The Caribbean Guyana awaits help from Cuban experts to revive sugar industry

NEWS UN: Fewer hungry people around the world despite wars, poverty; majority reach UN goal

The World Bangladesh bans radical Islamist group accused of killing atheist bloggers, writers

``The near-achievement of the MDG hunger targets shows us that we can indeed eliminate the scourge of hunger in our lifetime,'' said U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization's chief, Jose Graziano da Silva.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana _ Guyana’s prime minister says Cuba has pledged to help revive the South American country’s sluggish sugar industry. Moses Nagamootoo says Cuba will send a group of experts to advise the government on how to rebuild its sugar sector. He made the announcement after meeting Tuesday with Cuba’s vice-president in Guyana. No further details were provided. Guyana is the largest sugar-producing country in the Caribbean Community trade bloc, but it has seen a steady drop in production. The government also says it has run out of money to pay the salaries of workers at the state-owned Guyana Sugar Corporation. Cuba has struggled to revive its own sugar industry, though output has recovered somewhat since 2010’s 1.1 million tons, the lowest in a century. It once regularly produced 6 million tons. ROME _ The number of hungry people around the world has dropped to 795 million from over a billion a quarter-century ago despite natural disasters, ongoing conflicts and poverty, the three U.N. food agencies said Wednesday. Countries in East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean showed the most progress in reducing hunger, thanks in part to economic growth that didn't exclude the poor, investments in agriculture and political stability, the agencies said in their annual State of Food Insecurity report. The report found that a majority of the countries monitored _ 72 out of 129 _ have met the U.N.'s ambitious Millennium Development Goals to halve undernourishment by 2015.

The agencies said the reduction in hunger and undernourishment came despite natural disasters, political instability and conflict in much of the developing world _ even though the world's population had grown by 1.9 billion people since 1990. The agencies said improved agricultural productivity, especially by family and small-scale farmers, and better social protection measures like food vouchers or school meal programs had had the most impact in reducing hunger. Sub-Saharan Africa still had the highest levels of undernourishment in the world: Almost one in four people there don't get enough food to live an active and healthy life. Some West African countries that did invest in agricultural productivity and infrastructure managed to meet the U.N. hunger targets, the report found. The Associated Press

TDHAKA, Bangladesh _ Bangladesh has banned a radical Islamist group accused of attacking and killing atheist bloggers and writers. The Ministry of Home Affairs said Monday that the Ansarullah Bangla Team was banned in response to a request by police because it has threatened and killed bloggers, writers and other activists. Junior Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said the decision was made under the anti-terrorism law. A police report said the group follows al-Qaida and has been active in Muslim-majority Bangladesh since 2008. Since February, three atheist bloggers who criticized radical Islam have been killed, including an American citizen of Bangladesh origin. The group has recruited students from leading colleges and universities.

HAVANA _ Ten young female crocodiles born in Sweden are to be released in their parents’ former swampy home in Cuba after being returned to the Caribbean island. The Skansen Zoo in Stockholm sent the reptiles to Cuba’s National Zoo in April to help encourage reproduction of the protected species native to the island. Hiram Fernandez, a veterinarian at the Cuban zoo, says the reptiles will be released soon in Zapata Swamp, about 200 kilometres (125 miles) southeast of the capital. Their ranks have been thinned by hunting and diminishing habitat, with few examples of Crocodylus rhombifer still found in Zapata Swamp and Cuba’s Isle of Youth. Fidel Castro in the 1980s gave the crocodiles’ parents, named Castro and Hilly, to Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Shatalov, who initially took them to Moscow. The Associated Press

GEORGETOWN, Guyana _ A retired army general is poised to become Guyana’s new president after a multi-ethnic opposition coalition defeated a party that has been in power for nearly 25 years. Preliminary results released Thursday show that 69-year-old David Arthur Granger and his Partnership for National Unity-Alliance for Change Coalition obtained nearly 207,000 votes in Monday’s general elections. The governing People’s Progressive Party obtained nearly 201,500 votes. The coalition is expected to have a three- or four-seat majority in the 65-member Parliament of the South American country. President Donald Ramotar’s party had asked for a partial recount of ballots. It has been in power since 1992 and was seeking a sixth consecutive term. The Associated Press

Legal battle over Martin Luther King Jr. Bible, Nobel prize headed for court ordered mediation asking a judge to order Bernice to surrender them. Speaking from the pulpit of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where her father and grandfather preached, Bernice in February 2014 denounced her brothers' intentions, saying the Bible and peace prize medal were among their father's most cherished possessions and shouldn't be sold. ATLANTA _ A legal battle over civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s travelling Bible and 1964 Nobel Peace Prize is headed for court-ordered mediation, and lawyers for both sides said Wednesday they hope for a lasting resolution to issues that have long divided King's heirs. The three surviving King children _ Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King and the Rev. Bernice King _ are the sole shareholders and directors of the Martin Luther King Jr. Estate Inc. In January 2014, Martin and Dexter voted 2-1 against Bernice to sell their father's peace prize medal and travelling Bible to an unnamed private buyer.

The estate's lawyers had cited a 1995 agreement among King's heirs to sign over their rights to many items they inherited from their father to the estate. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968. His widow, Coretta Scott King, died in 2006. Yolanda King, the Kings' eldest child, died in 2007. The case was set to go to trial in February, but Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney temporarily halted all action in the case at the parties' request to allow them time to settle. He ordered them to appear before him in late March if they hadn't reached an agreement by then, and he later extended that deadline to Wednesday.

been involved in “intense settlement discussions'' on issues involving King's legacy, estate and related for-profit and non-profit entities. Barnum said they have made substantial progress and have even exchanged draft settlement agreements. But he asked for court-ordered mediation to get them to a final resolution in this case and also on broader issues. Nicole Jennings Wade, a lawyer for the King estate, said her client does not oppose mediation. McBurney said he plans to issue an order early next week outlining the mediation terms, including who must be present at any talks. He wants the parties to agree on a mediator or to submit names from which he can choose by June 30 and for mediation to be complete by Sept. 30, he said. PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad _ Former international soccer official Jack Warner on Wednesday denied the latest corruptions allegations against him. Warner, who represented his native Trinidad and Tobago for FIFA and is now a member of Parliament in the twin island nation, denied any wrongdoing, reaffirming previous denials when confronted with allegations of corruption during his tenure as a vice-president of FIFA and president of CONCACAF, the North American regional body of the federation. Warner was one of 14 people indicted in the U.S. on corruption charges stemming from an investigation of CONCACAF. Two of his sons have pleaded guilty to related charges. He said he has not been questioned in the probe.

“I have been afforded no due process and I have not even been questioned in this matter,'' he said in a statement. “I reiterate that I am innocent of any charges. I have walked away from the politics of world football to immerse myself in the improvement of lives in this country where I shall, God willing, die.'' In a brief phone conversation with The Associated Press, Warner declined to comment further and said he did not have enough information about the guilty pleas of his sons to comment. “I can't say anything about what I don't know about.'' Warner represents the constituency of Chaguanas West in Parliament. His term is due to expire when the session ends June 17. He can be extradited to the United States under a bilateral treaty. Later, he told TV6 that U.S. authorities “know where to find me'' and added “I sleep very soundly in the night.''

New Bob Marley musical at Center Stage tries to help heal an uneasy Baltimore this spring

June 4th - June 17th, 2015

Dolli Difference Releases raunchy Music Video raunchy in the lyrical department it didnt not show the sexy side of her she wanted to show so this week she release a video for "Lingerie".In the some what controversial video she is dressed in several nightwear and even appears to be topless in one scene but thanks to special lens flare effects nothing is shown.

Kwei-Armah played Marley's song “Burnin' and Lootin''' on his way into work on the night of the first curfew. The song's lyrics were prescient: This morning I woke up in a curfew/Oh God, I was a prisoner, too/ Could not recognize the faces standing over me/ They were all dressed in uniforms of brutality.”

NEW YORK _ Most theatre professionals like to say that whatever they're working on is very relevant to what's going on in the real world. That was not possibly more true than in Baltimore this spring. The city's flagship theatre, Center Stage, debuted a musical about reggae icon and civil rights activist Bob Marley during the city's spasm of violence and peaceful protests following the death of Freddie Gray in police custody. Several preview performances for the musical “Marley'' were lost amid protests marching near the theatre and the actors had to rush to finish rehearsals early on several evenings to accommodate a city-wide curfew. There were soldiers, horses and armoured vehicles in the streets and helicopters in the air as the cast and crew tried to finish a work that highlighted the life of a singer who demanded social justice and freedom for black people. A new framing scene was added to the play in which two black men watch footage of the Baltimore protests on a

smartphone, making the connection between the two movements clear. On May 2, the cast went out into the streets to give a free concert, including singing “One Heart'' to try to heal the city. “When real life is happening around you and you're trying to produce art, you have to submit to real life and have faith,'' said Kwame Kwei-Armah, Center Stage's artistic director who also wrote and directed the Marley musical. “I'm not sure in my life that I'll ever feel that connected or ever feel that blessed or ever feel that visceral call that theatre is about the here and now.'' The musical focuses on the years 1975 to 1978, when Marley survived an attempted assassination in Jamaica and went into exile in London. It's the first time a stage musical has used both Marley's songs and his life story. The musical features mid-'70s Marley albums as “Exodus,'' ''Kaya,” and ''Rastaman Vibration,” which include the songs ''Jamming,” ''Three Little Birds” and ''Roots, Rock, Reggae.” Mitchell Brunings portrays the title character.

“Somebody wrote these lyrics 30 years ago, somebody tapped into something 30, 40 years ago and it's more applicable than some of the work I've done throughout all of my life,'' said Kwei-Armah. “It's humbling and beautiful. It validates for me why I'm doing theatre.'' Suzette Newman, an executive producer of “Marley,'' said she is working to get the musical on the road after it ends its run in Baltimore on June 14. ”We absolutely hope that it will travel and go elsewhere. We're in the process of those discussions right now,'' she said. Until then, she and Kwei-Armah watch nightly as the audience goes from punching the air with “Get Up, Stand Up'' to joining the actors onstage in the show's emotional climax with “One Love.'' “The power of Bob hits me afresh nearly every night. Suzette and I are standing at the back, seeing the audience as they respond and run onto the stage to sing with the cast 'One Love' in a city that needs to be one and healed,'' said Kwei-Armah. TRACY MORGAN SETTLES WITH WAL-MART OVER HIGHWAY WRECK

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Tracy Morgan has settled his lawsuit against Wal-Mart. He sued the discount retail chain over a highway crash that killed his friend -- and left him and two friends badly injured. Word of the settlement comes in a filing in federal court in Newark, New Jersey. Wal-Mart calls it an “amicable'' resolution. Back in January, Wal-Mart settled with the family of comedian James McNair, who died in the wreck almost a year ago. Meanwhile, the truck driver faces several criminal charges in New Jersey. He has pleaded not guilty. The driver wasn't a party to Morgan's federal lawsuit.

entertainment SNOOP DOGG: PLAYING THE “GAME''

LONDON (AP) -- Snoop Dogg is looking to get into the game -- “Game of Thrones,'' that is. The rapper is a big fan of the wildly popular H-B-O show. So big, he says he wants to go from watching it to being in it. Snoop says he doesn't know what role he'd like to play -- but hopes producers will come up with a part that would fit his personality. He has helped the show behind the scenes, doing some music on a mixtape to promote the new season.

The Rock faces off against the Big One in ‘San Andreas’

David Oyelowo creates a tortured soul in HBO's 'Nightingale'

LOS ANGELES _ Dwayne Johnson has played his share of outsized heroes over the years. His characters have taken down crazed criminals and evil empires. He’s crushed an army of fire ants with his chin. He’s even flexed his way out of a plaster cast. But not even “The Rock’’ can beat an earthquake

LOS ANGELES _ HBO's “Nightingale'' is a small film with an indelibly big performance by David Oyelowo, who plays an emotionally damaged man losing himself further after a spasm of off-camera violence. The demands of the one-character drama gave him pause, the British actor said. But he doesn't shy away from a challenge, as he proved by his performance as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma,'' a widely acclaimed turn despite being overlooked by the Academy Awards this year.

Usain Bolt getting back into shape ahead of worlds in Beijing, runs 200 at the Golden Spike

Usain Bolt wins 200 in 20.13 in cold at the Golden Spike in 1st race in Europe ahead of worlds

Ex FIFA vice president Warner arrested in Trinidad, freed on $2.5M bail in US corruption case

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic _ Usain Bolt says he is not worried by Justin Gatlin's fast times and is using this season to get into shape ahead of the world championship in Beijing after his injuries last season.

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic _ Usain Bolt won the 200 metres race at the Golden Spike meet on Tuesday, as the Jamaican star prepares for the world championships after a season marred by injuries.

The Jamaican great was talking on Sunday in the eastern Czech city of Ostrava two days before he runs the 200 metres at the Golden Spike meet there.

Facing rain and cold at the IAAF World Challenge event, Bolt came out of the bend slightly ahead and breezed unchallenged to victory, crossing the finish line in 20.13.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad _ Former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner turned himself in to Trinidad police shortly after they issued an arrest warrant at the request of U.S. authorities. He has been released on $2.5 million bail.

The six-time Olympic champion says his focus this season is “on trying to get back into shape, get a lot of races on my belt before the world championship.''

The six-time Olympic champion improved on his previous season's best of 20.20, clocked in April in Jamaica.

Tuesday's event will be his second 200 after clocking 20.20 in Jamaica in April.

It was his first race in Europe this season as he gets into shape for the worlds in August in Beijing.

Bolt say he is feeling better than a month ago and his coach expects an unspecified fast time in Ostrava.

Isiah Young of the United States finished second in 20.35 and Lykourgos Stefanos Tsakonas of Greece was third in 20.62.

Bailey wants Pan Am sprinters to feed off home support

Warner was forced out of FIFA in 2011 over a bribery scandal.

TORONTO - Former Olympic 100-metre champion Donovan Bailey knows just how important the support of the home crowd can be at a big event. He used it to his advantage in one of the more infamous races in sprinting history. Bailey, on hand Thursday for a Pan Am Games podium unveiling at Nathan Phillips Square, recalled his 1997 showdown with American Michael Johnson in a rare 150-metre race just down the road at the then-SkyDome.

Warner arrived at a police station in the capital of Port-of-Spain with at least one lawyer Wednesday. He did not enter a plea and is scheduled to appear in court again July 12. He is one of 14 people indicted in the U.S. on corruption charges involving international soccer's governing body FIFA.

Tracee Ellis Ross on the TV show 'black ish,' 'Diddy,' her famous mom and her natural hair ranting and raving about how long everything was taking. Ross: And did you hear what I said? Oh my god! (Laughs.) Everybody stopped. Because it was sort of like, 'Is he serious? Is he not serious? I'm not really sure.' And everybody stopped and he was like, 'I'm just sick of this. I'm the guest star! Did she know I was waiting?' And I busted through the door and I said, 'Well, they told me you were waiting, (so) I took longer.' AP: And what about Mary J.? LOS ANGELES _ On an unusually sweltering late-winter afternoon in a historic downtown nightclub, actress Tracee Ellis Ross and the cast of her sitcom “blackish'' have done some time travelling. For the series' season-one finale, airing Wednesday on ABC, the show's Johnson family has been transported from today's suburbs to late-1920s Harlem to tell the story of how Pops' ( Laurence Fishburne) greatgreat grandfather (portrayed by the modern-day dad Anthony Anderson) bet the family's future against a ruthless gangster (guest star Sean “Diddy'' Combs).

The entire “black-ish'' cast and crew were under incredible pressure, shooting at breakneck pace at a site out of the comfort zone of the “black-ish'' sets on the Disney lot in Burbank. To make things even harder, this was a lavish period piece featuring two busy guest actors with extremely limited time (Mary J. Blige also appears). The Associated Press caught up with Ross to ask about dancing while Blige sang, her famous mom and her awesome hair. AP: During one of the breaks in filming, Sean started to joke around, spoofing his own diva persona by

Ross: The highlight for me was dancing on the moon behind Mary J. Blige. She was lip-syncing, obviously, because she was singing to track, because that's what one has to do. But she was singing, as well. And not everyone got to hear her, but I did, from a very close proximity, sitting on the moon behind her, doing my weird arm dancing. AP: The show 'blackish' is the first major broadcast-network sitcom to focus solely on a black family in recent memory. And while your show is attracting a diverse audience, you have said the characters' skin colour is significant.

Ross: What I firmly believe is that this is not a story about a family that happens to be black. This is a story about a family that is black dealing with life. It's not about them being black, but they are black. And it's actually one of the things that I love about the show, because ... it's not about letting go of who you are, but, instead, owning your truth unapologetically. AP: It has introduced you to millions of viewers, though you are no newcomer, having done a ton of things, including eight seasons of the sitcom 'Girlfriends.' And yet, when we Google you, the first search results are pages and pages of articles about your natural hair. Ross: I think the reason is that it is about bigger issues. It's about expanding this idea in our culture where we get to be all unapologetically ourselves. And in the world of television and in the world of images and in the world of entertainment, there have been limited stories that get to be told. ... So, although it is just a hair conversation, underneath it, in essence, is me saying, 'This is who I am.' By the way, underneath the hundreds (of

Google-search pages) about my hair, are hundreds about my mom. (Laughs.) AP: After all these years, “black-ish'' does seem to be the project that pulls you out of the shadow of your famous mom. (Her mother is Motown legend Diana Ross and her father is music-business manager Robert Ellis Silberstein.) Ross: I don't know how aware of it I am. ... I think that because of who my mom is as a person and as a mom, I've never consciously been trying to get out of my mom's shadow. I've been consciously trying to discover who I am and make a mark on the world, so that I feel like my life is worth something. ___ Online: http://abc.go.com/ shows/blackish ___ Follow AP Entertainment Writer Mike Cidoni Lennox at www. twitter.com/CidoniLennox By Mike Cidoni Lennox THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

to a financial coach. What would our lives be like today, if ten years ago we were taught the rules of money, given a plan to succeed and had a coach on our side? Let's copy a great monkey.

This is Heather Augustyn’s fourth book and she spent two years researching it. It features dozens of interviews with a number of key individuals, including Millie Small, Enid Cumberland of Keith & Enid, Janet Enright, Jamaica’s first female guitarist who performed jazz in the 1950s, Marcia Griffiths and members of the first all-girl ska band, the Carnations.

Our focus of community development can only be accomplished by assisting each of our citizens to grow individually. Financial Freedom is a privilege and not only for the priveleged. There are hundreds of books written about Bob Marley, reggae and dancehall, but none have been all about the women. Now all that has changed thanks to Heather Augustyn, a correspondent for The Times of Northwest Indiana, U.S., and an adjunct professor at Purdue University’s North Central campus as well as the author of Don Drummond: The Genius and Tragedy of the World’s Greatest Trombonist, Ska: An Oral History and Ska: The

Rhythm of Liberation. Songbirds: Pioneering Women in Jamaican Music is the first the first book about women ni reggae, many of whom are critical to the ska explosion in the 60s or the global rise of roots reggae in the 70s. The book is a detailed look at the daughters, wives and mothers in reggae; the vocalists, instrumentalists, producers, dancers and deejays who helped to shape

Songbirds: Pioneering Women in Jamaican Music is the story about women in reggae, women that has often been harassed and received little or no pay to perform as backup singers or alongside or in front of the male musicians. It’s also the story about women who found a way to share their talent in a culture and industry that is often marked by masculinity and along the way they changed the course of music all over the world.
