One of the most essential pieces of clothing a skater could own would be shoes. Skating requires a lot of movement on the board, so you’ll need a good quality, heavy bottom, sturdy rubber sole. Soles come in three types; insole, midsole, and outer sole. The inner layers are responsible for riding comfort and added impact protection, where midsoles work more. Additionally, the outer soles will be your first line of defense against rough and gritty surfaces. For the exteriors, always look for quality suede or leather. These are the two materials most preferred by most skaters because of their classic look and durability. Your footwear needs to be as unrestrictive as your clothes. They have to be flexible to your feet movements so your ankles experience little to no sprain. Vans offer great support for skating with a 7mm thick sole, making them perfect for balancing on your board. If Vans aren’t your preference, other popular footwear would be Adidas Bravada and DS Kalis Vulc skate shoes. Skating doesn’t require a particular style. Whatever you like you should wear is the skater’s mentality. This is where your style preference can kick in and not affect your performance. Although, we would recommend a good quality hoodie or jacket. Keep in mind durability is key- skating can get messy and tear your clothing.
Some skaters prefer pants because they provide additional coverage for your shins. Shorts on the other hand go well for bowl or vert skating as you would feel more flexibility. Knee pads are also great to wear for protection while skating.
While most skaters don’t prefer using safety gear, we still advise beginners and small skaters to use helmets, knee/elbow pads, and wrist guards. Here are a few options to consider.

• Triple Eight Dual- Certified Helmet
• Vihir Adult Water Sports Helmet with Ears
• Thousand Bike Helmet
Another essential for most skaters, music. For safety reasons, we suggest wireless earbuds with just one in so you can hear any traffic or commotion around you, but any kind of headphone will suffice. Here are a few options to consider.
• Sony WH- 100XM4 Wireless
• Creative Super X-FI Air
• Beyer Dynamic Amiron Wireless
• DOQAUS Bluetooth Over Ear
• Airpods
