Authorities say the scam bilked mostly elderly and vulnerable citizens out of their savings. KINGSTON, Jamaica _ A U.S. Navy hospital ship is bringing state-of-the-art medical care to Jamaica as part of this year’s goodwill mission in the Caribbean and Latin America. Staff on the USNS Comfort set up two outreach sites in the capital of Kingston where they started providing free medical and dental care to Jamaicans on Wednesday. Some patients will also be seen on board the converted oil tanker with operating rooms, a blood bank, and an intensive care unit. The hospital ship will anchor in southern Jamaica until May 14. Before arriving in Jamaica, Comfort personnel provided free services in Guatemala and Belize. It is scheduled to visit several other countries including Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Honduras. Officials expect that some 130,000 patients will be seen across the region this year. The Associated Press
BISMARCK, N.D. _ A federal jury in North Dakota is deciding the fate of a man accused in a Jamaican lottery scam that authorities say cost victims around the country millions of dollars. FORT-DE-FRANCE, Martinique _ French President Francois Hollande is gathering with Caribbean leaders to talk about climate change and its impact on the tourism-dependent region.
Hollande arrived late Friday in Martinique as part of a five-day tour through the French Caribbean before heading to Cuba and Haiti. He previously visited St. Barts and St. Martin and is scheduled to meet with officials Sunday in Guadeloupe.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Clare Hochhalter told jurors that investigators reviewed more than 500,000 documents, including 50,000 emails from Williams.

The legislation would allow President Danilo Medina to run for re-election next year. It would amend the Constitution adopted in 2010 under his predecessor, Leonel Fernandez, who was expected to run for a fourth term in 2016. Both men are from the Partido de la Liberacion Dominicana. The ruling party began pushing the proposal after polls showed the incumbent had a better chance of winning in 2016. It needs a two-thirds vote in the Senate and Chamber of Deputies to pass. A vote has not yet been scheduled.
FISTANBUL _ Turkish officials are confirming that their country has forged an alliance with Saudi Arabia to help rebels fighting the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad. The pact, which provides rebels logistical and financial support, is a concern for a U.S. administration wary of empowering radical Islamist groups in Syria. Turkey and Saudi Arabia have been at odds over how to deal with Assad, their common enemy. But mutual frustration with what they consider American indecision has brought the two together in a strategic alliance that is driving recent rebel gains in northern Syria, Turkish officials say. The Obama administration worries that the revived rebel alliance could potentially put a more dangerous radical Islamist regime in Assad’s place, just as the U.S. is focused on bring down the Islamic State group.

South Africa: Separate protests block tourist spot near Mandela’s old home, disrupt Cape Town
JOHANNESBURG _ Protesters in South Africa have blocked off the road leading to the Soweto home of the late Nelson Mandela, in a demonstration against electricity bills. Police said residents on Wednesday burned tires and piled rocks across the streets of a Soweto neighbourhood, once home to Mandela and Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu, and now a popular tourist spot in Johannesburg. Residents’ representative Faith Vanqa said they were protesting the power utility’s billing system change from a monthly reading to a prepaid meter. In Cape Town, hundreds of striking municipal workers trashed the city’s streets. read, “Black Lives Matter,'' a slogan many have taken up in the fight. The Gray case is the latest in a string of high-profile killings of black men by police that include Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City, neither of which resulted in charges against the lawmen.
BALTIMORE _ Thousands of people looked on as speakers praised the city's young top prosecutor for quickly moving forward with charges against the police officers they see as responsible for the death of a 25-year-old black man who suffered a fatal spinal injury in their custody.
live around the world. She announced criminal charges against the officers ranging from assault to murder in the death of Freddie Gray, whose name has become a rallying point against police brutality and socio-economic inequality in American cities.
The peaceful scene Saturday on a grassy plaza across from Baltimore's City Hall was a striking contrast to demonstrations the past two weeks at the same plaza. Crowds of angry protesters demanded that the city's leaders heed their cries for justice, and one night, the protests gave way to looting, rioting and arson.
Organizers billed the big Saturday afternoon demonstration not as a protest of Gray's death, but a “victory rally'' that city leaders have perhaps listened to their cries. Smaller groups of what looked to be several hundred gathered all around the city and made their way through the streets to join the thousands at the main rally.
On Friday morning, four days after the most violent civil unrest since the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King in 1968, State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby had stood nearby before a bank of television cameras beaming her words

The artiste, born Ryan Douglas, says the feedback has been overwhelming not only in Jamaica, but in overseas markets as well.
There are also plans for a tour over the next few months. The 25-year-old began his musical journey while a teenager at Denbigh High School in May Pen. He developed this desire by entering various major competitions locally, such as the popular Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall, and many clashes. From this experience, he learned to appreciate the art of performing and also the true meaning of good competition.
"The feedback on the song has been great both locally and internationally. Trinidad was the inspiration for the song because of their soca vibes," said Gage. To increase the promotion of the song, a music video is being planned. "We are getting ready to shoot a few videos, including Tun Up, Let Me Be and Still A Love It. AUSTIN, Texas _ Texas' chief law enforcement official called Snoop Dogg a “dope smoking cop hater'' before reprimanding a state trooper who posed for a picture with the rapper, according to emails made public Wednesday. Snoop Dogg posted a photo to Instagram with Department of Public Safety Trooper Billy Spears in March with the comment “Me n my deputy dogg.'' It was taken during the South by Southwest music festival, where Spears was working off-duty as extra security. Spears is now suing DPS after being disciplined for taking a picture with a public figure who has a several convictions for drug possession. Emails obtained by Spears' attorney through open records laws show that the incident went all the way to DPS Director Steve McCraw, who is best known for overseeing the state's expansive border security operations. “Apparently he would rather work the convention while on a week's vacation to earn additional money rather than take an additional tour on the border,'' McCraw wrote. “He must not understand that he was
being lampooned by a dope smoking cop hater which reflects very poorly on the department.'' DPS spokesman Tom Vinger confirmed the authenticity of the email but did not comment on its content. He referred to the agency previously saying that DPS holds employees to high standards of conduct and judgment. The emails include a DPS supervisor explaining that Spears and other troopers have routinely taken pictures with other celebrities at SXSW. He mentions actor Robert Duvall, former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal and musicians Cee Lo Green and Rob Zombie. Spears is seeking unspecified damages in a Travis County court. Canadian track and field athletes will wear "DB" patch in memory of Barnaby “You look at his races, and he was a guy who never gave up,'' said Anthony McCleary, who _ along with Desai Williams _ was coaching the team of about 25 sprinters at the warm-weather camp in St. Kitts. Barnaby, 24, and several teammates went swimming in the ocean after practice. Barnaby was pulled away by a strong undertow. “We sat with all the athletes. . .we had to figure out a way to keep everyone focused,'' McCleary said. “A lot of the athletes said they wanted, when they performed, to keep Daundre in mind. And so every time they gathered together, they would say 'Let's do this. Let's finish like Barnaby.''' A couple of days after his death, the group ran a tribute 4x400-metre relay in St. Kitts. Barnaby's mom Janet and sprinter Kimberly Hyacinthe, who was at the beach with Barnaby the day he died, ran the first leg. His 4x400 teammates ran Legs 2 and 3. The rest of the group ran the anchor leg.
TORONTO _ When Canada's track and field athletes compete this summer, Daundre Barnaby will be with them. The Canadian team will wear a patch on their uniforms in memory of their friend and teammate who drowned on March 27 at a training camp in St. Kitts. “It already does feel like he's running with us,'' said sprinter ShaiAnne Davis. “But it's having something to symbolize that, and to have people question, 'What is that for?' So we can let people know who he was as an athlete and a person.'' The memorial insignia _ a stylized “DB'' _ will be on the left chest of the track team's uniforms for the Pan American Games in July, where
Barnaby would have competed in the 400 metres and 4x400 relay. Athletics Canada is in discussions with the IAAF, the world governing body for the sport, to obtain permission to wear it at the world championships in Beijing. “It's a better way to have him a part of us. He's still on the track with us, still running the race with us, even though he's not here,'' said sprinter Khamica Bingham. “He's always in our heart. It's a constant reminder, you look down and you see Canada. . . and you also remember you're doing it for Daundre.'' On the track, Barnaby was one of Canada's most promising sprinters, a long-legged 400-metre specialist from Brampton, Ont., who was known for his strong finishing kick. The team's motto this season: Finish like Barnaby.
“Afterward the coaches said 'Everything we do, from this moment on, is for him,''' Davis said. “That really sunk in. Everything we do is for D.B. Finish like Barnaby.'' Barnaby grew up in St. Ann, Jamaica, and then competed for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. He became a Canadian citizen in time to compete at the 2012 Olympics, earning his spot by winning the trials _ the footage of which shows Barnaby overtaking several runners down the homestretch, eating up the track on his slender legs. His teammates liked to tease him about those legs. “He was really skinny and his legs were really skinny, so everyone called him 'Sticks,''' Bingham said, laughing. “We would always say that he never got lactic acid (the compound that causes the burning sensation down the stretch of a 400). That's why he could finish so strong, because he had no meat on
his legs.'' Teammates remembered Barnaby as a “jokester.'' “He come to me at practice and say 'Shai-Anne, did you hear the workout? You're not going to survive today.' And then he'd make up a workout off the top of his head, and I would believe it,'' Davis said. “And then the coaches would tell us the real workout, and I'd say 'Oh Barnaby, why do I even listen to you?' He was a great person, and a great presence to have around you.'' Bingham lived near Barnaby and would drive him to and from training at York University. “He was extremely lazy sometimes. And he hated taking the bus, absolutely hated it,'' Bingham said. “Daundre would run fast, when he needed to run fast. He would work hard when he needed to. But he was like a lazy hard worker, he was a stubborn smart athlete.'' Barnaby's career was just getting started, Williams said. He'd produced “phenomenal'' results in practice this season, and likely could have competed through the 2020 Olympics. “He was one of the better kids in terms of personality, in terms of respect, he was genuine, he was a team player, and fun to be around. He was just one of those special kids, it's just a tragic loss,'' Williams said. “I still can't believe that he's gone. Too soon. Way way too soon.'' Nike, the apparel supplier for Athletics Canada, was supportive of the patch, which was designed and created pro bono by Vic Finucci of Finucci Communications. The legs are 1,200 metres, 400, 800 and 1,600. Nigeria took the women's 4x200 in 1:30.52. The American women led by Allyson Felix had a big lead until two of their runners stumbled in a collision.
ALLEN PARK, Mich. _ When Laken Tomlinson was drafted in the first round by the Detroit Lions, it was a big night for a Duke program that's been on the rise of late. It was also a proud moment for Tomlinson's native Jamaica. “My dad is still there. He was really excited about everything that happened,'' Tomlinson said. “I still have extended family there and they were rooting for me. I would say the island is pretty happy right now.'' Tomlinson was introduced Friday at the Lions' practice facility after being selected the night before by Detroit with the 28th pick. Tomlinson moved to the U.S. from Jamaica when he was 11, after growing up in a crowded home on the Caribbean island. “It was a simple life. Back then I didn't have the knowledge I have today but just looking back, we didn't have much at all,'' Tomlinson said. “It was a tough lifestyle. Just having the opportunity to make that switch _ my grandparents moved to the United States before we did and they worked to get their kids, and their kids' kids, to the United States.'' Tomlinson's mother was in attendance at his introductory news conference. He went to Lane Technical High School in Chicago before heading to Duke.
The transition to the U.S. wasn't always easy. For one thing, the weather was a lot different. “Never really wore sweaters in Jamaica,'' he said. “That first night in Chicago was shocking. It was like 30 degrees or something and we were freezing, and no one brought sweaters, so my uncle had to go get some sweaters for us.'' The Lions also introduced offensive lineman Manny Ramirez, whom they acquired in a trade with Denver. Ramirez was drafted by the Lions in 2007 and remained with them before being cut in 2010 and catching on with the Broncos. “When I got released from here it did hurt a lot,'' he said. “But at the same time I truly believe that it was the best thing that's ever happened to me. It put a lot of things in perspective for me.''

Federal judge to hear arguments in defamation lawsuit filed against comedian Bill Cosby
WORCESTER, Mass. _ A judge is scheduled to hear arguments in a defamation lawsuit filed by three women who allege comedian Bill Cosby sexually assaulted them decades ago.
The women say Cosby's representatives publicly branded them liars while defending him. They're among more than a dozen women who in recent years have levelled assault accusations against Cosby, who hasn't been charged with any crime.

‘I feel like a kid’: Singer Brandy Norwood enjoying her Broadway debut in ‘Chicago’ NEW YORK _ Starring on Broadway in “Chicago” has turned into a fountain of youth for Brandy Norwood. “I have more life in me than I’ve ever had in a very long time. I feel 15 again. I feel like a kid,” the Grammy-winner said last week. “We all have a kid in us. My kid is wide awake. Baby Brandy is up and ready to go.” The singer of hits like “I Wanna Be Down” and “The Boy Is Mine” as well as the star of the ’90s sitcom “Moesha” started an 8-week stint in the sexy musical, which marks her professional stage debut.
out of criminals. Others who have played Roxie include Marilu Henner, Lisa Rinna, Bebe Neuwirth, Sandy Duncan and Christie Brinkley. Brandy saw the show when it starred Usher as Billy Flynn, Roxie’s slick lawyer, in 2006. Members of Brandy’s family were in the audience April 28 when she made her debut. One of those most impressed was her 12-year-old daughter, Sy’rai, who was in tears. “She said, ‘Mommy, you were phenomenal!’ It was as if she had never seen me in that way,” Brandy said. Doing Broadway at 36 may be outside Brandy’s comfort zone but that was the hope. She said she realized her life and career in Los Angeles had become stagnant about eight months ago.
The hearing will focus on a request by the women's lawyers to subpoena records from the lawyer of another Cosby accuser.
Brandy plays Roxie Hart, a wannabe vaudevillian star who murders her lover and is arrested. It’s showing off the singer’s sensual, naughty side as she dances and sings in some very short outfits.
Thursday's hearing in U.S. District Court in Worcester is the first in the suit filed in December.
Representatives for Cosby did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The suit applies solely to the defamation allegation and not any assault allegations.
Cosby has a home in Massachusetts.
“I’m going to give it everything I’ve got,” she said. “I may not have the prettiest feet, because I’m pigeon-toed naturally. I may not have the straightest leg. But I’m going to give this everything I have.”
“Change needed to happen for my life. I wasn’t in a very good place,” she said. “I didn’t like it that I hadn’t been dreaming in a very long time. And so I changed my mind. I wanted to dream again. I wanted to live again and be vibrant. I wanted to be me.”
The show, which includes the songs “All That Jazz” and “Cell Block Tango,” is a scathing satire of how show business and the media make celebrities

on Broadway. Palmer said at the time that it was Brandy’s turn as Cinderella in a 1997 TV movie that helped her decide to take the plunge. “She’s inspired me as much as I’ve inspired her,” said Brandy. Her stage experience has left Brandy bubbling with creativity. She’d love to come back and be Roxie again or do something else on Broadway. She’d also love to have a role in the upcoming in “The Wiz” (“Can I audition for Dorothy? Glinda?” she asked, laughing). And another CD will definitely happen. One thing is certain: Being in “Chicago” has reinvigorated the actress and singer. “I will never go back. Never, ever go back. Onward and upward,” she said. “I’m just so thankful.”

BANG ON TREND! FASHION BITES From Jays to jeans: Jose Bautista teams with Silver Jeans on denim line on stitching, on buttons, cuts, fabrics, washes, the logos and where they go.... I didn't know the process was that complicated,'' Bautista said in an interview at the Toronto launch event.
MONTREAL _ Dave Chappelle, Mike Myers and Neil Patrick Harris will be among those attending the 33rd edition of the Just For Laughs comedy festival this summer. The festival begins on July 8 and ends on July 28. Myers will make his Just For Laughs debut on July 24, while Chappelle will give six performances.
“Weird Al'' Yankovic will also appear at the festival, giving a free outdoor show on July 21. Kevin Hart is also scheduled to perform at the Bell Centre on July 24. Just For Laughs bills itself as the largest comedy festival in the world.
Foxx defends his singing at Mayweather Pacquiao bout; anthem was no 'sin against America' arena speakers at Saturday's fight in Las Vegas. Despite that, he got an enthusiastic response from the crowd and individual compliments from Denzel Washington and others, Foxx said.
LOS ANGELES _ Jamie Foxx is defending his national anthem performance at the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight against online criticism. On “Entertainment Tonight'' Tuesday, Foxx says that his earpiece fell off just before he started to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner.'' He said he had to follow the accompanying organ music through
When he learned that online posts were taking him to task, Foxx said he listened to a playback and realized the song was a bit off. But Foxx said he hadn't committed, in his words, “a sin against America'' and said the anthem sounded “great'' in the arena. Posts that questioned if he could sing went too far, Foxx said.
TORONTO _ Jose Bautista has no plans to abandon his day job, but the Toronto Blue Jays all-star slugger is exploring another passion away from the baseball field: fashion. The right-fielder has partnered with Canadian brand Silver Jeans Co. on the Joey Series, which will be released in North America this July. The denim collection's moniker is a reference to Bautista's “Joey Bats'' nickname, which he also uses as his social media handle. The Joey Series jeans will be featured in classic straight and loose fits in a variety of washes. Bautista said he tried to be hands-on for his initial foray into fashion. He embarked on several trips to learn more about production and manufacturing, which proved eye-opening. “There's so many selections
“If you want to let everybody else do the work and you just put your name on it, I'm sure it's easy. But for me, I wanted to make it a really informational learning process for me _ so I asked about everything. “It's difficult to get the wash right, to get the fabric and the feel right.... If you want to make it a little stretchy, just by changing one per cent of the fabric into a more elastic fabric, you can change the feel of the denim completely. So, I enjoyed learning a lot _ and I think there's a lot more for me to learn still.'' Bautista said he values comfort and versatility in jeans. “Being a professional athlete, being on the road a lot and travelling and not wanting to pack a suitcase that weighs 200 pounds, substituting six, seven or eight pants for two pairs of very versatile jeans is definitely ideal.'' Growing up in the Dominican Republic, Bautista admits he dabbled in the baggy T-shirt
and baggy jeans look that was particularly popular in the '90s. However, the loose-fitting styles weren't the most flattering for his lanky frame. “I was always one of the skinny guys, and I wasn't nearly as filled out as I am now,'' said the six-foot Bautista. These days, Bautista keeps his denim choices crisp and classic, favouring basic straight blue jeans, a “super light'' wash and coloured pairs in black and grey. While Bautista's primary focus is on helping to propel the Blue Jays into playoff contention, he's considering other fashion pursuits in the future. “I want to continue to put something out there that's me but that's not just baseball, because I feel like I have a lot more ... I'd like to share with the world about me. This is definitely the first step.'' The Joey Series collection will retail for around $100 and will be available at Jean Machine in Canada and online at http:// www.silverjeans.com. By Lauren La Rose THE CANADIAN PRESS
