The Caribbean In Jamaica, new law will allow witnesses to appear in island courts via video testimony

NEWS Jamaica's Blue and John Crow Mountains named UNESCO World Heritage site national park in eastern Jamaica and boast the island's highest peak.

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ A new Jamaican law allows witnesses to testify by live video links or videotape. The Ministry of Justice said Thursday that law is expected to improve access to justice for child witnesses and other victims who have avoided testifying in courts due to fear. It’s also expected to help physically disabled witnesses. There’s also hope it can improve the efficiency of Jamaica’s badly backlogged courts. So far, only one courtroom has been outfitted to accommodate video testimony, but the government says preparations are nearly finished at the Supreme Court. . The Associated Press

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Jamaica's lush Blue and John Crow Mountains have become the island's first UNESCO World Heritage site. The Ministry of Youth and Culture said Friday that it is the first such cultural and natural site for the Caribbean region.

They also are home to the Moore Town Maroons, descendants of escaped slaves who joined an autonomous African community during the colonial era. The community and its music previously obtained recognition from UNESCO. The mountains also produce Blue Mountain coffee, one of the world's most expensive coffees. The Associated Press

The World Riots after death of man in police custody draw comparisons with US protests

THE HAGUE, Netherlands _ Dutch police have detained some 200 people for ignoring a ban on public assembly imposed in a neighbourhood hit by days of latenight rioting following the death of a man in police custody. Four nights of rioting in a predominantly immigrant neighbourhood in The Hague has drawn comparisons with angry protests that erupted in the United States following deaths of black men at the hands of white police officers. Prosecutors investigating Sunday’s death of Mitch Henriquez, a 42-year-old from the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba, say he likely died of oxygen starvation caused during his arrest at a music festival. The five officers involved have been suspended. Henriquez’s family on Friday called for a silent march in his memory Saturday and appealed for calm. The Associated Press

US Coast Guard seizes haul of cocaine, detains 5 on Guyana flagged fishing boat

St Maarten group says sea turtles, raccoons offered for illegal sale on online marketplace the protected creatures were harmed. It wasn't immediately clear if police made any arrests.

KINGSTON, Jamaica _ U.S. authorities say they seized a haul of cocaine and arrested five suspected smugglers on a disabled fishing boat shortly before it sank off the Dominican Republic. The U.S. Coast Guard says personnel aboard a cutter arrested three Jamaicans and two Guyanese. They also seized 215 pounds (98 kilograms) of cocaine. The Guyana-registered fishing boat was stopped south of the Dominican Republic on July 2 while it was rapidly taking on water. Monday’s statement says the U.S. crew found nearly 100 packages of drugs aboard. The suspects were taken into custody on the U.S. island of Puerto Rico by agents with the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force. The Associated Press (AP Photo/Dieu Nalio Chery, File)

A conservation group in St. Maarten says a local Internet marketplace has illegally offered endangered sea turtle hatchlings. The Nature Foundation non-profit says a “growing number of wild animals'' are being advertised on local online sites. The group says it managed to intervene in the sea turtle sales over the weekend before

The conservation group distributed screenshots of what appear to be three leatherback hatchlings being offered for sale online. Raccoons have been advertised locally in recent days. Group manager Tadzio Bervoets says it closely monitors the Internet marketplaces for illegal wildlife sales. Dutch St. Maarten shares a tiny Caribbean island with French St. Martin. Smithsonian defends continuing exhibit featuring Bill Cosby’s art collection on National Mall WASHINGTON _ While many companies and universities have distanced themselves from Bill Cosby as sexual misconduct allegations mounted, Smithsonian officials have concluded an exhibit showcasing his art collection should continue. Smithsonian Undersecretary Richard Kurin says the display is an art exhibit, not a tribute to the life and career of Cosby. About a third of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art’s 50th anniversary exhibition came from Bill and Camille Cosby’s extensive African-American art collection. Two-thirds came from the museum’s own collection. Even without the assault allegations, the exhibit raised concerns. Showcasing a private collection in a prominent museum can enhance the artwork’s market value. Now the Smithsonian has revealed to The Associated Press that the Cosbys also funded the exhibition with a $716,000 gift.

Ghana’s dancehall is like old Jamaican dancehall – Kombolo want to take a bit from what they have not helped in building. For instance, when you watch Ghana music awards nominations, the reggae dancehall category is very poor and that clearly signifies the fact that they have no knowledge about reggae dance hall music,” he added.

Ghanaian international reggae dancehall giant Kojo Kombolo, the Chief Executive Officer of Judah Promotions has said that the reggae dancehall music in vogue in Ghana now was what was done in 1992 in Jamaica. He said this during his interview on Pluzz FM’s morning show "AM Pluzz". “When you listen to the youth of today, you could realize that they started listening to dancehall music during Vybz Kar-

tel days but we started enjoying the genre during Supper Cat days so we know what dancehall is about and that is the ragamuffin,” he said. “The fact is that the industry itself has no knowledge about reggae dancehall because way back when we started putting up shows to encourage the youth to come out with the positive potentials within them, the industry wasn’t paying attention to them but when they realized that the food is ready, they all

Kombolo also advised reggae and dancehall artistes to use their lyrics to educate the people. “An artiste is just like a mirror reflecting to the people what is happening within the system so as an artiste you have to read and research and educate the masses because our governments are just rulers but not leaders,” he further stated. Currently Kojo Kombolo is out of the country ready to tour Switzerland, Jamaica, Austria and France.

are programmed to look at each other because it really does come down to the way people are portrayed in the media that carries on into our perceptions in real life,'' Miguel said. It's disgusting, it really is disgusting,'' he added of Trump's comments

NEW YORK _ “Too proper for the black kids, too black for the Mexicans,'' Miguel sings on the song, “what's normal anyway.'' The R&B star, who is black and Mexican, explores his racial identity and more on the track, which he calls “the spine'' of his new album, “Wildheart.'' “It was a challenge for people to understand. It was always a question of, 'What are you? Where do you come from?''' the 29-year-old Los Angeleno said. “And I guess it kind of rubs off on you ... and you wonder, 'Who do I identify with more?' The opening line is kind of like the beginning _ it was part of my personal journey.'' The song features the refrain “I never feel like I belong,'' and the sound

marks a departure for the singer, whose No. 1 R&B hits include “Sure Thing,'' ''Lotus Flower Bomb” and the Grammy-winning ''Adorn,” which helped Miguel cross over to pop. He says race is an issue America needs to tackle quickly, especially in the wake of Donald Trump's comments about some Mexican immigrants being rapists, criminals and drug dealers. Trump's statements led numerous businesses to cut ties with him, including Macy's, and cost the Miss USA pageant, which Trump partially owns, its telecasts on NBC and Univision. “Hopefully we're ready as a culture to face it head on and not put a Band-Aid on it in some ways and pacify it in some ways. It's a real pivotal time and there's a way to hopefully start affecting the way we

Wildheart,'' which debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's 200 albums and R&B/HipHop albums charts last week, ditches his radio-ready sound for a more artistic approach. He calls the album “a lot more aggressive.'' “It has so much to do with the energy and pace and perspective I have on the world now. I think being a little more sturdy as a human being, I guess I'm more sure of myself, and I think that confidence affords or informs a certain decisiveness,'' he said. Miguel says he didn't want to completely alienate his radio fans with his changing sound, so he released the groovy ``Coffee'' as the album's first single. “It was kind of the perfect wedge to crack open the door as we move forward,'' he said. “I'd be lying if I said I didn't want my songs to go No. 1 pop. I think any artist who pretends

they don't want that is in denial. ... I want to reach more people, but I want to do it my way.'' The album features collaborations with Lenny Kravitz and Kurupt, and the song “leaves'' samples the Smashing Pumpkins' “1979.'' “Kind of after we finished the song, it was like, 'You know what, this is reminiscent of this song,' so we made sure that they heard it and made sure that it was all good,'' Miguel said of the sample, and of avoiding a situation like the “Blurred Lines'' case in which Robin Thicke and Pharrell had to pay nearly $7.4 million to Marvin Gaye's children after a judge said their song borrowed from a past song from the R&B icon. “We're all standing on the shoulders of giants. There's nothing that hasn't been done ... there's going to be moments where you do things that are reminiscent of other things. And even if you're not aware of them, I think it's just best out of respect to reach out,'' he added. Miguel will launch a North American tour later this month. He has written songs for Beyonce, John Legend and Usher, and he says he wants to continue to collaborate in that way. “I have a goal of writing a hit song for at least one artist a year now. It's genuinely a goal of mine,'' he said. By Mesfin Fekadu THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ___ Online: http://wildheart.officialmiguel.com/

50 CENT FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY

MAN WHO THREW BANANA PEEL AT DAVE CHAPPELLE APPEARS IN COURT

WOMEN WHO TESTIFIED AGAINST BILL COSBY SEEK TRANSCRIPT RELEASE

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Rapper-actor 50 Cent wants bankruptcy protection. The move comes just days after a jury ordered him to pay five-million dollars in an invasion-of-privacy lawsuit. The U-S Bankruptcy Court filing in Connecticut lists both his assets and liabilities as between 10-million and 50-million. Last Friday, a jury in New York ordered 50 Cent to pay five-million to a woman for inserting himself as a crude commentator on her sex tape and posting it online. 50 Cent's screen credits include the Starz network series “Power'' and the upcoming boxing movie “Southpaw.''

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) _ Dave Chappelle should testify. That's according to the lawyer for the man accused of throwing a banana peel at the black comedian. Attorney Rod Thompson, who is African American, says his client Christian Englander isn't a racist. Englander, who is white, is charged with disturbing the peace and battery. The lawyer tells The Santa Fe New Mexican that Chappelle should have to testify in the case or the charges should be dropped. Englander says he meant the banana peel stunt as an act of social commentary during Chapelle's performance in March. There was status hearing in the case yesterday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Two of Bill Cosby's accusers have joined a court bid to have his testimony unsealed. Beth Ferrier and Rebecca Neal say excerpts released last week mention them but don't paint the whole picture. Cosby gave the testimony under oath in a 2005 sexual-battery lawsuit. Lawyer Gloria Allred says they want to challenge defence comments that Cosby's accusers have been “discredited.'' The women's lawyers filed the papers in Philadelphia, where they were “Jane Does'' supporting a former Temple University employee who said Cosby had drugged and molested her.

Laurence Fishburne to play writer Alex Haley in 'Roots' miniseries remake

LOS ANGELES _ Laurence Fishburne is joining the “Roots'' miniseries remake. A&E Networks said Wednesday that Fishburne will play writer Alex Haley, whose novel about his African-American ancestry was the basis of the original TV miniseries. The new project will draw on the late Haley's novel, “Roots: The Saga of an American Family,'' along with new research, A&E said. The 1977 ABC miniseries was a ratings sensation. Fishburne is a Tony Award-winning stage actor (“Two Trains Running'') and Oscar nominee (“What's Love Got to Do With It''). He's become a familiar presence on TV in series including “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,'' ''Hannibal” and ABC's comedy ''black-ish.” No air date or other casting has been announced for the “Roots'' remake that will debut simultaneously on the History, A&E and Lifetime channels. Mario Balotelli's future at Liverpool in question after getting dropped for preseason tour

LIVERPOOL, England _ Mario Balotelli has been left out of Liverpool's 30-man squad for its preseason tour of Thailand, Australia and Malaysia, raising doubts about the Italian's future at Anfield. The striker had a disappointing first season at Liverpool following his move from AC Milan, scoring one goal in 16 appearances in the Premier League. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has signed two forwards this off-season, Danny Ings and Roberto Firmino. Balotelli will continue his preseason preparations in England, while Fabio Borini and Jose Enrique have also been overlooked.

LONDON _ Serena Williams has widened her lead at No. 1 in the WTA rankings with her fourth consecutive Grand Slam title at Wimbledon while Canada's Eugenie Bouchard tumbled 14 spots after a first-round exit at the All England Club.Williams now holds more than twice as many points as No. 2 Maria Sharapova.

Raheem Sterling was included in Liverpool's squad, named on Saturday, having failed to report for training Wednesday and Thursday _ citing illness _ before turning up on Friday. The England winger has reportedly been the subject of two failed bids from Manchester City this off-season.

Liverpool reaches deal with Man City for Raheem Sterling

Manchester City is close to making Raheem Sterling the most expensive English soccer player. A person familiar with the situation said Sunday that Liverpool has reached an agreement with City over the transfer of the England winger for 49 million pounds ($76 million). The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss details of a deal that is yet to be completed. City has had two previous bids for the 20-year-old Sterling turned down this off-season. Sterling, who has a contract with Liverpool until 2017, said in an unsanctioned interview with the BBC during last season he had rejected a new deal worth 100,000 pounds a week ($155,000). Around the same time he was pictured on the

front-page of British newspapers apparently smoking a shisha pipe and inhaling nitrous oxide _ a legal substance commonly known as laughing gas. Sterling, a skilful and quick attacker who joined Liverpool from Queens Park Rangers' academy in 2010, is one of English soccer's top young players and an established member of the national team after making his international debut in 2012. He has scored one goal in 16 England appearances. For Liverpool, he has scored 23 goals in 129 appearances. Sterling still has to agree to personal terms and pass a medical examination with City. Andy Carroll is currently the most expensive English soccer player following his move to Liverpool from Newcastle for 35 million pounds (then $56 million) in 2011.
