Spring Ramblings...

It is a few weeks since I last sat down to write the introduction to our latest catalogue. I can certainly say that we have not been idle since then. Christmas was very busy for the team as they worked as fast as possible to get your orders out and to you in time. The chaos in the postal system did not help but I hope most things got to you. We have now moved most of our shipping to DPD who seem able to provide a more reliable service in the UK and we will shortly be moving our overseas shipments over to them too.

In January, after a long search, we moved into new premises which give us bigger offices and a much bigger warehouse and packing area. There was a huge amount of work to do to the building to get it into a condition that we could move into, but we now have it looking much better. We are still sorting all the shelving out but having the extra space has been a massive help to us already. You will notice a new address to send your order to, but don’t worry as post to the previous address will still find us.

You will see in this catalogue that Janet has been busy finding the best of the ranges that are being made to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles lll. Some of the product was only just available in time to include and some ranges are shown as artwork as final pieces are still awaited. We think that there are some fabulous pieces for this historic occasion, a tribute to the highly talented designers that work within our industry. Our own ranges, designed by Caroline Dadd, have picked up on interests and significant places for the King and Queen Consort. We have certainly learnt a lot in the process, including the King’s love of red squirrels!

We have worked with Moorcroft to create two very special pieces which we expect to sell out very quickly. No Royal occasion would be complete without something from Royal Crown Derby and once again they have excelled themselves with their design. In the past these ranges have sold out and customers have been disappointed so please order quickly to avoid disappointment.

Our friends at Halcyon Days have been very busy and have an extensive range of pieces in both bone china and enamel. As usual the attention to detail is exemplary. Our jewellery, made in Birmingham by some of the country’s best jewellers, has become very

popular and so we wanted to make use of the special Coronation hallmark and develop some stunning new pieces. The new hallmark can only be used for a limited period, so these pieces are very special indeed.

In addition to our commemorative ranges, we have found some new ranges to add to our At Home selection. Our aim with this collection is to find the very best in each category, and where possible we test these pieces ourselves so that we can vouch for their performance. Both my son Oliver & myself have been fans of the Peugeot range of mills for some time and the new additions on page 41 have got us very excited indeed. The quality of the mechanism on these ranges is far superior to anything else we have tried. Graters are something of a joke amongst my friends, who don’t understand that just one grater is not enough! I have used the Microplane range for many years and I am delighted that we have been able to add these to our catalogue. They are by far in a way the best graters I have, and I have quite a selection! I am now going to have to add one of these new ones to my collection, if only to annoy my friend Mark!

In October one of our son’s closest friends, Ant, died at the age of 26 while exercising from an undiagnosed heart condition. This hit Oliver and his friends very hard, as you can imagine. Knowing the family, we wanted to do something to mark the life of a really lovely and highly talented young man and do something to save at least one family from going through this unimaginable grief. Although not common, death in those under 30 with a heart condition happens more often than you’d think and is, with screening, preventable. We have several things planned for this year to raise money for CRY, Cardiac Risk in the Young. There will be an opportunity to donate when you place an order, and we are working on some items from which all profits will be donated to CRY. There has even been talk of me walking a marathon, in small chunks I hasten to add!

Steiff are pleased to celebrate His Majesty the King, King Charles III with this exquisite piece. This bear contains a musical box that pays the British National Anthem.

Prince Charles Philip Arthur George was born on 14th November 1948 in Buckingham Palace and became King Charles III on the death of his beloved mother, Queen Elizabeth 11, on 8th September 2022. He is therefore the longest ‘heir’ ever in British history.

King Charles is made of grey violet mohair and is fully jointed (head, arms and legs)

He has felt paw pads, a magnificent royal face and shiny black eyes, hand stitched black nose and mouth, together with the famous Steiff "Button In Ear" tag.

King Charles is wearing a robe which is finished with white edging and kept together with little buttons.

At the back of this special bear is a turnable button - just wind up the button and you will hear ' God Save the King'.

Our ingots made in Birmingham’s Historic Jewellery Quarter, include display hallmarks two of which are only available for a short period of time. Firstly, the Coronation Hallmark approved by King Charles III, only available from 1st March, 2023 until 31st December, 2024. Then only available for this calendar year, the date letter ‘y’ is the 2023 year mark. It will not be struck again after 31st December, 2023. A unique collectible to treasure for years to come. Virtually indestructible gold is today achieving price levels rarely seen before. Our silver ingots are made from sterling silver 925/1000 parts pure silver.

The half sovereign was introduced in 1544 by King Henry VIII. In 1817 a new version of the half sovereign was created. Combining the coin striking expertise of the Royal Mint and the master jewellers found in England’s Historic Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. Both Sovereign and pendant have been crafted to the world’s finest standards. Two examples of British crafts combining to create beautiful jewellery.

The half sovereign measures 19.3mm, it has 3.99 grams of 22 carat gold. The 2023 version includes King Charles III, at the time of going to press the Royal Mint have not released an image of the 2023 design though we believe that it will include the St. George and Dragon. King Charles III in line with tradition will be shown facing the opposite direction to Queen Elizabeth II.

All sovereigns are struck by the British Royal Mint based in Llantrisant, South Wales they have been responsible for English coinage since 886AD. Sovereign jewellery offers the opportunity to not only own gold but to enjoy wearing it too.

Using SI quality southern African diamonds, also Brazilian Amethysts, natural gemstones that have taken up to 3 billion years to develop deep within the earth. Each gemstone has been expertly set by a highly experienced gem setter in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Given that the gemstones are natural they are never quite the same, the setter will adapt every setting to perfectly hold the gem.

The Quarter Sovereign was first issued in 2009 and has been issued every year since. Measuring 13.5mm it has 1.99 grams of 22 carat gold. The design will be the same as the half sovereign. Having the option of both half and quarter sizes, there is a sovereign pendant for everyone.

Diamonds and Amethysts have a long association with Royal Jewellery pieces featuring heavily in the Crown Jewels.

Each piece is presented in a wooden display case.

All the pendants feature the King Charles III Coronation Commemorative hallmark. Based on a medal by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS and using artwork supplied by Thomas Fattorini, the mark depicts the King's head against an oval background.

Royal Scot Crystal King Charles III Collection. To commemorate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, a distinguished collection of hand cut crystal engraved with a special Coronation Crest.

Timeless heirlooms to be cherished and passed on through the generations.

This rare Minton bone china orb was made to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

The design is applied using the highly skilled process of acid etching. Once the acid has created the relief this is then hand gilded with 22ct gold and burnished by hand. Roses, thistles and shamrocks encircle the base.

This is an exceptionally rare item and not something we are likely to have again. As was the case at the time this item is not gift boxed.

Cast in a black basalt body, this is a superb example of Royal Doulton's skill and mastery of the ceramic process. This extremely rare piece comes with it's original presentation box.

Around the world the cuckoo has different meanings. In Japan it symbolises longing and unrequited love - two emotions that can come to the fore on Valentine’s Day. In Japanese woodblock prints from the early 1830s right into the twentieth century the cuckoo is often the star of the show. Unlike in the west where cuckoo song heralds the arrival of spring, in Japan it is associated with the onset of summer, when the sun is a blazing hot disk of red, burning down on a landscape famed for its cherry blossom and bamboo.

The 2023 collection of 12 monthly miniatures by designer Nicola Slaney gives a glimpse of life in Britain’s hedgerows.

In Colours of Winter the hedgerow is mostly bare, brown and twiggy. There is some colour though, from both the yellow hazel catkins and the yellow breast of blue tits. The catkins rely on the wind to blow their pollen or from helpful feather friends to aid the pollen on its journey, bringing some much-needed colour to the hedgerow.

The forget-me-not plant has quite an origin behind its name, as according to an ancient legend there was once a mediaeval knight who was walking beside the river one night with his lady love. He was holding a bouquet in his hands to gift to the lady. However, because his armour was too heavy, the knight fell into the river. As he was falling, he threw the flower bouquet and shouted “forget me not!” Vicky's design uses the delicate ‘Lapland’ variety of forget-me-not, the perfect gift for any lady.

Britain’s hedgerows start to wake up in March with clouds of the tiny white stars of blackthorn blossom appearing. This is hedgerow nestbuilding time and the blackthorn blossom screens the birds’ nests and offers vital protection. Blackthorn fruit, dark purple berries, follows its spring blossom in the autumn and helps keep the hedgerow alive throughout the year.

In late winter and early spring, a cluster of Galanthus nivalis 'Magnet' arch one over another, displaying their secret v-shaped green marks on their inner segments, as if choreographed lifting their outer petals like long tulle dresses in the classical ballet, Giselle.

The nodding Galanthus elesii ‘Grumpy’ has relatively broad, grey-green leaves and white tear-shaped petals. The inner petals are marked with two green spots above an inverted V creating a somewhat sad face to appear.

In a soft buttercup-coloured mist, a flurry of snowdrops hang their delicate, pure-white heads above a crowd of crocuses with shells of coral, mustard-yellow, deep purple and bright, cheerful crimson, all bursting into bloom in glorious waves of colour.

Painshill 18th century landscape garden was created between 1738 and 1773, by the Hon. Charles Hamilton. Inspired by landscape paintings and his Grand Tours across Europe, he created a sequence of breathtaking and surprising vistas. On this stunning Moorcroft design, shadows dance across a Serpentine lake and cast their intriguing forms across a ruined gothic abbey, as Cedars of Lebanon soar into an amber dawn and miniscule, brilliant-white snowdrops, bend their heads in silent reverence.

A design overflowing with nodding, purple, and the deepest pink, white-chequered blooms of snakeshead fritillaries that are found on marshes and riverbanks amidst the cries of cuckoos, chaffinch and whitethroat. Here scarlet and deep-purple blooms tinged with rose and violet by light, are mirrored below with a carpet of brilliant-white, humble snowdrops chiming their delicate tepals, long and curved, in Riversong.
