“Our restaurant, our life’’

Our dream was to one day create good service for tourists that would make their holidays here in Cyprus, even more special. This dream came true in 1989, where we established a small family business in Ayia Napa, a restaurant, as I (Theo) am a trained chef and my brother (Peter) is a trained waiter. Since then we have tried our best to provide as much satisfaction as possible to our customers.

There’s a reason why Flames Restaurant is listed as one of Trip Avisor’s top ten restaurants in Ayia Napa. Dedicated to providing an excellent service, its winning mix of friendly staff, a great atmosphere and delicious food has delighted diners since it was established 1989. If traditional Cypriot dishes are what your after, Flames is the place to go. You’ll find House Specialities, Steak, Grills, Fish, Pasta Vegan and Vegetarian Dishes on the Menu. Not to mention its fabulous Wine list and homemade desserts - all chosen to complement your meal perfectly.

The walk will take you about an hour and a half to complete, while the short circular Aphrodite trail (about 3km long) also makes for a great walk, taking you along the magnificent coast. AYII ANARGYRI CHAPEL This gorgeous whitewashed chapel claims pride of place as one of the few buildings in the park. Its location makes it ideal for couples who choose to

When you’ve had a look at the chapel, walk down the steps to the sea and into a cave that used to be a shelter for fishermen and where holy water is said to run. ‘KAMARA TOU KORAKA’ BRIDGE Home to one of the most stunning natural bridges on the island, ‘Kamara tou Koraka’ is a real natural masterpiece, and the area around the bridge is one of the most popular spots in the National Park for picture taking and romantic walks.

HART TO HART

US actor and comedian Kevin Hart coming to terms with a changing world.

T

hey say every comedian needs a solid, varied slab of life experiences to be able in to reference in the name of writing good material; so in the case of Kevin Hart, he’s got plenty to help extend a career on stage that has already netted him the best part of £30million in career earnings. “I know they say money isn’t everything, but it’s sure as hell better than having no money… and I’ve been there,” he laughs. “The way I look at what I’ve earned from comedy, is basically it’s a fee I charge for people to laugh at how crap my life has been. And there’s a part of me that’s been undercharging!” Hart’s ascent to the top of the global comedy scene – segueing into the movie and record industries in the

10

process – has certainly leant on a colourful upbringing. Included in that was his father’s cocaine addiction, visits to prisons where his elder inevitably ended up, the realities of being a single-parent child (raised by his mother, Nancy), and the pressures of dealing with a school life that, while rewarding – he went on to work at the University of Pennsylvania – was unconventional. “It’s perhaps a cliché to say that comedy saw me through those tough times, but I really think it did,” he says. ‘I think human nature sees us make one of a number of responses – that could be to laugh our way out of it, to become aggressive or angry, as has been a route for many successful sportspeople,

BY VIOLET WILDER

or to climb back into our shells. I wasn’t going to do the last one, so it was either comedy or basketball… and at 5ft 4” I wasn’t really in line for that one.” Hart scoffs, but fleeting appearances in celebrity basketball games actually revealed a latent talent that belied his stocky build. In stature, he couldn’t be further away from Dwayne Johnson, who he starred alongside in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle; yet proof that size isn’t everything came in the 40-year-old becoming the first comedian to partner with a major footwear and apparel company on

a cross-trainer. His Nike deal, and the creation of his Hustle Hart shoes, is supposed to point to the idea that everyday people can do incredible things in sport. “I think people are tired of seeing the same old stars doing amazing things with trainers and boots and all that,” says Hart. “When I was asked to launch my range in 2016 I thought I’d be moving away from that into the casual, leisure side of things – I was going to play it cool, man.” “Instead I found myself getting up at 6am going for runs. I found myself lifting weights and drinking a whole lot of protein. Then The Rock started call me for fitness advice…” he laughs. Hart elevated to the position of marathon runner, completing the New York marathon in a smidgeon over four hours. His journey from short funny guy to power-packed athlete was truly complete. “All jokes aside I wish I’d done more exercise when I was young,” he says. “I mean, I was fit; but the difference between being fit and being FIT is the difference between waking up okay and waking up truly happy. Health, just like laughter, is happiness.”

Whether owning it by pounding the pavements, spinning off a latest collection of thoughts and to entertain or abuse, or starring in any number of box office big-hitters, Hart has found peace in unexpected places. True, he has strayed off track in a drink-driving charge, and admits to have struggled with marriages. However, last year, a horrific car accident saw the comedian suffer multiple back fractures. At one point fearing he would never walk again, Hart’s gradual recovery is every bit that of a person, for once, not breaking into hysterical laughter. In a video released showing parts of his recovery, he said: “I honestly believe this was God’s way of saying ‘sit down – you’re moving too fast and you’re doing too much’.” Hart’s intense physical therapy includes weight training and pool workouts. It is a gruelling schedule that should get the star back, physically, to where he was. Mentally though, he will never be the same again. “After the accident, I see things from a whole new

perspective. My appreciation for life is through the roof.” While humility isn’t necessarily a characteristic we’d apply to the Hollywood elite, it’s evidently a taught trait that Hart is regaining. “I had a lot of humility in my youth and I think as time goes on, as you get older, that can get lost along the way. It’s nice to get it back,” he smiles. The setback hasn’t stopped him ploughing on with thoughts of new film Fatherhood. With the release has been put back until January next year in the wake of Hart’s accident, the movie provides a time-sensitive angle for reflection – it is based on Matt Logelin’s Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love, by far the most serious subject matter he has tackled so far. “Time to wise up?” he asks, “maybe a little. Time to stop moving forward? Never!”

THE PERFECT MOMENT PHOTO CONTEST

A

photo taken in Cyprus has been judged as one of the top photos in an international photo competition, The Perfect Moment Photo Contest, in which photographers from more than 50 countries took part. Competition finalist Hasan Baglar received an honourable mention for

his photograph of two praying mantises perched on a branch, their front legs stretched up in the air, and their colourful wings outspread, which the judges called “amusing”. “I think it was afraid of me because it looked nervous and I have heard this is the normal behaviour of a praying mantis when it’s afraid.”

Baglar, born in Limassol in 1974, specialises in nature and wildlife photography, capturing images of birds, butterflies, orchids and insects in Cyprus. He reached the finals of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards with an image of two praying mantises in a similar pose. He titled the picture Zeybeks – a reference to a traditional Turkish dance. 19

NATU R E

CYPRUS - AN INSECT HOTSPOT

D

id you know Cyprus is a pit stop for millions of insects that fly at high altitudes over the sea and come to land to rest as they migrate from the Middle East to western Europe. The study was carried out by research biologist Will Hawkes who studied the swarms of insects on the island for three months during spring. He said, “This place is a migratory hotspot for millions of painted lady butterflies, drone fly hoverflies, sevenspot ladybirds and vagrant

emperor dragonflies – it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before,” One grass fly we found at Cyprus is just 2mm long, so, for their body size, these migrations are quite incredible. Most of the time they’re completely invisible to us,” adds Hawkes, who explains that the distances travelled by insects flying via Cyprus are as yet unknown. “Migration hotspots like this are a window into processes that normally go on unseen, high

above our heads, as huge amounts of insects make seasonal movements,” says Wotton. “This Cyprus hotspot shows how distant ecosystems can nevertheless be connected. It’s part of an emerging global picture of insects on the move.”

“The role of local action groups in this effort is very important, as it ensures that local farms continue to operate and grow in a sustainable way.” “At the same time, the assistance provided by agricultural organisations to farmers will be equally important, as it will give them guidance and support during the transition to an online market, so they can familiarise themselves with a new way of marketing their products.” Any farmers and companies interested in the plan to contact its representative Marios Adamides at 2408328 or via email at madamides@moa.gov.cy, or the representative of the ministry of innovation Marios Giorgoudi at 22205050 or via email at mgiorgoudis@dmrid.gov.cy.

Why I Love Living In

Cyprus

I

t may not be wise to assume that your country of origin is the best there is. However it is moments like those I will explain down below that it is what is. The reasons why I am in love with Cyprus. Firstly the time starting from spring to the end of Autumn. That period is worth living at any particular time. Clear blue skies and bright sunny days are the most characteristics of that era. Warm and long days, warm and calm nights. Plus the low rates of criminality have a feeling of friendliness in the air. Also let us not forget the clear blue seas and the golden soft sands that a sense of freedom inside you. As you wake up in the morning and feel the warmth, making the first cup of coffee looking outside the window and seeing the beautiful blue sky and the bright day can make you smile and look forward of the things

to come. When you walk outside hearing the birds singing making their nest can be described as nature singing you a song to remember the tune in your daily life. If you combine it with the energy and positivity you get from the Vitamin D as the sun rays hit your body will definitely put a smile on your face. It is more obvious if you live in a suburn area that it is very easy to make friends as we are by nature easy to talk to and easy to smile and easily you will find yourself waving alot to people you know as you drive and/or walking by. As the day comes to an end, you prepare your dinner and you sit down in your backyard or your balcony, enjoying either the sun going down since days are long either by night enjoying the cool breeze and looking at the horizon enjoying a pint of beer or a glass of wine. Coming to the weekend as the weather gets warmer

BY Giorgos KOUSOULOS

you pack your stuff into a backpack and drive to the nearest beach. Every beach is just 10 minutes away if you live to the coastal areas. You can spend all your day just relaxing laying in the sand and swimming letting the sun and the sea give you body the healthy benefits they have to offer giving you an euphoria. When the night falls still warm you can sit in a tavern having a pleasant time with your family and/or friends as you enjoy the seemingly endless nights watching the sea in the background. It gives you the illusion that there is no tomorrow, that night will last forever. To summarise, Cyprus may not be the heaven on earth, but it’s close enough. The bright days, the warm long days, the easiness of the people, the safety you feel and moments that can last forever make it a place to fall in love with. 21

BUSINESS Lifestyle chats to Elisabeth Villiger Toufexis, Life Coach, author of “The Soul Kit – first aid for the soul” and founder of the Global Woman Club Cyprus.

WHY DID YOU SET UP GLOBAL WOMAN’S CLUB It’s a wonderful way for women to connect and as the slogan goes: Global Woman empowers women locally and connects them globally. Starting a club in Cyprus was a test, I wasn’t sure how women would react to it, but the result is that every meeting gets better and better, there’s an amazing number of phenomenal women on the island. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE CLUB It’s for entrepreneurs and businesswomen to connect, network and pitch their business. Members of the club get two minutes speaking time at every meeting, and I make sure that everybody speaks to each other. Women find new opportunities and also make friends; there’s a wonderful feeling of support and we look out for each other. WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS SO POPULAR We are creating a safe and nonjudgmental space, women

feel comfortable. It’s a friendly, inspiring and meaningful event of people who want to better themselves and the world. There’s no hidden agenda and we also have a good laugh. HAVE YOU ENCOUNTERED ANY OBSTACLES BEING A WOMAN IN BUSINESS IN CYPRUS Gender equality in Cyprus still has a long way to go. Me personally, I am a doer and I don’t think too much about obstacles. I grew up with my grandparents and had to fend for myself for a very early age which made me tough and determined, obstacles are steppingstones to grow. WHY DO YOU THINK YOU CHANGE PEOPLE’S LIVES I make people understand that they are responsible for their lives, and I make them move from the passengers to the driver’s seat. Not all people have this desire, and

they usually only come to see me once because they don’t want to know about their responsibilities because it’s easier to blame someone but of course, at the same time, they give their power away. I walk my talk and love my live and I show it. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNFULFILLED AMBITIONS I would love to get invited to motivational, inspirational events all over the world and speak from a big stage because then I can combine my two passions, travelling and inspiring people.

LIFESTYLE HOW THE CORONOVIRUS HAS AFFECTED THE PROPERTY MARKET IN CYPRUS...

C

yprus has been an oasis of tranquility during this pandemic. We went into a very strict lockdown from the 15th March until the 4th May with only one outside movement granted (by text message) per day. Case numbers dropped quickly, deaths were very low and they didn’t rise even after lockdown was eased. People observed the rules and consequently Cyprus was judged the 5th safest place in the world to live during April and May.

26

Citizens have had free movement since the 21st May and beaches, restaurants and bars have been open since the beginning of June for the enjoyment of the local population. As an expat living in Cyprus for the last

14 years I was delighted that my family were here, safe and secure. Of course, tourism is a hugely important industry in Cyprus, and tourist flights are not yet permitted but we look forward to seeing our first visitors later in the summer. Our beaches are gloriously empty, and we really appreciate the beauty of our island during these strange times. However, we greatly miss our visitors and cannot wait to see the sea full of families again. Being an estate agent during lockdown it has been a very interesting experience; we have had to adapt to new ways of working. We are used to working very closely with our clients but have adapted our methods

quickly to cover social distancing, video tours, remote signing of contracts and a host of other activities that take place during the sales process. Demand for Cyprus property has been exceptional both locally and internationally. Many clients have told us that the pandemic has given them time to re-evaluate their priorities and to consider their lifestyle choices. Many are bringing forward their plans to relocate, retire or to purchase their holiday home so that they have a safe refuge in case this happens again. If our British owned team can help you find your dream home we would be delighted to welcome you to our beautiful Island.

EMBRACING CHANGE 2020

T

he secret of change is to focus all your energy not on fighting the old but building the new. Socrates Never in our lifetime have we been presented with such an opportunity to re-set and to create a new way of thinking, acting, being and living. This truly is a once in a lifetime moment for all of us. Once in a lifetime moment to decide how we want our future to look, how and where we want to put our energy and focus. I know this change has been imposed on all of us across the globe but if you are fortunate enough to live in a country where you can read this magazine then you live in a country where you have the power to decide how you want things to be moving forward for you and your families Take a moment to ask yourself these 4 critical questions about your current situation. 1. What has been good about this situation personally for

you and your family? 2. What has been okay and you now feel you would want to do more of? 3. What have you not brought into your life but feel now would be a good time to? 4. What do you need to stop doing to allow you to move forward? Change is constant we know but never before has change hit us all at the same time and been so seismic. Life may have changed forever for most of us but the question has got to be, what are YOU going to do about it? We have all said at times that we want to make changes to our lifestyle; well here is the gift of opportunity. Will you eat better, exercise more, see friends and family more often, right that book, take up art, right music, take more time for yourself, help others and dedicate our time to serving others. The lists are endless and right now we have the time to think and focus on our new normals.

I appreciate it has been difficult and everyone of us will have our stories and our tales to tell of our journey and the hardships we have had to endure at times through this journey. My question is for all of us. What are you going to do about it?. We have all witnessed just how short and fragile life can be and so if we are not going to embrace change now then when! If you had total control of how your future life could be and failure wasn’t on the table, what would you attempt? The coming months will truly set us all up for the next chapter of our ever changing lives, how do you want the next chapter to read. You are the writer of your book; why not make it a best seller. To find out methods or to discuss strategies you may want to develop in these areas, email darren@dasala. co.uk or follow me on twitter @dasaladarren.

SASSY SOCIALITE KIA TALI LOOKS BACK OVER THE YEARS AT THE PLACES THAT PUT AYIA NAPA ON THE PARTY MAP Napa Guru Events back in the day

A

s a Napa girl I have been always involved in exciting events. Back in 2009, when I was hosting at Guru Bar, I experienced some fascinating glamorous and high society events there. Guru Bar was THE eccentric venue in Ayia Napa, only for those who could appreciate its own unique spiritual energy and the multi-cultured style. It was a blend of cultures and colours, beautifully mingled together. I hosted for about a season and then I focused on the graphics and PR only. Guru Bar is still my favourite one. To me is a deep sacred connection. Everything there was pure divine energy. The owner Paris, is my mentor and like family. So I was supporting in any way I could. I wanted people to experience Guru Bar same way I did.

It was our first destination when I had friends visiting. Listening to the music that Paris was discovering and dancing, tasting the delicious food and trying different cocktails that Paris has exclusively designed for Guru Bar. And the interior; An old house with a big yard, all white with trees, flowers and colourful accessories brought from Morocco. Inside it was like a temple with comfy sofas and lots Buddha’s making their own strong statement to the guests. Everybody loved Guru! Networking at Guru was another great experience. I have met there some of the most artistic, interesting people with outstanding charisma. Entrepreneurs, artists, press and many more interesting people. One of the coolest parties I attended was The Vintage Event. As the dress code

had to be ‘Vintage’, I remember myself wearing a modern short black dress with lace on top and fringes falling down, and with my red big curls out, big earrings and a whitepearl necklace. Everybody looked beautiful and stylist. The DJ played sexy from back in the days tunes, and the sexy bartenders always dressed in white, made delicious cocktails. My favourite cocktail of all was the Basil Beauty. I can still smell and taste the fresh basil. Everybody danced the night away with happiness and laughter. Cheers to the old good days but I believe the best is yet to come, there’s always something new and exciting in our special place and I will be snapping them to share with you. Your social butterfly,

Kia.

ingle mum of four, Natalie Tooth, from Paralmini, has worked around the clock making and delivering food parcels for the needy. Prior to this she volunteered her time to clean homes for the elderly.

Natalie, 37, who moved to Cyprus five years ago, said of her recognition for Lifestye’s first Hero in the Community feature, “I’m shocked, I didn’t think it was a big thing. I just hate people suffering and wanted to help. I couldn’t settle at night knowing families and especially the elderly were going to bed hungry.” Natalie usually runs her own cleaning business

alongside a charity she set up supporting vulnerable families. During the lockdown she was cooking and delivering 70 meals per day to 40 families who were financially struggling. Even her 9 year old daughter pitched in to help . She said, “We started at 8am and finished at 6pm, it was a full time job but I knew I had to do something. My little girl who’s nine years old also packed up her Christmas

toys and donated them to poorer families too. A lot of work went into it. Over Easter we made gifts and ensured every child didn’t go without.” She also works full time as a waitress at Star Dust to make ends meet but allows makes herself available if anyone needs help. Star Dust have been big donators to Natalie’s charity. Natalie said, “I am the end of a phone day or night if anyone needs help or support. Before I came to Cyprus I was a deputy manager for a nursing home in the UK. It’s my dream job to do the same in Cyprus but I don’t speak Greek.”

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CELEBRITY PSYCHIC People often ask me, ‘How did you know you had psychic abilities?’, but I’ve honestly always known. I have always felt different.

M

y ‘psychic gift’ runs in the family but I don’t necessarily see it as a gift… just like someone can play a guitar or sing, I can simply speak to spirits. I have always listened to them and have never felt scared, it’s come very naturally to me. As I grew up, I would see what was going to happen and make predictions which shocked people. It wasn’t long before I had friends, family and other people asking me questions.

Over the past five years, my work has been recognised by celebrities who approach me through recommendations. For example, I have read for Marnie Simpson, Bobby Norris, Mark Ferris, Lateysha Grace, Sophie Kasaei and Gemma Collins, to name a few. When I met with Gemma, I predicted her perfume launch a week before it had been released. Meanwhile, my other celebrity clients take to social media to express their support and excitement. People often underestimate how insightful psychic readings can be! From romances to career 36

opportunities, I discuss a variety of predictions with celebrities who want to know what they are destined for. I am very blessed to have a wonderful social media following, with almost half a million Facebook fans. They are all incredibly supportive of what I do, which is really encouraging. My weeks are filled with celebrity readings, predictions and reviews, which means they’re always varied. Typically, the start of the week is a time when people want to find out what’s going to happen within their own lives over the next few days. I give free readings on social media and offer guidance to my followers throughout the week, but on Mondays I focus solely on the week ahead. On Tuesdays I clear my energy and switch off mentally. I go for a walk, run or go to the gym, as I find this helps me to release any negativity. Although, I’m generally a very happy, positive person, and as a psychic, it’s important that my mind is clear so that I can tune in to those around me.

with Chris Riley This allows me to give people guidance. I dedicate one day a week to my private clients. I am fortunate enough to work with people from across the world and some have been seeing me for over 10 years. No matter where my clients are from, I love forming strong connections. On Thursdays I spend my time replying to as many followers as I can, whilst Fridays are spent reviewing feedback that I’ve been sent throughout the week. I share this feedback with my team and will call a few clients personally to discuss their readings. Saturday is my day to switch off, spending time with friends and family. On Sundays, I plan for the week ahead, including my weekly tarot readings. I also spend one hour giving free readings to my followers, connecting them with loved ones. After 10 years, I am still blown away by my clients and readings. Experiencing the feeling of pure love that spirits have to pass on is something I feel very lucky to be a part of.

moothies won’t fix a poor diet but they can make a good addition to a healthy diet, and a simple way for people to up their fruit and vegetable intake. Benefits include extra energy, which is why they’re recommended before or after a workout. Tests have proven that the minerals in smoothies help lower inflammation and decrease soreness after exercise. Fruits and vegetables are rich sources of antioxidants which prevent or delay cell damage in skin, and you can pack as many as you want into a smoothie. Berries are particularly good for this. Boost your smoothies with extra nutrient by adding a tablespoon of ground nuts and seeds, plus spices such as cinnamon and ginger which boost your immune system.

Social Media Updates During COVID-19

F

or a huge amount of businesses COVID-19 has caused either a complete or significant loss of trade, particularly in the case of customer facing industries. During this time remaining mindful of your brand and keeping in touch with your customers should be a vital component of your business resilience plan. If competitors aren’t advertising, anything YOU do is more effective. If you can’t swing paid formats, there are ways to stay on top using free resources. Social media, your website and a Google MyBusiness listing are all excellent tools to help customers find you. Consumers are now operating almost exclusively in the online world and without an online presence you become invisible. At a minimum ensure you have customer facing platforms with your current opening hours and services. Facebook and Instagram are notoriously tough on

businesses however there are new FREE features to help you widen your reach including: • Facebook Local Gift Cards: This feature puts participating local businesses in front of local consumers. • Instagram Support Local Business Sticker: Adds your story to your local Support Local Story in front of local consumers. • Instagram Deliveroo/ Ubereats Sticker: Add to your story and consumers are taken directly to your order page. • Instagram Geotags (existing feature): Adds your story to your local area story in front of local consumers. It is important to post regularly on social media. You don’t need to be an expert, simply ensure your post meets 3 objectives:

• Does it encourage interaction (poll, question, tag a friend)? • Is there a call to action (Visit Website, Order Now)? TOP TIPS: Get involved supporting your local community. Add interaction stickers to your Instagram stories. Use relevant hashtags. Do NOT use any COVID-19 related hashtags. Try promoting discounted vouchers or running giveaways for future bookings. Plan ahead. At the very least, avoid unhappy customers with up to date information. At best, use this as an opportunity to stand out from the crowd, grow your brand awareness and widen your audience to come back with a stronger brand than before!

• Is it relevant to your brand? 39
