The Caribbean Guyana on course for high gold production in 2016

Reverend Al Miller reverses his decision not to appeal his recent $1 Million JAD sentence citizen and the police. Reverend Miller has reaffirmed his respect for the decision of the trial judge and the judicial process of which appeals are of seminal importance and a legitimate right afforded to all citizens. He is now content to await the deliberation and ruling of the Court of Appeal.

Guyana says gold production remains on track to surpass the 555,000 ounces being projected for this year. It said production at this stage is 94 per cent more than it was at this time last year. “In mining we are doing relatively well,” said Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman, noting that gold declarations for the first quarter of the year stood at 161,942 ounces. He is estimating that gold production could reach 600,000 ounces this year. Trotman also revealed that the sector has been making positive developments in reducing instances of gold smuggling. However, he said those developments would be made public later this year. www.jamaicastar.com

Commentary Reverend Miller has reviewed his immediate and initial reaction not to appeal his conviction by the trial judge and has now given instructions for the filing of an appeal against his conviction. This is based on legal advice, the urgings of many and his own prayerful reflections on all that transpired leading up to, at and since his trial. Reverend Miller has instructed that based on all the above he believes it is important for the Court of Appeal to consider and rule on the important legal issues arising from his case; including Jamaica’s relationship with other countries, particularly in the context of extradition matters and as well the relationship between the

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation into reports of the alleged abuse of two detainees at the Central Police Station Lock -Up. The incident occurred on September 22, 2016 at approximately 11:00 AM. The report received by INDECOM on September 23, was that the male detainees were abused while there was an attempt to transport them to court. A team of INDECOM investigators

visited the Central Police Station on September 23, and interviewed the two detainees. Further investigations suggest that one of the detainees was taken to a health clinic in Kingston on September 26, where he was seen by a medical professional. Relevant station records were copied. The Sub-Officer in charge of the Lock-Up was served with a Notice and is scheduled to provide INDECOM with a statement regarding the allegation and be interviewed today (September 29). The other concerned officers were served with Notices to furnish INDECOM with their statements in relation to the allegation. INDECOM continues its investigation to establish if the rights of the detainees were breached.

The World National Dropout Prevention Month

October is National Dropout Prevention Month, a time to focus on increasing awareness of the longterm effects on students, the economy, and society when students drop out of school. National Dropout Prevention Month challenges our nation to become better informed about how to prevent students from dropping out of school. Too often, the need for both dropout prevention awareness and viable solutions is underestimated. While progress in reducing school dropout rates has been made, the need for greater awareness still exists. As recently as 2014, for example, the National Center for Education Statistics noted 6.5% of all U.S. 16- to 24-year-olds were not enrolled in school and had not earned a high school diploma or equivalency credential (www.nces. ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=16). The decision to drop out of school is not due to one single factor. It is the result of a process that often begins years before the actual event. Communities that understand the life-long impact for students who drop out of school and that work together to support at-risk students, however, can help decrease the likelihood that students will drop out of school. Begun early, effective prevention initiatives are the result of community-wide efforts that involve families, businesses, faith-based organizations, and schools. Holness praises Jamaicans for preparing for Hurricane Matthew

Now that the tropical storm warning for Jamaica has been lifted, Prime Minister Andrew Holness is singing praises for disaster preparedness officials and all Jamaicans for their level of preparation and response to the possible impact of Hurricane Matthew. “I am pleased by the level of commitment, preparation and communication by all those involved. I want to thank everyone for answering the call to duty,” Holness said. Holness said government ministries, agencies, private sector, churches and other volunteer groups worked tirelessly to prepare the country for an impending disaster. All shelters were activated as the National Meteorological Service and disaster officials provided the nation with constant updates on the movement of Hurricane Matthew.

Reverend Al Miller Has Nothing to be Ashamed of After being Sentence $1 Million JAD drug-related charges there. Comments attributed to Reverend Dr. Dick on CVM TV in an interview with newly minted journalist Brian Walker are unfortunate to say the least. Reverend Dr. Dick said inter alia that “Miller should step aside as Pastor of Fellowship Tabernacle which he heads as he is a disgrace to the religious community ….”

As the non-traditional religious leaders in our community have overwhelmingly encircled their wagons in support of the embattled Revered Al Miller, at least there had to be a dick to be like a torn in his flesh. He did get a prick from stinging comments made by Reverend Dr. Devon Dick of the Jamaica Baptist Union on National TV, in prime time. As you will recall Vision posted a perspective highlighting that the Reverend Al Miller, head of the Fellowship Tabernacle,

was found guilty of “Perverting the Course of Justice” by Parish Judge Simone Wolfe-Reece … and sentenced on Thursday, September 15, 2016. Miller, in his capacity as Pastor, was transporting suspect Christopher Dudus Coke to the US Embassy to surrender to Uncle Sam. Coke was not wanted by local law enforcement for any crimes. The United States government requested the extradition of Christopher Dudus Coke to face

did. Miller has nothing to be ashamed of. Reverend Al Miller had every reason to want to save Coke’s life. “I was in prison and you did not visit me, I was hungry and you did not feed me”… this biblical quote clearly indicates that there are certain moral if not Christian obligations placed on us to be our brothers and sisters keeper. It is considered most unchristianlike to abandon those in need who need us most. We are disappointing in you Dr. Devon Dick … we say no … you should be more loyal to a religious colleague. Reverend Al Miller Fined One Million Dollars Jamaican...

Will you cast the first stone, Dick? Let me remind you my most holiest of holy Rev. Dr. Devon Dick that Jesus, faced with the choices Miller had, would have done what Reverend Al Miller

The reverend Al Miller was fined one million dollars Jamaican or alternately to serve one month in jail for being found guilty for perverting the course of justices by Parish Judge Simone Wolfe- Reece on Thursday September 15th 2016.

Attorney Jacqueline Samuels Brown pleaded with the Judge not to send Miller to prison. Perspective A large crowd estimated to be about 300 mostly of Miller’s supporters gathered outside the Half-Way-Tree Court House to witness the hearing ...police detachment stood by. There was no,reported violence. Some wept openly. Normally detached but tears almost blinded my eyes as I penned this report. It was extremely difficult to remain composed in the wake of the fine imposed. Grange: time to clear Garvey’s name

The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, has welcomed a petition to the United States President Barack Obama to pardon National Hero, the Right Excellent Marcus Garvey of his wrongful conviction. Garvey was convicted of mail fraud in 1923. However, Minister Grange says the Government of Jamaica is of the view that “the trial and conviction were meant to tarnish Garvey’s image and diminish his global movement.” According to her, “the United States officials disapproved of Garvey’s

fearless advocacy of self reliance, black pride and unity among his people so they imprisoned him, then deported him.” Minister Grange noted that the Government of Jamaica has attempted, at the highest level, and on several occasions to clear Garvey: “A resolution was brought to the US House Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, from as far back as 1987. But sadly, the mission is not yet accomplished.” She believes this petition led by American citizens to their Government will yield the desired result.

Minister Grange said:

Commentary

“It is time to clear Garvey’s name in America. Garvey’s actions were not criminal actions, but they were acts of liberation, with moral justification.”

The Editorial Board of Vision Newspaper Canada supports the petition attached to release from Minister Olivia Grange (Babsy) which calls for the the assistance of the diaspora to sign petition to ask Barak Obama, outgoing US president to pardon Marcus Garvey for mail Fraud so his record can be cleared.

Minister Grange is encouraging everyone who is able — particularly the Jamaican Diaspora in the United States, and Americans living in Jamaica — “to sign the petition and help to right a wrong.” The online petition is at https:// petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/grant-marcus-mosiah-garvey-posthumous-presidential-pardon-his-wrongful-1923-conviction. The petition needs 100,000 signatures by September 28 to get a response from the White House. In the meantime, Minister Grange is bringing a motion to Parliament to expunge Garvey’s local criminal record. He was convicted in Jamaica for sedition and imprisoned at the St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre for three months.

This is long overdue. The CIA had spied n Garvey’s UNIA Black Movement to destroy same by infiltrating and acting with complicity to proffer criminal charges against Marcus Garvey hence his bogus conviction. The diaspora can use its influence in this regard to clear Garvey’s name. The Jamaican government must lead by example … by erasing Garvey’s wrongful criminal record at home also. Full stop! Dr. Peter Phillips Blasts PNP For Leakage To Press

As Turmoil and scandals continue to rock the 78 year old accident prone People’s National Party (PNP) there are new revelations of questionable dealings being unearthed daily. Dr. Phillips launch a broadside on critics of the PNP, especially the media. He appeared very emotional as he addressed Comrades over the weekend of September 9th, 2015. Perspective When you offer yourself for public office or leadership in the society either at the local or national levels, my friend Dr. Phillips, you should expect scrutiny as it is reasonably expected that you should come to the table with clean hands ... as your integrity aught to be above reproach or is unquestionable. Dennis Brooks speaking on “What’s

On My Mind” on FM 90.3 Nationwide News Network (NNN), on September 20, stated inter alia “There is a storm coming ... too many PNP/ Comrades look across the road and say “dirty labourites as if to suggest that they are genetically superior to the JLP ... this is not so ... we are all from the same political culture, it is just the leadership of the parties that make a difference.”

“I Will Put My Foot Down … I Am dangerous” Leader of the Opposition and President of the PNP, Portia Simpson Miller Declared Portia has always projected a bad gal image “Some people trying to cross the line with me … I am putting my foot down, anybody try to cross me … them don’t know where I am coming from … I am dangerous” declared Portia Simpson Miller to thunderous applause from her constituents.

Property Purchase This means property was being bought. The relocation expenses were expected to cover moving of say furniture or to assist with incidentals like repairs to say a rented place or lease of property that is what was reasonably expected. This conduct was not illegal but the claim was viewed as excessive and adjudged to be unethical.

In short Dr. Peter Phillips ... corruption exist at Westminster, on the Hill or The Congress of the USA. It is the modus operandi of the animal callings itself political representation that separates the parties.

There is the old adage often quoted which aptly describes the perception if not the reality as told how the holders of power, a and the extent to which this power tend to transform their behaviour. Should this in reality be classified as: “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely?

What is new?

Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller and President of the People’s National Party (PNP) has come out swinging against those whom she accuses of leaking PNP business to the press. “I am putting my foot down … I am dangerous” so declared Portia, as she addressed her party supporters at her South West St. Andrew Constituency Conference. “It is kind of hypocritical for leaders to ask us to come forward and expose corruption … you laud silence when it suits you” declared Dennis Brooks as he commented on Nationwide today, monitored by VISION SIC.

Portia now 71, has represented this area for forty years. She is believed to be well respected by her people. Portia is being challenged by Dr. Karl Blythe for the presidency of the PNP. Portia once said “Don’t draw mi tongue” Portia is known for this threatening type of language which is uttered with much bravado. We will bring you the latest on the turmoil in the PNP. October 1st - 15th, 2016 Community The Clinton vs. Trump Race … Will It Impact the Caribbean? projections does not appear to be unbeatable any more. She came in to the race with the ghost of Bengazi haunting her, the Clinton Foundation suspicions, the email “egate” mess. Least to mention the first woman to be so ambitious to want to break the glass ceiling to the White House. Even with those apparent negatives she won the Democratic nomination handsomely. (AP Photo/Elise Amendola) (AP Photo/Elise Amendola)

Perspective: Many of us in particular the media saw the presidential race in the USA between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton as a joke when it started with the Primaries. We thought that Trump in particular was a non- starter. He really started badly but at this stage we should not write him off.

described as “rapists and criminals”. Further that Mexico would have to pay for the wall to be constructed. He also broadsided Muslims and threatened to not grant them visas to America, if elected president.

Birthing Fiasco

Trump went to Mexico and said they agreed to pay for the wall … this claim was flatly denied by the Mexican government.

He was haunted by repeating the nonsense that President Obama was not born in America … and by extension was not eligible to have been elected to the highest office in the commonwealth of the United States of America.

We thought he was crazy and many refused to take him seriously. Alas! We were wrong, as he has won the Republican Party’s Nomination. He is now on the ticket to be in the race as a serious contender for the White House.

He boldly said he would build a wall to shut out Mexicans whom he

Hillary Clinton the heir apparent to the White House based on

Hilliary Clinton, 68 is still in my perspective, has the momentum and despite her recent health scare of pneumonia, should get the nod for the White House … This would be a crowning glory for someone who has given outstanding public service as Secretary of State to the US and the world. With issues of credibility and trust haunting her like the White Witch of Rose Hall and Annie Palmer, Hillary has a real problem… certainly not an insurmountable one. If that was not enough she saw her 6 percentage lead evaporate to a statistical dead heat of one percent over her rival Trump. Trump on the other hand has loss valuable potential supporters. He

makes the news daily for the wrong reasons. The birthing mess, the latest gaffe. Trump seem not to know when to be silent …. he just puts his foot in his mouth …. was he ever diagnosed with foot in mouth disease? Last big hurdle will be the debates …Trump has proven to be not so reliable with facts. To be a stranger to the truth will not be an asset for him. Hiliary is an excellent debator and should win the intellectual discourse …Trump will in my view be seen as an Apprentice and will be fire. Former President Bill Clinton will be referred to as the First Husband and will have to be a role model having been a trail blazer creating history as the first to hold that coveted title … he did not know how to keep his zip up when he was the Commander-in-Chief. Will he now be strong enough to not respond to other commands and be faithful to his wife, should she be elected the first female President of the most powerful nation in the world ? We hope he does. Immigration To USA We Caribbean nationals whether in America or in the Islands of the West Indies cannot ignore the events in the USA our strong trading partner nor possible impacts the changes

which may come from a change of residents in the White House. A wall my not be our immediate concern, but other imaginary walls could be erected. Deportations may increase and it could become more difficult to rejoin loved ones in the USA. They often say when America coughs we in the Caribbean get pneumonia. The true race to the White House seem to be narrowing down to credibility, trust, stamina and transparency, and not whom will make America strong again. Let me hope and pray that any new policies will not impact too negatively our peoples in the West Indies and we will continue to enjoy mutually beneficial muulti-lateral relations that will be to our collective good. US ambassador to Jamaica said iteralia … we need not fear that there will be major changes if there is a new president, he was responding to question at a recent forum put on by Caribbean Policy Reaearch Institute (CAPRI). in Jamaica. We have to wait and see. Hopeton O’Connor-Dennie is Senior International Correspondent & photojournalist for Vision Newspaper Canada.

Solange Knowles A Seat at the Table

September 30th saw the release of a surprise album of sorts, The Birth of A Nation: The Inspired By Album. As its title implies, the album isn’t so much a soundtrack to the movie, as it is a compilation album of tracks inspired by the film’s message and subject matter. The Inspired By Album features rappers and even a gospel choir, as well, but R&B artists make their mark on the 16-track LP as well. For many of the R&B singers on the project, it’s a departure from their usual sound, and it pays off nicely.

Solange Knowles has been crafting the 21-track effort “A Seat at the Table” for three years, which follows her acclaimed 2012 EP True. Released via her own Saint Records/ Columbia Records, the project includes talented features from the likes of Kelly Rowland, The-Dream, Lil Wayne, BJ The Chicago Kid, Tweet, Q-Tip, Sampha and more.

Solange revealed A Seat at the Table with a mysterious book sent to 86 lucky fans earlier this week. The book was written by the R&B songstress and features photos as well. Although only a select few got physical copies, the digital version can now be downloaded . Read more at http://www.thisisrnb.com/category/music/ albums/#ICbe1ReFsm9sbzdp.99.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, has commended Chris Gayle on the publication of his biography and urged more Jamaicans to document their history. “Congratulations Chris! I am indeed happy

that you decided to share your story with the world. For a very long time we’ve heard concerns from various quarters that we’re losing much of our heritage because we do not document our stories enough. When this happens, it’s often done by outside sources. We have to document our

history in a way that will be accessible to future generations,” Minister Grange said at the Launch of Chris Gayle’s biography, ‘Six Machine: I Don’t like Cricket… I Love it’ on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at Triple Century. Minister Grange emphasised the importance of

Jamaicans documenting cultural heritage by “telling our own stories; in our own ways; from our own experiences”.

This is a pity. Chris Gayle did not make this mistake and he must be highly commended.

Minister Grange encouraged everyone to get a copy of Gayle’s book. Sport Commentary Chris Gayle’s Biography Too many of us die with our trials, tribulations and successes … due to out failure to document same. We are kings and queens supreme of

Upcoming Clinics Dominica Sept. 23-25 Trinidad and Tobago Sept. 23-25 Kingston, Jamaica: Once again, the young basketballers from the Digicel Jumpstart Clinics lived up to the hype and showed the coaches just how passionate they are about basketball and learning more about the game. The coaches visited Antigua and Barbuda and Jamaica where they selected their xxx and xxx set of boys and girls to move on to the Academy in early October. According to the coaches, the youngsters showed the right attitude and attention to detail – qualities that are key to being successful in the game. Antigua and Barbuda: Senior Manager Basketball Operations Brazil at National Basketball Association, Daniel Soares, said; “The players already have the talent – we just help teach them new ways to use said talent. What I look for, in particular, is the potential to understand the little intricacies of the defenses and offenses and adapt accord-

ingly. I also stress the value of teamwork, respect and sportsmanship which will help them on and off the court.” Jamaica: Senior Coordinator Basketball Operations Mexico at National Basketball Association, Adrian Alvarez Leo, said; “The kids genuinely impressed me with their knowledge of the game and their enthusiasm to learn and develop their skills. When talent meets the right attitude, you have success and albeit I only spent three days with them, I can tell they are headed for success.” The next set of Clinics will be in Dominica at Goodwill hardcourt in St. George and in Trinidad and Tobago at the UWI Spec in St. Augustine. Now in their second year, the Digicel NBA Jumpstart Basketball Clinics train more than 400 of the top male and female talents

British Virgin Islands – Elite Camp Oct. 7-9 Commentary We may not see the immediate return on this investment by Digicel until down the road. The St George’s College student collapsed shortly after the start of his school’s Manning Cup game with Excelsior High at Stadium East this afternoon (Tuesday). Minister Grange said: “Like the rest of the country I am very sad to receive this news. No one expected this. Young Dominic, by all indications, had been doing well. He represented his school well. He was the captain. And had a very bright future. So this is quite a shock. All of Jamaica will mourn with his family and with his school at this time. New TV Drama Series “Shoot The Messenger” to Debut October 10th

A new tv drama series Shoot The Messenger will debut Monday, October 10th, 9:00 P.M. prime time on CBC TV. The show will continue to air every Monday thereafter at the same time. The show's creator, Hungry Eyes Film and Television. It was Executive produced by Sudz Sutherland and co produced by Jennifer Holness. Sudz and Jennifer are a successful and enterprising husband and wife team, who also produced the award winning Feature Film Home Again that won the prestigious PAFF‐ BAFTA Festival Choice Award in Los Angeles and was nominated for Best Direction from the Directors Guild of Canada. There's been multiple series of events

around the time of the show's inception which impacted our media. Over the past year or more there has been mixed matters of personal and political nature which seeped into our prime time TV programs, in the news, shows as well as the front pages of newspapers. Those happenstances which undoubtedly left nothing much to our imagination, presented vivid and dramatic reality show type spectacles of events that over time shockingly grazed viewers eyes locally and transcended local TV norms to impact onlookers the world over. Things eventually settled down and our usually calm sophisticated presentation of events were tidied and seemingly wiped clean as things went back to normal with still many unanswered questions and presumably dead ends.

Shoot the Messenger producers in keeping with the trend of the times and "feeding viewers hungry eyes"-Sudz were prompted through their artistic endeavours and inspiration to give viewers more of what they love about TV, the drama. They created the political crime thriller as somewhat of a continuum to the sedated momentum of dramatic events their audience will nonetheless appreciate. Shoot The Messenger stars Elyse Levesque who plays Daisy Channing a young reporter who becomes entangled in the criminal underworld after bearing witness to an apparent gang related murder. The show also stars Lyriq Bent who has starred in various lead and supporting roles both in film and television since he began his acting career. He plays a police homicide detective in Shoot The Messenger who is personally involved with the young reporter.

the Canadian television series Rookie Blue. Bent has worked with Hungry Eyes producers previously on other films, expresses a great deal of respect for the work of Sudz Sutherland and Jennifer. Their production methodology on Shoot The Messenger really challenged him as an actor. Inspite the challenges he rose to the occasion, time and again to achieve the show's objectives. People grow through change, "never place limits on that which you set out to accomplish" -Lyriq Bent when asked about his dream role, he doesn't have any. It would be limiting "if you place limits you might never know your full capability". -Lyriq Bent The show was filmed in Toronto at different locations throughout the GTA. The humanitarian trait in the character he plays presented a unique and well appreciated opportunity for perspective into the life of an officer "they are people just like us, they put on their pants one leg at a time just like everybody do" -Lyric Bent The show also includes guest appearances by NBA Stars Jamal Magloire, assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors and 3x NBA Champion Rick Fox. maresa@visionnewspaper.ca
