Welcome to our June 2020 catalogue. Almost 12 months ago we took over the custodianship of Goviers, not knowing quite how it would change our lives. Having worked with Alan and the team in Sidmouth I knew quite a bit about the business but we have learnt many things over the past twelve months. What we had not expected was the pandemic, I am not sure that anyone could have foreseen the effects that would have. The past few months have been challenging at times but yet hugely rewarding. Many of our suppliers have been closed or on restricted staffing, our warehouse has not been able to operate at full capacity and the Royal Mail delivery has been slower than usual. Despite all this we have shipped an amazing number of parcels, although I am afraid there are still customers waiting for items that are being made by factories that are not yet open. Thank you for your patience.

This month, despite the current situation, we have a surprisingly large range of new items, and a new silver supplier Comyns. Many companies are developing new items even while the main factories are closed, or only operating on reduced staff. Our friends at Merrythought are now back at work and we are delighted that our first exclusive piece from this wonderful UK company is our limited edition Wordsworth bunny. Sporting his natty Harris Tweed waistcoat he is certainly a handsome and very desirable chap. It is 250 years since William Wordsworth was born and we are delighted that there are so many fitting tributes from our partners to this master wordsmith. On the subject of writing we are really excited to launch our new range of Goviers writing instruments. Master pen maker Michael Bidny has created this range using the finest modern materials, traditional nibs and quality mechanisms. We have all been enjoying getting back to using a proper fountain pen again! I am missing the ink monitor though!

We always like to pick a theme for each catalogue and this time it is the cat, accompanied by the mouse. Our two cats Smudge and Whisky are no longer with us but our son Oliver and his partner Hannah have brother and sister, Chaplin & Pingu. Janet loves nothing better than an excuse to give them some fuss, and a little treat!

The many events planned to mark VE Day were unfortunately not able to take place in May but many people managed to find their own way to celebrate this historic occasion. Our range of commemoratives was very popular and the Royal Scot editions were quickly sold out. August marks the 75th anniversary of the surrender of Japan, VJ Day as it has become known. We felt that it was appropriate to have an accompanying set of glasses for this event but they will sell out very quickly so we advise early ordering.

You may have noticed that this June catalogue has two covers, Pineapples and Christmas. Many of the Christmas ranges from Wedgwood, Belleek and Royal Copenhagen sell out long before most of us have even started to feel festive. The Wedgwood advent calendar book in particular will sell out within weeks. Therefore we wanted to give you the earliest opportunity possible to secure these ranges, we have already been taking orders. The two cover design seemed the best way to focus on Christmas while keeping it separate from the other new ranges. It really is Christmas in July! I hope that you will enjoy the selection that Janet has painstakingly put together for you. The new Comyns range we are really excited about and we hope you will like it as much as we do. Celebrating William Wordsworth’s 250th Anniversary Even 250 years after his birth, William Wordsworth’s perspective on life remains as poignant as ever, as his romantic poetry reflects upon the immutable connection between man and the natural world.

Celebrating William Wordsworth’s 250th Anniversary The Merrythought Story The story began 90 years ago in 1930 when Gordon Holmes, owner of a mohair spinning mill in Yorkshire, saw an opportunity to make soft toys from his special Angora fleece. His desire to make the very finest bears took shape in a beautiful brick foundry building in Ironbridge Shropshire, still the home of the company today. In its 90th anniversary year the company remains family owned and is now run by Gordon’s great great granddaughter Sarah.

In this time of huge upheaval for the country we are delighted to be able to bring you a much needed little cuddle! Our very first Goviers exclusive with family owned Merrythought. Our delightful Wordsworth bunny has been created by the talented team in Ironbridge using the very finest materials. Handmade in mohair, with 100% wool felt paws and a fluffy white mohair bobtail. The stunning waistcoat is made from a traditional herringbone Harris Tweed handwoven in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland from 100% virgin wool.

Wordsworth composed “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” in 1804 while living at Town End in Grasmere.

“I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.” The inspiration for the poem came from a walk Wordsworth took with his sister Dorothy around Glencoyne Bay, in the Lake District in April 1802 which she described in her journal: ”When we were in the woods beyond Gowbarrow park we saw a few daffodils close to the water side, we fancied that the lake had floated the seed ashore and that the little colony had so sprung up. But as we went along there were more and yet more and at last under the boughs of the trees, we saw that there was along belt of them along the shore, about the breadth of a country turnpike road”. Wordsworth resided at Alfoxden, an 18th century Somerset country house between 1797 and 1798, where he composed his Lines Written in Early Spring. They show his firm belief that flowers and plants experienced pleasure.

“Through primrose tufts, in that green bower, The periwinkle trailed its wreathes; And ‘tis my faith that every flower Enjoys the air it breathes.” This Spring time design of golden primroses and cheerful bright blue periwinkle creates an unmissable splash of colour. Designer Rachel Bishop adds extra delight with an early adventuring bee on the Alfoxden clock, seeking out the nectar of these early garden flowers.

Wordsworth came to Dove Cottage, with his sister Dorothy, just before Christmas in 1799. Their new home was a humble cottage with white washed walls and Lakeland slate floors, in a hamlet, Town End, on the end of Grasmere village. Wordsworth described Dove Cottage and the garden surrounding it as ‘ the loveliest spot that man hath ever found’. It was a place that fed his inspiration, as here he wrote some of the world’s most famous poetry. Nicola’s plaque shows the lane outside Dove Cottage overflowing with springtime daffodils and bluebells, while a flight of swallows swoop and soar overhead.

In The Prelude Book 8, Wordsworth was captivated by the beauty of wild foxgloves, with their upward shooting stems and bell-shaped petals.

Bordered by woods and towering crags. Derwent water is hailed as ‘Queen of the Lakes’ and is surrounded by some of the most magnificent scenery in the Lake District. The lake is the third largest of the Cumbrian lakes with four islands - Derwent, Lord’s, Rampsholme and St Herbert’s. Emma’s vase creates the sense of the lake far below you, as seen from the viewpoint of Cats Bells, one of the surrounding fells that shield the lake from the elements. The line work has a stained glass feel to it, making it a most unusual piece, and one Wordsworth would have approved of as mother nature has been left untouched.

Just like Wordsworth, Rachel Bishop has been captivated by the charm of the waterlily mirrored in the still depths of the lakes ‘a faint imperfect

gleam of water-lilies veiled in misty steam’.

This rare waisted shaped vase has a band of waterlilies in full bloom woven around the shoulder of the vase. Their golden centres illuminate the pink and white petals to perfection, while far beneath the waters edge, the waterlily stems roam deeply in the tranquil waters of the lake.

In 1811 Wordsworth wrote a poignant poem about his three year old daughter, Catherine, with a field filled with meadow flowers as his inspiration “Unthought

of, unexpected, as the stir of the soft breeze ruffling the meadow-flowers”

Mardale mountain meadow, is to the east of Wordsworth home in Grasmere, and has an abundance of alpine flowers. As the Lake District’s highest lake, the area is unique and has rare plants such as mossy saxifrage, green spleenwort, juniper, bearberry and oak. All of these are found in this classic floral, meadow inspired vase, together with soft, purple coloured meadow cranesbill.

Wordsworth’s charming poem The Green Linnet of 1802 refers to the Greenfinch, rather than the bird that we now call the Linnet. He composed his poem on the beauty of a May morning, when the orchard at Dove Cottage was bright with butterflies and flowers. An enraptured Wordsworth welcomed the birds, “My last year’s friends”, delightedly following their swift flash from tree to tree, and listened to their songs from the bird he described as “the happiest guest”.

The mountains and forests of Japan have long been the domain of the legendary Tengu, one of the most famous and ubiquitous creatures in Japanese folklore. Vicky’s design features this supernatural creature, in the form of a stylised owl, with immaculate detail.

Anna Lily, introduced in 2001, is a rich and exuberant floral design.

A tessellation of abstract houndstooth checks are wrapped around this vase. Gradually the patterns metamorphose from simple forms into the silhouettes of dogs themselves. Charcoal, black and Celosia orange flood the interlocking shapes to reinvent one of the twentieth century’s most iconic patterns.

NEW Design inspired by the north Rose Window of Notre-Dame, Paris. Construction of the Gothic cathedral took almost 200 years and the north Rose Window allows a divine light to pour into the cathedral in jewel-like tones above. Once opened, the Swiss-made Reuge movement softly plays Franz Peter Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’ Opus 52, No 6’, in commemoration of members of the public singing the hymn, supporting one another, whilst the cathedral stood in flames on 15 April 2019. Miraculously the Rose Window remains intact, evoking a beautiful story of resilience and triumph.

The design was adopted in 1801 and incorporates aspects of three national flags, the red cross of Saint George, the Saltire of Saint Andrew and the cross of Saint Patrick.’

RICHARD COOPER • BUTLER & PEACH All of the work produced by Richard Cooper & Co is made using the ‘lost wax’ method of casting and finished by hand using the traditional method of patination. The bronzes are sealed with a protective wax which preserves and enhances the rich layers of patina applied to the surface. To care for your bronze please use a soft cloth to polish every now and again. Do not use water or abrasive materials as this may damage the wax coating and patina.
