NEWS Over 50 runners, including Hollyoaks star Jazz Franks are taking part in a route spanning almost 250km to raise money for Good Gym – enjoying a post run beer at the finish line They are aiming to break the world record for GPS running artwork – creating a giant shape across Liverpool and Manchester Race is organised by lower calorie premium beer brand, Michelob Ultra – which has global ties to athletes including Usain Bolt and Serena Williams.

T

he 250km relay race between Liverpool and Manchester to raise money for Good Gym – a charity which combines fitness with good-deeds. Taking place over the week of September 18th and 19th, around 50 runners from across the North West will each complete stages of either 5km or 10km – rewarding their efforts with a refreshing bottle of Michelob Ultra at the finish line. Together they’ll produce a large-scale GPS drawing as they progress between the two cities, which will be the biggest of its type ever created by runners. The route was designed by Manchester based GPS artist, Nathan Rae, who has previously undertaken huge drawings throughout the city including animals, hearts and an iconic tribute to those that lost their lives in the Manchester Arena Bombing.

8

Matt Koep, product owner at Michelob Ultra UK said: “Running is more popular than ever, the ultimate release from our busy lives. Not only will this race break a record and raise money, it’ll bring together a community of runners from around the North West to champion their passion. “At Michelob, we firmly believe it’s only worth it if you enjoy it. Sacrifice

doesn’t have to come at all costs and whether it’s a 5k, 10k or half marathon, this event is designed for joggers of all abilities to complete at their own pace and enjoy a crisp and refreshing 3.5%, 73 calorie beer at the end. “Good Gym is such an incredible cause, doing amazing work throughout Manchester and Liverpool so it’s a real privilege to bring attention to such a valuable organization and set up a fundraiser run for the cause. “You can keep up-todate with the Michelob Marathon including Jazz Frank and a few other surprise celebrities training routines, the runners’ preparations as well as the progress of the event itself by following @michelobultrauk on Instagram.

ACTOR

LIFESTYLE MEETS ACTOR AND WRITER, DANIEL P LEWIS HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FILM INDUSTRY? Since a young age I always wanted to be an actor but I was too ashamed to admit it. Growing up in the area I grew up in and the group of friends I had I worried about what people would think. From the age of seven I boxed and dedicated years to the sport and was actually pursuing a career in boxing. However October 2014 I had an accident just weeks before my professional debut and seriously injured my back. I was actually in a wheelchair for a short while, using crutches and having rehabilitation for months. I spent the next fourteen months not knowing what to do, gaining weight and becoming severely depressed until one day I burst into tears and my fiance asking "what do you want?" and I instinctively yet nervously answered "I want to be an actor!" January 2016 and that old "New Year new me" mentality kicked in and I started that journey...

12 12

HOW HAS YOU ENVIRONMENT INFLUENCED YOUR SCRIPTS? I had been acting for five months and was thinking "why aren't I in Peaky Blinders yet?" It's fair to say this acting game isn't as easy as that. So I thought well if no one is going to give me the opportunity I'll create my own. I've not got a GCSE to my name, was kicked out of school at the age of fourteen and used to struggle with my reading and writing. However I started to write my own script. I reached out to student filmmakers and produced my own short. All of a sudden I can now get an agent because I've got a showreel piece. However this "showreel piece", this five minute short film was viewed by hundreds of thousands all around the world. I was nominated for eleven 'Best Actor' awards in five countries and I won five 'Best Actor' awards in three countries. I received an email from BAFTA who applauded and congratulated me on my performance and I was encouraged to use that as a pilot to help fund a feature length version.

So within five months of chasing this lifelong dream I'm now a multi awardwinning actor but also a writer. I would never in a million years think I would be a writer but it is one of my biggest passions. I love being creative and putting my thoughts on paper. It's actually really therapeutic and relaxing for me. I've been quite open with my story and my past in recent documentaries, podcasts and social media. I had a tough time growing up and went through some nasty experiences and dark times. But just like Ying and Yang there has been good times, surrounded by personalities and funny stories. Working on the doors of night clubs and security since I was eighteen. In and around the boxing lads. I've met some characters and those experiences, stories and people have all influenced the scripts I write.

WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON? I have just finished my own feature called 'BILLY SMITH' a dark thriller set in the 90s, Arkansas, USA. DHM.films in association with PRODUCTION HAUS have worked on this really unique and fun project. I wrote, produced and star as Billy Smith who is so far from the real me. Co-produced by my good friend Keith Hyland and amazingly directored by the talent Joshua Blewitt. It will be hitting all your screens very soon. In the new year I will be finally going into production of 'THOMAS' the feature length version of the award-winning short I done back in 2016. This one is special and I am so blessed to have secured some BIG names in this project. I can not wait to get started. WHO HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE? I take inspiration from a lot of people. Of course the heavyweights like Martin Scorsese and QuentinTarantino. Someone like Charlie Chaplin who is someone I admire hugely. He wrote, produced, directed, starred in and even built the sets. However on a more personal level my uncle Tucker. Whatever it may be, boxing, acting or life in general he's always given me that fighting spirit. That

never give up and show no fear attitude. TELL US ABOUT YOUR MOST SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS? There are a number of things I'm proud of that I consider achiements. Of course the acting awards. I am a boxing world record holder. One of four directors of a growing media company in DHM.media. I am an advocate for mental health awareness and often talk on behalf of charities and organisations about my experiences in the hope to help others. However my proudest and biggest achievement is finding out that soon I'll be a dad. YOU'RE ABOUT TO BECOME A DAD. HAS THAT CHANGED YOUR ANYTHING? Absolutely! It's changed everything (for the better of course). It's given me a whole new purpose in life and even more motivation to succeed in what I do. Nothing in this world is more important than this little boy and everything I do now is for him. I can't wait to meet him, hug him and love him. He will have everything I never had. HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING NOMINATED FOR A LIFESTYLE AWARD? I heard the news that I was nominated for a 'Liverpool Lifestyle Award 2021' and now I'm a finalist in the

'Best Innovative Business / Person' category. I was really happy after I Googled what innovative meant... I'm just someone with a dream and I'm doing anything and everything to make that dream a reality. I'm someone doesn't take "no" for an answer. I hate being told what to do and when I hear "you HAVE to do it this way" only makes me want to do it differently. I'm very stubborn and a little arrogant (but in a healthy way and not a ugly egotistical way). I know I've do things very unconventional but I've surrounded myself with other "innovative" and like-minded people and now things are slowly but surely happening. It would be pretty cool to win an award of course but to be nominated is a blessing also. It shows I've been noticed and respected for the hard work over the last couple of years. Things like this is much more to me because I've come from such a dark and horrible place. So it represents more than "just an award" it proves ANYONE can come from deepest and darkest places and achieve things. So a huge thank you to Amanda and everyone involved / voted at the 'Liverpool Lifestyle Awards' as this means a lot.

veggies, yoghurts, apples, smoothies, cream cakes, and tomatoes.

How your fridge temperature One of the main reasons why we waste food is can help save the planet because we don’t use it in For food’s sake – stay cool!

T

he ultimate heartbreak: going to put milk in your tea and finding it’s gone off. For a nation of tea (and coffee!) lovers, there’s nothing worse than having your brew ruined by sour milk. And it might shock you to hear that, in our homes, we waste the equivalent of 3.1 million glasses of milk every single day! The main reason? We simply don’t use it in time. Luckily, there is a quick and easy thing we can all do to keep our milk fresher for a little longer, as well as all our other chilled foods. All you need to do is chill the fridge out! Food survives at under 5. When was the last time

18

you checked your fridge temperature? It’s not number one on most people’s to-do lists, but it can prevent food from being wasted – saving you money as well! Less than half of UK adults know the best temperature to keep the fridge at, so at Love Food Hate Waste we’re on a mission to help you all keep your cool. Millions of UK fridges are set too warm for all of our fresh foods. Dialling down to below 5⁰C means your food stays safe and fresher for longer, giving you more time to enjoy your milk,

time. Making this small but simple change can extend the life of your food by stopping it spoiling too quickly! Many of us also keep some foods at room temperature, when they will actually last longer in the fridge. Apples and tomatoes are key examples – these both last longer when they are nice and chilled! Just remember to bring your tomatoes out a few minutes before eating to enjoy them at their best. Our food storage A–Z has plenty of information on where’s best for all your different foods.

Not sure how to check or adjust your fridge thermometer? You’re in luck – we can help! Our handy Chill The Fridge Out tool can show you how to master your fridge temperature in seconds. Good for your pocket and the planet. Checking and changing your fridge temperature to below 5°C – and storing everything in the fridge that should be in there – could stop up to 70,000 tonnes of food from ending up in the bin every year. But it’s not just the food you’ll be saving. Those 70,000 tonnes of food are worth £160 million, meaning every household has money to save by chilling the fridge out! On top of that, saving all this food from the bin would stop roughly 270,000 tonnes of C02e being emitted every year. So, by keeping an eye on your fridge temperature, you’re really taking action against climate change. Globally, wasting food creates six times more greenhouse gas emissions than aviation, so wasting less by keeping your fridge cool is a big positive act for the planet. But, does running your fridge at a lower temperature have an impact on energy use,

which could be just as bad for the planet? According to our research, it’s actually still a good move, so long as all your fruits and veggies are stored correctly. The reduction in food waste and emissions from chilling your fridge out – and perfecting your food storage game! – more than offsets any increase in energy and emissions. Saving money and doing your bit for the planet – win-win! Relevant stats: • UK homes waste the equivalent of 3.1 million glasses of milk every day. • 290,000 tonnes of milk are wasted in homes every year – mostly because it’s not used in time. • Millions of UK fridges are at least 2C too warm, milk will last three days longer if kept at 4C.

food waste.) • Only 48% of UK adults know that apples will last longer in the fridge than at room temperature, and only 45% know that their fridge should be kept to under 5C. Snippet: Keeping your fridge at under 5C: • Prevents food going in the bin – food stays safe and fresher for longer! • Saves money by helping you waste less food. • Is an easy thing we can all do to prevent climate change. Not sure how? Love Food Hate Waste can help you check and change your fridge temperature.

• Lowering your fridge temperature to 4C is estimated to save 70,000 tonnes of food from being wasted – this is worth £160m, and generates roughly 270,000 tonnes of C02 emissions annually. •

4.5 million tonnes of edible food is wasted every year in UK homes. (We generate 6.6 million tonnes of

PROPERTY Rob Johnson owner of RJ Overseas Property Tell us about your background? Having

been in the residential & real estate industry for over 35 years we have a wealth of experience which led to us establishing our family business 12 years ago in the UK. We have provided professional consultancy services on all aspects of the housebuilding sector, including Project Management, Construction, Purchasing and Investment. Following us purchasing our own “Forever Home” in Cyprus over 10 years ago, we began offering clients and investors a high level of service in purchasing overseas, this ultimately led to us establishing a Cyprus office several years ago, and we are now only one of a few Licensed Real Estate Agents who can provide clients with a comprehensive service in both the UK & Cyprus, which sets us apart from others.

Tell us about the personal service you guarantee? Our

16 20

20

approach has always been personal and professional to the individual client, this is also reflected throughout the RJ team, most of whom have been with us for several years and understand the importance of trust, professionalism, and honesty. We do on many occasions meet with clients in the UK before they even arrive in Cyprus, again

from a personal aspect this allows both us and the client to establish an early relationship which can only assist as we go through the process. Many clients will have a million and one questions not necessarily property related, again through our well-established associates and partners we are able to respond and give people piece of mind to any information they require. As owners of the company, we always make ourselves readily available to each and every client.

Has Brexit changed the property market for you? Since the UKs

withdrawal from the EU on 31st December 2020, we have been in fluxed with many questions from UK based clients covering aspects such as Immigration, Mortgages, Taxation, Pensions as well as questions regarding purchasing property and what if any impact Brexit will have on their wish to buy that holiday home, investment, or relocation/ retirement. I have visited many clients in the UK to discuss their personal requirements on a “one to one “personal basis to give them piece of mind and that the dream of owning a home in the sun can still be achieved with the right and unbiased professional advice. As we have received so many various questions, we have complied a

“What happens after Brexit “information pack which clients have found useful and provides an indication on the above issues. A copy can be requested by emailing: rob@rjoverseasproperty.com

As we go into autumn do you see any sign of sales slowing down? We

had an increase in enquiries during 2020, but the last quarter saw many UK clients delaying the decision to either purchase or view properties leading up to Brexit. This coupled with the pandemic and the impact on flights and travel saw the market slow which impacted on the Real Estate sector globally. Since the start of 2021 we have seen an increase in enquiries, and we have assisted clients with arranged video viewings and online meetings to answer their questions. From February onwards and throughout the summer months we have seen a 60/70% increase in enquiries and with the ease on travel restrictions many clients are now confirming pre-arranged viewing trips with us, through to the end of 2021 which is highly encouraging. Taking in to account the current climate and the impact over the last 18 months we see the market demand continuing to rise through in to 2022. To cater for client demand we have restructured our team to increase our personal approach, professionally led by our Senior Sales Manager Sue Hough based at our Protaras offices.

have to admit to a certain addiction to self-help books, except I rarely get more than half way through before I say “ok, I get your message but you could have said it in half the time”. The goal of the author is to get me to read the book from cover-to-cover but that feels like is a real commitment to me, maybe something I’ll do on my holidays. It’s pretty straightforward really ... but for some reason I wasn’t committed enough to completing the simple task of reading a book through to the last page. It turns out that my goal and the author’s goal are different. I tend to highlight relevant points Eventually I worked out that my goal was to get the message from the book

not just to get to the end of it, I had been confusing a task with a goal. We all have tasks at work and in our social lives that we have to commit to but there are some tasks that we just don’t have to do, we do it more out of habit. I have set myself a goal to have 2 hours per week to ride around my home town on my scooter. This isn’t new year’s resolution stuff, this is a plain and simple question that I asked myself “I love riding around on my scooter ... and the more aimless the journey the happier I am ... so how do I get more time to do it?”. Two things had to happen for this to work ... firstly I had create the time .... Secondly I had to make sure I do it, not just sit down and think about it or just talk about it.

@dasaladarren

If you see me on the East Lancashire Road (or Route 66 as I like to call it) I’ll be the one grinning from earto-ear ... mostly because I’m enjoying the ride but also because I have set myself a goal and achieved it ... I know it’s only a tiny achievement but I’m the one with a smile on my face. Maybe life isn’t about the pursuit of happiness ... maybe we have it the wrong way around ... maybe life is about the happiness of pursuit. In such challenging times I feel is critical to find what makes you happy and create the time to enjoy that happiness. No guilt, no justification, just happiness. Pursue what makes you feel happy. ENTERTAINMENT

Lifestyle columnist and Liverpool Live Radio presenter CLAUDINE HOPE H e l l o! After a full packed summer break, the children are back to school and finally there is a routine in place. Whoo hooo! Recently on Liverpool Live Radio I had the pleasure of interviewing TV actress and national treasure, Su Pollard. I have to admit I felt a little starstruck as I was a huge fan of the 1980’s BBC series Hi-De-Hi which Su starred in as the ditzy chalet girl Peggy Ollerenshaw. If you haven’t seen Hi-Di-Hi you may have seen Su Pollard in one of the many stage plays, musicals, pantomimes or most recently in Celebrity MasterChef 2021 where Su made the Semifinals along with contestant Happy Mondays star Bez. Su told me about her exciting new one-woman hit play called “Harpy ‘’ written by award

winning playwright Philip Meeks. The tour kicks off in Portsmouth on 28th September 2021 then moves around the country. To see Su Pollard play the outstanding role in “Harpy”, visit Su’s website www.supollard.com or check it out on ents24. com. I wish Su loads of luck in the finals of celebrity Masterchef and as we say in showbiz, “Break a leg” on tour. Not literally! A few weeks ago, I helped organise a 50th Golden Wedding anniversary for my partner’s parents. It was an amazing day and I had the pleasure of meeting a lovely lady called Christine who made the most adorable golden balloon arch for me. It set the scene for a perfect day and I wanted to thank Christine who is from Liverpool for helping to make the day special. Her company is Tillys Treats Balloons. Check her out on Instagram and Facebook. Look out for me in next month’s Lifestyle Magazine

where I’ll have more juicy celeb gossip. Catch me on the Liverpool Live, Thursdays at 11am on Roy Basnett’s Mid Morning show and Sundays on The Boss Birds show from 5-6pm www. liverpoolliveradio.com Check me out on Instagram: claudine_hope_ Until Next Month babes!

Seafood curry with steamed greens BY PAUL WATTERS • 4 potatoes • 2 onions • 1 clove of garlic(crushed) • 1 red pepper • 1/2 bunch of coriander • 1 teaspoon of dried ginger • 1 teaspoon of dried coriander • 1 teaspoon of chilli powder • 1 teaspoon of turmeric • 2 tablespoons of curry powder. • 1 pint of chicken stock • 1 can of coconut milk Method First off all you need to get the potatoes ready, wash and peel and roughly dice par boil for 5 minutes and drain and rinse under cold water. While the potatoes are cooking get on with the curry sauce peel and dice or slice the onion and red pepper with the garlic Cook for a few minutes adding in spices turn down heat to slightly above simmer allow to cook for a few minutes to allow spices cook out add in chicken stock, bring to the boil add

allow to reduce for 5 minutes add in coconut milk bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes add potatoes and allow to rest for a few minutes. Seafood mix Most supermarket’s have a seafood counter so ask the fishmonger to prepare a llb of mixed seafood and tell them what you want to have in it. To cook the seafood bring your curry sauce gently to the boil season with salt and pepper and for a additional taste I use a little bit of sweet chilli sauce but that my preference. While the

sauce is coming to the boil bring a small pot of a little water to the boil with a little salt add in desired greens and cook for 3 4 minutes. Whilst cooking add your seafood to the curry sauce and gently cook for a few minutes add a little chopped coriander check season again and serve in a bowl with picked coriander as a garnish. Drain off the veg and drizzle a little sesame oil if you want and black pepper this can also be served with rice. Enjoy!
