rematch in Indianapolis, Lyles' hometown. The winner will face whoever advances in the Michigan State-Duke matchup in the other semifinal game.

Several players have worn that label this season for Kentucky (38-0). But it particularly fits Lyles because his athleticism makes him difficult to defend or beat, creating another matchup problem for opponents already struggling to contain Wildcats 7-footer Willie Cauley-Stein and 6-11 Karl-Anthony Towns.

Kentucky's frontcourt is a challenge for most teams and Lyles' versatility further complicates things. His quickness allows him to play inside and on the perimeter. His 11-point,

Lyles helped bring the Wildcats together after junior forward Alex Poythress' season-ending knee injury in mid-December. Originally playing on Kentucky's second platoon, Lyles was thrust into the starting lineup not long after he had finally started getting in the flow of things following his recovery from the leg injury that made him a bystander during the team's summer Bahamas exhibition tour. But just as Lyles' game was taking shape, he had to miss three games at midseason with what was initially described as an undisclosed illness. Calipari tried to have fun with all the questions, turning Lyles' absence into a “Where's Waldo?'' type of situation. Lyles eventually revealed it was strep throat, an illness he endures twice a year that requires isolation

to avoid contaminating others. Despite the timing of the setback, Lyles' father, Tom, remained confident his son would return stronger and better. He demonstrated that with back-to-back career highs of 18 points against Mississippi State and ranked Arkansas, and hasn't looked back. “He's a natural scorer and a natural rebounder, and that's something he's always prided his game on,'' the father said by phone. “Seeing him do that with the amount of confidence he has and the effort he's put in is good to see.'' A lot of people in Indianapolis are eager to see if Lyles can follow up winning last year's Class 4A high school state title with Arsenal Tech at Bankers Life Fieldhouse with an NCAA championship just a few blocks away at Lucas Oil Stadium. Tom Lyles is preparing for a crush of family and supporters while encouraging his son to stay focused. That's not a problem for Lyles. He's motivated to move on from what he thinks was a subpar nine-point, five-rebound effort in the 68-66 regional final win over Notre Dame. Kentucky still managed to cut down the nets and advance. “It was great, being out there and having fun,'' Lyles said of the postgame celebration. “There was a little relief after that game, but we're focused on the next one now.'' Shad Moss, a.k.a. Bow Wow, bites into acting with 'CSI: Cyber' said he and his character are opposites, but they do share a couple of things in common. For one, Moss said he's a “very'' tech-savvy person. He also knows what it feels like to be a victim of the sort of crime his character investigates. “My bank account was hacked.... It was a mess,'' said the Los Angeles resident. Now, he makes sure he takes precautions with his phone. “My passwords have to be like sayings like, 'ILikeThoseShoesTiedTight,''' said Moss.

TORONTO _ Shad Moss, a.k.a. Bow Wow, has joined a new pack. With the days of using “Lil'' in his rapper stage name long behind him, the 28-year-old is all grown up and focusing heavily on his acting career. His latest role is among his biggest: a starring turn as a digital forensic tech on the hit new series “CSI: Cyber,'' which airs at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CTV. “The thing I like about acting is, I get a chance to be free,'' he said in an interview this week in Toronto.

“It's a fun, creative environment, different from the hip-hop world.... And I have a passion for acting.'' Moss, who was discovered at age five by hip-hop star Snoop Dogg, has acted in films including “Like Mike'' and “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.'' His TV credits include smaller roles on “Entourage,'' “Smallville'' and “Ugly Betty.''

“I don't keep anything in my phone. Nothing that can damage my image or anything.... You've just got to be careful. I don't take crazy pictures or I don't keep pictures in my phone. Once I've put it up, I delete it for space.'' “CSI: Cyber'' also stars recent Oscar winner Patricia Arquette as a former behavioural psychologist who heads the FBI team. Other cast members include James Van Der Beek as a former U.S. Marine who is second in command. “Patricia is real. She's dope,'' said Moss. “Patricia is definitely one of the realest women I've ever met.''

On “CSI: Cyber,'' he plays a former hacker who has to infiltrate his old circles to gain information.

He also relishes being on the show with Van Der Beek of “Dawson's Creek'' fame.

“We definitely tease James with old pictures and photos

of his 'Dawson' days with all the hair and stuff,'' he said with a laugh. “I'm just happy for James to be on board and for me and him to work together and have a lot of scenes together. “It's dope, man. This has definitely been a terrific ride.'' Even while working on a hit show, Moss _who has sold more than 10 million albums to date _ is chipping away at a new sixth studio album. “Underrated'' has been in the works for several years but is said to be due out later this year. Moss said he just spent two weeks recording tracks for the project. “Straight, every day. Living out of the booth, sleeping in the booth, not coming out of the booth. Two days, three days, no showers _ it's how it goes sometimes. It's how it goes.'' He's now trying to figure out how to release the tracks. “I just want to put out hot songs, and that's what I'm going to do,'' said Moss, noting he might get onboard with Jay Z's newly launched music-streaming service Tidal. “It's all about finding strategic ways to sell your music now. It's not about, 'Oh here's the album date.' No, it's not going to work, it's not going to sell.'' By Victoria Ahearn THE CANADIAN PRESS

Play about Maya Angelou's power as friend, mentor in development The book is filled with Angelou's words and Smiley's remembrances of what she meant to him at difficult moments in his life. But there were conflicts as well: He writes of a 2008 call from Angelou expressing “a bit of alarm'' that Smiley's broadcasts were pressing Democratic nominee Barack Obama too hard on the issues as he sought to become the first African-American president.

LOS ANGELES _ In the nearly 30-year friendship that Tavis Smiley shared with Maya Angelou, he learned the renowned writer's views on life and how to live it to the fullest.

1969 autobiography, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,'' had much to share with a young man eager to grow, Smiley said. He was 21 and she was 58 when they first met in the mid-1980s.

the newly announced TV and Broadway versions of the 1970s hit musical ``The Wiz.'' Leon won a Tony for the 2014 revival of “A Raisin in the Sun'' starring Denzel Washington.

One year after Angelou's death, TV and radio host Smiley is joining with Tony Award-winning director Kenny Leon to develop a stage adaptation of “My Journey With Maya,'' Smiley's new memoir about the invaluable relationship.

“We find our path by walking it,'' Angelou told him repeatedly over the years, he recounted. She also said that “nothing human is alien to me.''

But I'm really wrestling with whether or not she may be the greatest renaissance woman, period,'' Smiley said. ___ Lynn Elber is a national television columnist for The Associated Press.
