PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad _ Trinidad and Tobago is preparing to dissolve Parliament after setting a date for the general election. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Friday that elections will be held on Sept. 7. She expects to dissolve Parliament Wednesday. Opinion polls suggest it will be a tight race between the ruling five-party coalition People’s Partnership and the opposition People’s National Movement. The ruling party won 29 of 41 Parliament seats in May 2010. It has faced numerous corruption allegations as well as criticism for once appointing former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner as national security minister. Warner has founded another party and faces U.S. federal corruption charges as part of an ongoing FIFA investigation. Trinidad and Tobago is one of the region’s most prosperous nations thanks to natural gas and oil reserves. . The Associated Press
Haiti electoral council releases final list of presidential candidates
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic _ Legislators on Friday approved a constitutional reform that will allow Dominican presidents to hold office for two consecutive terms. The measure was approved 18139 despite heavy public opposition. Legislators had created a special assembly that voted twice in favour of the measure, which also bars a two-term president from running for vice-president in the future. At least one legislator claimed he and others were offered some $350,000 to vote in favour of the project. Legislator Victor Gomez with the
Opposition leaders and ruling party officials who opposed the measure previously reached a deal in which they were guaranteed certain positions and nominations in exchange for their support. More than 60 legislators of the ruling party who supported a potential run by former president Leonel Fernandez initially opposed the bill. Both Fernandez and Medina belong to the same party, and recent polls suggest Medina would have a better chance at winning the 2016 elections.
A Canadian travel company has signed a deal with the government of Antigua to build a $400 million all-inclusive resort project on the eastern Caribbean island. Sunwing Travel Group says the 500-room hotel is slated to open in 2017 and will create 2,000 new jobs. Officials say construction of The Royalton Antigua Resort & Spa will begin this summer at Deep Bay. The company also plans to build 200 condominium units and establish new flights to Antigua with its subsidiary Sunwing Airlines. The Associated Press

Police accuse the man of trying to disarm the officer, while eye witnesses claim he was running away when he was shot.
Officials released the list of 58 names on Friday after rejecting 13 candidates. Excluded from the list is former Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe. A judicial panel previously ruled that he failed to receive a government document certifying that he handled public funds appropriately while prime minister from 2012 until late 2014. Haiti is expected to hold local elections in August followed by the first round of presidential elections in October and a final round in December.

The board of directors for World Changers Church International and Creflo Dollar ministries said in a statement Wednesday the Gulfstream G650 Dollar wants is necessary to continue international ministry and aid work. The jet is valued at more than $65 million.

Officials said the man is in serious condition after being shot in the face on Tuesday. The shoot-
Immigration Minister Fred Mitchell declined to comment on the case but said Wednesday that his department was investigating. The Bahamas has stepped up maritime patrols and imposed new restrictions on work permits to crack down on illegal immigration.
The board says an initial appeal for donations didn’t adequately communicate that Dollar was looking for donations from like-minded people, not the public at large. The board says a revamped video will be released soon. Dollar is a prominent African-American preacher based near Atlanta who has built successful ministries on the prosperity gospel. Warner, a former FIFA vice and member of Parliament in his homeland, said Wednesday that he intends to resist extradition at a hearing scheduled for July 9. He faces charges that include racketeering and money-laundering. Authorities earlier confiscated his passport, fearing he might flee.
He is accused of taking payments totalling $10 million sent by a high-ranking FIFA official to give South Africa the right to host the 2010 World Cup over Morocco. Warner left FIFA in 2011 and has denied wrongdoing.

ROAD TOWN, British Virgin Islands _ The ruling party of the British Virgin Islands has won the general election in one of the world's top offshore trust jurisdictions, according to preliminary results released Tuesday. Officials said the National Democratic Party secured at least seven of 13 parliament seats, including two districts previously held by the opposition Virgin Islands Party.
It is unclear whether Julian Fraser will continue as chairman of the Virgin Islands Party since its constitution dictates that elections must be held for a new chairman if it doesn't win an election. Fraser could not be reached for comment, and Malone declined to comment. The Virgin Islands Party struggled at the polls in part because several of its candidates faced legal problems, including one who is standing trial on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Usain Bolt calls performance in 200 metres at Adidas Grand Prix worst of his career
NEW YORK _ Usain Bolt called his performance in the 200 metres Saturday the worst of his career after he posted an uncharacteristically slow time in winning the race at the Adidas Grand Prix. The last time he ran at this meet, Bolt set his first world record seven years ago with a stunning victory in the 100. But on Saturday, the six-time Olympic gold medallist was surprised and disappointed at how poorly he ran the curve and expressed frustration that his training hasn't been translating to strong showings in competitions. Bolt had wanted to break 20 seconds for the first time this season, but he finished in 20.29 seconds Saturday. His world record is 19.19. Bolt was still hopeful he can figure things out in time for August's world championships as he has in the past. The Associated Press (AP Photo/Bryan R, Smith)
Canadian Andre De Grasse wins in 100 and 200 metre races at NCAA championships
NBA star Carmelo Anthony establishes new professional soccer team to his Puerto Rico home NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson, who was in Puerto Rico for the announcement, told The Associated Press that officials are interviewing potential coaches and technical directors as well as scouting for new players. The club “will start taking a look at players not only from this region, but around the world,'' he said in a phone interview.
EUGENE, Ore. _ Canadian sprint phenom Andre De Grasse continues to tear up the track, winning both the 100 and 200 metres Friday at the NCAA track and field championships. The 20-year-old from Markham, Ont., a junior at the University of Southern California, ran a blistering 9.75 in the 100 metres, then followed it up with a fast 19.58 in the 200 metres. Both times were wind-aided, so don’t count for official rankings or records. The wind in the 100 metres was 2.7 _ just over the legal limit of 2.00. The wind for the 200 was 2.4. Donovan Bailey and Bruny Surin share the Canadian record in the 100 at 9.84. DeGrasse already holds the national 200 record of 20.03, set on May 16. De Grasse didn’t take up track until he was spotted at a meet in Toronto by coach Tony Sharpe. He ran for Coffeyville Community College in Kansas before transferring to USC.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico _ NBA star Carmelo Anthony announced last Thursday that he is bringing a professional soccer team to Puerto Rico for the first time in three years. The new club, called Puerto Rico FC, will begin playing in the Division II North American Soccer League in fall 2016. “It is an honour for me to bring back soccer to Puerto Rico, my beloved island, birthplace of my father,'' Anthony, who plays for the New York Knicks, said at a news conference in the U.S. territory. “To the thousands of fans in Puerto Rico that have been waiting for soccer to come back, I can promise a world-class organization in a world-class league.'' Puerto Rico FC is the NASL's 13th club and will play home games at the 12,500-seat Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon. Details of the financial deal were not disclosed.

Gibson, a recording artist, is also known for his acting in “Fast and Furious'' and “Transformers.''
