Swimsuits + How to Pack for the Beach
By Keren Ortega
You can even grab a plain one at a craft store and paint it yourself! Mesh market bags make for the perfect beach tote. You can even make one your own using the pattern on page 14.

You’ve chosen the perfect bag, now let’s talk beach tote essentials.
The most important item in your beach bag is sunscreen! Dermatologists recommend a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30. SPF 30 will block 97% of the sun’s UV rays and any SPF higher than 30 will only protect you slightly more. No amount of sunscreen can block 100% of the sun's UV rays. You should wear some sort of SPF on your face every day to keep your skin as healthy as healthy as possible, but it’s very important to reapply when you are out in the sun. Make sure to put sunscreen everywhere, including your scalp, feet, back and ears. If you have sensitive skin, like me, choosing a SPF can be a daunting task. Find one that’s right for your skin type and fragrance free. I’ve attached a list of dermatologist approved sunscreens and where to find them.
Best Summer Sunscreens:
• Elta MD UVB Clear- Broad spectrum SPF 46- You can find this at Walmart for around $20 for 1.7 oz (ideal for sensitive or acne prone skin)
• Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30- $16 at Target (super lightweight and great for any skin tone)
• Supergoop unseen sunscreen- $22 at Sephora (a matte finish for oily skin and wears well under makeup)
• Supergoop glowscreen- $18 at Sephora (a tinted moisturizer that leaves your skin with a dewy glow)
• La Roche-Posay Toleraine Double Repair Moisturizer with SPF- $21 at most drugstores (a moisturizer + SPF duo great for daily use)
Bring a towel so you have something comfortable to lie on, a pair of sunglasses or a beach hat to block the sun, and your favorite hobby item! Take a journal, book, or crochet needle with you so you have something to do. (Especially if you’re tanning). Make sure to also bring a change of clothes and a bag designated for wet clothing. Have fun and safe travels!
